RESUMO

ABSTRACT: In nursing academia, educators are faced with the longstanding challenge of bridging the theory-practice gap. In a second-year nursing theory course, students were introduced to poetry on a biweekly basis, written by their educator in response to student needs in understanding complex theoretical and conceptual nursing topics. Through anecdotal evidence from clinical instructors and students, the sharing of poetry and subsequent discussions helped students to develop and enhance their critical thinking and clinical judgment, reasoning, and decision-making skills. This transformative pedagogical approach offers an alternative teaching strategy that can provide the basis for meaningful discussion and bridge the theory-practice gap.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, the healthcare experiences and needs of Muslim women who wear Islamic head coverings are conflated with the larger Muslim community who do not wear Islamic head coverings. Understanding their specific and unique preferences and challenges is essential for tailoring care and improving healthcare encounters. PURPOSE: The study purpose is to explore the healthcare encounters of Muslim women wearing Islamic head coverings in Canada, focusing on how discourse influences their narratives. METHODS: A postructuralist narrative methodology was used to understand how power, knowledge, language, and discourse impacted their experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight Muslim women. Narrative analysis was used to dissect stories and the way these stories were told. RESULTS: Five themes were identified, including: The Fingerprint: Highlights the importance of recognizing individual identities to provide personalized care.The Membrane: Examines how societal biases and assumptions permeate healthcare professionals and impacts care.The Heartbeat: Reveals the immediate emotional and physical responses that reflect systemic challenges within healthcare encounters.Unseen: Emphasizes the lack of acknowledgement experienced by Muslim women related to their healthcare preferences and/or needs.Heard: Encompasses instances where Muslim women feel recognized by their healthcare provider; contrasts Theme #4. CONCLUSION: This research emphasizes the diverse experiences of Muslim woman who wear an Islamic head covering and the need for healthcare professionals to move away from a one-size-fits-all approach and instead, provide care that respects the unique preferences amongst this diverse group.

Patient-partners are invaluable in health professions' education. Sharing their lived experiences with prospective and current healthcare providers can provide an opportunity for these participants to hone their patient-centric skills. However, sharing stories publicly is a vulnerable role and may feel emotionally risky for patient-partners. Using reflective dialogue, this manuscript outlines recommendations through the Sender-Receiver Model of Communication for Patient-Partners encounters when working with patient-partners in health professions' education. These recommendations include recognizing that: Patient-partners need to consider if they are ready to share their story. Some stories are wounds requiring further healing; other stories are scars fully processed by patient-partners and ready to be shared publicly.The audience should differentiate between questions that can promote critical thinking versus feel like a "personal attack." Audiences should recognize vulnerability patient-partners may experience in sharing their stories and engage accordingly.Pre-session and post-session debriefs are important. Shared stories may elicit intense emotions from patient-partners and audiences. Both groups should be given an opportunity to process and work through emotions.

A numerical simulation of aerosol particle deposition in a horizontal circular pipe with a corrugated wall under turbulent flow has been carried out in this research. This paper uses the RNG k-ε turbulence model with Enhanced Wall Treatment to simulate fluid flow. Furthermore, the Lagrangian particle tracking model simulates particle deposition in the corrugated pipe. Air-particle interaction is influenced by Stokes number, surface roughness, flow velocity, particle diameter, and pipe diameter. For the parametric simulation, particle diameter varies from 1 to 30 µm, whereas the Reynolds number ranges from 5000 to 10,000. The effect of corrugation height and pipe diameter on deposition efficiency is also investigated. This study shows that corrugation height significantly increases particle deposition compared to the smooth wall pipe. As the pipe diameter decreases, keeping the corrugation ratio constant, deposition efficiency also increases. Moreover, high flow velocity enhances deposition efficiency for particle diameters lower than 5 µm.

BACKGROUND: This paper relies on data from the multilevel, sectoral discussions held among professional nursing and sociology individuals. PURPOSE: To present the outcomes of a reflective process on racism in nursing education and practice in the cities of Toronto and Paris. METHOD: The method used was a reflection on research conducted by eight individuals dealing with racism at distinct stages of their professional career. The reflections are organized as a systematic description of facts, noted feelings, appraisal of issues, analysis of learned lessons, and lead to recommendations for nursing education and practice. RESULTS: The promotion of social justice and social inclusion has become a matter of nursing practice, yet a lack of critical discussion about racism with racialized students may result in feelings of being silenced. Increased awareness of racial negligence within a clinical setting can instigate change and allow nursing professionals to advocate for more culturally-sensitive care for a multicultural clientele. Insight from nurses with different professional status and from different racial backgrounds will garner an understanding of how the experiences of racism are in some ways individualized. CONCLUSION: A collective reflection is required to understand the factors that underpin racism in nursing and can be used to elicit dialogue on a national and international scale in order to address racism in global nursing.
