RESUMO

Magnetic anisotropy in atomically thin correlated heterostructures is essential for exploring quantum magnetic phases for next-generation spintronics. Whereas previous studies have mostly focused on van der Waals systems, here we investigate the impact of dimensionality of epitaxially grown correlated oxides down to the monolayer limit on structural, magnetic, and orbital anisotropies. By designing oxide superlattices with a correlated ferromagnetic SrRuO3 and nonmagnetic SrTiO3 layers, we observed modulated ferromagnetic behavior with the change of the SrRuO3 thickness. Especially, for three-unit-cell-thick layers, we observe a significant 1500% improvement of the coercive field in the anomalous Hall effect, which cannot be solely attributed to the dimensional crossover in ferromagnetism. The atomic-scale heterostructures further reveal the systematic modulation of anisotropy for the lattice structure and orbital hybridization, explaining the enhanced magnetic anisotropy. Our findings provide valuable insights into engineering the anisotropic hybridization of synthetic magnetic crystals, offering a tunable spin order for various applications.

In this paper, we propose a deployable broadband mesh reflector antenna for use in signals intelligence (SIGINT) satellite systems, considering performance degradation due to shape deformation. To maximize gain by increasing the diameter of the reflector while reducing the weight of the antenna, the reflector of the antenna is designed using lightweight silver-coated Teflon mesh. The mesh reflectors are typically expanded by tension to maintain their parabolic structure; thus, shape deformation cannot be avoided. This shape deformation results in shape differences between the surface of the mesh reflector and the ideal parabolic reflector, thus resulting in the degradation of the performance of the mesh reflector antenna. To observe this degradation, we analyze antenna performance according to the number of arms, the number of joints, the feed distance, and the distance from the reflector center to each joint. The performance of the mesh reflector antenna is examined using an effective lossy conducting surface (ELCS) that has the same reflectivity as the silver-coated Teflon mesh to reduce simulation time and computing resources. The designed silver-coated Teflon mesh reflector and the double-ridged feed antenna are fabricated, and the bore-sight gain is measured using the three-antenna method. The measured bore-sight gain of the proposed antenna is 31.6 dBi at 10 GHz, and the measured and simulated results show an average difference of 3.28 dB from 2 GHz to 18 GHz. The proposed deployable mesh reflector antenna can be used in a variety of applications where small stowed volume is required for mobility, such as mobile high-gain antennas as well as satellite antenna systems. Through this study, we demonstrate that shape deformation of the mesh reflector surface significantly affects the performance of reflector antennas.

The magnetic anisotropy of low-dimensional Mott systems exhibits unexpected magnetotransport behavior useful for spin-based quantum electronics. Yet, the anisotropy of natural materials is inherently determined by the crystal structure, highly limiting its engineering. The magnetic anisotropy modulation near a digitized dimensional Mott boundary in artificial superlattices composed of a correlated magnetic monolayer SrRuO3 and nonmagnetic SrTiO3 , is demonstrated. The magnetic anisotropy is initially engineered by modulating the interlayer coupling strength between the magnetic monolayers. Interestingly, when the interlayer coupling strength is maximized, a nearly degenerate state is realized, in which the anisotropic magnetotransport is strongly influenced by both the thermal and magnetic energy scales. The results offer a new digitized control for magnetic anisotropy in low-dimensional Mott systems, inspiring promising integration of Mottronics and spintronics.

Due to its topological protection, the magnetic skyrmion has been intensively studied for both fundamental aspects and spintronics applications. However, despite recent advancements in skyrmion research, the deterministic creation of isolated skyrmions in a generic perpendicularly magnetized film is still one of the most essential and challenging techniques. Here, we present a method to create magnetic skyrmions in typical perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) films by applying a magnetic field pulse and a method to determine the magnitude of the required external magnetic fields. Furthermore, to demonstrate the usefulness of this result for future skyrmion research, we also experimentally study the PMA dependence on the minimum size of skyrmions. Although field-driven skyrmion generation is unsuitable for device application, this result can provide an easier approach for obtaining isolated skyrmions, making skyrmion-based research more accessible.

To understand the relationships between nuclear organization and gene expression in a model system, we employed three-dimensional imaging and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-chromosome conformation capture (3C) techniques to investigate the topographies of the immunoglobulin (Ig) genes and transcripts during B-cell development. Remarkably, in plasma cells, when antibody synthesis peaks, active Ig genes residing on three different chromosomes exhibit pronounced colocalizations in transcription factories, often near the nuclear periphery, and display trans-chromosomal enhancer interactions, and their transcripts frequently share interchromatin trafficking channels. Conceptually, these features of nuclear organization maximize coordinated transcriptional and transcript trafficking control for potentiating the optimal cytoplasmic assembly of the resulting translation products into protein multimers.

Crlz-1 was expressed along with Wnt3a in the rapidly proliferating centroblasts within the dark zone of germinal center (GC) during humoral immune responses. Significantly, Crlz-1 relayed a Wnt/ß-catenin signal to the expression of Bcl-6, the master regulator of centroblasts, by mobilizing the cytoplasmic CBFß into the nucleus to allow Runx/CBFß heterodimerization and its subsequent binding to the Bcl-6 promoter. The knockdown of Crlz-1 or ß-catenin, as well as inhibition of Wnt signaling in the centroblasts, led to the decreased expression of Bcl-6 and, thereby, the altered expression of its various target genes, resulting in their diminished proliferation. Consistently, the administration of Wnt inhibitors into the immunized mice impaired or abolished GC reaction, with concomitant decreases of Crlz-1 and Bcl-6 expression and, thus, centroblastic proliferation. Our observation that Wnt/ß-catenin signaling via Crlz-1 regulates GC reaction would suggest developmental strategies for vaccine adjuvants and cancer therapeutics because both immune efficacy and accidental lymphoma depend on GC reaction. Our studies of Crlz-1 were performed using human cell lines, mice, and their primary cells.

Transcriptome analysis of human cells has revealed that intron retention controls the expression of a large number of genes with diverse cellular functions. Detained introns (DI) constitute a subgroup of transcripts with retained introns that are not exported to the cytoplasm but instead remain in the nucleus. Previous studies reported that the splicing of DIs in the CLK1 transcript is post-transcriptionally induced to produce mature mRNA in the absence of new transcription. Thus, CLK1-DI serves as a precursor or "reservoir" for the CLK1 mRNA. However, whether this is a universal mechanism for gene regulation by intron detention remains unknown. The MAT2A gene encodes S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) synthetase and it contains a DI that is regulated in response to intracellular SAM levels. We used three independent assays to assess the precursor-product relationship between MAT2A-DI and MAT2A mRNA. In contrast to CLK1-DI, these data support a model in which the MAT2A-DI transcript is not a precursor to mRNA but is instead a "dead-end" RNA fated for nuclear decay. Additionally, we show that in SAM-deprived conditions the cotranscriptional splicing of MAT2A detained introns increases. We conclude that polyadenylated RNAs with DIs can have at least two distinct fates. They can serve as nuclear reservoirs of pre-mRNAs available for rapid induction by the cell, or they constitute dead-end RNAs that are degraded in the nucleus.

Artificial crystals synthesized by atomic-scale epitaxy provide the ability to control the dimensions of the quantum phases and associated phase transitions via precise thickness modulation. In particular, the reduction in dimensionality via quantized control of atomic layers is a powerful approach to revealing hidden electronic and magnetic phases. Here, we demonstrate a dimensionality-controlled and induced metal-insulator transition (MIT) in atomically designed superlattices by synthesizing a genuine two-dimensional (2D) SrRuO_{3} crystal with highly suppressed charge transfer. The tendency to ferromagnetically align the spins in an SrRuO_{3} layer diminishes in 2D as the interlayer exchange interaction vanishes, accompanying the 2D localization of electrons. Furthermore, electronic and magnetic instabilities in the two SrRuO_{3} unit cell layers induce a thermally driven MIT along with a metamagnetic transition.

The exact mechanism of cadmium (Cd) immobilization by oyster shell (OS) has not been reported. The effect of OS on Cd immobilization and the exact mechanism should be known before applying remediation technology using OS to Cd contaminated soils. Therefore, the objective of this study was to elucidate the mechanism of Cd immobilization by OS. Three grams of OS (< 0.84 mm) was reacted with 30 mL of 0-3.56 mg Cd L-1 solution at 25 °C for 48 h. Cadmium adsorption increased with increasing initial concentration of Cd in solution. The X-ray diffraction patterns clearly demonstrated that precipitation of CdCO3 did not take place in suspensions of OS after reacting with up to 3.56 mol Cd L-1. Interestingly, we found formation of Ca0.67Cd0.33CO3 crystalline in suspension of OS after reacting with maximum initial Cd concentrations. Precipitation and chemisorption might contribute to Cd immobilization together. However, we feel confident that chemisorption is the major mechanism by which Cd immobilization occurs with OS. In conclusion, OS could be an effective bioadsorbent to immobilize Cd through formation of geochemically stable Cd mineral.

The proliferation of pre-B cells is known to further increase the clonal diversity of B cells at the stage of pre-B cells by allowing the same rearranged heavy chains to combine with differently rearranged light chains in a subsequent developmental stage. Crlz-1 (charged amino acid-rich leucine zipper-1) was found to control this proliferation of pre-B cells by working as a Wnt (wingless-related mouse mammary tumor virus integration site) target gene in these cells. Mechanistically, Crlz-1 protein functioned by mobilizing cytoplasmic CBFß (core binding factor ß) into the nucleus to allow Runx (runt-related transcription factor)/CBFß heterodimerization. Runx/CBFß then turned on its target genes such as EBF (early B cell factor), VpreB, and λ5 and thereby pre-B cell receptor signaling, leading to the expression of cyclins D2 and D3 Actually, the proliferative function of Crlz-1 was demonstrated by not only Crlz-1 or ß-catenin knockdown but also Crlz-1 overexpression. Furthermore, the mechanistic view that the proliferative function of Crlz-1 is caused by relaying Wnt/ß-catenin to pre-B cell receptor signaling pathways through the regulation of Runx/CBFß heterodimerization was also verified by employing niclosamide, XAV939, and LiCl as Wnt inhibitors and activator, respectively.

Our previous studies have shown that DNase I hypersensitive sites 1 and 2 (HS1-2) and HS3-6 within the mouse Vκ-Jκ intervening region are essential for controlling locus contraction and creating a diverse Ab repertoire. In this article, we demonstrate that a 6.3-kb deletion encompassing HS1-6 altogether not only leads to the predictable sums of these phenotypes, but also results in a novel hyperelevation of transcription of proximal Vκ genes, in both pre-B and splenic B cells. These findings reveal previously unrecognized additional functions for cis-elements within the Vκ-Jκ intervening region, namely, prevention of the production of massive levels of noncoding RNA species by silencing transcription of germline proximal Vκ genes in both developing and mature B cells.

RESUMO

HKUST-1, a copper-based metal organic framework (MOF), has been investigated as a catalyst in various reactions. However, the HKUST-1 shows low catalytic activity in the oxidation of catechol. Therefore, we synthesized Fe3O4@HKUST-1 by layer-by layer assembly strategy and Cu@Cu2O by reduction of HKUST-1 for enhancement of catalytic activity. Cu@Cu2O nanoparticles exhibited highly effective catalytic activity in oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol. Through this method, MOF can maintain the original core-shell structure and be used in various other reactions with enhanced catalytic activity.

The processes of Ig gene locus contraction and looping during V(D)J-recombination are essential for creating a diverse Ab repertoire. However, no cis-acting sequence that plays a major role in specifying locus contraction has been uncovered within the Igκ gene locus. In this article, we demonstrate that a 650-bp sequence corresponding to DNase I hypersensitive sites HS1-2 within the mouse Igκ gene V-J intervening region binds CCCTC-binding factor and specifies locus contraction and long-range Vκ gene usage spanning 3.2 Mb in pre-B cells. We call this novel element Cer (for "contracting element for recombination"). Targeted deletion of Cer caused markedly increased proximal and greatly diminished upstream Vκ gene usage, higher allele usage, more splenic Igκ(+) B cells, and nonlineage-specific Igκ rearrangement in T cells. Relative to wild-type mice, Cer-deletion mice exhibited similar levels of Vκ gene germline transcription and H3K4me3 epigenetic marks but displayed a dramatic decrease in locus contraction in pre-B cells. Thus, our studies demonstrate that DNase I hypersensitive sites HS1-2 within the Vκ-Jκ intervening region are essential for controlling locus contraction and creating a diverse Ab repertoire.

Aluminum is one of the most widely used nonferrous metals and an important industrial material, especially for automotive coatings. However, potential toxicity caused by aluminum in humans limits the used of this metal. α-alumina is the most stable form of aluminum in various phases. Although the results of studies evaluating the dermal toxicity of α-alumina remained unclear, this compound can still be used as a pigment in cosmetics for humans. In the current study, we further evaluated the dermal cytotoxic effects of α-alumina on human skin cells and an in vivo mouse model. We also measured the in vitro penetration profile of flake-like α-alumina in porcine skin and assessed the degree of cellular metabolic disorders. Our findings demonstrated that treatment with flake-like α-alumina did not significantly affect cell viability up to 24 h. This compound was found to have a non-penetration profile based on a Franz modified diffusion cell assay. In addition, flake-like α-alumina was not found to induce dermal inflammation as assessed by histology of epidermal architecture, hyperplasia, and the expression of Interleukin-1ß and Cyclooxygenase-2. Results of the cellular metabolic disorder assay indicated that flake-like α-alumina does not exert a direct effect on human skin cells. Taken together, our findings provided not only evidence that flake-like α-alumina may serve as a pearlescent pigment in cosmetics but also experimental basis utilizing α-alumina for human application. Our results also obviously provide new insight of the further toxicity study to aluminum based nanoparticles for skin.

As hybrid nanostructures have become more important in many fields of chemistry, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are being increasingly immobilized onto Fe3O4 microspheres in situ. Structural characterization reveals that the Ag NPs are uniformly immobilized in the Fe3O4 microsphere-based supports. Moreover, Ag NPs are more stable in the hybrid structure than in the naked state and show high catalytic activity for the reduction of nitro compounds and hydration of nitriles to amides in water. The Fe3O4 microspheres were recycled several times using an external magnet.

Dopant-induced electron redistribution on transition metal-based materials has long been considered an emerging new electrocatalyst that is expected to replace noble-metal-based electrocatalysts in natural seawater electrolysis; however, their practical applications remain extremely daunting due to their sluggish kinetics in natural seawater. In this work, we developed a facile strategy to synthesize the 3D sponge-like hierarchical structure of Ru-doped NiCoFeP nanosheet arrays derived from metal-organic frameworks with remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in natural seawater. Based on experimental results and density functional theory calculations, Ru-doping-induced charge redistribution on the surface of metal active sites has been found, which can significantly enhance the HER activity. As a result, the 3D sponge-like hierarchical structure of Ru-NiCoFeP nanosheet arrays achieves low overpotentials of 52, 149, and 216 mV at 10, 100, and 500 mA cm-2 in freshwater alkaline, respectively. Notably, the electrocatalytic activity of the Ru-NiCoFeP electrocatalyst in simulated alkaline seawater and natural alkaline seawater is nearly the same as that in freshwater alkaline. This electrocatalyst exhibits superior catalytic properties with outstanding stability under a high current density of 85 mA cm-2 for more than 100 h in natural seawater, which outperforms state-of-the-art 20% Pt/C at high current density. Our work provides valuable guidelines for developing a low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalyst for natural seawater splitting.

In this work, rhodium nanoparticles were synthesized using hydrothermal method that is simple and easy to manipulate reaction and use nontoxic supercritical water. The rhodium nanoparticles were formed in uniform size and shape. These Rh NPs also acted as a efficient heterogenous catalyst in reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. Moreover, the rhodium nanoparticles can be recycled without any loss in catalytic activity, and showed highly catalytic activity for various nitroarenes. Therefore, this method will contribute greatly to the development of environmental field and be suitable for use in the industry.

Atomic-scale precision control of magnetic interactions facilitates a synthetic spin order useful for spintronics, including advanced memory and quantum logic devices. Conventional modulation of synthetic spin order has been limited to metallic heterostructures that exploit Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction through a nonmagnetic metallic spacer; however, they face issues arising from Joule heating and/or electric breakdown. The practical realization and observation of a synthetic spin order across a nonmagnetic insulating spacer will lead to the development of spin-related devices with a completely different concept. Herein, the atomic-scale modulation of the synthetic spiral spin order in oxide superlattices composed of ferromagnetic metal and nonmagnetic insulator layers is reported. The atomically controlled superlattice exhibits an oscillatory magnetic behavior, representing the existence of a spiral spin structure. Depth-sensitive polarized neutron reflectometry evidences modulated spiral spin structures as a function of the nonmagnetic insulator layer thickness. Atomic-scale customization of the spin state can move the field one step further to actual spintronic applications.

A novel one-pot surfactant-free synthesis is presented for designing bimetallic oxide-nitride electrocatalysts with tunable morphologies using metal salts and nitrogen-rich precursors. This innovative approach eliminates the need for a distinct nitridation process. Bifunctional electrode Co3O4/MoO3/MoxNy achieved a current density of 10 mA cm-2 while maintaining a cell voltage of 1.52 V, outperforming many bimetallic oxide-nitride catalysts in the scientific literature.

Background: In 2019, the International Agency for Research on Cancer re-evaluated the carcinogenicity of night-shift work and reported that there is limited evidence that night-shift work is carcinogenic for the development of prostate cancer. Therefore, in 2020 and 2021, the Korean Epidemiologic Investigation Evaluation Committee concluded that 2 cases of prostate cancer were occupational diseases related to the night-shift work. Here, we report the 2 cases of prostate cancer in night-shift workers which were first concluded as occupational diseases by the Korean Epidemiologic Investigation Evaluation Committee. Case presentation: Patient A: A 61-year-old man worked as a city bus driver for approximately 17 years, from 2002 to 2019, and was exposed to night-shift work during this period. In March 2017, the patient was diagnosed with high-grade prostate cancer through core-needle biopsy after experiencing stinging pain lasting for 2 months. Patient B: A 56-year-old man worked as an electrician and an automated equipment operator in a cement manufacturing plant for 35 years from 1976 to 2013 and was exposed to night-shift work during this period. In 2013, the patient was diagnosed with high-grade prostate cancer through core needle biopsy at a university hospital because of dysuria that lasted for 6 months. Conclusions: The 2 workers were diagnosed with high-grade prostate cancer after working night shifts for 17 and 35 years respectively. Additionally, previous studies have reported that high-grade prostate cancer has a stronger relationship with night-shift work than low or medium-grade prostate cancer. Therefore, the Korean Epidemiologic Investigation Evaluation Committee concluded that night-shift work in these 2 patients contributed to the development of their prostate cancer.
