RESUMO

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many Iranian people have been taking 50 000 IU of vitamin D3 on weekly or biweekly bases in order to enhance their immune system function. This cross-sectional study was conducted on the patients of endocrinology clinic to compare 25(OH)D levels of weekly or biweekly consumption with the monthly users of vitamin D3 50 000 IU. The level >100 ng/mL of 25(OH)D was defined as hypervitaminosis D. In total, 211 patients (108 and 103 patients in monthly and weekly/biweekly groups, respectively) were studied. In the subgroups of weekly and biweekly users, the rates of hypervitaminosis were 18.9% and 4.5%, respectively. In contrast, only 0.9% of monthly users had hypervitaminosis D. The highest vitamin D value of 185 ng/mL was detected in a patient who had consumed 50 000 IU vitamin D3 weekly for 6 years. No hypercalcaemia was detected in patients with hypervitaminosis D.

RESUMO

A cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 241 patients with breast cancer was conducted to investigate death depression and its explanatory factors in Iranian women who were diagnosed and undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Patients with significantly higher death depression were those who were housewives (ß = 0.6, p = 0.016), unskilled workers (ß = 15.8, p = 0.002), and retired (ß = 13.1, p = 0.002) as compared with those who were professionally employed with higher socio-economic status (ß = 17.4, p = 0.002); and those receiving combination therapy as compared to surgery only (ß = 6.3, p = 0.02). For patients with higher spiritual health scores, death depression was significantly lower (ß = -0.2, p < 0.001).

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of silymarin (Livergol) on liver enzymes in patients taking isotretinoin (Roaccutane). In this double-blind clinical trial, 74 patients with acne and taking isotretinoin were randomly assigned into intervention (N = 37) and control (N = 37) groups. The intervention group received a 140 mg Livergol capsule per day for 30 days. The control group received a starch-containing capsule as a placebo once a day for 30 days. Liver enzyme levels were measured before and after the intervention. The data were analyzed using chi-square test, Independent t test, paired sample t test and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The results showed no statistically significant difference between the intervention and control groups at the beginning of study in levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (p > .05). At the end of the study, a statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups in levels of AST and ALT (p < .05). Livergol prevented liver enzymes from increasing, so it can be used as an effective, low-cost, and low-complication treatment for the problem of increased levels of liver enzymes following the use of isotretinoin.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation is a preferred treatment for many patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and is far more profitable than hemodialysis. Analyzing renal transplantation data can help to evaluate the effectiveness of transplantation interventions. The aim of this study was to determine the organ survival rate after kidney transplantation during a period of 10 years (March 2001-March 2011) among transplanted patients in Arak, Markazi Province, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this historical cohort study, all recipients of kidney transplantation from Arak, Markazi Province, Iran who had medical records in Valiasr Hospital and "charity for kidney patients" of Arak, Markazi Province, Iran during a period of 10 years from March 2001 to March 2011 were included. Data collected by using checklists were completed from patients' hospital records. Kaplan-Meier method was used to determine the graft cumulative survival rate, log-rank test to compare survival curves in subgroups, and Cox regression model to define the hazard ratio and for ruling out the intervening factors. Statistical analysis was conducted by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 20 and Stata 11. RESULTS: Mean duration of follow-up was 55.43 ± 42.02 months. By using the Kaplan-Meier method, the cumulative probability of graft survival at 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 years was 99.1, 97.7, 94.3, 85.7, and 62.1%, respectively. The number of dialysis by controlling the effect of other variables had a significant association with the risk of graft failure [hazard ratios and 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.47 (1.02-2.13)]. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the graft survival rate was satisfactory in this community and was similar to the results of single-center studies in the world. Dialysis time after transplantation was a significant predictor of survival in the recipients of kidney transplantation that should be considered.

RESUMO

Objectives: Understanding the shape and size of the sella turcica may help predict future orthodontic treatment needs related to skeletal malocclusion. This study aims to assess different morphological types of the sella turcica in lateral cephalometric radiographs and its correlation with malocclusion, as well as the relationship between gender and linear measurements of sella turcica. Materials and Methods: The lateral cephalometric radiographs of 410 volunteers (111 men and 299 women) aged 8 to 30 years were evaluated. The patients were divided into three groups based on their skeletal growth patterns (cl I, II, and III). Then the anatomical shape and linear dimensions of sella turcica were assessed. Measurements were made using Adobe Photoshop Version: 20.0.0 software, and data analysis was performed by IBM SPSS Statistics version 25. Results: The following morphologies were observed: normal (37.8%), oblique anterior wall (9.3%), double contour of the floor (21.5%), sella turcica bridge (8.8%), irregularity (notching) in the posterior part of sella turcica (16.6%), and pyramidal shape of the dorsum sellae (6.1%). No statistically significant relationship was found between sella turcica variations and skeletal malocclusion. The correlation between female sex with the diameter (p=0.027) and depth values (p=0.035) of sella turcica was statistically significant. There was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) in length based on gender. Conclusion: The most morphological type reported was normal sella turcica (37.8%). Anatomical variations of sella turcica had no association with malocclusion. The most considerable depth and diameter of sella turcica were found in women.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess the relationship between skeletal malocclusion and radiomorphometric indices of the mandible in long face patients. This cross-sectional study evaluated 174 lateral cephalograms and panoramic radiographs of long face patients between the ages of 17 and 30 presenting at the Orthodontics Department of Qazvin Dental School. The gonial angle, antegonial angle, type of antegonial notch, and depth of antegonial notch were measured bilaterally on panoramic radiographs. The correlation between the radiomorphometric parameters and the type of occlusion was analyzed using one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Chi-square test, and Fisher's exact test (alpha = 0.05). The mean size of gonial angle was significantly different among the three classes of occlusion (p = 0.046), while the difference was not significant regarding the antegonial angle size and antegonial notch depth (p > 0.05). An independent t-test showed that the mean sizes of gonial angle (p = 0.026) and antegonial angle (p = 0.036), and the antegonial notch depth (p = 0.046) in males, were significantly greater than the values in females. According to the Chi-square and Fisher's exact test, the right antegonial notch type was significantly different among the three classes of malocclusion (p = 0.006), while this difference was not significant in the left side (p = 0.318). The right antegonial notch type II was more common in males, while the right antegonial notch type I was more common in females (p = 0.014). According to the results, the indices of gonial angle and type of antegonial notch can be clinically useful for predicting the growth rate of the mandible and designing the appropriate treatment in long face patients.

RESUMO

Background: Polylactic-co-glycolic acid and zinc oxide (PLGA-ZnO) nanocomposite has been investigated for its antibacterial properties, which could be beneficial for adding to wound dressings after periodontal surgery. However, its cytotoxicity against human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) remains unclear and should be evaluated. Methods: ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized using the hydrothermal method. These metallic nanoparticles were incorporated into the PLGA matrix by the solvent/non-solvent process. The nanomaterial was evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. HGF cells were acquired from the National Cell Bank and categorized into four groups: ZnO, PLGA, ZnO-PLGA, and control. The cells were exposed to different ZnO (1, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 µg/mL) and PLGA (0.2, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 µg/mL) concentrations for 24 and 48 hours. The cytotoxicity was tested using the MTT assay. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25, and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: ZnO nanoparticles exhibited significant toxicity at≥40 µg/mL concentrations after 24 hours. Cell viability decreased significantly at all the tested concentrations after 48 hours of exposure. PLGA-ZnO cell viability in 24 hours was similar to the control group for all the concentrations up to 80 µg/mL. Conclusion: ZnO nanoparticles could be toxic against HGF in high concentrations and with prolonged exposure. Therefore, incorporating ZnO nanoparticles into a biocompatible polymer such as PLGA could be a beneficial strategy for reducing their toxicity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although the burden of anemia in pregnant women and its consequences on the pregnancy outcome are well documented, there is limited evidence on the association between maternal hemoglobin concentration and low birth weight (LBW) in the study area. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the association between maternal hemoglobin concentration and neonatal birth weight (BW) in Qazvin, Iran, 2018-2019. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted among 450 neonates with BW < 2500 gm (LBW) and 451 neonates with BW > 2500 gm. In this study, neonates with BW less than 2500 gm were cases, while those who were greater than 2500 gm were considered as control. Multiple logistic regression model was used to calculate OR with 95% Confidence Interval (95 % CI) to determine the association between maternal anemia and other maternal attributes and neonate BW. RESULTS: Maternal hemoglobin (g/dl) was not significantly associated with neonate BW (OR: 1.03 (95 % CI: 0.58 - 1.81), p = 0.93). However, maternal initial weight (Kg) (OR: 0.96 (95 % CI: 0.94 - .098), p < 0.001), mother's age in year (OR: 1.04 (95 % CI: 1.00 - 1.09), p = 0.038), gestational age (OR: 0.49 (95 % CI: 0.43 - 0.57), p < 0.001) were significantly associated with neonatal BW. CONCLUSION: Maternal hemoglobin concentration was not significantly associated with LBW. However, other maternal attributes such as low initial maternal weight, low gestational age, low education status and old age were significantly associated with LBW. Intervention that targeted mothers with low initial weight, low educational status and older age is required to minimize LBW among neonates in the study area.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess the relationship of the morphology and size of the sella turcica (ST) with dental anomalies and skeletal malocclusions. This cross-sectional study was conducted on records of fixed orthodontic patients treated between 2013 and 2022. Cephalometric analysis was performed to determine the anteroposterior and vertical skeletal patterns. Preoperative panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms, intraoral photographs, and primary dental casts of patients were used to detect dental anomalies. Gender, sagittal and vertical skeletal patterns, dental anomalies, and dimensions (length, depth, and diameter), and morphology of the ST were all recorded according to the lateral cephalograms of patients. Data were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way and two-way ANOVA, Chi-square test, and log rank test (alpha = 0.05). The depth and diameter of the ST had no significant correlation with gender (p > 0.05); however, the length of the ST was significantly longer in males than females (p < 0.05). The morphology of the ST had a significant correlation with gender (p < 0.05). The ST morphology had a significant correlation with the anteroposterior skeletal pattern, microdontia, and tooth impaction as well (p < 0.05). The present results revealed a significant correlation of the ST morphology with the anteroposterior skeletal pattern, microdontia, and tooth impaction.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between temperature and air pollution, and preterm birth in Tehran, Iran. METHODS: In this time series study, the daily data of preterm births, air pollution, and maximum, minimum and mean temperature from March 2015 to March 2018 were used. To evaluate the effect of air pollution and temperature with and without adjustment of their mutual effects on preterm birth in lags (days) 0-21, the Distributed Lag Non-linear Models (DLNM) was used. The relative risk (RR) was estimated for extreme, moderate and mild heat (99th, 95th, 75th percentile) and cold (1st, 5th, 25th percentile) compared with the median, and for each 10-unit increase in PM2.5, NO2, and O3, 5-unit increase in SO2, and 1-unit increase in CO. RESULTS: The highest RR was seen in extreme (26.9 °C) and moderate (24.8 °C) heat of minimum temperature on lag 0 (RR = 1.17; 1.05-1.31, Adjusted RR = 1.16; 1.04-1.29, RR = 1.15; 1.05-1.26, Adjusted RR = 1.14; 1.03-1.25, respectively). In regard of cold, the only significant effect was for maximum temperature on lags 7-9 (RR = 1.02; 1.00-1.04). Each 10-unit increase in PM2.5 in Lag 0 (RR = 1.008; 1.001-1.014) and lag 1 (RR = 1.004; 1.001-1.007) and in NO2 in lag 0 (RR = 1.006; 1.000-1.012) had significant effects. CONCLUSION: Maternal exposure to a minimum daily temperature of 26.9 and 24.8 °C compared to 13.2 °C increased the risk of preterm birth by 17 and 15% on the same day, respectively. This risk increased by 0.8 and 0.6%, on the same day for each 10-unit increase in PM2.5 and NO2, respectively.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis study aimed to estimate the overall prevalence of Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in neonates with jaundice who were admitted to hospitals in Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched PubMed/Medline, Scopus, ISI Web of Sciences, and Iranian Local databases up to December 2019.We calculated Prevalence and 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) of G6PD deficiency as summary measures. We conducted subgroup analysis based on the sex and quality of studies, while meta-regression were applied for investigating the effect of years of studies and years of publication on the pooled prevalence. We applied sensitivity analysis to investigate the effect of excluding each study on the pooled prevalence estimation. RESULTS: The total sample size was 9799 people. The pooled prevalence of G6PD deficiency among neonates with jaundice in Iran was 7.0% (95% CI: 5.5-8.5%). The results of subgroup analysis showed that, pooled prevalence of G6PD deficiency among male neonate (12.1%, 95%CI: 7.6-16.7%) was more prevalent that female (3.00%, 95%CI: 1.1-4.9%). Based on the sensitivity analysis, lower and higher pooled prevalence of G6PD deficiency was observed 5.8% (95%CI: 4.7-6.9%) and 7.3% (95%CI: 5.7-8.8%) respectively by excluding each study. CONCLUSION: The overall prevalence of G6PD deficiency was 7% in Iranian neonates with Jaundice. Prevalence was high in male and early hours of life. We recommend screening test for G6PD deficiency in neonates to prevent its complications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Unpleasant experiences of dysmenorrhea can lead to increased anxiety. The anxiety associated with dysmenorrhea is a pain-related anxiety which might reduce the efficacy of medication as well as enhance the perception of pain. The present study evaluated the efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) in reducing anxiety among female university students with primary dysmenorrhea. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 88 female university students were recruited from April 2019 to February 2020. Eligible participants were selected by convenience sampling and were allocated into study groups (44 individuals in the intervention group and comparison group) using balanced block randomization. The final sample comprised 78 participants who completed the study (39 individuals in each group). Data were collected using the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Subjective Units of Distress Scale, and Validity of Cognition Scale before the intervention and at the time of the first menstrual period after completion of the intervention. The intervention group received EMDR in two individual interventional sessions which lasted approximately one hour. Data analysis was performed using analysis of variance with control of covariance method at a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: The results of the study showed that EMDR did not have a statistically significant effect on State-Trait Anxiety of patients with dysmenorrhea (p > 0.05). Based on the Cohen's d effect size of 0.06 for state-anxiety, -0.01 for trait-anxiety, and partial eta square less than 0.059 for both uncorrected and corrected models, the intervention was within a trivial effect. CONCLUSION: EMDR intervention did not have a statistically and clinically significant effect on State-Trait Anxiety of patients with dysmenorrhea. Therefore, the efficacy of EMDR in treating dysmenorrhea-related anxiety remains inconclusive. Trial registration IRCT20180823040851N2 on 2019-02-09.

RESUMO

The pattern of expansion of endodontic lesions in the jaws has been less commonly addressed in the literature. For this reason, the aim of this study is to assess the pattern of endodontic lesions of maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). This cross-sectional study was conducted on 317 endodontic lesions of posterior teeth on CBCT scans retrieved from a radiology center in Qazvin, Iran, from 2020 to 2022. Endodontic lesions were assessed on sagittal, coronal, and axial sections by an endodontist and dental student using the Romexis software. The largest lesion diameter was measured occluso-apically, mesiodistally, and buccolingually. Lesion size was analyzed based on age, gender, jaw, tooth type, and presence/absence of root filling by independent samples t-tests and a one-way Analysis Of Variannce (ANOVA). The largest diameter of lesions in the maxilla and mandible was recorded in the occluso-apical dimension followed by buccolingual and mesiodistal dimensions (p > 0.05). The pattern of lesions was the same in teeth with and without endodontic treatment, but it was significantly different in maxillary and mandibular endodontically treated teeth in the occluso-apical and buccolingual dimensions (p < 0.05). No significant correlation was noted with tooth type or jaw except for maxillary and mandibular first molar lesions, which were significantly different in the occluso-apical dimension (p < 0.05). Lesion size in all three dimensions was significantly greater in males than females (p < 0.05), and was the highest in the occluso-apical dimension in both genders. In the maxilla, the mean lesion size significantly decreased in the mesiodistal dimension with age (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the largest lesion diameter in the maxilla and mandible was found in the occluso-apical dimension, indicating the role of bone density in the pattern of lesions.

RESUMO

Background: Hypocalcemia is highly prevalent in Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). There is limited evidence about the course and roles of different parameters in the occurrence of new or worsening hypocalcemia. Objectives: This prospective longitudinal study was conducted on hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Qazvin, Iran, in 2021. Methods: Serum levels of calcium, albumin, parathormone (PTH), 25(OH)D (vitamin D), magnesium, and phosphate were assessed on the first day (time one), as well as fourth to sixth days (time two) of hospitalization. Paired t-test, McNemar's test, and multivariate logistic regression test were used to compare data at two times and evaluating the independent roles of different variables in the occurrence or worsening of hypocalcemia. Results: Out of a total of 123 participants, 102 patients completed the study. The mean serum calcium level significantly decreased from 8.32 ± 0.52 mg/dL to 8.02 ± 0.55 mg/dL at time two compared to time one (P < 0.001). Also, we witnessed new or worsening hypocalcemia at time two in 44 (55%) patients with normal serum calcium or mild hypocalcemia at time one (P < 0.001). The PTH level decreased from 42.17 ± 27.20 pg/mL to 31.28 ± 23.42 pg/mL (P < 0.001). The decrease in albumin and PTH levels was an independent significant factor in the occurrence or worsening of hypocalcemia at time two (OR = 1.27; 95% CI: 1.10 - 1.46; P = 0.001 for each 1 g/L decrement in albumin and OR = 1.29; 95% CI: 1.03 - 1.62; P = 0.026 for each 10 pg/mL decrement in PTH). Vitamin D deficiency or changes during hospitalization did not have a significant role in new or worsening hypocalcemia. Conclusions: Decreased PTH secretion and hypoalbuminemia have significant roles in the occurrence of new or worsening hypocalcemia during hospitalization due to COVID-19.

RESUMO

The global issue of preventing the spread of COVID-19 is challenging. One of the most efficient ways to control the pandemic is to have a full coverage of COVID-19 vaccination. Therefore, this paper collected survey data to understand the intention and willingness of COVID-19 vaccination uptake in Qazvin, Iran. With the use of a paper-and-pencil method and multistage stratified cluster sampling, research personnel approached and interviewed a representative sample of adults in Qazvin (n = 10843) between February 19 and April 9, 2021. The survey asked questions regarding sociodemographic information, fear of COVID-19, perceived COVID-19 infectability, perceived behavioral control over COVID-19 vaccination, subjective norm of COVID-19 vaccination, attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination, and intention to get COVID-19 vaccinated. The data collected from this survey were analyzed using descriptive statistics, which were carried out using the IBM SPSS version 17.0.

RESUMO

One of the most efficient methods to control the high infection rate of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is to have a high coverage of COVID-19 vaccination worldwide. Therefore, it is important to understand individuals' intention to get COVID-19 vaccinated. The present study applied the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to explain the intention to get COVID-19 vaccinated among a representative sample in Qazvin, Iran. The TPB uses psychological constructs of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control to explain an individual's intention to perform a behavior. Fear and perceived infectability were additionally incorporated into the TPB to explain the intention to get COVID-19 vaccinated. Utilizing multistage stratified cluster sampling, 10,843 participants (4092 males; 37.7%) with a mean age of 35.54 years (SD = 12.00) completed a survey. The survey assessed TPB constructs (including attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and intention related to COVID-19 vaccination) together with fear of COVID-19 and perceived COVID-19 infectability. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was performed to examine whether fear of COVID-19, perceived infectability, and the TPB constructs explained individuals' intention to get COVID-19 vaccinated. The SEM demonstrated satisfactory fit (comparative fit index = 0.970; Tucker-Lewis index = 0.962; root mean square error of approximation = 0.040; standardized root mean square residual = 0.050). Moreover, perceived behavioral control, subjective norm, attitude, and perceived COVID-19 infectability significantly explained individuals' intention to get COVID-19 vaccinated. Perceived COVID-19 infectability and TPB constructs were all significant mediators in the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and intention to get COVID-19 vaccinated. Incorporating fear of COVID-19 and perceived COVID-19 infectability effectively into the TPB explained Iranians' intention to get COVID-19 vaccinated. Therefore, Iranians who have a strong belief in Muslim religion may improve their intention to get COVID-19 vaccinated via these constructs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the effect of ambient air pollution and temperature on stillbirth in Tehran. METHODS: In this time-series study, the effect of O3 (ppb), CO (ppm), NO2 (ppb), SO2 (ppb), PM2.5 (µg/m3), and minimum, maximum, and mean daily temperature (°C) on stillbirth was evaluated in Tehran, Iran between March 2015 and March 2018. Using a quasi-Poisson regression model in combination with a Distributed Lag Non-linear Models (DLNM), the Relative Risk (RR) was estimated through comparing the high temperature (99th, 95th, and 75th percentiles) and low temperature (1st, 5th, and 25th percentiles) with the median. The effect of air pollution was estimated for each 1-, 5-, or 10-unit increase in the concentration during lags (days) 0-21. RESULTS: Among air pollutants, only a 5-ppm increase in the SO2 concentration in lag 0 increased the risk of stillbirth significantly (RR = 1.062; 1.002-1.125). The largest effect of heat was observed while comparing the 99th percentile of minimum daily temperature (26.9 °C) with the median temperature (13.2 °C), which was not statistically significant (RR = 1.25; 0.95-1.65). As for cold, a non-significant protective effect was observed while comparing the 1st percentile of maximum daily temperature (3.1 °C) with the median temperature (23.2 °C) (RR = 0.92; 0.72-1.19). CONCLUSION: Each 5-ppm increase in the mean daily SO2 in lag 0 increased the risk of stillbirth by 6% while other air pollutants had no significant effects on stillbirth. In lags 0 and 1, the heat increased the risk of stillbirth while the cold had protective effects, which were not statistically significant.

RESUMO

Super luminescent Diode (SLD) with a new structure is proposed in which light is guided by surface plasmon waveguide (SPWG) rather than by the conventional dielectric waveguide. This results in a great increase of the spontaneous emission coupling. Other parameters important to the device operation such as the confinement factor, waveguide loss and waveguide facets reflectivities are also considered. It is shown that the new design outperforms the conventional ones using dielectric waveguides in both the output power and optical spectral width.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: One of the adjuvant and desirable therapies is skin contact between mother and baby or Kangaroo mother care (KMC) that is a cheap, accessible, relaxing, noninvasive and easy method. This study aimed to compare the effect of conventional phototherapy method and phototherapy along with KMC on cutaneous bilirubin in neonates with physiological jaundice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized clinical trial, all infants with physiological jaundice who referred for phototherapy to Mofid Hospital of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran were selected by convenience sampling based on inclusion criteria and were randomly assigned into two groups of conventional phototherapy (n = 35) and phototherapy along with KMC (n = 35). RESULTS: The results showed that there was a significant difference in the average volume of skin bilirubin before treatment with cutaneous bilirubin every 24 h after treatment (p < .001). This significant difference was present in both intervention and control groups. Although the average volume of skin bilirubin every 24 h after treatment was lower in the intervention group than the control group, this difference was not statistically significant (p = .236). Mean duration of hospitalization of infants in the intervention group was significantly lower than the control group (2.09 versus 3.03 d, p < .001). CONCLUSION: Although KMC along with phototherapy has a favorable effect on the reduction of cutaneous bilirubin in neonates with physiological jaundice, there are not significant differences in routine care. This may need to do KMC for a longer time (more than 1 h) which must be surveyed in the future studies. KMC was effective in reduction of the duration of hospitalization in jaundiced infants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is relatively a common complication in pregnancy and is characterized by high blood pressure and protein in urine during pregnancy. Consistent with the adverse outcomes followed by preeclampsia, this study designed to investigate the how preeclampsia is associated with preterm, low birth weight (LBW), cesarean section, and weigh gain during pregnancy. METHODS: In this population-based cross-sectional study, 5166 deliveries from 103 hospitals in Tehran (Capital of Iran) were included in the analysis in 2015. The independent variable was preeclampsia during pregnancy and weight gain during pregnancy, preterm birth, cesarean section, and LBW were considered as interested outcomes. The data were analyzed by statistical Stata software (version 13, Stata Inc., College Station, TX). RESULTS: Adjusted results showed that the mean of weight gain in women with preeclampsia was significantly higher than women without preeclampsia (mean difference: 1.77 kg, 95%CI: 0.76-12.78, p = .001). The adjusted odds ratio for preterm birth, cesarean section, and LBW were 4.19 (95%CI: 2.71-6.48, p = .001), 1.92 (95%CI: 1.24-2.98, p = .003), and 1.19 (95%CI: 0.61-2.31, p = .599), respectively. CONCLUSION: Weight gain in women with preeclampsia was higher than women without preeclampsia and also the odds of preterm birth, cesarean section and LBW in women with preeclampsia was higher than women without preeclampsia.
