BACKGROUND: Calcific mitral stenosis (calcific MS) presents a challenge for surgical treatment and is a contraindication for most contemporary transcatheter mitral valve replacement devices (TMVR), rendering patients with very limited therapeutic options. AIMS: This study aims to assess the clinical and hemodynamic follow-up after mitral valve lithotripsy (MVL). METHODS: All consecutive patients who underwent MVL to treat symptomatic calcific MS at St Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Canada, were included. Patients were deemed unsuitable for mitral surgery or TMVR after heart team assessment. Patients with rheumatic MS or ≥moderate mitral regurgitation (MR) were excluded. The primary endpoint was a reduction in the invasive mitral gradient by ≥50% without significant (≥moderate) MR. RESULTS: Fifteen patients underwent MVL between 2021 and 2023 with a mean age of 74 ± 9 years; 53% were female, with a mean STS score of 10% ± 0.1%. Following MVL, there was a reduction in the invasively measured mean trans-mitral gradient compared to baseline (14 mmHg vs. 6 mmHg; p < 0.05). The primary endpoint was achieved in 8 patients (53%) with no major procedural complications. At follow-up (median 90 days, IQR 58-115 days), 14 (93%) patients reported improved symptoms from New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class III-IV to NYHA Class I-II (p < 0.01) with stable echo-derived mean gradient (7.7 mmHg ± 2 mmHg vs. 8.4 mmHg ± 2.9 mmHg (p = 0.7). CONCLUSIONS: In selected patients with symptomatic inoperable calcific MS, MVL was safe and associated with significant short-term clinical and hemodynamic improvement. MVL may represent a new compassionate therapy for this challenging cohort. Further studies are needed to determine the long-term outcomes and help define the role of IVL technology in treating calcific valvular conditions.

BACKGROUND: Malaria vector control activities in Sudan rely largely on Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs), Indoor Residual Spray (IRS) and Larval Source Management (LSM). The present study attempted to determine cost effectiveness of inputs and operations of vector control interventions applied in different environmental settings in central and eastern Sudan, as well as their impact. METHODS: The inputs utilized and cost of each vector control activity, operational achievements and impact of the applied malaria vector control activities; IRS, LLINs and LSM were determined for eight sites in Al Gazira state (central Sudan) and Al Gadarif state (eastern Sudan). Operational costs were obtained from data of the National Malaria Control Program in 2017. Impact was measured using entomological indicators for Anopheles mosquitoes. RESULTS: The total cost per person per year was $1.6, $0.85, and $0.32 for IRS, LLINs and LSM, respectively. Coverage of vector control operations was 97%, 95.2% and 25-50% in IRS, LLINs and LSM, respectively. Vectorial capacity of malaria vectors showed statistically significant variations (P < 0.034) and ranged 0.294-0.65 in areas implemented LSM in comparison to 0.097-0.248 in areas applied IRS and LLINs, respectively. Both indoor and outdoor biting Anopheles mosquitoes showed noticeable increase that reached 3-12 folds in areas implemented LSM in comparison to areas implemented IRS and LLINs. Annual malaria prevalence was 13.1-21.1% in areas implemented LSM in comparison to 3.20%, 4.77% in areas implemented IRS and LLINs, respectively. CONCLUSION: IRS and LLINs are cost effective control measures due to adequate inputs and organized process. However, the unit cost of LSM intervention per outcome and subsequently the impact is hugely affected by the low coverage. The very weak support for implementation of LSM which includes inputs resulted in weakness of its process and consequently its impact. Implementation of LSM by local government in urban settings is challenged by many factors the most important are maintenance of adequate stable level of funding, un-adequate number of well trained health workers, unstable political and administrative conditions and weak infrastructure. These challenges are critical for proper implementation of LSM and control of malaria in urban settings in Sudan.

Urbanization is gaining force globally, which challenges biodiversity, and it has recently also emerged as an agent of evolutionary change. Seasonal phenology and life cycle regulation are essential processes that urbanization is likely to alter through both the urban heat island effect (UHI) and artificial light at night (ALAN). However, how UHI and ALAN affect the evolution of seasonal adaptations has received little attention. Here, we test for the urban evolution of seasonal life-history plasticity, specifically changes in the photoperiodic induction of diapause in two lepidopterans, Pieris napi (Pieridae) and Chiasmia clathrata (Geometridae). We used long-term data from standardized monitoring and citizen science observation schemes to compare yearly phenological flight curves in six cities in Finland and Sweden to those of adjacent rural populations. This analysis showed for both species that flight seasons are longer and end later in most cities, suggesting a difference in the timing of diapause induction. Then, we used common garden experiments to test whether the evolution of the photoperiodic reaction norm for diapause could explain these phenological changes for a subset of these cities. These experiments demonstrated a genetic shift for both species in urban areas toward a lower daylength threshold for direct development, consistent with predictions based on the UHI but not ALAN. The correspondence of this genetic change to the results of our larger-scale observational analysis of in situ flight phenology indicates that it may be widespread. These findings suggest that seasonal life cycle regulation evolves in urban ectotherms and may contribute to ecoevolutionary dynamics in cities.

Biomphalaria spp. snails are freshwater gastropods that responsible for Schistosoma mansoni transmission. Schistosomiasis is a chronic illness that occurred in underdeveloped regions with poor sanitation. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the molluscicidal activity of benzylamine against B. alexandrina snails and it larvicidal effects on the free larval stages of S. mansoni. Results showed that benzylamine has molluscicidal activity against adult B. alexandrina snails after 24 h of exposure with median lethal concentration (LC50) 85.7 mg/L. The present results indicated the exposure of B. alexandrina snails to LC10 or LC25 of benzylamine resulted in significant decreases in the survival, fecundity (eggs/snail/week) and reproductive rates, acetylcholinesterase, albumin, protein, uric acid and creatinine concentrations, levels of Testosterone (T) and 17ß Estradiol (E), while alkaline phosphatase levels were significantly increased in comparison with control ones. The present results showed that the sub lethal concentration LC50 (85.7 mg/L) of benzylamine has miracidial and cercaricidal activities, where the Lethal Time (LT50) for miracidiae was 17.08 min while for cercariae was 30.6 min. Also, results showed that were decreased significantly after exposure to sub lethal concentrations compared with control. The present results showed that the expression level of NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1) genes and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) in B. alexandrina snails exposed to LC10 or LC25 concentrations benzylamine were significantly decreased compared to the control groups. Therefore, benzylamine could be used as effective molluscicide to control schistosomiasis.

The seasonal variation of petroleum pollution including n-alkanes in surface sediments of the Selangor River in Malaysia during all four climatic seasons was investigated using GC-MS. The concentrations of n-alkanes in the sediment samples did not significantly correlate with TOC (r = 0.34, p > 0.05). The concentrations of the 29 n-alkanes in the Selangor River ranged from 967 to 3711 µg g-1 dw, with higher concentrations detected during the dry season. The overall mean per cent of grain-sized particles in the Selangor River was 85.9 ± 2.85% sand, 13.5 ± 2.8% clay, and 0.59 ± 0.34% gravel, respectively. n-alkanes are derived from a variety of sources, including fresh oil, terrestrial plants, and heavy/degraded oil in estuaries. The results of this study highlight concerns and serve as a warning that hydrocarbon contamination is affecting human health. As a result, constant monitoring and assessment of aliphatic hydrocarbons in coastal and riverine environments are needed.

Recent work has shown that animals frequently use social information from individuals of their own species as well as from other species; however, the ecological and evolutionary consequences of this social information use remain poorly understood. Additionally, information users may be selective in their social information use, deciding from whom and how to use information, but this has been overlooked in an interspecific context. In particular, the intentional decision to reject a behaviour observed via social information has received less attention, although recent work has indicated its presence in various taxa. Based on existing literature, we explore in which circumstances selective interspecific information use may lead to different ecological and coevolutionary outcomes between two species, such as explaining observed co-occurrences of putative competitors. The initial ecological differences and the balance between the costs of competition and the benefits of social information use potentially determine whether selection may lead to trait divergence, convergence or coevolutionary arms race between two species. We propose that selective social information use, including adoption and rejection of behaviours, may have far-reaching fitness consequences, potentially leading to community-level eco-evolutionary outcomes. We argue that these consequences of selective interspecific information use may be much more widespread than has thus far been considered.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nerve blocks constitute an integral portion in the management of chronic pain. The widespread use of ultrasound imaging opened the door to a flood of newer blocks especially truncal plane nerve blocks. We reviewed the current medical literature for studies and case reports utilizing the two most common truncal plane nerve blocks, transversus abdominis plane and erector spinae plane blocks, to manage chronic pain. RECENT FINDINGS: We found some evidence, mostly in case reports and retrospective observational studies, that supports the use of transversus abdominis plane and erector spinae plane nerve blocks, usually with steroids, as a safe and valuable part of interdisciplinary management of chronic abdominal and chest walls pain. Ultrasound-guided truncal fascial plane nerve blocks are safe, easy to learn, and proven to help with post-operative acute pain management. Although limited, our current review provides evidence from the current medical literature regarding the utility of these blocks to manage some of the challenging chronic and cancer-related pain conditions of the trunk region.

Saponins have been used as biopesticides. The objective of the present study is to investigate the toxic effects of Saponin against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails. Results showed that Saponin exhibited a molluscicidal activity against adult B. alexandrina snails at LC50 (70.05 mg/l) and had a larvicidal effect on the free larval stages of Schistosoma mansoni. To evaluate the lethal effects, snails were exposed to either LC10 (51.8 mg/l) or LC25 (60.4 mg/l) concentrations of Saponin. The survival, the infection rates, protein, albumin, and total fat levels were decreased, while glucose levels were increased in exposed snails compared to control snails. Also, these concentrations significantly raised Malondialdehyde (MDA) and Glutathione S Transferase (GST) levels, whereas reduced Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in exposed snails. Furthermore, these concentrations resulted in endocrine disruptions where it caused a significant increase in testosterone (T) level; while a significant decrease in Estradiol (E2) levels were noticed. As for Estrogen (E) level, it was increased after exposure to LC10 Saponin concentration while after exposure to LC25 concentration, it was decreased. Also, LC10 and LC25 concentrations of Saponin caused a genotoxic effect and down-regulation of metabolic cycles in the snails. In conclusion, Saponins caused deleterious effects on the intermediate host of schistosomiasis mansoni. Therefore, B. alexandrina snails could be used as models to screen the toxic effects of Saponins in the aquatic environment and if it was used as a molluscicide, it should be used cautiously and under controlled circumstances.

Green walls in urban environments can be both an aesthetic feature and be of practical use in greywater treatment. This study evaluates the effect of different loading rates (4.5 l/d, 9 l/d, and 18 l/d) on the efficiency of treating actual greywater from a city district in a pilot-scale green wall with five different filter materials as substrates (biochar, pumice, hemp fiber, spent coffee grounds (SCG), and composted fiber soil (CFS)). Three cool climate plant species, Carex nigra, Juncus compressus, and Myosotis scorpioides, were chosen for the green wall. The following parameters were evaluated: biological oxygen demand (BOD), fractions of organic carbon, nutrients, indicator bacteria, surfactants, and salt. Three of the five materials investigated - biochar, pumice, and CFS - showed promising treatment efficiencies. The respective overall reduction efficiencies of BOD, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were 99%, 75%, and 57% for biochar; 96%, 58%, and 61% for pumice; and 99%, 82% and 85% for CFS. BOD was stable in the biochar filter material with effluent concentrations of 2 mg/l across all investigated loading rates. However, higher loading rates had a significantly negative effect on hemp and pumice for BOD. Interestingly, the highest loading rate (18 l/d) flowing over pumice removed the highest levels of TN (80%) and TP (86%). Biochar was the most effective material in removing indicator bacteria, with a 2.2-4.0 Log10 reduction for E. coli and enterococci. SCG was the least efficient material, giving a higher BOD in the effluent than in the influent. Therefore, this study presents the potential of natural and waste-derived filter materials to treat greywater effectively and the results can contribute to the future development of nature-based greywater treatment and management practices in urban areas.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols following mastectomy with or without implant-based breast reconstruction (IBBR) include ketorolac for multimodal perioperative analgesia. There are concerns that ketorolac could be associated with increased risk of postoperative hematoma formation. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients undergoing mastectomy with or without IBBR between January 2013 and December 2019 at a single institution. Patients received 15 mg, 30 mg, or no ketorolac depending on ERAS protocol adherence, patient characteristics, and surgeon preference. Clinically significant hematoma was defined as requiring surgical intervention on day of surgery or postoperative day 1. Patients were compared by demographics, surgical characteristics, ketorolac dose, and hematoma prevalence. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression evaluated hematoma formation odds. RESULTS: Eight hundred patients met inclusion criteria: 477 received ketorolac. Those who received ketorolac were younger, had lower ASA scores, were more likely to have bilateral procedures and undergo concomitant IBBR, had longer operative times, were less likely to take antiplatelet or anticoagulation medications, had higher PACU pain scores, and had higher incidence of hematomas requiring surgical intervention. Of the cohort, 4.4% had clinically significant hematomas. The 15 mg and 30 mg ketorolac groups had similar prevalence (6.0% vs 5.8%, p = 0.95). On univariable regression, there were increased odds of hematoma formation in patients who were younger, had bilateral procedures, had longer OR times, and who received ketorolac. On multivariable regression, none of the prior variables remained significant. CONCLUSION: After accounting for associations with longer operative times, concomitant IBBR, and bilateral procedures, ketorolac administration did not remain an independent risk factor for hematoma formation.

Circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-bound nanoparticles secreted by most cells for intracellular communication and transportation of biomolecules. EVs carry proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and receptors that are involved in human physiology and pathology. EV cargo is variable and highly related to the type and state of the cellular origin. Three subtypes of EVs have been identified: exosomes, microvesicles, and apoptotic bodies. Exosomes are the smallest and the most well-studied class of EVs that regulate different biological processes and participate in several diseases, such as cancers and autoimmune diseases. Proteomic analysis of exosomes succeeded in profiling numerous types of proteins involved in disease development and prognosis. In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), exosomes revealed a potential function in joint inflammation. These EVs possess a unique function, as they can transfer specific autoantigens and mediators between distant cells. Current proteomic data demonstrated that exosomes could provide beneficial effects against autoimmunity and exert an immunosuppressive action, particularly in RA. Based on these observations, effective therapeutic strategies have been developed for arthritis and other inflammatory disorders.

Malposition of the branch pulmonary arteries (MBPA) is an unusual malformation characterised by anomalous origin of both pulmonary arteries from the main pulmonary trunk. To date, only few cases have been reported. Herein, we present the first case report of a 3-day-old, full-term male neonate with the lesser form of crossed pulmonary arteries in Saudi Arabia detected by echocardiography and confirmed by cardiac CT. Crossed pulmonary arteries is not a rare anomaly, but it is a somewhat underreported anomaly, and their recognition is important because it is usually associated with other CHDs, airway obstruction, extra-cardiac anomalies, and certain genetic syndromes.

Textile wastewater is ranked highly contaminated among all industrial waste. During textile processing, the consumption of dyes and complex chemicals at various stages makes textile industrial wastewater highly challenging. Therefore, conventional processes based on single-unit treatment may not be sufficient to comply with the environmental quality discharge standards and more stringent guidelines for zero discharge of hazardous chemicals (ZDHC). In this study, a novel approach was followed by recycling Poly aluminum chloride (PACl) and Alum as a catalyst for the first time in the catalytic ozonation treatment process leading to a nascent method after using them as a coagulant in Coagulation/Flocculation. In the current investigation, six different combinations were studied to remove turbidity, TSS, COD, BOD5, color, and biodegradability (BOD5/COD ratios) of wastewater. Moreover, Central Composite Design was implied using RSM in Minitab software. During the combination of treatment processes, it was found that the pre-coagulation/flocculation with coagulant PACl followed by post-catalytic ozonation with recycled PACl, a more effective treatment than others. The optimum R.E of turbidity, TSS, COD, and color were 84%, 86%, 89%, and 98%, respectively. Moreover, a decrease in toxicity and increase in biodegradability (BOD5/COD ratio from 0.29 to 0.54) was observed as well. The electrical energy demand and operational costs of treatment processes were estimated and compared with other treatment processes.

The aim of this a pioneering research is to investigate linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) as biomarkers of sewage pollution in sediments collected from four rivers and estuaries of the south and east of Peninsular Malaysia. The sediment samples went through soxhlet extraction, two-step column chromatography purification, fractionation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Principal component analysis (PCA) with multivariate linear regression (MLR) was used as well for source apportionment of LABs. The results of this study showed that total LAB concentration was 36-1196 ng g-1dw. The internal to external isomer ratios (I/E ratio) of LABs were from 0.56 to 3.12 indicated release of raw sewage and primary and secondary effluents into the environment of south and east of Peninsular Malaysia. Our research supported that continuous monitoring of sewage pollution to limit the environmental pollution in riverine and estuarine ecosystem.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a highly morphic, retrovirus that rapidly evolves through mutation as well as recombination. Because of the immunocompromised status in HIV patients, there is often a higher chance of acquiring different secondary infections followed by liver cirrhosis, hepatitis B & C, and HIV-associated nephropathy. The current study was conducted to see the prevalence of secondary infections, hematological and biochemical markers for liver and renal associated diseases, and to detect the envelope gene (GP41) in newly diagnosed HIV patients. A total of 37 samples were collected from HIV-positive patients registered in different hospital settings under the National AIDS control program. The collected samples were processed for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hematological analysis, and biochemical analysis. To identify the envelope gene in newly diagnosed HIV patients, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed using four gene-specific primers. The HIV infections were seen more in male as compared to females. A significant decrease in complete blood count was observed in HIV patients when compared to healthy individuals. There was a significant increase in aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), urea, and creatinine observed in HIV patients. No significant difference was observed in alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin, and albumin levels when compared to healthy control. Anemia was observed in 59.4% of HIV patients. A total of three (8.1%) patients were found to be co-infected with hepatitis B and one (2.7 %) was co-infected with hepatitis C. Out of these 37 tested samples, a total of four showed the successful amplification of the envelope gene. This study provides platform for the health care facilitators to regularly monitor the signs, symptoms and clinical biomarkers of HIV-associated infections to prevent toxicity at an early stage to improve the quality of life (QoL) and minimize the mortality rate in HIV patients. Envelope gene mutating frequently results in drug resistance, and thus future research on polymorphism analysis will reveal points of substitutions to improve drug designing.

1. In this study, the proteomics method was applied to genetically evaluate the performance and carcase characteristics of Japanese quail and their molecular mechanisms, and to further determine and analyse the meat quality and muscle proteins. 2. Ten Japanese quail were selected from among 400 quail from the seventh generation of a population. Various traits were recorded and multivariate analysis was applied using Wombat software. 3. Differential expression of pectoral muscle proteins was performed, whereby nine spots were selected (P < 0.05) for determination. All proteins from the quail group with the highest breeding value showed significantly greater relative intensity, except for serum albumin. 4. The results showed that an increase in growth rate can cause disturbances in most organs and their metabolism, although the increase in the expression of some proteins indicated that the bird's body tends to adapt to special conditions. 5. The allocation of genetic resources is likely to maintain the balance between most organs, which does not overlap. However, most evidence shows that meat quality has been reduced, but to a limited extent, by selection for growth.

In an attempt to improve the low oral bioavailability of Diacerein (DCN), the combination of a ternary solid dispersion and an asymmetric osmotic pump system had been designed to enhance solubility and to control DCN delivery. Ternary DCN solid dispersion was prepared by melting fusion method using surfactant polymers, and carrier (Pluronic® PF127, Solutol® HS15, and PEG 35 K) and this DCN solid dispersion powder with the proper amount of excipients were compressed and coated with Opadry®CA to develop a Semi-Permeable and Asymmetric Osmotic Pump tablets. The ternary DCN solid dispersion by using surfactant polymers (Pluronic® F127 and Solutol® HS 15) with a ratio of 1:1 was displayed market significant improvement in saturated solubility (70.2 ± 4.14 µg/ml) and fast dissolution rate (Q60min = 79.28 ± 3.1% and IDR5 min = 5.25 ± 0.19 ml/min) in comparison to pure DCN. Moreover, the optimized asymmetric osmotic pump tablet with following parameters; 3% w/v Opadry® CA coat concentration, 1% w/w HPMC E15 gelling polymer and 35.8%w/w NaCl Osmogen concentration, was displayed control release of DCN at zero-order kinetic (R2 = 0.977) for up to 24 h(s). The in-vivo study conducted on rabbits was revealed a significant enhancement in the bioavailability of the optimized osmotic pump (28.84 ± 3.32 ng.hr/ml) compared to DCN dispersion (10.39 ± 1.45 ng.hr/ml). In conclusion, the approach of enhancing solubility and wet-ability in accompany with optimized asymmetric osmotic pump system could serve as a promising delivery system and a way to improve the bioavailability of poorly aqueous soluble drugs.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the compliance of Jordanian nurses with ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention guidelines and the barriers to compliance. METHOD: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used. A convenience sample of 294 nurses from nine hospitals in Jordan completed a self-reported questionnaire. RESULTS: According to the study compliance categories, 45.6% of the participants reported 'insufficient compliance,' 24.8% 'weak compliance' and 29.6% 'sufficient compliance.' Nurses with more experience and previous education on ventilator-associated pneumonia reported higher compliance scores than their counterparts with less experience and no previous education. Nurses reported several barriers that limited their own compliance, such as lack of education, lack of policies and protocols, lack of resources and the shortage of staff. CONCLUSION: The compliance of nursing staff with the prevention guidelines was poor. Applying tailored educational programs may help improve their level of compliance. These programs must target new graduate nurses and be conducted in those hospitals with limited resources.

A rapid shift from traditional Sanger sequencing-based molecular methods to the phylogenomic approach with large numbers of loci is underway. Among phylogenomic methods, restriction site associated DNA (RAD) sequencing approaches have gained much attention as they enable rapid generation of up to thousands of loci randomly scattered across the genome and are suitable for nonmodel species. RAD data sets however suffer from large amounts of missing data and rapid locus dropout along with decreasing relatedness among taxa. The relationship between locus dropout and the amount of phylogenetic information retained in the data has remained largely uninvestigated. Similarly, phylogenetic hypotheses based on RAD have rarely been compared with phylogenetic hypotheses based on multilocus Sanger sequencing, even less so using exactly the same species and specimens. We compared the Sanger-based phylogenetic hypothesis (8 loci; 6172 bp) of 32 species of the diverse moth genus Eupithecia (Lepidoptera, Geometridae) to that based on double-digest RAD sequencing (3256 loci; 726,658 bp). We observed that topologies were largely congruent, with some notable exceptions that we discuss. The locus dropout effect was strong. We demonstrate that number of loci is not a precise measure of phylogenetic information since the number of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may remain low at very shallow phylogenetic levels despite large numbers of loci. As we hypothesize, the number of SNPs and parsimony informative SNPs (PIS) is low at shallow phylogenetic levels, peaks at intermediate levels and, thereafter, declines again at the deepest levels as a result of decay of available loci. Similarly, we demonstrate with empirical data that the locus dropout affects the type of loci retained, the loci found in many species tending to show lower interspecific distances than those shared among fewer species. We also examine the effects of the numbers of loci, SNPs, and PIS on nodal bootstrap support, but could not demonstrate with our data our expectation of a positive correlation between them. We conclude that RAD methods provide a powerful tool for phylogenomics at an intermediate phylogenetic level as indicated by its broad congruence with an eight-gene Sanger data set in a genus of moths. When assessing the quality of the data for phylogenetic inference, the focus should be on the distribution and number of SNPs and PIS rather than on loci.

The evolution of seasonal polyphenisms (discrete phenotypes in different annual generations) associated with alternative developmental pathways of diapause (overwintering) and direct development is favoured in temperate insects. Seasonal life history polyphenisms are common and include faster growth and development under direct development than in diapause. However, the physiological underpinnings of this difference remain poorly known despite its significance for understanding the evolution of polyphenisms. We measured respiration and metabolic rates through the penultimate and final larval instars in the butterfly Pieris napi and show that directly developing larvae grew and developed faster and had a higher metabolic rate than larvae entering pupal diapause. The metabolic divergence appeared only in the final instar, that is, after induction of the developmental pathway that takes place in the penultimate instar in P. napi. The accumulation of fat reserves during the final larval instar was similar under diapause and direct development, which was unexpected as diapause is predicted to select for exaggerated reserve accumulation. This suggests that overwinter survival in diapause does not require larger energy reserves than direct development, likely because of metabolic suppression in diapause pupae. The results, nevertheless, demonstrate that physiological changes coincide with the divergence of life histories between the alternative developmental pathways, thus elucidating the proximate basis of seasonal life history polyphenisms.
