RESUMO

In this work, three models based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) were developed to describe the behavior for the inhibition corrosion of bronze in 3.5% NaCl + 0.1 M Na2SO4, using the experimental data of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The database was divided into training, validation, and test sets randomly. The parameters process used as the inputs of the ANN models were frequency, temperature, and inhibitor concentration. The outputs for each ANN model and the components in the EIS spectrum (Zre, Zim, and Zmod) were predicted. The transfer functions used for the learning process were the hyperbolic tangent sigmoid in the hidden layer and linear in the output layer, while the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was applied to determine the optimum values of the weights and biases. The statistical analysis of the results revealed that ANN models for Zre, Zim, and Zmod can successfully predict the inhibition corrosion behavior of bronze in different conditions, where what was considered included variability in temperature, frequency, and inhibitor concentration. In addition, these three input parameters were keys to describe the behavior according to a sensitivity analysis.

In 2017, a major outbreak of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection took place in Chincha Province, Peru, where arboviral circulation had never been reported before. We conducted a cross-sectional survey (March-May 2019) in two districts of Chincha Province: Pueblo Nuevo and Chincha Baja. We included residents who were 20 to 40 years old and who had lived in these districts for at least 1 year. Serological testing combined screening with a commercial NS1 protein-based Zika IgG ELISA, and confirmation by a cytopathic effect-based virus neutralization test (VNT). Prevalence ratios (PRs) were calculated using Poisson regression with robust error variance. Four hundred participants, divided equally among districts, were enrolled. Anti-ZIKV IgG ELISA was positive for 42 participants (10.5%) and borderline for 12 (3%). Fifty-two of these 54 samples were confirmed positive by ZIKV VNT (13% of the total population). The Pueblo Nuevo district exhibited a greater ZIKV seroprevalence based on VNT results than the Chincha Baja district (23.5% versus 2.5%), with participants from the Pueblo Nuevo district being 9.4 times more likely to have a positive ZIKV VNT result. Average monthly income greater than the minimum wage and adequate water storage were found to be protective factors (PR, 0.29 and 0.24, respectively). In multivariate analysis, living in the Pueblo Nuevo district and a personal history of fever and rash were strong predictors of ZIKV positivity by VNT. The low ZIKV seroprevalence should prompt health authorities to stimulate interventions to prevent potential future outbreaks. In the Pueblo Nuevo district, the seroprevalence was greater but presumably not sufficient to ensure protective herd immunity.

Background: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a prevalent communicable disease in low- and middle-income countries, where non-communicable diseases like skin cancer are on the rise. However, the study of multi-morbidity or co-morbidity between communicable and non-communicable diseases is limited, and even null for some tropical or neglected diseases. Nevertheless, looking at these conditions together instead of as isolated entities in places where these illnesses exist, could show new prevention and treatment paths. We aimed to summarize and critically appraise the epidemiological evidence on the association between cutaneous leishmaniasis and skin cancer. Methods: Following the PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review using five search engines (Embase, Medline, Global Health, Scopus and Web of Science). We sought observational studies in which the outcome was skin cancer whilst the exposure was cutaneous leishmaniasis; these conditions should have had laboratory or pathology confirmation. Results: No epidemiological investigations have studied the association between cutaneous leishmaniasis and skin cancer. Most of the evidence about the association of interest is still based on case reports and other clinical observations rather than strong epidemiological observational studies. Conclusions: Research is much needed to verify the repeatedly clinical observation that cutaneous leishmaniasis may be a risk factor for skin cancer. This evidence could inform and guide early diagnosis or prevention of skin cancer in survivors of cutaneous leishmaniasis or where cutaneous leishmaniasis is still highly prevalent. BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a worldwide prevalent zoonosis and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading global disease burden. Because of pathophysiological changes in the kidney, it has been suggested that these conditions may be associated. However, the extent of this interaction has not been synthetized. We aimed to systematically review and critically appraise the evidence on the association between leptospirosis and CKD. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Observational studies with a control group were selected. Leptospirosis, confirmed with laboratory methods, and CKD also based on a laboratory assessment, were the exposures and outcomes of interest. The search was conducted in EMBASE, MEDLINE, Global Health, Scopus and Web of Science. Studies selected for qualitative synthesis were assessed for risk of bias following the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. 5,981 reports were screened, and 2 (n = 3,534) were included for qualitative synthesis. The studies were conducted in Taiwan and Nicaragua; these reported cross-sectional and longitudinal estimates. In the general population, the mean estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was lower (p<0.001) in people testing positive for antileptospira antibodies (eGFR = 98.3) than in negative controls (eGFR = 100.8). Among sugarcane applicants with high creatinine, those who were seropositive had lower eGFR (mean difference: -10.08). In a prospective analysis, people with high antileptospira antibodies titer at baseline and follow-up, had worse eGFR (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Although the available evidence suggests there may be a positive association between leptospirosis and CKD, whereby leptospirosis could be a risk factor for CKD, it is still premature to draw conclusions. There is an urgent need for research on this association.

The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of nanometer-sized conjugated molecules of 5-X-naphthylethynyl (X= NO(2), NMe(2)) units with precise length and constitution have been carried out. A new extended pi-conjugated 5-nitronaphthyl family was synthesized by palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction between the protected 5-iodonaphthylethynyl 5a and 1-ethynyl-5-nitronaphthalene 9, or the resulting ethynyl compound 11 and the 1-iodo-5-nitronaphthalene 3. Catalytic oxidative dimerization of the terminal acetylene compounds permits the isolation of the corresponding 1,3-butadiyne derivatives 16-18, with the nitro groups at the ends of the conjugation, in excellent yields. A new family of conjugated 5-nitro-(naphthylethynyl)-[5-(N,N-dimethylamino)]naphthalene (20-22), was also synthesized by palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction between 5-iodo-N,N-dimethylnaphthalene-1-amine (19) with the appropriate terminal acetylene (9, 11, and13 respectively). Compounds 20-22 show a fluorescence emission and also exhibit a charge-transfer absorption in the visible spectrum. X-ray structure of 20 confirms a centrosymmetric dimer association with an interplanar distance of 3.43 A, and the naphthalene rings adopt an anti conformation around the Ctbd1;C triple bond.

Nanometer-sized conjugated 1,4- and 1,3,5-ethynylphenyl oligomers were synthesized starting from 3,5-di(trimethylsilylethynyl)phenylacetylene and p-[3,5-di(trimethylsilylethynyl)-1-ethynylphenyl]phenyl acetylene by cross-coupling reaction with a convenient haloaryl derivative, catalyzed by palladium(II)/copper(I), in excellent yield. The terminal acetylenes were efficiently prepared by a specific protection-deprotection methodology. All ethynylphenyl homologues obtained show fluorescence emission, with the bathochromic shift of approximately 20 nm by each ethynylphenyl unit increasing the conjugate chain. Parallel conjugated ethynylphenyl chains were prepared through the insertion of a 1,5-naphthalene subunit, and the compounds exhibit fluorescence radiation emission.
