RESUMO

Residue behaviour and dietary risk assessment of cyantraniliprole, flubendiamide and acetamiprid in broccoli were carried out using the QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) technique coupled with LC-MS/MS. The QuEChERS technique was validated on parameters such as linearity, accuracy, precision, robustness, matrix effects, limit of quantification (LOQ), specificity, retention time and ion ratio as per SANTE (Directorate General for Health and Food Safety) guidelines to attest to the specificity, accuracy and precision of the analytical method in estimating insecticide residues in and on broccoli heads and cropped soil. The LOQ of the method for all three insecticides was 0.01 mg/kg. The initial deposits of cyantraniliprole, flubendiamide and acetamiprid reduced to half of its concentration in 1.873-2.354, 1.975-2.484 and 1.371-1.620 days, respectively. No residues were detected in broccoli-cropped soil at harvest time (30 days after last spray). The proposed maximum residue limits (MRLs) of 1.5, 0.5-0.9 and 2.0-3 mg/kg for cyantraniliprole, flubendiamide and acetamiprid were calculated using the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development MRL calculator. The acute and chronic dietary risk assessment of the tested insecticides identified no appreciable dietary risk to the Indian population from the consumption of broccoli heads. The findings of no dietary risk highlight the importance of informed pesticide usage in broccoli and the proposed MRL derived from this study offers crucial guidelines for the regulatory authorities, ensuring the safety of broccoli consumption.

This study explores how individuals who have experienced COVID-19 share their stories on YouTube, focusing on the nature of information disclosure, public engagement, and emotional impact pertaining to consumer health. Using a dataset of 186 YouTube videos, we used text mining and video analytics techniques to analyze textual transcripts and visual frames to identify themes, emotions, and their relationship with viewer engagement metrics. Findings reveal eight key themes: infection origins, symptoms, treatment, mental well-being, isolation, prevention, government directives, and vaccination. While viewers engaged most with videos about infection origins, treatment, and vaccination, fear and sadness in the text consistently drove views, likes, and comments. Visuals primarily conveyed happiness and sadness, but their influence on engagement varied. This research highlights the crucial role YouTube plays in disseminating COVID-19 patient narratives and suggests its potential for improving health communication strategies. By understanding how emotions and content influence viewer engagement, healthcare professionals and public health officials can tailor their messaging to better connect with the public and address pandemic-related anxieties.

Instant rice is well-suited for ready-to-use applications as low-moisture, light-weight military ration and emergency food for our Armed Forces, offering longer shelf life with rapid rehydration characteristics. Present investigation demonstrated the effect of different salt pretreatment during soaking as precooking operation on the physico-chemical, cooking and rehydration kinetics of instant rice. Application of salt pretreatment reduced bulk density and damaged grain percentage, while enhanced the porosity, volume expansion percent, weight gain percentage, and rehydration characteristics. The grain elongation ratio was not affected significantly by the application of salt pretreatments; however, water uptake and chemical composition were significantly affected. Soaking pretreatment with 1% calcium chloride, followed by open pan cooking and subsequently freeze-thaw-dehydrating until attainment of 5-6% moisture content was found to be the optimal processing condition for developing instant rice with less than 2 min of rehydration time by mere addition of hot water. Modelling of water absorption behaviour revealed that both Peleg (R2 0.980-0.999) and Singh and Kulshrestha (R2 0.966-0.999) models fitted well. A new approach to control the n-doping reaction of organic semiconductors is reported using surface-functionalized gold nanoparticles (f-AuNPs) with alkylthiols acting as the catalyst only upon mild thermal activation. To demonstrate the versatility of this methodology, the reaction of the n-type dopant precursor N-DMBI-H with several molecular and polymeric semiconductors at different temperatures with/without f-AuNPs, vis-à-vis the unfunctionalized catalyst AuNPs, was investigated by spectroscopic, morphological, charge transport, and kinetic measurements as well as, computationally, the thermodynamic of catalyst activation. The combined experimental and theoretical data demonstrate that while f-AuNPs is inactive at room temperature both in solution and in the solid state, catalyst activation occurs rapidly at mild temperatures (~70 °C) and the doping reaction completes in few seconds affording large electrical conductivities (~10-140 S cm-1). The implementation of this methodology enables the use of semiconductor+dopant+catalyst solutions and will broaden the use of the corresponding n-doped films in opto-electronic devices such as thin-film transistors, electrochemical transistors, solar cells, and thermoelectrics well as guide the design of new catalysts.

Even though the scientific documentation is limited, microbiome of healing clay is gradually gaining attention of the scientific community, as a therapeutic force playing an indispensable role in skin disease management. The present study explores the metatranscriptome profile of the Chamliyal clay, widely known for its efficacy in managing various skin problems, using Illumina NextSeq sequencing technology. The gene expression profile of the clay microbial community was analyzed through SEED subsystems of the MG-RAST server. Due to the unavailability of metatranscriptomic data on other therapeutic clays, Chamliyal's profile was compared to non-therapeutic soils, as well as healthy and diseased human skin microbiomes. The study identified Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria as the primary active microbial phyla in Chamliyal clay. These resemble those abundant in a healthy human skin microbiome. This is significant as lower levels of these phyla in the skin are linked to inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis. Interestingly, pathogenic microbes actively metabolizing in the clay were absent. Importantly, 6% of the transcripts annotated to sulfur and iron metabolism, which are known to play a major role in skin disease management. This study provides the most comprehensive and a novel overview of the metatranscriptome of any of the healing clay available worldwide. The findings offer valuable insights into the clay microbiome's potential in managing skin disorders, inspiring future endeavors to harness these insights for medical applications.

Mancozeb residue estimation was done using second derivative ultraviolet spectroscopy by Shimadzu ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, and chlorpyrifos was estimated by QuEChERS technique using GC-FPD. The persistence for chlorpyrifos was carried out at two locations, and for mancozeb, persistence studies were carried out at four locations. Initial deposits of mancozeb on apple fruits ranged from 1.33 to 1.63 mg/kg at the recommended dose and from 2.55 to 3.26 mg/kg at double the recommended dose at all four locations. Chlorpyrifos residues in apple fruits had an initial deposit of 0.94-0.99 mg/kg at recommended dose and 1.75-1.92 mg/kg at double the recommended dose. Mancozeb residues in apple fruit were below the detection limit (BDL) after 20 days at recommended dose and after 25 days at double the recommended dose at two locations, while mancozeb residue at the other two locations and the residues of chlorpyrifos at all locations reached BDL after 15 and 20 days at recommended and double the recommended doses, respectively. Half-life of mancozeb varied from 3.07 to 4.02 days at recommended dose and from 3.30 to 4.32 days at double the recommended dose, whereas chlorpyrifos residues dissipated to half their initial concentration on 2.33-2.35 days at recommended dose and 2.89-2.90 days at double the recommended dose. The soil samples showed no presence of residues of chlorpyrifos and mancozeb at harvest. The risk assessment revealed that hazard quotient for the intake of mancozeb was in the range of 0.06-0.13% and 0.20-0.44% for rural and urban population, while for the intake of chlorpyrifos, hazard quotient was in the range of 0.10-0.12% for rural population and 0.33-0.38% for urban population, and theoretical maximum dietary intake (9.67 × 10-5 mg/person and 3.18 × 10-4 mg/person for rural population and urban population in case of mancozeb and 3.22 × 10-5 mg/person and 1.06 × 10-4 mg/person for rural population and urban population in case of chlorpyrifos) was also found to be less than maximum permissible intake (1.38 mg/kg for mancozeb and 0.60 mg/kg for chlorpyrifos). The results of risk assessment thereby indicated that apple consumption does not pose a risk to human health.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. COPD exacerbations are associated with a worsening of lung function, increased disease burden, and mortality, and, therefore, preventing their occurrence is an important goal of COPD management. This review was conducted to identify the evidence base regarding risk factors and predictors of moderate-to-severe exacerbations in patients with COPD. METHODS: A literature review was performed in Embase, MEDLINE, MEDLINE In-Process, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). Searches were conducted from January 2015 to July 2019. Eligible publications were peer-reviewed journal articles, published in English, that reported risk factors or predictors for the occurrence of moderate-to-severe exacerbations in adults age ≥ 40 years with a diagnosis of COPD. RESULTS: The literature review identified 5112 references, of which 113 publications (reporting results for 76 studies) met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Among the 76 studies included, 61 were observational and 15 were randomized controlled clinical trials. Exacerbation history was the strongest predictor of future exacerbations, with 34 studies reporting a significant association between history of exacerbations and risk of future moderate or severe exacerbations. Other significant risk factors identified in multiple studies included disease severity or bronchodilator reversibility (39 studies), comorbidities (34 studies), higher symptom burden (17 studies), and higher blood eosinophil count (16 studies). CONCLUSIONS: This systematic literature review identified several demographic and clinical characteristics that predict the future risk of COPD exacerbations. Prior exacerbation history was confirmed as the most important predictor of future exacerbations. These prognostic factors may help clinicians identify patients at high risk of exacerbations, which are a major driver of the global burden of COPD, including morbidity and mortality.

We aimed to assess the diagnostic and economic value of next-generation sequencing (NGS) versus single-gene testing, and of liquid biopsy (LBx) versus tissue biopsy (TBx) in non-small-cell lung cancer biomarker testing through literature review. Embase and MEDLINE were searched to identify relevant studies (n = 43) from 2015 to 2020 in adults with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. For NGS versus single-gene testing, concordance was 70-99% and sensitivity was 86-100%. For LBx versus TBx, specificity was 43-100% and sensitivity was ≥60%. Turnaround times were longer for NGS versus single-gene testing (but not vs sequential testing) and faster for LBx versus TBx. NGS was cost-effective, and LBx reduced US per-patient costs. NGS versus single-gene testing and LBx versus TBx were concordant. NGS and LBx may be cost-effective for initial screening.


Plain language summary Patients with lung cancer with specific genetic mutations can benefit from medications that are specific to those mutations, known as targetable mutations. There are many methods to test for specific genetic mutations in patients with lung cancer. To detect genetic mutations, doctors can test the blood or urine, or they can test biopsy tissue; a small piece of the tumor removed from the lung. These tests can either look for mutations in one specific gene at a time, or they can use technology that reads the entire DNA sequence to observe multiple genes at once. In this review, we examined scientific reports to answer important questions about using genetic testing to find targetable mutations in patients with lung cancer. How accurate are different genetic tests? How fast can doctors get results from different genetic tests? How much do different genetic tests cost? We found that reading the entire DNA sequence was as accurate as testing one specific gene. Reading the entire DNA sequence takes more time than testing one specific gene, but it might reduce overall costs. Testing blood or urine was not as accurate as testing tissue, but it took less time for doctors to receive genetic test results and reduced costs.

Sediments from banks of the Sutlej River and roadside soils from vicinity of Ropar wetland (collected during pre- and post-monsoon seasons, 2013) were analysed to determine the spatiotemporal distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs, viz. arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, lead and zinc), which when present in high concentrations may pose health hazards and ecological risk. Contamination factor, degree of contamination, modified degree of contamination, metal pollution index, pollution load index, enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index and ecological risk index were also determined for these PTEs in the study area. Sediment and soil samples were found to be alkaline and non-saline (pH > 7.0; EC < 4500 µS cm-1) with sodium and potassium as major ions. Iron (mg kg-1) was found to be most abundant in sediments (1477.59-6512.45) and soils (922.64-12,455.00). Cadmium content in sediments exceeded the threshold value (0.99 mg kg-1) at 2 (pre-monsoon) and 3 (post-monsoon) sampling sites. In both seasons, cadmium (0.10-2.05) and cobalt (11.40-17.52) contents (mg kg-1) exceeded the threshold limits (0.06 and 8.00 respectively) in all roadside soils. Significant spatiotemporal variation (p ≤ 0.05) was observed for pH; EC; and calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc contents. Low to moderate potential ecological risk was observed for both roadside soils (31.80-213.82) and sediments (41.47-236.73). Contamination factor, enrichment factor and geoaccumulation index for cadmium were highest in roadside soils (6.84, 46.91 and 2.19, respectively) and sediments (7.64, 167.46 and 2.35, respectively) due to settlement of coal fly ash released from the industrial setups, on sediments/soils of the study area.

Twelve wheat genotypes with variable grain hardness were evaluated for grain, flour, pasting, dough rheological properties, high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) and their relationship with cookie quality characteristics. The degree of hardness played an important role in the expression of characters under study. Genotypes with higher grain hardness index (GHI) showed higher dough development time and dough stability. GHI and solvent retention capacity were positively related to each other and negatively to spread factor. GluD1 locus of majority of hard wheat genotypes showed 5 + 10 subunit while soft wheat (SW) genotypes with 2 + 12 subunit related to gluten quality and dough properties. Overall, variation in subunits at GluD1 locus led to greater variation amongst studied genotypes followed by GluB1 and GluA1. Subunits Null at GluA1, 20, 7 + 8 and 7 + 9 at GluB1, and 2 + 12 and 5 + 10 at GluD1 showed a profound effect on flour, dough and cookie quality. Distribution of different HMW-GS, gluten characteristics and GHI, thus emerged as major parameters for selection of wheat genotypes for development of cookies. SW (QBP 13-11) with the lowest GHI and HMW-GS profile (2*, 7 and 2 + 12 subunit) showed the highest cookie SF and the lowest BS, thereby, turning out to be the best suitable genotype for producing cookies. Background & objectives: Elevated soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL2R) is a diagnostic criterion for haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). International guidelines propose a 2400 U/ml cut-off or individual laboratory-defined cut-off. However, sIL2R normal values are so far not known in Indians. So, this study was undertaken to measure sIL2R in healthy children and adults to establish age-related reference values. Methods: Healthy controls and cases (participants with persistent fever, organomegaly, cytopenias and biochemical markers of HLH) were prospectively enrolled. Serum sIL2R was measured by double-sandwich enzyme immunoassay in a standardization batch to determine the optimum cut-off value using receiver operator characteristic curve and was subsequently validated. Results: One hundred and forty six age- and sex-matched children (80 controls and 66 suspected HLH cases) and 55 adults (49 controls and 6 suspected HLH cases) were prospectively enrolled. The optimal sIL2R cut-off ≥23 ng/ml was defined as raised sIL2R in the standardization batch. No controls had sIL2R ≥23 ng/ml in the validation batch. In healthy controls, median sIL2R (interquartile range) decreased with increasing age from 9.0 ng/ml (6.6-13.4) below five years of age to 3.2 ng/ml (2.8-5.1) in adults. Proposed upper limit of normal value for sIL2R is 17.4 ng/ml in less than five year, 12.2 ng/ml in 5-9 yr, 6.7 ng/ml in 10-17 yr and 5.2 ng/ml in ≥18 yr. sIL2R accuracy to diagnose HLH marginally improved with age-appropriate cut-off. Interpretation & conclusions: Paediatric controls in India showed higher sIL2R levels than most studies conducted in other countries, except for some reports in Chinese and Russian populations. Age-appropriate reference values of sIL2R in a specific population may be considered to determine elevated sIL2R as a marker of HLH.

This review paper discusses the properties of nanomaterials, namely graphene, molybdenum disulfide, carbon nanotubes, and quantum dots for unique sensing applications. Based on the specific analyte to be detected and the functionalization techniques that are employed, some noteworthy sensors that have been developed are discussed. Further, biocompatible sensors fabricated from these materials capable of detecting specific chemical compounds are also highlighted for COVID-19 detection purposes, which can aid in efficient and reliable sensing as well as timely diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a devastating complication of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) and is an important determinant of its outcome. We propose a model which would help to predict development of infarction or cerebrovascular events in patients of TBM. METHODS: A prospective study with n=129 patients of TBM were evaluated for predictors and outcomes of stroke. A diagnostic grid was formulated with clinical, laboratory and radiology as parameters to predict the vascular outcomes. All patients were followed up for mortality and disability on the basis of modified rankin score (mRS). MRI & CSF cytokines TNF-alpha, IFN- gamma & IL-6,8, 10 were measured at baseline and 3 months. The diagnosis of TBM included definite, probable & possible types and stage I & II with early and late onset of symptoms respectively. RESULTS: The mortality was 16.2% and 19.4% of all patients developed stroke. The mean GCS, barthel index and mRS at admission was 57.03± 9.5,10.2±2.3 & 3.3±0.03 respectively mild to moderate infection and functional limitation. Barthel index (BI) happened to be a strong predictor [F=32.6, p=0.001, t=15.5, ßeta coefficient =0.002] followed by biomarker TNF-α [F=18.9, p=0.02, t= -2.07, ßeta coefficient=-0.04]. N=25 patients developed stroke with TNF-α, IL-6, IFN -γ showing statistically significant increase in all the stroke affected TBM (95% CI; 4.5 to 1.2; p=0.003). At 3 months, it was observed that mRS was statistically significant between stage I & II (95% CI; 5.4 to 2.1; p=0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Our data revealed that 19.4% patients developed vascular events during the hospital stay or follow up. We recruited late onset TBM as compared to early onset. BI, TNF-α, IL6 are most potent predictors of stroke post TBM.

Academic performance and excellence of college students are mainly depending on their cognitive functions. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a yogic lock or hold, Moola bandha (perineum contraction) on cognitive functions of teacher training college students. Twenty-three healthy volunteers with the mean ± standard deviation age of 21.96 ± 1.64 years were recruited from a district institute of education and training (DIET) college, North India. All the subjects were asked to perform Moola bandha for the duration of 30 min a day (15 min in the morning and 15 min in the evening) for a period of 30 days. Assessments were taken before and after the intervention period. Results of this study showed a significant increase in the scores of d2 attention total number, digits span forward and backward test, Stroop tasks (neutral total and correct, congruent total and correct, and incongruent correct), and self-control scale along with a significant reduction in d2 attention (omission, commission, and timings), trail making text A and B duration, and positive and negative affective schedule's negative affect scores compared with its respective baseline. These results suggest that 30 min of daily practice of Moola bandha for 30 days is effective in improving the cognitive functions of teacher training college students.

Clay therapy for skin disease treatment is an ancient practice popular worldwide as a cheap alternative to pharmaceutical products. Effectiveness of clay against skin problems has been linked to its mineral composition and to microbial activity. The clay-water paste of a holy shrine Chamliyal in the Jammu region of J&K, India is used as an ointment to treat different skin disorders particularly psoriasis. Using the 16 SrDNA amplicon pyrosequencing and whole-metagenome direct shotgun Illumina sequencing, microbial phylogeny and potential metabolic functions were catalogued for Chamliyal's clay. Microbial diversity profile of the Chamliyal's clay is similar to other medicinal clays, particularly Dead Sea; there is some uniqueness as well. Although Proteobacteria, Actinomycetes and Firmicutes are common inhabitants of all the clay types, sulphur- and iron-reducing bacteria like Deferribacterales are particular to clays used for skin healing. In the present study it is proposed that healing properties of clay may be due to the microbes and microbial genes associated with metabolism of minerals like iron and sulphur, that lead to mineral acquisition in the Chamliyal's clay.

Misfolding and aggregation of cellular prion protein is associated with a large array of neurological disorders commonly called the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Designing inhibitors against prions has remained a daunting task owing to limited information about mechanism(s) of their pathogenic self-assembly. Here, we explore the anti-prion properties of a combinatorial library of bispidine-based peptidomimetics (BPMs) that conjugate amino acids with hydrophobic and aromatic side chains. Keeping the bispidine unit unaltered, a series of structurally diverse BPMs were synthesized and tested for their prion-modulating properties. Administration of Leu- and Trp-BPMs delayed and completely inhibited the amyloidogenic conversion of human prion protein (HuPrP), respectively. We found that each BPM induced the HuPrP to form unique oligomeric nanostructures differing in their biophysical properties, cellular toxicities and response to conformation-specific antibodies. While Leu-BPMs were found to stabilize the oligomers, Trp-BPMs effected transient oligomerization, resulting in the formation of non-toxic, non-fibrillar aggregates. Yet another aromatic residue, Phe, however, accelerated the aggregation process in HuPrP. Molecular insights obtained through MD (molecular dynamics) simulations suggested that each BPM differently engages a conserved Tyr 169 residue at the α2-ß2 loop of HuPrP and affects the stability of α2 and α3 helices. Our results demonstrate that this new class of molecules having chemical scaffolds conjugating hydrophobic/aromatic residues could effectively modulate prion aggregation and toxicity.

Present study was conducted to estimate the bioconcentration of total arsenic (t-As), manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) in mustard seeds and maize grains cultivated in agricultural fields of Ropar wetland and its surroundings. Possible health risks posed to residents of study area via daily dietary intake of inorganic arsenic (i-As), manganese and iron via consumption of mustard seeds, maize grains and groundwater were also assessed. i-As content was determined form t-As using relevant conversion factor (i-As = t-As in groundwater and i-As = 70% t-As in food crops). Mustard seeds acted as accumulator of arsenic as mean bioconcentration factor (BCF) was > 1 for 66.67% of the samples. BCFs of t-As, Mn and Fe for mustard seeds and maize grains varied logarithmically with their respective concentrations in soil samples, except BCF for Mn in mustard seeds, which followed a linear model. Hazard quotient and hazard index values of i-As, Mn and Fe were found to be > 1 for mustard seeds and groundwater samples. Possible cancer risk was determined for i-As in mustard seeds, maize grains and groundwater samples > 1.00E-06. These results indicated that daily dietary intake of mustard seeds, maize grains and groundwater contaminated with i-As, Mn and Fe is highly unsafe as it may cause a high possibility of appearance of cancerous and non-cancerous health problems in human population of study area.

The adherence of bacteria to epithelial cells and mucosal surfaces is a prerequisite for their colonization in the gut and a key criterion for the selection of probiotics. In this study, the eleven indigenous lactic acid bacterial isolates obtained from traditional fermented foods of Western Himalayas were screened for their adherence potential to intestinal epithelial cell lines. The level of adherence of eleven indigenous isolates to Caco-2 and HT-29 cell lines varied from 2.45 ± 0.5 to 9.55 ± 0.76% and 4.11 ± 0.68 to 12.88 ± 0.63%, respectively. Percent adhesion of indigenous isolates to Caco-2 cells was relatively lower as compared to HT-29 cells. Indigenous isolate AdF10 (L. plantarum) was found to be the most adhesive to HT-29 and Caco-2 with corresponding figures of 12.88 ± 0.63 and 9.55 ± 0.76%, respectively. AdF4 (B. coagulans) was found to be least adhesive to HT-29 and Caco-2 with respective corresponding figures of 4.11 ± 0.68 and 2.45 ± 0.5%. Based on the percent adhesion values, indigenous isolate AdF10 (L. plantarum) was comparable to the reference probiotic strain L. rhamnosus GG-ATCC-53103 with respective adhesion of 13.5 ± 1.19 and 10.33 ± 0.64% to HT-29 and Caco-2 cell lines. It was closely followed by indigenous isolates AdF5 (L. plantarum) and AdF6 (L. plantarum); thus, indicating their potential as a promising probiotic candidates.

Pyrene and tryptophan groups judiciously placed on a novel molecular scaffold, namely, bispidine exhibited fluorescence due to the formation of an unprecedented emissive intramolecular complex in polar solvents. Upon protonation, the emission signal from the pyrene unit enhances at the expense of the emission signal from the complex. The probe demonstrates good sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and adequate reversibility towards proton sensing. The present design based on the bispidine scaffold opens up newer opportunities for the design of novel bispidine-peptide sensors.

Arsenic (As) is a carcinogenic metalloid that enters food chain through food and water and poses health risk to living beings. It is important to assess the As status in the environment and risks associated with it. Hence, a risk assessment study was conducted across Ropar wetland, Punjab, India and its environs in pre-monsoon season of 2013, to estimate the risk posed to adults and children via daily consumption of As contaminated groundwater and wheat grains. Arsenic concentrations determined in groundwater, soil and wheat grain samples using atomic absorption spectrometer ranged from 2.90 to 10.56 µg L(-1), 0.06 to 0.12 mg kg(-1) and 0.03 to 0.21 mg kg(-1), respectively. Arsenic in wheat grains showed significant negative correlation with phosphate content in soil indicating a competitive uptake of arsenate and phosphate ions by plants. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis suggested that both natural and anthropogenic factors contribute to variation in As content and other variables studied in soil and groundwater samples. Total cancer risk and hazard index were higher than the USEPA safety limits of 1.00 × 10(-6) and 1, respectively, for both adults and children indicating a high risk of cancer and other health disorders. Consumption of As contaminated wheat grains was found to pose higher risk of cancer and non-cancer health disorders as compared to intake of As contaminated groundwater by both adults and children. Moreover, children were found to be more prone to cancer and other heath disorders due to As exposure via wheat grains and groundwater as compared to adults.
