The tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus is one of the main ectoparasites that affects dogs, causing direct and indirect damage to parasitized animals. Currently, infestation control is mainly carried out by using synthetic acaricidal drugs. However, a decrease in efficacy and an increase in resistance to the main therapeutic protocols against tick infestations have been increasingly reported and confirmed, a factor that has driven research into the potential acaricide activity of natural compounds, including in association with synthetic molecules. The aim of this work was to evaluate whether the combinations of fipronil (FIP) and eugenol (EUG), FIP and carvacrol (CAR), and EUG and CAR would have synergistic effects against immature and unfed adult stages of R. sanguineus through in vitro bioassays. Bioassays were carried out using the larval packet test (FAO 2004) adapted for nymphs and adults. The synergistic activity was explored by combining each solution, based on the estimated LC50, in a 1:1 ratio (FIP: EUG, FIP: CAR and EUG: CAR). CompuSyn software was used to evaluate the various pairwise combinations of FIP, EUG and CAR, checking if there was synergism or antagonism between them. FIP and EUG and FIP and CAR showed combination index (CIn) values above 1.45, indicating antagonism. The synergistic activity between EUG and CAR was verified against all unfed phases of R. sanguineus, since the CIn was below 0.70, a value that indicates synergism. The combination of fipronil with either eugenol or carvacrol presented antagonistic effects against R. sanguineus larvae. On the other hand, carvacrol and eugenol had excellent pharmacological synergism against all tick stages with mortality values in the range of 80 to 100%, including the adult stage, which is less susceptible than immature stages.

Ion channels are potentially exploitable as pharmacological targets to treat asthma. This study evaluated the role of KCa3.1 channels, encoded by Kcnn4, in regulating the gene expression of mouse airway epithelium and the development of asthma traits. We used the ovalbumin (OVA) challenge as an asthma model in wild-type and Kcnn4-/- mice, performed histological analysis, and measured serum IgE to evaluate asthma traits. We analyzed gene expression of isolated epithelial cells of trachea or bronchi using mRNA sequencing and gene ontology and performed Ussing chamber experiments in mouse trachea to evaluate anion secretion. Gene expression of epithelial cells from mouse airways differed between trachea and bronchi, indicating regional differences in the inflammatory and transepithelial transport properties of proximal and distal airways. We found that Kcnn4 silencing reduced mast cell numbers, mucus, and collagen in the airways, and reduced the amount of epithelial anion secretion in the OVA-challenged animals. In addition, gene expression was differentially modified in the trachea and bronchi, with Kcnn4 genetic silencing significantly altering the expression of genes involved in the TNF pathway, supporting the potential of KCa3.1 as a therapeutic target for asthma.

Fipronil (FIP) is an ectoparasiticide of the phenylpyrazole class, used in veterinary medicine in topical form. Supported by evidence of uncontrolled human exposure to FIP and environmental damage caused by commercially available formulations, its use by oral administration has become promising. The effectiveness of FIP against the flea Ctenocephalides felis felis and the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus and its pharmacokinetics and main active metabolite, fipronil sulfone (SULF) were evaluated after single oral administration of tablets in three different doses (2, 4, and 6 mg/kg) in dogs. Through the plasma concentration curves, it was possible to observe that the FIP showed rapid absorption and metabolization and slow elimination. The values of Cmax (ß = 0.7653) and AUC0- t (ß = 0.3209) did not increase proportionally with increasing dose. At 48 h after treatment, doses of 4 mg/kg (AUC0- t  = 442.39 ± 137.35 µg/ml*h) and 6 mg/kg (AUC0- t  = 421.32 ± 102.84 µg/ml*h) provided 100% and 99% efficacy against fleas, and 95% and 98% against ticks, respectively. The estimated EC90 of FIP +SULF was 1.30 µg/ml against C. felis felis and 2.16 µg/ml against R. sanguineus. The correlation between the FIP pharmacokinetic and efficacy data demonstrated its potential for oral administration in the form of tablets for the control of ectoparasites in dogs, as a safer alternative for animals, humans, and the environment, aligned with the One Health concept.

The search for new antibacterial agents that could decrease bacterial resistance is a subject in continuous development. Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria possess a group of metalloproteins belonging to the MEROPS peptidase (M4) family, which is the main virulence factor of these bacteria. In this work, we used the previous results of a computational biochemistry protocol of a series of ligands designed in silico using thermolysin as a model for the search of antihypertensive agents. Here, thermolysin from Bacillus thermoproteolyticus, a metalloprotein of the M4 family, was used to determine the most promising candidate as an antibacterial agent. Our results from docking, molecular dynamics simulation, molecular mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann (MM-PBSA) method, ligand efficiency, and ADME-Tox properties (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion, and Toxicity) indicate that the designed ligands were adequately oriented in the thermolysin active site. The Lig783, Lig2177, and Lig3444 compounds showed the best dynamic behavior; however, from the ADME-Tox calculated properties, Lig783 was selected as the unique antibacterial agent candidate amongst the designed ligands.

The Amazon region holds most of the biological richness of Brazil. Despite their ecological and biotechnological importance, studies related to microorganisms from this region are limited. Metagenomics leads to exciting discoveries, mainly regarding non-cultivable microorganisms. Herein, we report the discovery of a novel ß-glucosidase (glycoside hydrolase family 1) gene from a metagenome from Lake Poraquê in the Amazon region. The gene encodes a protein of 52.9 kDa, named AmBgl-LP, which was recombinantly expressed in Escherichia coli and biochemically and structurally characterized. Although AmBgl-LP hydrolyzed the synthetic substrate p-nitrophenyl-ß-d-glucopyranoside (pNPßG) and the natural substrate cellobiose, it showed higher specificity for pNPßG (kcat/Km = 6 s-1·mM-1) than cellobiose (kcat/Km = 0.6 s-1·mM-1). AmBgl-LP showed maximum activity at 40 °C and pH 6.0 when pNPßG was used as the substrate. Glucose is a competitive inhibitor of AmBgl-LP, presenting a Ki of 14 mM. X-ray crystallography and Small Angle X-ray Scattering were used to determine the AmBgl-LP three-dimensional structure and its oligomeric state. Interestingly, despite sharing similar active site architecture with other structurally characterized GH1 family members which are monomeric, AmBgl-LP forms stable dimers in solution. The identification of new GH1 members by metagenomics might extend our understanding of the molecular mechanisms and diversity of these enzymes, besides enabling us to survey their industrial applications.

Background: Direct observation of hand hygiene is the standard practice recommended by the World Health Organization to monitor its compliance. Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of hand hygiene observation performed by units' observers. Methods: A descriptive study was carried out in seven patient care units in a 75-bed community hospital in Qatar. Four trained nurses performed hand hygiene observation in May 2016, any day of the week and in different shifts, following the same methodology as routine units' observers. Hand hygiene opportunities were registered, including hand hygiene moments, staff category, and actions (handrubs, hand washing, missed hand hygiene, and gloves without hand hygiene). Results: During January-May 2016, routine monitoring reported 25,319 opportunities with a compliance of 89.2%, and 91.6% for nurses, 89.6% for physicians, and 85.1% for ancillary staff. Trained external observers reported 815 opportunities and compliance of 54.7%, with the highest compliance observed after blood and body fluid exposure (80.0%) and after patient contact (85.5%), and the lowest figures before patient contact (34.2%) and before aseptic procedure (34.0%). Conclusion: This study provides essential information about the accuracy of the monitoring procedure and the compliance of hand hygiene that requires immediate action to protect patients and staff from healthcare-associated infections.

Objective: Identify the predictors associated with delayed union at 6 months and non-union at 12 months in tibial shaft fractures treated with intramedullary nailing (IMN). Methods: This retrospective longitudinal study included a cohort of 218 patients who sustained tibial shaft fractures and received IMN between January 2015 and March 2022. We gathered data on a range of risk factors, including patient demographics, trauma intensity, associated injuries, fracture characteristics, soft tissue injuries, comorbidities, addictions, and treatment-specific factors. We employed logistic bivariate regression analysis to explore the factors predictive of delayed union and non-union. Results: At the 6-month follow-up, the incidence of delayed union was 28.9%. Predictors for delayed union included flap coverage, high-energy trauma, open fractures, the use of external fixation as a staged treatment, the percentage of cortical contact in simple type fractures, RUST score, and postoperative infection. After 12 months, the non-union rate was 15.6%. Conclusion: the main predictors for non-union after IMN of tibial shaft fractures are related to the trauma energy. Furthermore, the initial treatment involving external fixation and postoperative infection also correlated with non-union. Level of Evidence III; Retrospective Longitudinal Study.


Objetivo: identificar os fatores preditivos associados ao atraso de consolidação em 6 meses e à não união em 12 meses em fraturas da diáfise da tíbia tratadas com haste intramedular (HIM). Métodos: O estudo longitudinal retrospectivo de coorte incluiu 218 pacientes, que apresentaram fraturas da díafise da tíbia e receberam HIM entre janeiro de 2015 e março de 2022. Os desfechos principais pesquisados foram atraso de consolidação em 6 meses de acompanhamento, e não união em 12 meses. Coletou-se dados de uma variedade de fatores de risco. Utilizou-se análise de regressão logística bivariada para explorar os fatores preditivos de atraso de consolidação e não união. Resultados: Aos 6 meses, a incidência de atraso de consolidação foi de 28,9%. Os preditores de atraso de consolidação incluem cobertura de retalho, trauma de alta energia, fraturas expostas, uso de fixação externa como tratamento estagiado, porcentagem de contato cortical em fraturas simples, escore RUST e infecção pós-operatória. Após 12 meses, a taxa de não união foi de 15,6%, com fatores preditivos sendo necessidade de cobertura por retalho, lesão vascular, trauma de alta energia, fraturas expostas, uso de fixação externa como tratamento estagiado, porcentagem de contato cortical em fraturas simples e infecção pós-operatória. Nocardiosis is an infection caused by ubiquitous opportunistic bacteria and is rare in felines. In retrospective studies of the infection in the species, pyothorax was found in only about 5% of the cases described, with the most frequent forms being cutaneous and subcutaneous. This report describes Nocardia spp. as an etiologic agent of pyothorax in a feline leukemia virus (FeLV)-positive female cat. A 10-year-old female mixed-breed cat, positive for FeLV, with chronic kidney disease IRIS stage 2, was examined with a severe dyspneic onset, suspected of pleural effusion. It also had skin lesions in the interscapular region. The patient underwent thoracentesis, and a dense, creamy, fetid, and flocculated liquid was collected. Radiography was performed after draining the pleural fluid, which showed images suggestive of atelectasis of the left lung lobes and pneumonia. The collected material was sent for analysis, which found that it was a septic exudate. In addition, it was referred for bacterial culture in a special medium due to suspicion of nocardiosis. Long-term treatment with amoxicillin + clavulanic acid resolved the clinical case.


A nocardiose é uma infecção causada por bactérias oportunistas ubíquas e é rara em gatos. Em estudos retrospectivos da infecção na espécie, o piotórax foi encontrado em apenas cerca de 5% dos casos descritos, sendo as formas mais frequentes a cutânea e a subcutânea. Este relato descreve Nocardia spp. como agente etiológico do piotórax em um gato vírus da leucemia felina (FeLV)-positivo. Um gato mestiço de 10 anos de idade, positivo para o FeLV, com doença renal crônica IRIS estágio 2, foi examinado com dispneia grave, com suspeita de derrame pleural. Apresentava lesões cutâneas na região dorsal entre as escápulas. Após sedação, tricotomia e antissepsia, o paciente foi submetido à toracocentese e coletado líquido denso, cremoso, fétido e floculado. A radiografia foi realizada após drenagem do líquido pleural, que mostrou imagens sugestivas de atelectasia dos lobos pulmonares esquerdos e pneumonia. O material coletado foi encaminhado para análise, que constatou tratar-se de exsudato séptico. Além disso, foi encaminhado para cultura bacteriana em meio especial por suspeita de nocardiose. O tratamento prolongado com amoxicilina + ácido clavulânico foi suficiente para a resolução do caso clínico.

Introduction: Chronic tonsillitis has a global prevalence, ranging from 5% to 12%. Its clinical manifestations, like recurrent acute tonsillitis, tonsils hypertrophy, caseum and halitosis, can lead adult patients to be submitted to palatine tonsillectomy, surgery that has morbidity and the potential risk of complications, including severe bleeding. This article proposes a new therapy for chronic tonsillitis in adult patients using a fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, which is a fast, minimally invasive procedure capable of removing the need for the traditional tonsillectomy in many patients. The present research aimed to verify the efficacy of tonsillotomy by fractional ablation using the CO2 laser by comparing the number of bacterial infections, tonsils hypertrophy, halitosis and caseum; it is also aimed at analyzing the benefits, risks and complications of the technique. Methods: In this clinical prospective study, 20 patients were subjected to one session of tonsillotomy by fractional ablation and were followed up for a year. The control group was formed by the same patients in the pre-procedure period (one year) without treatment. Statistical analysis: The Wilcoxon paired test, Friedman tests, and multiple non-parametric comparisons were utilized to analyze the data (significance level of 5%). Results: No complications occurred, and the procedure was fast (30 seconds), safe and tolerated well without general anesthesia. After 1 year, there was a total remission of recurrent acute tonsillitis in 95% of the patients, and after 6 months there was a statistically significant improvement in halitosis and caseum, and tonsils size reduction (P<0.05). The level of satisfaction average was 10 after 3 months and 8 after one year. Conclusion: tonsillotomy by fractional ablation using the CO2 laser is a safe, efficient procedure for chronic tonsillitis in adults, and it can be incorporated into daily clinical practice.

Fleas and ticks are among the main ectoparasites that affect pets. The indiscriminate and incorrect use of chemical antiparasitics may be related to increased insect resistance and environmental contamination, requiring prospection for active ingredients that are less harmful to animals, humans and the environment. The use of essential oils and their isolated compounds has been reported as a potential alternative to synthetic antiparasitics, but there is a lack of studies involving the design and development of stable and safe natural products-based formulations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to establish LC50 and LC90 of Ocimum gratissimum essential oil and eugenol on immature stages and adults of Ctenocephalides felis felis and Rhipicephalus sanguineus; and to design and to determine the in vitro efficacy and residual effect of a natural product-based spray formulation for flea and tick control in pets. Bioassays were carried out according to the filter paper impregnation technique for fleas and through the larval packet test for ticks. O. gratissimum essential oil and eugenol presented pulicidal and acaricidal activity in vitro against immature stages and adults of C. felis felis and immature stages of R. sanguineus. The greater potency of eugenol against fleas and ticks led to the choice of eugenol as the active ingredient in the pharmaceutical form developed. The developed eugenol-based sprays presented adequate physical and chemical characteristics and stability, had pulicidal and acaricidal efficacy after 24 h and residual effect against fleas for up to 48 days.

The prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 exposure in children during the global COVID-19 pandemic has been underestimated due to lack of testing and the relatively mild symptoms in adolescents. Understanding the exposure rates in the pediatric population is essential as children are the last to receive vaccines and can act as a source for SARS-CoV-2 mutants that may threaten vaccine escape. This cross-sectional study aims to quantify the prevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 serum antibodies in children in a major city in México in the Spring of 2021 and determine if there are any demographic or socioeconomic correlating factors. We obtained socioeconomic information and blood samples from 1,005 children from 50 neighborhood clusters in Mérida, Yucatán, México. We then tested the sera of these participants for anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgM antibodies using lateral flow immunochromatography. We found that 25.5% of children in our cohort were positive for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and there was no correlation between age and antibody prevalence. Children that lived with large families were statistically more likely to have antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Spatial analyses identified two hotspots of high SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in the west of the city. These results indicate that a large urban population of unvaccinated children has been exposed to SARS-CoV-2 and that a major correlating factor was the number of people within the child's household with a minor correlation with particular geographical hotspots. There is also a larger population of children that may be susceptible to future infection upon easing of social distancing measures. These findings suggest that in future pandemic scenarios, limited public health resources can be best utilized on children living in large households in urban areas.

Several vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have been approved for controlling the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic worldwide. Antibody response is essential to understand the immune response to different viral targets after vaccination with different vaccine platforms. Thus, the main aim of this study was to describe how vaccination with two distinct SARS-CoV-2 vaccine preparations elicit IgG antibody specific responses against two antigenically relevant SARS-CoV-2 viral proteins: the receptor-binding domain (RBD) and the full-length spike (S). To do so, SARS-CoV-2 protein specific in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were standardized and tested against serum samples collected from 89 adults, recipients of either a single-dose of the Spike-encoding mRNA-based Pfizer/BioNTech (Pf-BNT) (70%, 62/89) or the Spike-encoding-Adenovirus-5-based CanSino Biologics Inc. (CSBIO) (30%, 27/89) in Merida, Mexico. Overall, we identified an IgG seroconversion rate of 88% (68/78) in all vaccinees after more than 25 days post-vaccination (dpv). Anti-RBD IgG-specific responses ranged from 90% (46/51) in the Pf-BNT vaccine at 25 dpv to 74% (20/27) in the CSBIO vaccine at 42 dpv. Compared to the S, the RBD IgG reactivity was significantly higher in both Pf-BNT (p < 0.004) and CSBIO (p < 0.003) vaccinees. Interestingly, in more than 50% of vaccine recipients, with no history of COVID-19 infection, antibodies against the nucleocapsid (N) protein were detected. Thus, participants were grouped either as naïve or pre-exposed vaccinees. Seroconversion rates after 25 and more dpv varies between 100% in Pf-BNT (22/22) and 75% (9/12) in CSBIO pre-exposed vaccinees, and 89% (26/29) and 73% (11/15) in Pf-BNT and CSBIO naïve vaccine recipients, respectively. In summary, observed seroconversion rates varied depending on the type of vaccine, previous infection with SARS-CoV-2, and the target viral antigen. Our results indicate that both vaccine preparations can induce detectable levels of IgG against the RBD or Spike in both naïve and SARS-CoV-2 pre-exposed vaccinees. Our study provides valuable and novel information about the serodiagnosis and the antibody response to vaccines in Mexico.

Objective To perform the translation and cultural adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese of the Children's Physical Activity Questionnaire Methods The process involved the stages of translation, synthesis, back-translation, and revision by the translation group. A prefinal version of the questionnaire was then created, and, subsequently, the final version. Results Due to the lifestyle of the population, eight activities described in the questionnaire were changed to adapt it to Brazilian culture: six sports activities and two leisure activities. Eight parents/legal guardians answered the questionnaire during the pretest, quickly, without inconsistencies, and without reporting difficulties in understanding when the final interview was conducted. Conclusion The translation and cultural adaptation of the Children's Physical Activity Questionnaire to Brazilian Portuguese resulted in the version called C-PAQ.PT.

Shrimp fisheries are among the most important fisheries worldwide, and shrimp culture has increased considerably in recent years. Most current studies on reproduction-related genes have been conducted on cultured shrimp. However, gene expression is intimately linked to physiological and environmental conditions, and therefore an organism's growth environment has a great influence on reproduction. Thus, gene expression profiling, should be applied in fisheries studies. Here, we identified the expression patterns of 76 reproduction-related genes in P. vannamei via the analysis of pooled transcriptomes from a time-series experiment encompassing a full circadian cycle. The expression patterns of genes associated both directly (Vtg, ODP, and ProR) and indirectly (FAMet, CruA1, and CruC1) with reproduction were evaluated, as these genes could be used as molecular markers of previtellogenic and vitellogenic maturation stages. The evaluated genes were prominently upregulated during vitellogenic stages, with specific expression patterns depending on the organism's environment, diet, and season. Vtg, ProR, ODP, and FaMet could serve as molecular markers for both wild and cultured organisms.

European freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) populations are declining despite a growing effort to conserve them. Here we used a combination of local ecological knowledge (LEK) and field sampling to assess past and current distribution and conservation status of this endangered species in Cávado and Neiva Rivers (Portugal). We performed face-to-face interviews in both rivers and sampled the entire area where the respondents confirmed the historical presence of this species. Abiotic characterization, water quality and fish diversity were also assessed in both rivers. We found that freshwater pearl mussels are now possibly extinct in Cávado River but almost 50% of the respondents confirm its presence in the past, especially elders that lived in villages near its historical distribution. To the contrary, and although the species is still present in Neiva River, only 3.8% of the respondents remembered its presence in the past. In both rivers, respondents suggested pollution as the most important explanation for the freshwater pearl mussels decline. However, nowadays both rivers present excellent water quality and trout Salmo trutta (the freshwater pearl mussel fish host) is still abundant. Since we identified the areas where the species was present in a recent past, this information is vital for possible management actions with the aim of re-introduce or increase the abundance of M. margaritifera populations and/or for the rehabilitation of habitats in both rivers. We also highlight the vital importance of getting LEK, mainly from elders, in order to avoid shifting baseline syndromes and to get qualitative accurate information of past references and/or experience with historical conditions. Results reported here reinforce concern about the conservation status of freshwater pearl mussel populations in Portugal and can be used to guide future research and management initiatives to better conserve this species.

BACKGROUND: The Amazon River is one of the largest in the world and receives huge amounts of terrestrial organic matter (TeOM) from the surrounding rainforest. Despite this TeOM is typically recalcitrant (i.e. resistant to degradation), only a small fraction of it reaches the ocean, pointing to a substantial TeOM degradation by the river microbiome. Yet, microbial genes involved in TeOM degradation in the Amazon River were barely known. Here, we examined the Amazon River microbiome by analysing 106 metagenomes from 30 sampling points distributed along the river. RESULTS: We constructed the Amazon River basin Microbial non-redundant Gene Catalogue (AMnrGC) that includes ~ 3.7 million non-redundant genes, affiliating mostly to bacteria. We found that the Amazon River microbiome contains a substantial gene-novelty compared to other relevant known environments (rivers and rainforest soil). Genes encoding for proteins potentially involved in lignin degradation pathways were correlated to tripartite tricarboxylates transporters and hemicellulose degradation machinery, pointing to a possible priming effect. Based on this, we propose a model on how the degradation of recalcitrant TeOM could be modulated by labile compounds in the Amazon River waters. Our results also suggest changes of the microbial community and its genomic potential along the river course. CONCLUSIONS: Our work contributes to expand significantly our comprehension of the world's largest river microbiome and its potential metabolism related to TeOM degradation. Furthermore, the produced gene catalogue (AMnrGC) represents an important resource for future research in tropical rivers. Video abstract.

This paper describes the methodology applied to generate simulated multipolarized L-band SAR images of the MAPSAR (Multi-Application Purpose SAR) satellite from the airborne SAR R99B sensor (SIVAM System). MAPSAR is a feasibility study conducted by INPE (National Institute for Space Research) and DLR (German Aerospace Center) targeting a satellite L-band SAR innovative mission for assessment, management and monitoring of natural resources. Examples of simulated products and their applications are briefly discussed.

UNLABELLED: Left atrial enlargement is common in many cardiac diseases; a major determinant of this enlargement is left ventricular diastolic pressure. Left atrial volume (LAV) has recently been linked to adverse prognosis. The objective of our study was to assess LAV as a prognostic marker in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and to correlate LAV with other known prognostic factors such as maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max) and pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (pro-BNP). METHODS: Our population consisted of 35 patients with DCM followed regularly in our hospital and with mean ejection fraction (EF) of 31+/-9.6%. All patients underwent routine 2D Doppler echocardiographic examination, TDI was used to obtain early peak velocity of the mitral annulus, and LAV was calculated using Simpson's method of disks. Pro-BNP was measured and cardiopulmonary exercise testing was also carried out. Mean follow-up was 24+/-4 months and new hospital admission due to heart failure, cardiac transplantation and death were considered cardiac events. RESULTS: All two-dimensional (left ventricular dimensions and volumes and EF) and conventional Doppler echocardiographic parameters (mitral inflow) were analyzed; mean LAV was 78.6+/-33 ml. Age and gender had no influence on LAV. LAV (and LAV indexed to body surface area [BSA]) showed an inverse correlation with VO2max (r=-0.48, p=0.008) and with pro-BNP (r=0.43, p=0.02). With regard to prognosis, LAV and LAV/BSA were associated with cardiac events (r=0.4, p=0.02), like other classic prognostic markers (EF, left ventricular volumes, mitral regurgitation and E/E'). The cut-off values of LAV and LAV/BSA for cardiac events on ROC curve analysis were 70 ml and 38 ml/m2 respectively. CONCLUSIONS: LAV (LAV/BSA) has incremental prognostic value in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and correlates with exercise tolerance and pro-BNP.

Despite an apparent geographic separation of the Amazon water bodies, they are an interconnected system. During floods, the microbiota of rivers, lakes, and soil combines. This study used metagenomics sequencing to survey the microbiota of the Amazon Basin lakes during flood season, showing important patterns in microbial communities.
