RESUMO

Flexible thermoelectric devices of nanomaterials have shown a great potential for applications in wearable to remotely located electronics with desired shapes and geometries. Continuous powering up the low power flexible electronics is a major challenge. We are reporting a flexible thermoelectric module prepared from silver telluride (Ag2 Te) nanowires (NWs), which are chemically transformed from uniquely synthesized and scalable tellurium (Te) NWs. Conducting Ag2 Te NWs composites have shown an ultralow total thermal conductivity ~0.22 W/mK surpassing the bulk melt-grown Ag2 Te ~1.23 W/mK at ~300 K, which is attributed to the nanostructuring of the material. Flexible thermoelectric device consisting of 4 legs (n-type) of Ag2 Te NWs on polyvinylidene fluoride membrane displays a significant output voltage (Voc ) ~2.3 mV upon human touch and Voc ~18 mV at temperature gradient, ΔT ~50 K, which shows the importance of NWs based flexible thermoelectric devices to power up the low power wearable electronics.

THE PURPOSE OF THE ARTICLE: To identify novel small molecule antagonists of Urotensin II receptor with acceptable pharmacological profile. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Structure-activity-relationship (SAR) studies on 2-{N-[(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy) acetyl]-N-methylamino}-3-pyrrolidinepropanamide series were conducted and shortlisted compounds were synthesized and evaluated in in vitro cell-based assays. Human and mouse Urotensin II receptor overexpressing CHO cells were used for calcium release and radioligand binding assays. Initial molecules in this series had solubility and inter-species variability issue in the calcium release assay. We, therefore, conducted SAR to overcome these 2 issues and molecules with accepted in vitro profile were evaluated further in mouse pressor response model to generate the in vivo proof of concept for UII receptor antagonization. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We report herewith identification of 2-{N-[(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)acetyl]-N-methylamino}-3-pyrrolidinepropanamides series to obtain novel small molecule antagonists of Urotensin II receptor with acceptable pharmacological profile.

Understanding the correlations of both the local and global structures with lattice dynamics is critical for achieving low lattice thermal conductivity (κlat ) in crystalline materials. Herein, we demonstrate local cationic off-centring within the global rock-salt structure of AgSbSe2 by using synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function analysis and unravel the origin of its ultralow κlat ≈0.4 W mK-1 at 300 K. The cations are locally off-centered along the crystallographic ⟨ 100 ⟩ direction by about ≈0.2 Å, which averages out as the rock-salt structure on the global scale. Phonon dispersion obtained by density functional theory (DFT) shows weak instabilities that cause local off-centering distortions within an anharmonic double-well potential. The local structural distortion arises from the stereochemically active 5s2 lone pairs of Sb. Our findings open an avenue for understanding how the local structure influences the phonon transport and facilitates the design of next-generation crystalline materials with tailored thermal properties.

Intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity (κlat ) while maintaining the high carrier mobility (µ) is of the utmost importance for thermoelectrics. Topological insulators (TI) can possess high µ due to the metallic surface states. TIs with heavy constituents and layered structure can give rise to high anharmonicity and are expected to show low κlat . Here, we demonstrate that Bi1.1 Sb0.9 Te2 S (BSTS), which is a 3D bulk TI, exhibits ultra-low κlat of 0.46 Wm-1 K-1 along with high µ of ≈401 cm2  V-1 s-1 . Sound velocity measurements and theoretical calculations suggest that chemical bonding hierarchy and high anharmonicity play a crucial role behind such ultra-low κlat . BSTS possesses low energy optical phonons which strongly couple with the heat carrying acoustic phonons leading to ultra-low κlat . Further, Cl has been doped at the S site of BSTS which increases the electron concentration and reduces the κlat resulting in a promising n-type thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) of ≈0.6 at 573 K.

Fundamental understanding of the correlation between chemical bonding and lattice dynamics in intrinsically low thermal conductive crystalline solids is important to thermoelectrics, thermal barrier coating, and more recently to photovoltaics. Two-dimensional (2D) layered halide perovskites have recently attracted widespread attention in optoelectronics and solar cells. Here, we discover intrinsically ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (κL) in the single crystal of all-inorganic layered Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskite, Cs2PbI2Cl2, synthesized by the Bridgman method. We have measured the anisotropic κL value of the Cs2PbI2Cl2 single crystal and observed an ultralow κL value of ∼0.37-0.28 W/mK in the temperature range of 295-523 K when measured along the crystallographic c-axis. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) analysis of the phonon spectrum uncovers the presence of soft (frequency ∼18-55 cm-1) optical phonon modes that constitute relatively flat bands due to localized vibrations of Cs and I atoms. A further low energy optical mode exists at ∼12 cm-1 that originates from dynamic octahedral rotation around Pb caused by anharmonic vibration of Cl atoms induced by a 3s2 lone pair. We provide experimental evidence for such low energy optical phonon modes with low-temperature heat capacity and temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopic measurements. The strong anharmonic coupling of the low energy optical modes with acoustic modes causes damping of heat carrying acoustic phonons to ultrasoft frequency (maximum ∼37 cm-1). The combined effect of soft elastic layered structure, abundance of low energy optical phonons, and strong acoustic-optical phonon coupling results in an intrinsically ultralow κL value in the all-inorganic layered RP perovskite Cs2PbI2Cl2.

Understanding the mechanism that correlates phonon transport with chemical bonding and solid-state structure is the key to envisage and develop materials with ultralow thermal conductivity, which are essential for efficient thermoelectrics and thermal barrier coatings. We synthesized thallium selenide (TlSe), which is comprised of intertwined stiff and weakly bonded substructures and exhibits intrinsically ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (κL) of 0.62-0.4 W/mK in the range 295-525 K. Ultralow κL of TlSe is a result of its low energy optical phonon modes which strongly interact with the heat carrying acoustic phonons. Low energy optical phonons of TlSe are associated with the intrinsic rattler-like vibration of Tl+ cations in the cage constructed by the chains of (TlSe2)nn-, as evident in low temperature heat capacity, terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, and temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy. Density functional theoretical analysis reveals the bonding hierarchy in TlSe which involves ionic interaction in Tl+-Se while Tl3+-Se bonds are covalent, which causes significant lattice anharmonicity and intrinsic rattler-like low energy vibrations of Tl+, resulting in ultralow κL.

BACKGROUND: Retinal hemorrhages are one of the most important supportive evidences for abusive head trauma (AHT). Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) is highly suited to identify various forms of intracranial hemorrhage in AHT. However its utility in imaging retinal hemorrhage is not well established. OBJECTIVE: SWI is a sensitive sequence for identifying retinal hemorrhage on MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, 26 consecutive infants and young children with a suspected admission diagnosis of AHT underwent indirect ophthalmoscopy and brain MRI protocol for AHT along with SWI. Brain susceptibility-weighted images of 14 age-matched children were used as controls. For detecting retinal hemorrhage, susceptibility-weighted images of patients and controls were reviewed randomly and independently by two neuroradiologists who were blinded to the history and ophthalmology findings. A pediatric ophthalmologist graded the indirect ophthalmoscopy images. RESULTS: A diagnosis of AHT was confirmed in all 26 cases from a multidisciplinary meeting. Indirect ophthalmoscopy images were available in 21 cases. Ophthalmoscopy was positive for retinal hemorrhage in the right eye in 18 cases (85.7%) and in the left eye in 16 cases (76.2%). On SWI, retinal hemorrhage was identified in the right eye in 9/21 cases (42.8%) and in the left eye in 8/21 cases (38.1%) of AHT. Analysis of SWI in 21 cases of AHT demonstrated a sensitivity of 50%, specificity of 100%, positive predictive value of 100% and negative predictive value of 32% for detecting retinal hemorrhage. CONCLUSION: SWI is moderately sensitive and highly specific for identifying retinal hemorrhage in AHT. Further studies are needed to identify steps to improve the efficiency of SWI in detecting retinal hemorrhage.

FimH is a type I fimbrial lectin located at the tip of type-1 pili of Gram-negative uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) guiding its ability to adhere and infect urothelial cells. Accordingly, blocking FimH with small molecule inhibitor is considered as a promising new therapeutic alternative to treat urinary tract infections caused by UPEC. Herein, we report that compounds having the S-glycosidic bond (thiomannosides) had improved metabolic stability and plasma exposures when dosed orally. Especially compound 5h showed the potential to inhibit biofilm formation and also to disrupt the preformed biofilm. And compound 5h showed prophylactic effect in UTI model in mice.

PURPOSE: To assess pediatric ophthalmology-related information on TikTok (ByteDance). METHODS: The 12 most commonly searched terms from the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus website were queried as TikTok hashtags. The top 20 videos for each hashtag were analyzed for views, likes, comments, saves, shares, author status and gender, content, and engagement level ratio (ELR). Subanalysis of the educational videos for quality, understandability and actionability, and medical accuracy using the modified DISCERN (mDISCERN), Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT), and modified Medical Information and Content Index (mMICI) was performed. RESULTS: Analysis of 222 videos revealed a cumulative 191,337,973 views. Patients/families created the most videos (60.4%), followed by optometrists (14.4%), other (laypeople/unknown) (9.0%), ophthalmologists (7.7%), non-ophthalmology physicians (4.5%), and nurses (4.1%). Content was predominantly patient experience (56.8%), followed by educational (25.2%), humor (11.7%), self-promotional (3.6%), procedures (0.9%), other (0.9%), advertisements (0.5%), and career (0.5%). Educational videos had a lower ELR than humorous (3.3 vs 8.2, P < .001) and patient experience (3.3 vs 5.3, P < .001) videos, but more saves than patient experience videos (74 vs 25, P = .009). The mDISCERN scores were greater for videos authored by ophthalmologists (3, P < .001) and optometrists (2.5, P < .001) compared to lay-people (1.5). Ophthalmologist PEMAT understandability scores were greater than non-ophthalmology providers' (95.5% vs 67.4%, P = .002). There was no difference in PEMAT actionability (P = .743) or mMICI scores among the author subgroups (P = .206). CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric ophthalmology content on Tik-Tok ranges in quality and understandability. Additional research is needed to help promote posts created by eyecare providers to ensure evidence-based medical content reaches pediatric patients and their families. PURPOSE: Our study aims to investigate the effect of decreasing distance from the patient to the fixation target on the measurement of strabismus with a known distance-near disparity. METHODS: Strabismus measurements were taken by one pediatric ophthalmologist at our standard distance of 18 feet and compared to those taken at 16, 14, 12, and 10 feet from the fixation target. A clinically meaningful difference was defined as >2.5 prism diopters (PD), since a difference of that magnitude may alter surgical planning. RESULTS: Thirty-nine subjects, including 22 exotropes and 17 esotropes, were included in this study. Mean prism diopter difference (PDD) in the exotrope group at lengths of 16, 14, 12, and 10 feet compared to 18 feet were 1.3 (SD 1.9, range 0-6), 1.3 (SD 2.2, range 0-8), 1.7 (SD 3.2, range 0-14), and 2.8 (SD 4.4, range 0-14), respectively. Among esotropes, the mean PDD at the same distances were 1.1 (SD 1.9, range 0-7), 2.1 (SD 2.6, range 0-7), 3.9 (SD 4.9, range 0-19), and 4.3 (SD 5.1, range 0-19). The percentages of exotropes with a PDD of >2.5 at 16, 14, 12, and 10 feet compared to 18 feet were 13.6% (n = 3), 13.6% (n = 3), 18.2% (n = 4), and 27.3% (n = 6), respectively. In the esotrope group, 11.8% (n = 2), 35.3% (n = 6), 47.1% (n = 8), and 47.1% (n = 8) had a PDD of >2.5 at the same distances, respectively. CONCLUSION: This pilot study is the first to investigate the change in measured angle of strabismus at various non-mirrored distances from the patient to the fixation target. Our methodology defines a framework that could be used in a higher-powered study to further our understanding of the effect of room length on strabismus evaluation.

Nanoscale hybrid inorganic-organic multilayers are attractive for accessing emergent phenomena and properties through superposition of nanomolecularly-induced interface effects for diverse applications. Here, we demonstrate the effects of interfacial molecular nanolayers (MNLs) of organo-diphosphonates on the growth and stability of titania nanolayers during the synthesis of titania/MNL multilayers by sequential atomic layer deposition and single-cycle molecular layer deposition. Interfacial organo-diphosphonate MNLs result in ∼20-40% slower growth of amorphous titania nanolayers and inhibit anatase nanocrystal formation from them when compared to amorphous titania grown without MNLs. Both these effects are more pronounced in multilayers with aliphatic backbone-MNLs and likely related to impurity incorporation and incomplete reduction of the titania precursor indicated by our spectroscopic analyses. In contrast, both MNLs result in two-fold higher titania nanolayer roughness, suggesting that roughening is primarily due to MNL bonding chemistry. Such MNL-induced effects on inorganic nanolayer growth rate, roughening, and stability are germane to realizing high-interface-fraction hybrid nanolaminate multilayers.

A novel set of compounds containing a 4,5-dihydro-5-methylisoxazoline have been successfully designed as VLA-4 receptor antagonists. Compound (14p) had a high receptor binding affinity of 4 nM and also found to be metabolically stable in vitro.

We report on the enhanced thermoelectric properties of selenium (Se) doped bismuth telluride (Bi(2)Te(3-x)Se(x)) nanoplatelet (NP) composites synthesized by the polyol method. Variation of the Se composition within NPs is demonstrated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. While the calculated lattice parameters closely follow the Vegard's law, a discontinuity in the shifting of the high frequency (E(g)(2) and A(1g)(2)) phonon modes illustrates a two mode behavior for Bi(2)Te(3-x)Se(x) NPs. The electrical resistivity (ρ) of spark plasma sintered pellet composites shows metallic conduction for pure Bi(2)Te(3) NP composites and semiconducting behavior for intermediate Se compositions. The thermal conductivity (κ) for all NP composites is much smaller than the bulk values and is dominated by microstructural grain boundary scattering. With temperature dependent electrical and thermal transport measurements, we show that both the thermoelectric power S (-259 µV/K) and the figure of merit ZT (0.54) are enhanced by nearly a factor of 4 for SPS pellets of Bi(2)Te(2.7)Se(0.3) in comparison to Bi(2)Te(3) NP composites. Tentatively, such an enhancement of the thermoelectric performance in nanoplatelet composites is attributed to the energy filtering of low energy electrons by abundant grain boundaries in aligned nanocomposites.

Control of competing parameters such as thermoelectric (TE) power and electrical and thermal conductivities is essential for the high performance of thermoelectric materials. Bulk-nanocomposite materials have shown a promising improvement in the TE performance due to poor thermal conductivity and charge carrier filtering by interfaces and grain boundaries. Consequently, it has become pressingly important to understand the formation mechanisms, stability of interfaces and grain boundaries along with subsequent effects on the physical properties. We report here the effects of the thermodynamic environment during spark plasma sintering (SPS) on the TE performance of bulk-nanocomposites of chemically synthesized Bi(2)Te(2.7)Se(0.3) nanoplatelets. Four pellets of nanoplatelets powder synthesized in the same batch have been made by SPS at different temperatures of 230, 250, 280, and 350 °C. The X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermoelectric, and thermal transport measurements illustrate that the pellet sintered at 250 °C shows a minimum grain growth and an optimal number of interfaces for efficient TE figure of merit, ZT∼0.55. For the high temperature (350 °C) pelletized nanoplatelet composites, the concurrent rise in electrical and thermal conductivities with a deleterious decrease in thermoelectric power have been observed, which results because of the grain growth and rearrangements of the interfaces and grain boundaries. Cross section electron microscopy investigations indeed show significant grain growth. Our study highlights an optimized temperature range for the pelletization of the nanoplatelet composites for TE applications. The results provide a subtle understanding of the grain growth mechanism and the filtering of low energy electrons and phonons with thermoelectric interfaces.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the DYNC1H1 gene have been linked to multiple neurologic syndromes with a multitude of clinical manifestations, both ocular and non-ocular. Previous case reports have outlined various ocular phenotypes, including cataracts of congenital onset, infantile onset, and adult onset with lack of further ophthalmologic detail. CASE PRESENTATION: Our case report outlines, in more detail, a 24-month-old male with a heterozygous mutation in the DYNC1H1 gene who developed a white, intumescent cataract in his left eye and a posterior subcapsular cataract in his right eye with evidence of progressive axial myopia. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the findings outlined in our case we suggest eye exams at regular intervals during early childhood in patients with DYNC1H1 mutations to screen for amblyogenic ocular pathology and potential rapidly developing cataracts.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify changes in ductions following nasal transposition of the split lateral rectus muscle (NTSLR) for treating third nerve palsy. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: A single eye from each patient with third nerve palsy treated with NTSLR with ocular motility measurements. METHODS: Observation of changes in pre- and postoperative ductions. Outcome measures including patient demographic and surgical factors associated with the ability to adduct beyond the midline after NTSLR were evaluated using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 116 patients met the inclusion criteria for this study. The NTSLR significantly decreased abduction (median of 0 limitation [interquartile range (IQR), 0-0] prior to surgery to -4 [IQR, -4 to -3] after NTSLR; p < 0.001), with a corresponding improvement in adduction (median, -5 [IQR, -5 to -4] prior to surgery to -4 [IQR, -4 to -3] after NTSLR; p < 0.001). There was no change in median supraduction or infraduction after NTSLR (p > 0.05). The ability to adduct beyond the midline after NTSLR was demonstrated in 42% of patients. Although not statistically significant, a trend toward a postoperative ability to adduct beyond the midline was seen in patients who had concurrent superior oblique muscle tenotomy (odds ratio [OR] = 5.08; 95% CI, 0.91-40.9) or who were designated with partial rather than complete third nerve palsy (OR = 2.29; 95% CI, 0.82-6.70). CONCLUSIONS: NTSLR improves the horizontal midline positioning of eyes with third nerve palsy. We report on Raman spectroscopy of few quintuple layer topological insulator bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) nanoplatelets (NPs), synthesized by a polyol method. The as-grown NPs exhibit excellent crystalline quality, hexagonal or truncated trigonal morphology, and uniformly flat surfaces down to a few quintuple layers. Both Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy for the first time resolve all four optical phonon modes from individual NPs down to 4 nm, where the out-of-plane vibrational A(1g)(1) mode shows a few wavenumbers red shift as the thickness decreases below ~15 nm. This thickness-dependent red shift is tentatively explained by a phonon softening due to the decreasing of the effective restoring force arising from a decrease of the van der Waals forces between adjacent layers. Quantitatively, we found that the 2D phonon confinement model proposed by Faucet and Campbell cannot explain the red shift values and the line shape of the A(1g)(1) mode, which can be described better by a Breit­Wigner­Fano resonance line shape. Considerable broadening (~17 cm(­1) for six quintuple layers) especially for the in-plane vibrational mode E(g)(2) is identified, suggesting that the layer-to-layer stacking affects the intralayer bonding. Therefore, a significant reduction in the phonon lifetime of the in-plane vibrational modes is probably due to an enhanced electron­phonon coupling in the few quintuple layer regime.

We introduce a portable retinoscopy device designed to allow simultaneous views of the retinoscope's reflex. With built-in Wi-Fi, it allows for viewing from any phone, tablet, or computer. The device easily attaches to a Welch Allyn retinoscope and could facilitate the teaching of retinoscopy for students, ophthalmic technicians, residents, and physicians.

Background: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) ophthalmologic examinations cause stress and pain. Infants' stress and pain can be measured non-invasively using skin conductance (SC) and high frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV), reflecting sympathetic-mediated sweating and parasympathetic activity, respectively. Objectives: To test the utility of SC to detect sympathetic activation during ROP examination, and the contribution of HF-HRV to predict stability post-examination. Methods: In this prospective, single center study, we measured SC continuously pre-, during, and post-examination, and HRV at 24 h pre-ROP examination. Clinical data included stability [apneas, bradycardias, and desaturations (A/B/Ds)], and interventions post-examination. Results: SC increased 56% above baseline during ROP examination (p = 0.001) and remained elevated post-examination (p = 0.02). Post-hoc analysis showed higher illness acuity, represented by need for respiratory support, was associated with lower HF-HRV at 24 h pre-ROP examination (p = 0.001). Linear regression indicated lower HF-HRV at 24 h pre-examination contributed to the need for higher intervention (i.e., stimulation to breathe, oxygen support) particularly among infants with higher illness acuity [F(1, 15) = 5.05, p = 0.04; ß = -1.33, p = 0.04]. Conclusion: ROP examination induced a 2-fold increase in sympathetic activation which remained above baseline in recovery. Also, we propose that the low parasympathetic tone associated with autonomic imbalance contributes to instability and need for higher intervention to assure stabilization with A/B/D events. Our findings provide insight into the underestimation of adverse events associated with ROP examination and identification of infants who may be more vulnerable to potential sequelae following ROP examinations.
