Background: Congenital anomalies, representing structural or functional abnormalities present at birth, pose a substantial global health challenge, affecting 8 million newborns annually. With 3.3 million succumbing before age five and 3.2 million facing physical or mental disability, their diverse causes necessitate comprehensive understanding for effective healthcare planning. This study explores the prevalence of congenital anomalies among newborns in the Abha Maternity and Children Hospital (MCH) in Abha, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional record-based study was conducted on newborns born between 2018 and 2022. Data were gathered in 4 months from September to December 2023. Purposive sampling was employed to select the case records of newborns with congenital anomalies after careful screening and considering inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data was acquired through a self-designed study tool, and the data were entered into Google Forms. Results: Congenital anomalies' five-year prevalence was 3.21%, and one year, in 2022, the prevalence was 4.02%. Female neonates exhibited higher anomalies (59.3%), and preterm births accounted for 39.6%, emphasizing their vulnerability. The findings indicate that consanguineous marriages are linked to 63.3% of anomalies, notably neural tube defects (25%) and congenital heart diseases (19.7%). Anomalies are not significantly associated with consanguinity or birth order, but maternal age, education, employment, and antenatal maternal medical issues are associated considerably. Conclusions: These study insights contribute to health planners planning targeted interventions and awareness programs that are crucial to mitigate risks associated with preterm births and consanguineous marriages. The promotion of 100% antenatal screening and prophylactic medication for high-risk women and couples is necessary to prevent inherited deformities. In future the Ministry of Health must plan large-group prospective research to better understand the associated risk factors that will help public health initiatives minimize congenital-associated neonatal mortality and improve pregnancy outcomes.

The severe respiratory infections in the current pandemic coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) have influenced more or less every human life. The first person to get infected with this virus was reported in the capital of Hubei province (Wuhan), China, in late December 2019. Since the disease has been declared a pandemic, research scholars and experts have been manufacturing new vaccines or targeted therapies to curb the spread of SARS-CoV-2. However, only limited options have emerged so far, which yet require complete scientific validation by long-term data collection regarding safety and efficacy. In the wake of the recent emerging wave of the pandemic viz omicron variant, changing facets of the viral genome and dearth of preventative and therapeutic possibilities for the management of COVID-19, the usage of Convalescent Plasma Therapy (CPT) may be looked at as a potentially viable option of treatment in the existing situation. Earlier, immune plasma has been used with success in the management of H1N1 influenza virus, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-1 epidemics. In the present unpredictable situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the CPT is used with a positive outcome amongst many infected individuals in different parts of the world with acceptable efficacy. This article aimed to present an up-to-date evaluation of existing literature on the efficacy of convalescent plasma as a potential therapy, its safety and effectiveness and the challenges in treating COVID-19.

Introduction (background): Headache is the primary complaint among students. Headaches mostly have multifactorial causes. The degree of headache severity significantly impacts attitudes, behavior, and academic performance. Objectives: Here, we investigate the demographic epidemiology of tension-type headaches (T.T.H.), and determine the clinical presentation and triggers of the tension-type among headache sufferers. Methods (settings, design): An institutional-based cross-sectional study (descriptive) was conducted on the medical and dental undergraduates at King Khalid University, Abha, Saudi Arabia, from 1 July 2021 to 31 December 2021. Data were gathered using a pre-designed questionnaire. A consecutive sampling method was used in a COVID-19-constrained environment. After preliminary screening of the study population, 460 samples were included. An electronic questionnaire was shared with them, and they were requested to respond. Results: More than half of the participants (258, 56.1%) experienced tension-type headaches, while the remaining 202 (43.9%) never felt a headache. Tension-type headaches manifested as heaviness of the head (44, 17.0%), tightness (126, 48.8%), and dull aching pain (66, 25.7%). Conclusions: T.T.H. is a prevalent condition with a significant impingement on academic work, and psychological health. Tension-type headache sufferers are advised to keep daily diaries to determine triggers, and plan for prevention and treatment progression.

INTRODUCTION: Development of bacterial resistance and antimicrobial side-effect has shifted the focus of research toward Ethnopharmacology. A biologically active compound derived from the plants may increase the effectiveness of antibiotic when used in combination. The present study aims to determine the synergistic antibacterial effect of ethanolic extracts of Punica granatum (pericarp), Commiphora molmol, Azadirachta indica (bark) in combination with amoxicillin, metronidazole, tetracycline, and azithromycin on periodontopathic bacteria: Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. METHODOLOGY: Periodontopathic bacterial strains were isolated from the plaque sample that was collected from periodontitis patients and grown under favorable conditions. Susceptibility of bacteria to the antibiotics and extracts was determined by disc diffusion method by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zones. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of plant extracts were evaluated against each bacterium. Synergistic effect of plant extract in combination with antibiotics was tested against each bacterium by measuring the diameter of zone of inhibition (ZOI). RESULTS: Findings revealed that all plant extracts exhibited an inhibitory effects on the proliferation and growth of periodontopathic bacteria. The maximum antibacterial effect was exhibited by C. molmol on P. gingivalis (ZOI = 20 ± 0.55 mm, MIC = 0.53 ± 0.24 mg/mL and MBC = 5.21 ± 1.81 mg/mL) (p < 0.05), meanwhile, no antibacterial activity was exhibited by P. granatum on T. forsythia. Synergistic antibacterial effect was recorded when plant extracts were used in combination with antibiotics. The best synergism was exhibited by P. granatum with amoxicillin against A. actinomycetemcomitans (24 ± 1.00 mm) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The synergistic test showed significant antibacterial activity when plant extracts were combined with antibiotics against all the experimented bacteria.

Ameloblastomas with multiple histologic variants are rare odontogenic neoplasm of mandible and maxilla, and have high recurrence rates if improperly treated. They are histologically benign, slow growing, and invasive tumors. These tumors are asymptomatic in nature, unless they attain a large size to cause expansion and perforation of adjacent tissues, for which patient might seek treatment. Due to their aggressive nature and high recurrence rate, treatment remains a matter of debate. Complete excision of lesion with least morbidity would be the therapeutic challenge. However, there is an increased risk of recurrence due to local treatment. Here in, we present a large multicystic recurrent ameloblastoma on right-body-ramus region of mandible in a 45-year-old woman who was managed by hemimandibulectomy.
