RESUMO

The global prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) has been an environmental menace. Tons of drug wastes from antiretroviral therapy are released into the environment annually. We, for the first time, employed the novel dielectric barrier atmospheric non-thermal plasma (DBANP) discharge, to mitigate the inadvertent pollution arising from the antiretroviral therapy. A 40-min treatment of nevirapine achieved >94 % (0.075 min-1) removal efficiency at discharge power of 63.5 W and plasma working gas of atmospheric air. Chemical probes confirmed •OH, ONOO- and eaq- as the dominant reactive species whilst further revealing the reaction acceleration role of NaNO3 and CCl4 which are known reaction terminators. The commonly coexisting inorganic anions potentiated nevirapine removal with over 98 % efficiency, achieving the highest rate constant of 0.148 min-1 in this study. Moreover, the initial solution pH (1.5-11.1) was no limiting factor either. The insensitivity of the DBANP discharge to actual water matrices was an eminent inference of its potential applicability in practical conditions. With reference to data obtained from the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer analysis, nevirapine degradation pathway was proposed. A nucleophilic attack by ONOO- at the cyclopropyl group and •OH attack at the carbonyl carbon of the amide group, respectively, initiated nevirapine degradation process. It is anticipated that the findings herein, will provide new insights into antiretroviral drug waste management in environmental waters using the innovative and green non-thermal plasma process.

Artemisinin-based combinations (ACTs) are World Health Organization-recommended treatment for malaria. Artemether (A) and lumefantrine (LUM) were the first co-formulated ACT and first-line treatment for malaria globally, artemether is dihydroartemisinin's (DHA's) prodrug. Artemisinins and LUM face low aqueous solubility while artemisinin has low bioavailability and short half-life thus requiring continuous dosage to maintain adequate therapeutic drug-plasma concentration. This study aimed at improving ACTs limitations by nano-formulating DHA-LUM using solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) as nanocarrier. SLNs were prepared by modified solvent extraction method based on water-in-oil-in-water double emulsion. Mean particle size, polydispersity index and zeta potential were 308.4 nm, 0.29 and -16.0 mV respectively. Nanoencapsulation efficiencies and drug loading of DHA and LUM were 93.9%, 33.7%, 11.9%, and 24.10% respectively. Nanoparticles were spherically shaped and drugs followed Kors-Peppas release model, steadily released for over 72 h. DHA-LUM-SLNs were 31% more efficacious than conventional oral doses in clearing Plasmodium berghei from infected Swiss albino mice.

Consumption of poultry meat, eggs, and other animal-sourced commodities has dramatically risen by almost 86 %, with the demand of indigenous chicken products almost doubling over the past few decades. In Kenya, poultry farmers prefer indigenous chicken (IC) due to their resilience to harsh climatic conditions, high feed conversion rates, delicious end products, ability to scavenge and potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions among other factors. Despite the high demand for poultry and its products, the gap between demand and production remains high. Poultry farmers try to keep pace with the demand by integrating the recommended improved IC breeds into their production system. Although there exists some understanding on the determinants of the farmers to adopt improved IC, still there is scanty information on how socio-psychological factors influence the intention to adoption improved IC among the farmers in Kenya. Thus, this study sought to investigate the determinants of intention to adopt improved IC while specially focusing on the role of socio-psychological factors. A total of 374 IC farmers in Machakos county were selected using a multistage sampling technique. Partial Least Square - Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed to analyze the data. Results from descriptive statistics showed that approximately 90 % of IC farmers in the study area were aware of the improved indigenous chicken breeds. However, the adoption of the improved IC was below average (44.9 %). The path analysis results revealed that Subjective Norm (SN) was the main determinant of farmer's intention to adopt improved IC breeds, followed by Attitude (ATT) and Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC). The study recommends more emphasis to be given to psycho-social issues through well designed public and private interventions that will promote adoption of improved breeds among IC farmers.
