RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Elder suicide is a serious concern in many countries, including South Korea. Various policies and programs to prevent elder suicide are essential; however, further understanding of this phenomenon is necessary. The current study, therefore, developed a model for understanding the underlying mechanism of suicidal ideation in older adults in South Korea. The model was based on Andersen's theory (2021), which explains the path from social relationships to mental health. METHODS: This study was conducted utilizing meta-analytic structural equation modeling in accordance with a pooled correlation matrix. We used data from 93 existing studies systematically identified in nine academic databases. RESULTS: The fit statistics show that our model fits the data well. The results demonstrated that suicidal ideation was directly affected by abuse, depression, and self-esteem but not by family relationships. Depression significantly mediated the relationship between abuse and suicidal ideation and between family relationships and suicidal ideation. CONCLUSION: Social relationships play an important role in determining mental health among Korean older adults, consistent with Andersen's theory. Prevention of elder abuse and depression is essential in preventing suicide among older adults in South Korea.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: As the age of exposure to screen media has decreased, problematic smartphone usage is becoming more prevalent among younger children. As children's smartphone use is often determined by their caregivers, understanding their motivations for allowing young children to use smartphones is crucial. This study aimed to explore the behavioral patterns of main caregivers in South Korea related to their young children's smartphone usage and the underlying motivations. DESIGN AND METHODS: Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted, audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using grounded theory methodology. RESULTS: Fifteen participants from South Korea, identifying as main caregivers of young children under six years of age and expressing concerns about their children's smartphone usage patterns, were recruited. A core category describing caregiver' behaviors of managing children to use smartphones was identified as "Maintaining a vicious cycle to seek comfort in parenting." Their behavioral patterns appeared to be cyclical, alternating between permitting and restricting their children's smartphone use. They permitted their children to use smartphones to decrease their parenting burdens. However, this led to discomfort as they perceived the negative impacts of smartphones on their children and felt guilty. Consequently, they limited smartphone use, which increased their parental burden again. CONCLUSION: Parental education and policy efforts are essential to prevent risks associated with children's problematic smartphone usage. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: During regular health checkups for young children, nurses should assess potential smartphone overuse and related problems, considering caregiver motivations.

RESUMO

This study sought to examine the association between male-to-female physical, psychological, and sexual violence and controlling behaviors of male partners. Further, the moderating effect of insecure attachment style on this association was examined in the context of South Korea. Existing national data collected from a representative Korean sample of 2,000 unmarried men was utilized. Findings indicated controlling behaviors among men were positively and negatively associated with psychological and physical violence, respectively, and no association was observed with sexual violence against female partners. Anxious attachment moderated the relationship between control over partner and psychological abuse. The avoidant attachment was identified as a quasi and pure moderator for the associations between control over the partner and physical and sexual violence, respectively.

RESUMO

Our study investigated the incidence of secondary nonhematologic malignancies in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) and explored its risk compared to the general population. A population-based case cohorts with adult patients who received allo-SCT between January 2002 and December 2018 and a control cohort with matched general population were extracted from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Each case and control cohort included 5177 patients. With a median follow-up of 2374 days for the case cohort and 2269 days for the control cohort, the 10-year cumulative incidence rate of nonhematologic malignancy was significantly higher in the case cohort compared to the control cohort (4.23% vs 2.3%, hazard ratio [HR] 1.73, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.32-2.25, P < .001). The sub-class analysis according to cancer-site revealed significantly higher risks of 10-year cumulative incidence for cancers of head, neck and esophagus (HR 3.19, 95% CI 1.34-7.59, P = .003); cancers involving upper gastrointestinal tract (HR 3.74, 95% CI 1.58-8.85, P < .001), colorectal cancer (HR 2.02, 95% CI 1.04-3.91, P = .029), thyroid cancer (HR 2.09, 95% CI 1.1-3.97, P = .012), gynecological cancer (HR 2.69, 95% CI 1.04-6.96, P = .048) in the case cohort compared to the control cohort. No significant differences were detected for cancers involving lung, mediastinum and heart, breast cancer in female, cancers of the hepatobiliary and pancreatic system and cancers associated with urological system. These findings suggest the need for enhanced screening for nonhematologic malignancies in allo-SCT recipients compared to the general population.

RESUMO

The authors aimed to investigate the effects of a laughter therapy (LT) program on the acculturative stress, anxiety, depression, salivary cortisol, and salivary IgA of married immigrant women in South Korea. A randomized waiting-list control design was utilized. The 19 experimental group participants were given LT twice a week for 2 weeks, whereas the 22 participants in the waiting-list control group received no treatment during the same period but received it afterward. Outcomes were measured right after the completion of the intervention and 2 weeks later. The experimental group showed significantly decreased levels of acculturative stress, anxiety, depression, and salivary cortisol compared to the control group. As for salivary IgA, however, the experimental group showed no statistically significant decrease compared to the control group. An LT program can be a good option for married immigrant women undergoing acculturation experiences in consideration of its effectiveness.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the contribution of supplement use to total nutrient intake, the prevalence of inadequate nutrient intake and the factors associated with supplement use among breast cancer survivors. METHODS: A total of 701 Korean breast cancer survivors were included. We calculated the contribution of dietary supplements to total nutrient intake and the proportion of the population below the estimated average requirements (EARs) or exceeding the tolerable upper intake levels (ULs). Stepwise logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with dietary supplement use. RESULTS: A total of 66.5% of the survivors used dietary supplements, with multivitamins and minerals being the most commonly consumed ones. The per cent contribution of supplement to the total intake was the highest for vitamin C. 28.2%-55.4% of the non-users consumed below the EAR of riboflavin, folate and calcium; 6.1%, 4.9% and 6.5% of the supplement users consumed above the UL of vitamins A and C, and iron, respectively. Supplement users had higher education levels or longer survival time. CONCLUSION: 66.5% of Korean breast cancer survivors used dietary supplements. A higher education level or prolonged survival time was associated with higher use of dietary supplements.

RESUMO

Women with endometriosis may experience uncertainty owing to the characteristics of the disease, including vague symptom patterns, delayed diagnosis, and long-term management with no cure. However, women use various coping strategies to adapt to the uncertainty caused by their endometriosis. This descriptive qualitative study explored the coping experiences of women with endometriosis to reduce their uncertainty about the disease and to achieve successful adaptation to their lives with endometriosis. By using convenience and purposive sampling methods, qualitative data were collected from 14 women in South Korea (mean age = 37.7 years, age range = 27-54 years), who were diagnosed with endometriosis through laparoscopy or open surgery. All interview data were thematically analyzed. Four themes were identified as adaptive coping experiences: (1) gaining self-control over the ambiguous disease; (2) regaining the daily routines destroyed by the disease; (3) being emotionally supported and expressing oneself when feeling unsupported by society; and (4) taking an active role in one's treatment plan by being self-directed. Patients' sense of self-control and self-directedness regarding the disease and the treatment process were important to adapt to life with endometriosis. In addition, regaining stable daily routines as well as being emotionally supported were critical for decreasing their uncertainty. This paper has widespread implications, including the need for training or a continuing education program for health professionals to enhance their competencies when caring for women with endometriosis and the need for social efforts to increase awareness of the disease.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive and simple method for the simultaneous determination of anthelmintic and antiprotozoal drug residues in fish. For sample preparation, we used the "quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe" (QuEChERS) method with a simple modification. The sample was extracted with water and 1% formic acid in acetonitrile/methanol (MeCN/MeOH) (95:5, v/v), followed by phase separation (salting out) with MgSO4 and NaCl (4:1, w/w). After centrifugation, an aliquot of the extract was purified by dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. The method was validated at three concentration levels for all matrices, in accordance with the Codex guidelines (CAC/GL-71). Quantitative analysis was performed using the method of matrix-matched calibration. The recoveries were between 60.6% and 119.9%, with coefficients of variation (CV) <30% for all matrices. The limit of quantitation (LOQ) of the method ranged from 0.02 µg kg-1 to 4.8 µg kg-1 for all matrices. This comprehensive method can be used for the investigation of both anthelmintic and antiprotozoal drugs belonging to different chemical families in fishery products.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the acceptability and impact of a bystander program (With You Education) in South Korea, designed to enhance the competencies of friend-supporters to help victims of dating violence (DV). To assess the potential impact of the program, the participants (n = 46) were asked to complete pre-, post-, and 1-year follow-up surveys and take part in a focused group interview after the training. Participants exhibited significant changes from pretest to posttest evaluation in terms of their competencies as a supporter. Most improvements were sustained over time. Four qualitative themes revealed the multilayered outcomes of this program: increased readiness to help, awareness of DV, beginning to understand the victims, and awareness of DV as a public health problem. With You Education was seen to be an acceptable program for young adults, which can be potentially utilized as a formal violence-related education.

RESUMO

Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) lyase is an intracellular enzyme that catalyzes the irreversible degradation of S1P and has been suggested as a therapeutic target for the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris. Because S1P induces differentiation of keratinocytes, we examined whether modulation of S1P lyase and altered intracellular S1P levels regulate proliferation and differentiation of human neonatal epidermal keratinocyte (HEKn) cells. To identify the physiological functions of S1P lyase in skin, we inhibited S1P lyase in HEKn cells with an S1P lyase-specific inhibitor (SLI) and with S1P lyase 1 (SGPL1)-specific siRNA (siSGPL1). In HEKn cells, pharmacological treatment with the SLI caused G1 arrest by upregulation of p21 and p27 and induced keratin 1, an early differentiation marker. Similarly, genetic suppression by siSGPL1 arrested the cell cycle at the G1 phase and activated differentiation. In addition, enzyme suppression by siSGPL1 upregulated keratin 1 and differentiation markers including involucrin and loricrin. When hyperproliferation of HEKn cells was induced by interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-22, pharmacologic inhibition of S1P lyase by SLI decreased proliferation and activated differentiation of HEKn cells simultaneously. In addition, SLI administration ameliorated imiquimod-induced psoriatic symptoms including erythema, scaling, and epidermal thickness in vivo. We thus demonstrated that S1P lyase inhibition reduces cell proliferation and induces keratinocyte differentiation, and that inhibition may attenuate psoriasiform changes. Collectively, these findings suggest that S1P lyase is a modulating factor for proliferation and differentiation, and support its potential as a therapeutic target for psoriasis in human keratinocytes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Water soluble polysaccharide derived from green tea (WSP) is produced as byproducts when catechins were extracted from green tea. Although inhibitory effect of green tea catechins on the glucose transport in small intestine has been studied, the hypoglycemic efficacy of the WSP or its combinational effect has not been studied. In order to investigate hypoglycemic efficacy of the WSP or its combinational effect with green tea extract (GTE), co-consumption of GTE and WSP with wheat starch was investigated using in vitro digestion coupled with Caco-2 cells. The mechanism of the intestinal glucose transport was elucidated throughout the gene expression of the intestinal glucose transporters, which included sodium dependent glucose transporter (SGLT1) and glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2), using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). RESULTS: The co-digestion of wheat starch with GTE during the small intestinal phase was the most rapidly digested into reducing sugar (73.96 g L-1 ) compared to itself (48.44 g L-1 ), WSP (60.35 g L-1 ), and GTE + WSP (61.81 g L-1 ). Intestinal glucose transport was 11.82, 7.59, 4.49, and 2.40% for wheat starch, wheat starch with GTE, WSP, and GTE + WSP, respectively. The highest decreased expression pattern in SGLT1 was observed when cells treated with wheat starch + GTE + WSP (0.66-fold) compared to GTE or WSP treatment. CONCLUSION: The results suggested that co-consumption of green tea derived products with wheat starch could delay the intestinal absorption of glucose. Results from the current study suggested that GTE and WSP could be the useful supplements of dietary therapy for hyperglycemia to delay glucose absorption. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Culture has become increasingly important concepts in nursing in the era of globalization. Nurses' cultural biases and prejudices are huge obstacles to their caring for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. Therefore, this study examined sexism among nursing students from two patriarchal societies: Turkey influenced by Islam, and South Korea influenced by Confucianism. For this comparative study, we used the survey data from the sample of 560 nursing students, 309 from Turkey and 251 from South Korea. The findings showed that both samples showed high levels of sexism, both hostile and benevolent. When comparing the two samples, Turkish nursing students showed significantly higher sexism than did Korean students. Additionally, in both countries, male participants showed higher scores on sexism, especially hostile sexism. In terms of age, older students in Turkey showed lower levels of benevolent sexism. We hope the findings of this study can provide evidence to develop customized transcultural nursing education content in the context of different ethnicities and to help nurses and nursing students from specific cultural backgrounds in becoming aware of their own cultures.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of gender-related perceptions and experiences on nursing professionalism among nursing students who grew up in a culture with strong gender norms. Data were collected through an online survey from a convenience sample of nursing students in South Korea. To examine gender-related perceptions, we assessed beliefs in gender stereotypes and the level of benevolent sexism. Direct and indirect experiences of gender violence were assessed by examining participants' histories of involvement in intimate partner violence and witnessing parental violence. Nursing students' gender-related perceptions were significantly related to their nursing professionalism, whereas their experiences of gender violence were non-significantly related. More specifically, those who had stronger gender stereotypes showed a weaker perception of nursing professionalism. In addition, benevolent sexism was a strong predictor of nursing professionalism. We strongly recommend that nursing educators address gender-related issues in their nursing education, as this might help to minimize gender-stereotyped thoughts among nursing students, which can hamper their growth as professionals.

RESUMO

Non enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensing was developed based on pristine Cu Nanopartilces (NPs)/Glassy Carbon Electrode (GCE) which can be accomplished by simple green method via ocimum tenuiflorum leaf extract. Then, the affect of leaf extract addition on improving Structural, Optical and electrochemical properties of pristine cu NPs was investigated. The synthesized Cu NPs were characterized with X-ray diffraction (X-ray), Uv-Visible spectroscopy (Uv-Vis), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Particle size distribution (PSA), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for structural optical and morphological studies respectively. The synthesized Cu NPs were coated over glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to study the electrochemical response of glucose by cyclic voltammetry and ampherometer. The results indicates that the modified biosensor shows a remarkable sensitivity (1065.21 µA mM-1 cm-2), rapid response time (<3s), wide linear range (1 to 7.2 mM), low detection limit (0.038 µM at S/N = 3). Therefore, the prepared Cu NPs by the Novel Bio-mediated route were exploited to construct a non-enzymatic glucose biosensor for sustainable clinical field applications.

RESUMO

Children of alcoholics (COAs) are those who have grown up with parental alcoholism. The purpose of this study was to understand the lives of Korean COAs within a Korean cultural context, influenced by Confucianism. Prior literature has extensively reported about the adverse life experiences of COAs related to their alcohol dependent parents. Indeed, most of these studies assume the U.S.- or Western-centric perspective. However, in order to provide culture-specific care, health professionals who provide care for diverse ethnic families have to understand the cultural influences on the families which have an ill family member. Data were collected from 20 Korean adult children through semi-structured interviews. All interviews were audio-recorded and fully transcribed. Thematic analysis was used for the data analysis. The lives of Korean COAs were described with four themes, namely: "Losing family," "Life with holding a bomb," "My life ruined," and "Being bound." CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the findings of this study demonstrated how cultural components could shape individual's life experiences in a family having an alcohol dependent family member. This study would be helpful for health professionals to deeply understand the alcoholic family members within a specific cultural background as well as to build a cultural-specific care-plans for them.

RESUMO

Bystanders play a crucial role in assisting and rescuing victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) or sexual assault, thereby preventing further harm. Consequently, an increasing amount of research has focused on improving bystander interventions in such situations. While many existing scales that measure bystanders' willingness to intervene and their behaviors are likely tailored to Western settings and primarily focused on preventing sexual assaults, pursuing diversity to make these scales applicable to a variety of contexts is necessary. This study aimed to develop and validate a scale from South Korean samples that measure the likely level of bystander engagement in witnessed IPV situations, named the Bystander Engagement Scale for Witnessed Intimate Partner Violence (BESW-IPV). Preliminary items, developed to describe various IPV situations that a bystander might witness, underwent content validity testing through expert review and cognitive focus group interviews. Afterward, the scale was administered to 311 participants from the target population in South Korea. The scale's factor structure was assessed through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmed through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The reliability and validity were rigorously assessed. The final version of the BESW-IPV comprised 28 items. Through EFA, "direct IPV indicators" and "indirect IPV indicators" were identified. Together, these factors accounted for 76.10% of the total variance. CFA affirmed that the final model offers an acceptable fit. The scale's convergent and discriminant validities were also well established. The Cronbach's alpha and the McDonald's omega values were 0.98 and 0.99, respectively. In contrast to many existing tools that measure bystander intervention predominantly within the confines of Western educational settings, we believe that the BESW-IPV can be applied in broader contexts, especially in patriarchal environments. Further research is required to translate and validate this tool in different cultural contexts.

RESUMO

The phenology has gained considerably more attention in recent times of climate change. The transition from vegetative to reproductive phases is a critical process in the life history of plants, closely tied to phenology. In an era of climate change, understanding how environmental factors affect this transition is of paramount importance. This study consisted of field surveys and a greenhouse experiment on the reproductive biology of Northern pipevine (Aristolochia contorta Bunge). During field surveys, we investigated the environmental factors and growth characteristics of mature A. contorta, with a focus on both its vegetative and reproductive phases. In its successful flowering during the reproductive phase, A. contorta grew under the conditions of 40% relative light intensity and 24% soil moisture content, and had a vertical rhizome. In the greenhouse experiments, we examined the impact of increased CO2 concentration on the growth and development of 10-year-old A. contorta, considering the effect of rhizome direction. Planted with a vertical rhizome direction, A. contorta exhibited sufficient growth for flowering under ambient CO2 concentrations. In contrast, when planted with a horizontal rhizome direction, it was noted to significantly impede successful growth and flowering under elevated CO2 concentrations. This hindered the process of flowering, highlighting the pivotal role of substantial vegetative growth in achieving successful flowering. Furthermore, we observed a higher number of underground buds and shoots under the conditions of elevated CO2 concentration and a horizontal rhizome direction instead of flowering. Elevated CO2 concentrations also exhibited diverse effects on mature A. contorta's flower traits, resulting in smaller flower size, shorter longevity, and reduced stigma receptivity, and pollen viability. The study shed light on elevated CO2 concentrations can hinder growth, potentially obstructing sexual reproduction and diminishing genetic diversity.

RESUMO

In this study, to address the stability issues, we synthesized a CsPbBr3-coated poly (maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene) (CsPbBr3/PMA) using a modified hot-injection method. The CsPbBr3/PMA perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) exhibited effective green emission at 522 nm with an improved photoluminescence quantum yield (86.8 %) compared to traditional CsPbBr3 PNCs (54.2 %). The ligands in the polymer coating can bond with the uncoordinated Pb and Br ions on the surface of PNCs to minimize surface defects and avoid exposure to the external environment, enhancing the stability of the perovskites. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectra showed longer lifetimes for CsPbBr3/PMA PNCs, while transient absorption measurements provided valuable insights into the intraband hot-exciton relaxation and recombination. We demonstrate the potential application of CSPbBr3/PMA in a down-conversion white-light-emitting diode (LED) by coupling green CsPbBr3/PMA and red K2SiF6:Mn4+ phosphor-coated glass slides onto a 455-nm blue GaN LED. The white LED produced a white light with the International Commission on Illumination color coordinates of (0.323, 0.345), luminous efficiency of 58.4 lm/W, and color rendering index of 83.2. The fabricated, white-LED system obtained a wide color gamut of 125.3 % of the National Television Standards Committee and 98.9 % of Rec. 2020. The findings demonstrate that CsPbBr3/PMA can be an efficient down-conversion material for white LEDs and backlighting.
