OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the value of deep learning (DL) models based on multimodal ultrasonographic (US) images to quantify RA activity. METHODS: Static greyscale (SGS), dynamic greyscale (DGS), static power Doppler (SPD) and dynamic power Doppler (DPD) US images were collected and evaluated by two expert radiologists according to the EULAR-OMERACT Synovitis Scoring system. Four DL models were developed based on the ResNet-type structure, evaluated on two separate test cohorts, and finally compared with the performance of 12 radiologists with different levels of experience. RESULTS: In total, 1244 images were used for the model training, and 152 and 354 for testing (cohort 1 and 2, respectively). The best-performing models for the scores of 0/1/2/3 were the DPD, SGS, DGS and SPD models, respectively (Area Under the receiver operating characteristic Curve [AUC] = 0.87/0.95/0.74/0.95; no significant differences). All the DL models provided results comparable to the experienced radiologists on a per-image basis (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.239-0.756, P < 0.05). The SPD model performed better than the SGS one on test cohort 1 (score of 0/2/3: AUC = 0.82/0.67/0.95 vs 0.66/0.66/0.75, respectively) and test cohort 2 (score of 0: AUC = 0.89 vs 0.81). The dynamic DL models performed better than the static ones in most of the scoring processes and were more accurate than the most of senior radiologists, especially the DPD model. CONCLUSION: DL models based on multimodal US images allow a quantitative and objective assessment of RA activity. Dynamic DL models in particular have potential value in assisting radiologists to improve the accuracy of RA US-based grading.

Vasohibin-2 (VASH2) is confirmed to be associated with angiogenesis. To investigate the vitreous levels of VASH2 and how VASH2 induces angiogenesis in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), a total of 120 eyes were enrolled in this prospective and randomized controlled study and the vitreous level of VASH2 was quantified by Luminex liquid suspension chip. Vector systems were applied in human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs) for VASH2 gene overexpression, along with interfering lentiviral vectors (VASH2-shRNA) for VASH2 gene silencing. Cell migration, autophagic flux, as well as the expression of α-tubulin, detyrosinated ⍺-tubulin, LC3 II/LC3 I, P62 were detected under normal, VASH2 overexpression, or interference conditions. The level of VASH2 in PDR patients was significantly higher (218.61 ± 30.14 pg/ml) than that in ERM/MH patients (80.78 ± 2.05 pg/ml) (P = 0.001). The migration ability of HRMECs was significantly increased in VASH2 overexpression group, while in the interfering group, the migration ability decreased. VASH2 increased the detyrosination of ⍺-tubulin. The high fluorescence intensity of autophagic flux showed an activation of autophagy in VASH2 overexpression group, which was also confirmed by the increase of LC3 II/LC3 I ratio and the decrease of P62. Collectively, the present study shows in PDR, vitreous level of VASH2 is higher. VASH2 promotes neovascularization by inducing autophagy, suggesting VASH2 could be a new anti-angiogenic drug target for PDR.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate and validate machine-learning predictive models combining computed tomography and clinical data to early predict organ failure (OF) in Hyperlipidemic acute pancreatitis (HLAP). METHODS: Demographics, laboratory parameters and computed tomography imaging data of 314 patients with HLAP from the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University between 2017 and 2021, were retrospectively analyzed. Sixty-five percent of patients (n = 204) were assigned to the training group and categorized as patients with and without OF. Parameters were compared by univariate analysis. Machine-learning methods including random forest (RF) were used to establish model to predict OF of HLAP. Areas under the curves (AUCs) of receiver operating characteristic were calculated. The remaining 35% patients (n = 110) were assigned to the validation group to evaluate the performance of models to predict OF. RESULTS: Ninety-three (45.59%) and fifty (45.45%) patients from the training and the validation cohort, respectively, developed OF. The RF model showed the best performance to predict OF, with the highest AUC value of 0.915. The sensitivity (0.828) and accuracy (0.814) of RF model were both the highest among the five models in the study cohort. In the validation cohort, RF model continued to show the highest AUC (0.820), accuracy (0.773) and sensitivity (0.800) to predict OF in HLAP, while the positive and negative likelihood ratios and post-test probability were 3.22, 0.267 and 72.85%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Machine-learning models can be used to predict OF occurrence in HLAP in our pilot study. RF model showed the best predictive performance, which may be a promising candidate for further clinical validation.

BACKGROUND: Eradicating Helicobacter pylori infection by bismuth quadruple therapy (BQT) is effective. However, the effect of BQT and subsequent fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) on the gut microbiota is less known. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted at a tertiary hospital in China from January 2019 to October 2020, with the primary endpoints the effect of BQT on the gut microbiota and the effect of FMT on the gut microbiota after bismuth quadruple therapy eradication therapy. A 14-day BQT with amoxicillin and clarithromycin was administered to H. pylori-positive subjects, and after eradication therapy, patients received a one-time FMT or placebo treatment. We then collected stool samples to assess the effects of 14-day BQT and FMT on the gut microbiota. 16 s rDNA and metagenomic sequencing were used to analyze the structure and function of intestinal flora. We also used Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS) to evaluate gastrointestinal symptom during treatment. RESULTS: A total of 30 patients were recruited and 15 were assigned to either FMT or placebo groups. After eradication therapy, alpha-diversity was decreased in both groups. At the phylum level, the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes decreased, while Proteobacteria increased. At the genus level, the abundance of beneficial bacteria decreased, while pathogenic bacteria increased. Eradication therapy reduced some resistance genes abundance while increased the resistance genes abundance linked to Escherichia coli. While they all returned to baseline by Week 10. Besides, the difference was observed in Week 10 by the diarrhea score between two groups. Compared to Week 2, the GSRS total score and diarrhea score decreased in Week 3 only in FMT group. CONCLUSIONS: The balance of intestinal flora in patients can be considerably impacted by BQT in the short term, but it has reverted back to baseline by Week 10. FMT can alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms even if there was no evidence it promoted restoration of intestinal flora.

Exploiting a photocatalyst with high stability and excellent activity for Cr(VI) reduction under mild conditions is crucial yet challenging. Herein, the rigid aromatic multicarboxylate ligand with chromophore anthracene was selected to coordinate with multivalent metal ion manganese and to obtain a stable two-dimensional (2D) Mn-based metal-organic framework (MOF), LCUH-120, which can efficiently and quickly convert Cr(VI) into Cr(III) under light without the need for any additional photosensitizer. The efficient photosensitive anthracene group serves as a photosensitizer center and multivalent Mn(II) ion as a photocatalyst center in LCUH-120, and the conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) can be realized completely in just 40 min. Specifically, the rate constant (k) and reduction rate of the Cr(VI) photocatalytic reaction can be high up to 0.134 min-1 and 2.50 mgCr(VI) g-1cata min-1 in an acidic environment (pH = 2), respectively. Compared to our previously reported three-dimensional (3D) Sm-MOF, LCUH-120 exhibits a significantly higher catalytic reaction rate, which might be ascribed to the fact that the photocatalyst center Mn node can improve the rate of electron transfer and promote the separation of holes and photogenerated electrons. In an acidic environment, the reaction mechanism can be verified through various contrast experiments and theoretical simulations.

Retinal development is initiated by multipotent retinal progenitor cells, which undergo several rounds of cell divisions and subsequently terminal differentiation. Retinal regeneration is usually considered as the recapitulation of retinal development, which share common mechanisms underlying the cell cycle re-entry of adult retinal stem cells and the differentiation of retinal neurons. However, how proliferative retinal progenitor cells perform a precise transition to postmitotic retinal cell types during the process of development and regeneration remains elusive. It is proposed that both the intrinsic and extrinsic programming are involved in the transcriptional regulation of the spatio-temporal fate commitment. Epigenetic modifications and the regulatory mechanisms at both DNA and chromatin levels are also postulated to play an important role in the timing of differentiation of specific retinal cells. In the present review, we have summarized recent knowledge of epigenetic regulation that underlies the commitment of retinal progenitor cells in the settings of retinal development and regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are used extensively as flame retardants and plasticizers. Laboratory studies have shown that OPEs exhibit osteotoxicity by inhibiting osteoblast differentiation; however, little is known about how OPEs exposure is associated with bone health in humans. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the association between OPEs exposure and bone mineral density (BMD) in adults in the United States using data from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS: Multivariate linear regression models were used to assess the association between concentrations of individual OPE metabolites and BMDs. We also used the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and quantile g-computation (qgcomp) models to estimate joint associations between OPE mixture exposure and BMDs. All the analyses were stratified according to gender. RESULTS: A total of 3546 participants (median age, 40 years [IQR, 30-50 years]; 50.11% male) were included in this study. Five urinary OPE metabolites with a detection rate of > 50% were analyzed. After adjusting for the potential confounders, OPE metabolite concentrations were associated with decreased total-body BMD and lumbar spine BMD in males, although some associations only reached significance for bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCPP), dibutyl phosphate (DBUP), and bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (BCEP) (ß = -0.013, 95% CI: -0.026, -0.001 for BCPP and total-body BMD; ß = -0.022, 95% CI: -0.043, -0.0001 for DBUP and lumbar spine BMD; ß=-0.018, 95% CI: -0.034, -0.002 for BCEP and lumbar spine BMD). OPE mixture exposure was also inversely associated with BMD in males, as demonstrated in the BMKR and qgcomp models. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides preliminary evidence that urinary OPE metabolite concentrations are inversely associated with BMD. The results also suggested that males were more vulnerable than females. However, further studies are required to confirm these findings.

To enhance the synchronous detection of the horizontal and vertical positions of the torch in swing arc narrow gap welding, a torch pose detection (TPD) method is proposed. This approach utilizes passive visual sensing to capture images of the arc on the groove sidewall, using advanced image processing methods to extract and fit the arc contour. The coordinates of the arc contour center point and the highest point are determined through the arc contour fitting line. The torch center position is calculated from the average horizontal coordinates of the arc contour centers in adjacent welding images, while the height position is determined from the vertical coordinate of the arc's highest point. Experimental validation in both variable and constant groove welding conditions demonstrated the TPD method's accuracy within 0.32 mm for detecting the torch center position. This method eliminates the need to construct the wire centerline, which was a requirement in previous approaches, thereby reducing the impact of wire straightness on detection accuracy. The proposed TPD method successfully achieves simultaneous detection of the torch center and height positions, laying the foundation for intelligent detection and adaptive control in swing arc narrow gap welding.

Drosophila spermatogenesis involves the renewal of germline stem cells, meiosis of spermatocytes, and morphological transformation of spermatids into mature sperm. We previously demonstrated that Ocnus (ocn) plays an essential role in spermatogenesis. The ValRS-m (Valyl-tRNA synthetase, mitochondrial) gene was down-regulated in ocn RNAi testes. Here, we found that ValRS-m-knockdown induced complete sterility in male flies. The depletion of ValRS-m blocked mitochondrial behavior and ATP synthesis, thus inhibiting the transition from spermatogonia to spermatocytes, and eventually, inducing the accumulation of spermatogonia during spermatogenesis. To understand the intrinsic reason for this, we further conducted transcriptome-sequencing analysis for control and ValRS-m-knockdown testes. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between these two groups were selected with a fold change of ≥2 or ≤1/2. Compared with the control group, 4725 genes were down-regulated (dDEGs) and 2985 genes were up-regulated (uDEGs) in the ValRS-m RNAi group. The dDEGs were mainly concentrated in the glycolytic pathway and pyruvate metabolic pathway, and the uDEGs were primarily related to ribosomal biogenesis. A total of 28 DEGs associated with mitochondria and 6 meiosis-related genes were verified to be suppressed when ValRS-m was deficient. Overall, these results suggest that ValRS-m plays a wide and vital role in mitochondrial behavior and spermatogonia differentiation in Drosophila.

Owing to their special structure and excellent physical and chemical properties, conducting polymers have attracted increasing attention in materials science. In recent years, tremendous efforts have been devoted to improving the comprehensive performance of conducting polymers by using the technique of "doping." Spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPBs) bearing polyelectrolyte chains grafted densely to the surface of core particles have the potential to be novel dopant of conducting polymers not only because of their spherical structure, high grafting density and high charge density, but also due to the possibility of their being applied in printed electronics. This review first presents a summary of the general dopants of conducting polymers. Meanwhile, conducting polymers doped with spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPBs) is highlighted, including the preparation, characterization, performance and doping mechanism. It is demonstrated that comprehensive performance of conducting polymers has improved with the addition of SPBs, which act as template and dopant in the synthesis of composites. Furthermore, the applications and future developments of conductive composites are also briefly reviewed and proposed, which would draw more attention to this field.

Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy is highly effective in inducing complete remission in haematological malignancies. Severe cytokine release syndrome (CRS) is the most significant and life-threatening adverse effect of this therapy. This multi-centre study was conducted at six hospitals in China. The training cohort included 87 patients with multiple myeloma (MM), an external validation cohort of 59 patients with MM and another external validation cohort of 68 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) or non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The levels of 45 cytokines on days 1-2 after CAR-T cell infusion and clinical characteristics of patients were used to develop the nomogram. A nomogram was developed, including CX3CL1, GZMB, IL4, IL6 and PDGFAA. Based on the training cohort, the nomogram had a bias-corrected AUC of 0.876 (95% CI = 0.871-0.882) for predicting severe CRS. The AUC was stable in both external validation cohorts (MM, AUC = 0.907, 95% CI = 0.899-0.916; ALL/NHL, AUC = 0.908, 95% CI = 0.903-0.913). The calibration plots (apparent and bias-corrected) overlapped with the ideal line in all cohorts. We developed a nomogram that can predict which patients are likely to develop severe CRS before they become critically ill, improving our understanding of CRS biology, and may guide future cytokine-directed therapies.

Pathological scarring is the greatest challenge after injury. Exosome from adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells has been reported effective to improve hypertrophic scar. This study focused on the possible mechanisms during this process. Exosomes from adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells were extracted first. Hypertrophic scar tissue and paired normal skin tissue were collected from patients. Mice skin incision model and fibroblasts model were established. TGF-ß1 was used to stimulate fibroblasts to myofibroblasts transdifferentiation. It was found that exosomes injection could decrease collagen sediment after wound healing. During which, the expression of microRNA-181a decreased. Further, we found that expression of microRNA-181a in scar tissue was higher than in normal skin. Then hypertrophic scar-derived fibroblasts were used for in vitro study. It was found that similar to the use of exosomes, microRNA-181a inhibitor decreased the expression of collagen and α-SMA. While microRNA-181a mimics suppressed the effects of exosomes. During fibroblast to myofibroblast trans-differentiation, level of microRNA-181a well as levels of scar-related molecules also decreased with the use of exosomes and vice versa. SIRT1 was confirmed one of the downstream targets of microRNA-181a. Suppression of SIRT1 led to diminished effects of exosomes in hypertrophic scar derived fibroblasts. In mice skin incision model, injection of SIRT1 inhibitor led to increased collagen synthesis. In conclusion, exosomes from Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells are promising to antagonize scarring through the regulation of microRNA-181a/SIRT1 axis.

BACKGROUND: According to the Maastricht VI/Florence consensus report, potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CAB) may improve Helicobacter pylori eradication treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 213 H. pylori treatment-naive patients aged between 18 and 70 years were treated with two regimens. The two regimens are VDT: 20 mg vonoprazan twice a day and 1 g amoxicillin three times daily and EDT: 20 mg esomeprazole four times a day and 750 mg amoxicillin four times daily. 13 C-urea breath tests were used to evaluate eradication rate 4-6 weeks after treatment. Based on propensity score matching (PSM), this retrospective study analyzed the eradication rates, adverse events (AEs), compliance, and antibiotic resistance rates in VDT and EDT groups. RESULTS: On intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis, the eradication rate in VDT group (89.0%; 95% CI 81.7-96.3) was non-inferior to that in EDT group (87.7%; 95% CI 80.1-95.3; p = 0.796). The corresponding per-protocol (PP) eradication rates were 94.1% (95% CI 88.4-99.8) and 92.8% (95% CI 86.7-98.9; p = 1.000), respectively. There were no significant between-group differences with respect to compliance or incidence of AEs. CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy and safety of 14-day VDT and EDT were comparable. Therefore, 14-day VDT or EDT may be recommended for the first-line treatment of H. pylori infection.

BACKGROUND: Potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CAB) are recommended for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections, but dual therapy of P-CAB with amoxicillin has been poorly studied. The current study compared the efficacy, adverse reactions, compliance, and effects on gut microbiota of 14-day vonoprazan-amoxicillin (VA) dual therapy with esomeprazole, bismuth potassium citrate, amoxicillin, and metronidazole (EBAM) quadruple therapy in treatment-naive patients with H. pylori. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a multicenter, open-label, randomized, and controlled, non-inferiority study. Patients (n = 194) enrolled from six centers were randomly divided into either the VA or EBAM group. H. pylori eradication was determined using 13 C urea breath tests (UBT) 4-6 weeks post-treatment. Fecal samples were collected, and gut microbial populations were analyzed by 16S rDNA and metagenomic sequencing technology. RESULTS: Eradication rates of H. pylori in the VA and EBAM groups were 88.7% and 91.8%, respectively, according to intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis; 95.6% and 96.7% with per-protocol (PP) analysis; and 94.5% and 96.7% with modified ITT (mITT) analysis (all p > 0.05). The incidence of adverse reactions in the VA group was significantly lower compared to the EBAM group, and compliance within both groups was good. There was no difference in α-diversity or microbial composition in the VA and EBAM groups at one-month post-treatment compared to baseline, except for a markedly reduced abundance of Bacteroides in the EBAM group. CONCLUSION: VA therapy achieved excellent eradication rates with low adverse reactions, good compliance, and little impact on gut microbiota. VA therapy should be recommended as a first-line treatment against H. pylori.

The stopping power of energetic He ions traversing an Al film is studied by combining the time-dependent density-functional theory method with molecular dynamics simulations. We investigated the dependence of the semicore electron excitation of the Al film on the projectile's trajectory and its charge state. Our results show that for the off-channeling trajectories the semicore electrons contribute significantly to the stopping power of the Al film as the He+ ion velocity exceeds 1.0 a.u, and in contrast, it is negligible for the channeling trajectories. Most importantly, we found two unexpected effects of semicore electrons on the stopping power in helium-irradiated aluminum nanosheets, i.e., (1) the semicore electrons can contribute to the energy loss for both high and low energy projectiles under the off-channeling trajectory; (2) as the projectile velocity increases from 0.4 a.u. to 2.0 a.u. although semicore electron excitation (including transition in the target, ionization away from the target and transfer to the projectile ion) of the target atom is gradually inhibited, the influence of semicore electrons on valence electron excitation is gradually enhanced. Our finding allows us to gain new insights into the stopping of ions in metals.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reserve is a modifiable factor that could prevent cognitive decline in patients with cancer. The Cognitive Reserve Assessment Scale in Health (CRASH) is an instrument used to assess cognitive reserve. This study aims to develop and examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the CRASH for patients with cancer. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 167 cancer patients from four wards of two hospitals in China. Thirty-one patients were re-assessed to examine the test-retest reliability. Four translators and three reviewers developed the Chinese version of the scale. We assessed its structural validity, concurrent validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, measurement error, and floor/ceiling effects. RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analysis showed a good model fit with the four-factor structure of the original CRASH. The CRASH scores were statistically significantly associated with neuropsychological test scores, indicating sufficient concurrent validity. The internal consistency was acceptable, except for leisure activities, with standardized Cronbach's alphas (0.64-0.94) and standardized Omega (0.66-0.95). There was excellent test-retest reliability, with a high intraclass correlation coefficient (0.914-0.993) of total scores and scores for each domain. The measurement error was acceptable, and no floor or ceiling effects were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The Chinese version of the CRASH is a valid and reliable instrument to assess cognitive reserve in patients with cancer. Moreover, cognitive reserve measured by the CRASH was associated with low cognitive performance in cancer patients.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical outcomes of an optimized method to clearly remove the subretinal proliferative tissue by transscleral puncture into the subretinal space in patients with grade C proliferative vitreoretinopathy without inducing retinal injury. METHODS: This was a prospective clinical observation study. Eight consecutive patients who had undergone optimized vitrectomy surgery for retinal detachment complicated by grade C proliferative vitreoretinopathy were investigated. Subretinal proliferation was cleared by adding one additional scleral 23-gauge trocar under the detached retina at 9 mm to 10 mm from the limbus. After the sclera is pierced, the puncture knife changed its direction without touching the retina. 23-G intraocular forceps were used to remove the proliferation strand or membrane through the puncture channel. RESULTS: Retinal reattachment was achieved in each case without a retinotomy. The mean best-corrected visual acuity was improved within the first 1 month ( P = 0.039) and remained stable at the following phase. There were no postoperative complications, such as reoccurrence of retinal detachment or proliferative vitreoretinopathy. No postoperative hemorrhage or hypotension was observed. CONCLUSION: The satisfying results demonstrated the feasibility of this cost-effective, easy-to-follow, transscleral vitrectomy method in treating retinal detachment with grade C proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a chronic liver disease caused by fat deposition in the liver of humans and mammals, while fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) is a fatty liver disease in laying hens which can increase the mortality and cause severe economic losses to the laying industry. Increasing evidence has shown a close relationship between the occurrence of fatty liver disease and the disruption of mitochondrial homeostasis. Studies have proven that taurine can regulate hepatic fat metabolism, reduce hepatic fatty deposition, inhibit oxidative stress, and alleviate mitochondrial dysfunction. However, the mechanisms by which taurine regulates mitochondrial homeostasis in hepatocytes need to be further studied. In this study, we determined the effects and mechanisms of taurine on high-energy low-protein diet-induced FLHS in laying hens and in cultured hepatocytes in free fatty acid (FFA)-induced steatosis. The liver function, lipid metabolism, antioxidant capacity, mitochondrial function, mitochondrial dynamics, autophagy, and biosynthesis were detected. The results showed impaired liver structure and function, mitochondrial damage and dysfunction, lipid accumulation, and imbalance between mitochondrial fusion and fission, mitochondrial autophagy, and biosynthesis in both FLHS hens and steatosis hepatocytes. Taurine administration can significantly inhibit the occurrence of FLHS, protect mitochondria in hepatocytes from disease induced by lipid accumulation and FFA, up-regulate the expression levels of Mfn1, Mfn2, Opa1, LC3I, LC3II, PINK1, PGC-1α, Nrf1, Nrf2, and Tfam, and down-regulate the expression levels of Fis1, Drp1, and p62. In conclusion, taurine can protect laying hens from FLHS through the regulation of mitochondrial homeostasis, including the regulation of mitochondrial dynamics, autophagy, and biosynthesis.

The recovery of phosphorus (P) through vivianite crystallization offers a promising approach for resource utilization in wastewater treatment plants. However, this process encounters challenges in terms of small product size and low purity. The study aimed to assess the feasibility of using quartz sand as a seed material to enhance P recovery and vivianite crystal characteristics from anaerobic fermentation supernatant. Various factors, including seed dosage, seed size, Fe/P ratio, and pH, were systematically tested in batch experiments to assess their influence. Results demonstrated that the effect of seed enhancement on vivianite crystallization was more pronounced under higher seed dosages, smaller seed sizes, and lower pH or Fe/P ratio. The addition of seeds increased P recovery by 4.43% in the actual anaerobic fermentation supernatant and also augmented the average particle size of the recovered product from 19.57 to 39.28 µm. Moreover, introducing quartz sand as a seed material effectively reduced co-precipitation, leading to a notable 12.5% increase in the purity of the recovered vivianite compared to the non-seeded process. The formation of an ion adsorption layer on the surface of quartz sand facilitated crystal attachment and growth, significantly accelerating the vivianite crystallization rate and enhancing P recovery. The economic analysis focused on chemical costs further affirmed the economic viability of using quartz sand as a seed material for P recovery through vivianite crystallization, which provides valuable insights for future research and engineering applications.

Vivianite crystallization has been regarded as a suitable option for recovering phosphorus (P) from P-containing wastewater. However, the presence of humic substances (HS) would inevitably affect the formation of vivianite crystals. Therefore, the influences of HS on vivianite crystallization and the changes in the harvested vivianite crystals were investigated in this study. The results suggested the inhibition effect of 70 mg/L HS on vivianite crystallization reached 12.24%, while it could be attenuated by increasing the pH and Fe/P ratio of the solution. Meanwhile, the addition of HS altered the size, purity, and morphology of recovered vivianite crystals due to the blockage of the growth sites on the crystal surface. Additionally, the formation of phosphate ester group, hydrogen bonding, and COOH-Fe2+ complexes are the potential mechanisms of HS interaction with vivianite crystals. The results obtained herein will help to elucidate the underlying mechanism of HS on vivianite crystallization from P-containing wastewater.
