RESUMO

Bimetallic nanowires play important roles in the fields of electronics and mechanics. However, their structure types and morphological control methods are limited, especially for systems with low lattice mismatch. Herein, for a Cu-Ni bimetallic system with lattice mismatch ratio less than 2.5%, a novel preparation approach of various Cu-Ni nanowires dominated by Ni(II) reduction kinetics is presented. With the increase of Ni(II) reduction rate, the core-shell Cu@Ni straight nanowires, the asymmetric Cu-Ni nanocurves, and asymmetric Cu-Ni nanocoils can be prepared, respectively. The formation of Cu-Ni nanowires with different structures can be divided into the growth of Cu nanowires and the deposition of Ni. The regulatory effects were revealed by establishing a kinetic model for Ni(II) reduction. For the novel Cu-Ni asymmetrically distributed nanocurves and nanocoils, the formation mechanism was proposed by considering the Cu nanowire bending due to the rearrangement of surface ligand and bending-induced symmetry breaking of Ni(II) reduction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The risk of cardiac disease mortality has recently become a focal point of concern within the medical community for patients with prostate cancer (PCa). Given that radical prostatectomy (RP) and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) are the main treatment modalities for localized PCa, their specific impact on cardiovascular-specific mortality (CSM) remains unclear. This study explored the specific effects of RP and EBRT on CSM risk to guide clinical treatment decisions. METHODS: Data from patients aged 45-74 years, who were diagnosed with T1-2N0M0 stage PCa from the SEER database (2010-2015), were used. Multivariate statistical methods, including propensity score matching (PSM), competing risk regression, COX regression analysis, and Fine-Gray testing, were applied to assess the impact of RP and EBRT on CSM risk. RESULTS: Among 146,082 T1-2 stage PCa patients, cardiac disease emerged as the primary cause of death, surpassing PCa itself. Multifactorial COX regression and competing risk regression analyses indicated that local treatments do not increase CSM risk. Further analysis revealed a significant increase in CSM risk for patients undergoing only EBRT compared with those undergoing only RP (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.71, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.96-3.74, P < 0.001), with subsequent PSM adjustment, further confirming a significantly reduced risk in the RP treatment group (HR 0.23, 95% CI 0.13-0.40, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: T1-2 stage PCa patients face a significant risk of CSM, with RP offering a potential advantage over EBRT in reducing this risk. These findings encourage clinicians to comprehensively consider the potential impact on cardiac health when formulating treatment plans, providing crucial guidance for optimizing treatment strategies.

RESUMO

Predator species of animal can absorb plant microRNA that can regulate target gene expression and physiological function across species. The herb Lycium barbarum, a traditional Chinese medicine, has a wide range of antitumor effects. However, there are no reports on the effects of microRNA derived from it on the cross-border regulation of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We performed in vitro and in vivo experiments to explore the role and mechanism of the L. barbarum-derived microRNA miR166a (Lb-miR166a) in cross-border regulation of RCC. Our mRNA sequencing analysis showed that Lb-miR166a regulates the expression of various genes in tumor cells, including 1232 upregulated genes and 581 downregulated genes, which were enriched to 1094 Gene Ontology entries and 43 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways. In vitro cell experiments confirmed that Lb-miR166a can inhibit the proliferation of RCC cells, promote the apoptosis of tumor cells, and inhibit the invasion and metastasis of tumor cells by regulating the expression of related genes. Furthermore, our in vivo tumor-bearing experiment showed that subcutaneous tumor formation volume decreased in Lb-miR166a mice, along with the number of liver metastases. This study elucidates the role and mechanism of Lb-miR166a in RCC treatment (Fig. 1). Our results further mechanistically confirm the antitumor properties of L. barbarum. Our study may contribute to the clinical development of a targeted drug for RCC treatment.

RESUMO

Objective To analyze the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in the patients with snow-white sign of advanced colorectal adenoma (ACA) and explore its clinical significance.Method Western blotting was employed to determine the expression of COX-2 in the adenoma tissue and the normal tissue adjacent to the adenoma tissue (>5 cm away from the distal end of the adenoma tissue) of 40 ACA patients with snow-white sign and 40 ACA patients without snow-white sign. Results The appearance of snow-white sign in ACA patients was associated with patient age (P=0.001) and not associated with sex, smoking history, drinking history, ethnic groups, family history of colorectal cancer, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, fecal occult blood,or tumor markers (all P>0.05).Snow-white sign mainly appeared in the ACA patients with multiple adenomas (P=0.004),large adenomas (P=0.006),adenomas in distal colon (P=0.015),protruding polyps (P=0.044),and late-stage pathology (P=0.010).The occurrence of snow-white sign showed no difference in the ACA patients with different results of Japan NBI Expert Team classification (P=0.502).The expression of COX-2 in the adenoma tissue was higher than that in the adjacent normal tissue in the patients with and without snow-white sign (P<0.001,P=0.004).The patients with snow-white sign had higher expression of COX-2 protein in the adenoma tissue than the patients without snow-white sign (P=0.001).The expression of COX-2 protein in the adjacent healthy tissue had no significant difference between the patients with and without snow-white sign (P=0.603).Conclusions Snow-white sign is more like to appear in the ACA patients with young age, multiple and large adenomas, adenomas in distal colon, protruding polyps, and late-stage pathology. Moreover, the expression of COX-2 in the ACA patients with snow-white sign is significantly higher than that in the ACA patients without snow-white sign. The adults with snow-white sign are prone to cancerization than those without snow-white sign.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Specific IgE (sIgE) testing has become one of the most important tools for diagnosing IgE-mediated food allergy. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Dot-ELISA) have been used to measure sIgE in clinical widely. Light-initiated chemiluminescence assay (LICA) is a new method for measuring allergen-sIgE. We aimed to establish a LICA method for quantitative detection of egg white-sIgE and evaluate its performances. METHODS: The best chemibeads coupling method in detecting egg white-sIgE was selected, and a LICA method for quantitative detection of egg white-sIgE was established. The precision study was performed according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) EP5-A2. Detection capability which contains limit of blank (LoB), limit of detection (LoD), and limit of quantitation (LoQ) was evaluated according to National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China (NHC) WS/T 514-2017. Linear range was evaluated according to CLSI EP6-A. All data were analyzed using SPSS software. RESULTS: Precision contains repeatability and intermediate precision. The CV of repeatability ranged from 2.72% to 7.29%, and the CV of intermediate precision ranged from 4.93% to 8.64%. The LoB, LoD, and LoQ of the assay were 0.000 kUA/L, 0.053 kUA/L, and 0.076 kUA/L. The assay linear range was 0.076-34.125 kUA /L (r = 0.9979 ≥ 0.9900). CONCLUSION: This laboratory-developed LICA method can detect egg white-sIgE, and performance meets clinical requirements. This method shows rapid turnaround cycles and high sensitivity. It can be used as an alternative method for clinical detection of egg white-sIgE.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic significance of two new and a few clinical markers for prostate cancer (PCa) at various prostate volumes (PV). METHODS: The study subjects were divided into two groups. Among them, there were 70 cases in the PV ≤30 ml group (benign prostatic hyperplasia [BPH]: 32 cases, PCa: 38 cases) and 372 cases in the PV > 30 ml group (BPH: 277 cases, PCa: 95 cases). SPSS 26.0 and GraphPad Prism 8.0 were used to construct their receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for diagnosing PCa and calculating their area under the ROC curve (AUC). RESULTS: In the PV ≤30 ml group, the diagnostic parameters based on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) had a decreased diagnostic significance for PCa. In the PV > 30 ml group, PSAD (AUC = 0.709), AVR (AVR = Age/PV, AUC = 0.742), and A-PSAD (A-PSAD = Age×PSA/PV, AUC = 0.736) exhibited moderate diagnostic significance for PCa, which was better than PSA-AV (AUC = 0.672), free PSA (FPSA, AUC = 0.509), total PSA (TPSA, AUC = 0.563), (F/T) PSA (AUC = 0.540), and (F/T)/PSAD (AUC = 0.663). Compared with AVR, A-PSAD exhibited similar diagnostic significance for PCa, but higher than PSA density (PSAD). CONCLUSIONS: Choosing appropriate indicators for different PVs could contribute to the early screening and diagnosis of PCa. The difference in the diagnostic value of two new indicators (A-PSAD and AVR), and PSAD for PCa may require further validation by increasing the sample size.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify parameters with a higher diagnostic value for early screening of prostate cancer (PCa) at different ages. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 294 patients were included and divided into two groups according to the age of patients (≤66 and >66 years). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves of total prostate-specific antigen (TPSA), free PSA (FPSA), (F/T)PSA, PSA density (PSAD), PSA-AV score, the ratio of patients' age to prostate volume (AVR) and (F/T)/PSAD were constructed. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was calculated, and differences in the AUC values among the above-mentioned parameters were compared. RESULTS: There were 121 patients in the ≤66 years age group (benign prostatic hyperplasia BPH, 103 patients; PCa 18 patients) and 173 patients in the >66 years age group (BPH, 100 patients; PCa, 73 patients). In the ≤66 years age group, the AUC value of AVR for PCa diagnosis was the highest; however, there was no statistically significant difference compared with the AUC values of PSAD and (F/T)/PSAD; compared with TPSA, FPSA, (F/T)PSA and PSA-AV, the differences were statistically significant. In the >66 years age group, the AUC values of PSAD and PSA-AV for PCa diagnosis were higher than those of TPSA, FPSA, (F/T)PSA and (F/T)/PSAD, and the difference was statistically significant; however, the difference was not statistically significant when compared with the AUC value of AVR. CONCLUSION: In different age groups, screening indices for PCa diagnosis should be selected according to the age of patients.

RESUMO

This study aimed to analyse the clinical characteristics and risk factors of patients with positive prostate biopsy at 4-20 ng/mL of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), construct a new parameter based on this characteristics and assess its diagnostic value for prostate cancer (PCa). Logistic regression analysis was used to clarify the risk factors of PCa, and a new parameter based on the results was constructed. Compare the diagnostic value of various diagnostic parameters for PCa. Logistic multivariate regression analysis revealed that age (OR, 5.269; 95%CI, 2.762-10.050), comorbid diabetes (OR, 2.437; 95%CI, 1.162-5.111), PSA (OR, 2.462; 95%CI, 1.198-5.059) and prostate volume (PV) (OR, 0.227; 95%CI, 0.100-0.516) are risk factors for PCa. The age, PSA and PV of patients were combined to construct a new parameter, that is A-PSAD = (age × total PSA [TPSA])/PV]. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve(AUC) of A-PSAD (0.728) for PCa diagnosis was higher than the AUCs of TPSA (0.581), free prostate-specific antigen (0.514), (F/T)PSA (0.535) and PSAD (0.696), with significant differences. Age, history of diabetes, TPSA and PV are risk factors for PCa(PSA:4-20ng/mL); in addition, A-PSAD has a moderate diagnostic value for PCa and may become a new indicator for PCa screening.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the predictive value of the ratio of the product of neutrophils and hemoglobin to lymphocytes (NHL) in patients with non-muscular invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively collected clinical and pathological data of patients with NMIBC who underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) at our hospital between 2013 and 2018. The ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes (NLR), the Systemic Immune Inflammation Index (SII), and NHL were obtained based on routine blood settlement within a week before surgery. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the optimal cutoff value of each index, and different groups were grouped accordingly. Kaplan-Meier survival curve and Cox regression model were used to study the factors affecting the prognosis of NMIBC patients. RESULTS: There was significant difference in recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate between the high NLR group and the low NLR group, the high SII group and the low SII group, and the high NHL group and the low NHL group. Cox univariate regression analysis showed that tumor number, tumor size, tumor pathological grade, tumor pathological stage, NLR, SII, and NHL were related to postoperative RFS in patients with NMIBC. The tumor number, tumor pathological grade, SII, and NHL were independent predictors of RFS in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The preoperative clinical inflammatory indexes NLR, SII, and NHL have certain predictive value for postoperative RFS in NMIBC patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Vibegron is a new kind of ß3-adrenergic receptor agonist. We performed a systematic review and pooled analysis to assess the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of Vibegron for treating overactive bladder (OAB). METHODS: MEDLINE, the Cochrane Controlled Trial Register and EMBASE were used to pick out randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of Vibegron in treating OAB. The reference lists of the retrieved articles were also studied. We used RevMan version 5.3.0. to analyze the data. RESULTS: Three high-quality RCTs involving a total of 2120 OAB patients were adopted in the systematic review and pooled analysis. The mean number of micturitions episodes/d (mean difference [MD] = -0.77; 95% confidence interval [CI] = -1.0 to -0.55; P < .00001); the mean number of urgency episodes/d (MD = -0.77; 95% CI = -1.03 to -0.52; P < .00001); mean number of urgency incontinence episodes/d (MD = -0.50; 95% CI = -0.64 to -0.35; P < .00001); mean number of incontinence episodes/d (MD = -0.45; 95% CI = -0.66 to -0.25; P < .0001); and mean volume voided/micturition (MD = 22.22; 95% CI = 17.36 to 27.07, P < .00001) showed that Vibegron was more efficacy in treating OAB than placebo. Dry mouth, drug-related treatment-emergent adverse event (TEAE), serious adverse event (SAE), and discontinuations due to adverse event (AE) suggested that Vibegron was well tolerated. CONCLUSIONS: Our systematic review and pooled analysis demonstrate that Vibegron 75 mg or 100 mg/d statistically significant improved OAB symptoms. The treatment was well-tolerated, with a favorable safety profile.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Quercetin is one of potential antidiabetic substances because of its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. The purpose of this study is to estimate daily quercetin intake and assess the relationship between dietary quercetin intake and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a Chinese population. METHODS: Dietary intake was investigated by a validated 100-item food frequency questionnaire. Daily intakes of quercetin and nutrients were calculated accordingly. T2DM was diagnosed based on the criteria of the American Diabetes Association. Adjusted logistic regression models were used to analyze the relationship between the quartiles of quercetin intake and the prevalence of T2DM. RESULTS: The prevalences of T2DM were 8.35% in men and 4.68% in women. The main food sources of quercetin were apple, orange, and green tea. Daily intake of quercetin was 20.9 ± 2.32 mg/day (mean ± SD). After adjusting for potentially confounding factors, the odds ratios (95% CI) for T2DM across the ascending quartiles of quercetin intake were: 1.00 (reference), 0.75 (0.60-0.95), 0.76 (0.59-0.99), and 0.63 (0.51-0.94). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study showed that quercetin intake was inversely related to the prevalence of T2DM in the Chinese population, suggesting a protective effect of quercetin in the development of T2DM.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid hormones (THs) are primarily responsible for the regulation of energy homeostasis and metabolism. However, few prospective studies have assessed the association between THs and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a general population. We therefore designed a cohort study to examine whether serum TH levels within the reference range are predictive factors for developing MetS in adults. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: A prospective study (n = 6119) was performed in Tianjin, China. Participants without a history of MetS were followed up for 1 to 3 years with a median follow-up duration of 2 years. MEASUREMENTS: Serum free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay. MetS was defined in accordance with the criteria of the American Heart Association scientific statements of 2009. THs, TSH levels and MetS were assessed yearly during the follow-up. Adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the associations between FT3, FT4 and TSH quintiles and MetS. RESULTS: The incidence of MetS was 17.7% (96 per 1000 person-years). In the final multivariate models, the hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for MetS across serum FT3 quintiles were 1.00 (reference), 1.03 (0.84, 1.25), 1.14 (0.94, 1.38), 1.09 (0.90, 1.32) and 1.33 (1.11, 1.61), respectively (P for trend <.01). However, no significant associations between FT4, TSH and MetS were observed. CONCLUSIONS: This population-based prospective cohort study suggests that increased serum FT3 level, rather than FT4 and TSH, is an independent predictor for developing MetS in euthyroid subjects.

RESUMO

AIMS: As an insulin target tissue, skeletal muscle is inversely related to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Serum creatinine originates mainly from creatine in muscle and is considered as a reliable surrogate marker for muscle mass in apparently healthy subjects. It is therefore hypothesized that low serum creatinine could effectively predict increased risk of T2DM. Yet information is scarce regarding the longitudinal relationship between serum creatinine and T2DM. This study aims to investigate this relation in a large general population of both men and women. METHODS: A prospective cohort study (n = 57 587; follow-up range: 1-9 years, mean: 3.57 years, 95% confidence interval: 3.55-3.58 years) was conducted in a general population sample from Tianjin, China. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the relationship between baseline serum creatinine and the risk of developing T2DM (as defined by the American Diabetes Association criteria). RESULTS: During the follow-up period, 2017 subjects developed T2DM. The multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for T2DM incidence across quintiles of serum creatinine were 1.00 (reference), 0.86 (0.75, 0.99), 0.82 (0.72, 0.94), 0.85 (0.74, 0.97), and 0.77 (0.67, 0.89; P for trend <.01). Similar results were observed in both sexes (interaction P = .56). CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that serum creatinine concentration is inversely related to incident T2DM in both men and women. Measuring serum creatinine may assist in the early detection of individuals at high risk of developing T2DM.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Emerging evidence supported that circadian clocks played an important role in the development and progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Bedtime is a strong regulator of circadian rhythms, implying that it may contribute to the onset of NAFLD. However, few studies have examined the association between bedtime and NAFLD. The purpose of the study was to determine whether late bedtime is associated with newly diagnosed NAFLD in an adult population. METHODS: This population-based study was performed in 22 807 participants in Tianjin, China. Bedtime was obtained from a self-administered questionnaire, and NAFLD was diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography. Odds ratios of NAFLD for bedtime categories were estimated with multiple logistic regression models. RESULTS: The prevalence of newly diagnosed NAFLD was 18.8% in the present study. After adjustment for the potential confounders, compared with the reference group (bedtime ≤22:00), the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of NAFLD were 1.18 (1.05-1.32) and 1.42 (1.21-1.68) for bedtime from 22:00 to 24:00 and ≥24:00, respectively. CONCLUSION: Late bedtime was slightly but significantly associated with an increased prevalence of newly diagnosed NAFLD, independently of confounding factors. It is suggested that early bedtime may be beneficial in preventing NAFLD.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Epidemiological studies directly examining the association between habitual yoghurt consumption and mental health remain scarce. The aim of this study is to investigate the association of yoghurt consumption with depressive symptoms in adults. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of 19,596 Chinese adults (mean age 41.2, standard deviation 11.8 years; males, 54.3%). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Dietary intake was obtained through a valid food frequency questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the association between yoghurt consumption and depressive symptoms. A number of potential confounders were adjusted in the model. RESULTS: The prevalence of elevated depressive symptoms was 17.1% (SDS ≥45). The multivariable adjusted odds ratios (95% CI) of having elevated depressive symptoms by increasing levels of yoghurt consumption (1-3 times/week, 4-7 times/week, and  ≥twice/day) were 1.05 (0.96, 1.15), 1.02 (0.91, 1.15), and 2.10 (1.61, 2.73) in comparison with lowest consumption group (

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Excessive consumption of soft drinks is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the association between soft drinks consumption and NAFLD is unclear in non-Caucasian adults with relatively low soft drinks consumption. The aim of this study was to assess the association between soft drinks consumption and NAFLD in Chinese adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 26,790 adults living in Tianjin, China. NAFLD (with elevated alanine aminotransferase [ALT]) was diagnosed by the liver ultrasonography and serum ALT concentrations. Soft drinks consumption was assessed using a validated self-administered food frequency questionnaire, and it was summarized as three categories for analysis: almost never (reference), <1 cup/week, and ≥1 cups/week. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was defined according to the criteria of the American Heart Association scientific statements of 2009. The association between soft drinks consumption and NAFLD was assessed by multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of NAFLD and NAFLD with elevated ALT was 27.1 and 6.5%, respectively. After adjustment for potential confounding variables (including MetS), the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for NAFLD or NAFLD with elevated ALT across soft drinks consumption were 1.00 (reference) for almost never, 1.14 (1.02-1.27) or 1.16 (0.98-1.37) for <1 cup/week, and 1.26 (1.14-1.40) or 1.32 (1.13-1.53) for ≥1 cups/week (both P for trend <0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to demonstrate that soft drinks consumption is associated with NAFLD independent of MetS in Chinese adults with relatively low soft drinks consumption. These results suggest that reducing soft drinks consumption might be beneficial to the prevention of NAFLD.

RESUMO

AIMS: Long-term oral chronic inflammatory process is closely related to systemic inflammation, which is a main mechanism involved in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Tooth loss could reflect the accumulation of oral local inflammation, implying that number of missing teeth may associate with NAFLD. This study evaluated the association between missing teeth and presence of NAFLD in a general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 24,470 adults was carried out from the Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study. The self-reported number of missing teeth (excluding third molars) was recorded and classified into four categories: 0, 1-2, 3-5, and ≥6. The NAFLD was diagnosed by the liver ultrasonography. Associations were analysed by adjusted multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: The multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of NAFLD across the categories of missing teeth were as follows: in males, 1.00 (reference), 1.04 (0.93-1.16), 1.06 (0.90-1.24), and 1.40 (1.09-1.81) (p for trend = 0.04); in females, 1.00 (reference), 0.98 (0.83-1.15), 1.11 (0.90-1.37), and 1.07 (0.77-1.48) (p for trend = 0.45). CONCLUSIONS: The number of missing teeth was associated with a higher presence of NAFLD in males but not females.

RESUMO

Previous studies have demonstrated adverse mental health effects of Pb exposure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between consumption of preserved egg (PE), a high-Pb-containing food and depressive symptoms among adults in China. A sample of 25 213 adults (mean age 41·4 (sd 11·8) years; males, 53·9 %) in Tianjin, China, was studied in a cross-sectional analysis. Dietary intake including PE was assessed using a valid self-administered FFQ. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). The association was estimated by OR using logistic regression models adjusted for multiple confounders. The prevalence of elevated depressive symptoms was 6·6 % (SDS≥50). Compared with the least frequent PE consumption (
