RESUMO

A central concern for large-scale sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IoT) has been battery capacity and how to recharge it. Recent advances have pointed to a technique capable of collecting energy from radio frequency (RF) waves called radio frequency-based energy harvesting (RF-EH) as a solution for low-power networks where cables or even changing the battery is unfeasible. The technical literature addresses energy harvesting techniques as an isolated block by dealing with energy harvesting apart from the other aspects inherent to the transmitter and receiver. Thus, the energy spent on data transmission cannot be used together to charge the battery and decode information. As an extension to them, we propose here a method that enables the information to be recovered from the battery charge by designing a sensor network operating with a semanticfunctional communication framework. Moreover, we propose an event-driven sensor network in which batteries are recharged by applying the technique RF-EH. In order to evaluate system performance, we investigated event signaling, event detection, empty battery, and signaling success rates, as well as the Age of Information (AoI). We discuss how the main parameters are related to the system behavior based on a representative case study, also discussing the battery charge behavior. Numerical results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

This paper analyzes the feasibility of the coexistence of telemetry and alarm messages employing Long-Range Wide-Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology in industrial environments. The regular telemetry messages come from periodic measurements from the majority of sensors while the alarm messages come from sensors whose transmissions are triggered by rarer (random) events that require highly reliable communication. To reach such a strict requirement, we propose here strategies of allocation of spreading factor, by treating alarm and regular (telemetry) messages differently. The potential of such allocation strategies has also been investigated under retransmission and diversity of gateways. Both indoor industrial plant and open-field scenarios are investigated. We compare the proposed solution with a benchmark scenario-where no alarm is considered-by using system level simulation. Our results show that it is possible to achieve high reliability with reasonably low delay for the alarm messages without significantly affecting the performance of the regular links.

This paper reviews the key information and communication technologies that are necessary to build an effective industrial energy management system considering the intermittence of renewable sources like wind and solar †. In particular, we first introduce the concept of software-defined energy networks in the context of industrial cyber-physical systems aiming at the optimal energy resource allocation in terms of its environmental impact. The task is formulated as a dynamic scheduling problem where supply and demand must match at minute-level timescale, also considering energy storage units. The use of (explainable and trustworthy) artificial intelligence (AI), (informative) networked data, demand-side management, machine-type (wireless) communications, and energy-aware scheduling in industrial plants are explored in detail. The paper also provides a framework for understanding the complexities of managing renewable energy sources in industrial plants while maintaining efficiency and environmental sustainability.

RESUMO

The discussions around the unsustainability of the dominant socio-economic structures have yet to produce solutions to address the escalating problems we face as a species. Such discussions, this paper argues, are hindered by the limited scope of the proposed solutions within a business-as-usual context as well as by the underlying technological rationale upon which these solutions are developed. In this paper, we conceptualize a radical sustainable alternative to the energy conundrum based on an emerging mode of production and a commons-based political economy. We propose a commons-oriented Energy Internet as a potential system for energy production and consumption, which may be better suited to tackle the current issues society faces. We conclude by referring to some of the challenges that the implementation of such a proposal would entail.

People use Online Social Networks (OSNs) to express their opinions and feelings about many topics. Depending on the nature of an event and its dissemination rate in OSNs, and considering specific regions, the users' behavior can drastically change over a specific period of time. In this context, this work aims to propose an event detection system at the early stages of an event based on changes in the users' behavior in an OSN. This system can detect an event of any subject, and thus, it can be used for different purposes. The proposed event detection system is composed of the following main modules: (1) determination of the user's location, (2) message extraction from an OSN, (3) topic identification using natural language processing (NLP) based on the Deep Belief Network (DBN), (4) the user behavior change analyzer in the OSN, and (5) affective analysis for emotion identification based on a tree-convolutional neural network (tree-CNN). In the case of public health, the early event detection is very relevant for the population and the authorities in order to be able take corrective actions. Hence, the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is used as a case study in this work. For performance validation, the modules related to the topic identification and affective analysis were compared with other similar solutions or implemented with other machine learning algorithms. In the performance assessment, the proposed event detection system achieved an accuracy higher than 0.90, while other similar methods reached accuracy values less than 0.74. Additionally, our proposed system was able to detect an event almost three days earlier than the other methods. Furthermore, the information provided by the system permits to understand the predominant characteristics of an event, such as keywords and emotion type of messages.

This paper proposes a simple model to capture the complexity of multilayer systems where their constituent layers affect, and are affected by, each other. The physical layer is a circuit composed by a power source and resistors in parallel. Every individual agent aims at maximizing its own delivered power by adding, removing or keeping the resistors it has; the delivered power is in turn a non-linear function that depends on the other agents' behavior, its own internal state, its global state perception, the information received from its neighbors via the communication network and a randomized selfishness. We develop an agent-based simulation to analyze the effects of number of agents (system size), communication network topology, communication errors and the minimum power gain that triggers a behavioral change on the system dynamic. Our results show that a wave-like behavior at macro-level (caused by individual changes in the decision layer) can only emerge for a specific system size. The ratio between cooperators and defectors depends on the minimum gain assumed-lower minimal gains lead to less cooperation, and vice-versa. Different communication network topologies imply different levels of power utilization and fairness at the physical layer, and a certain level of error in the communication layer induces more cooperation.
