RESUMO

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light, possessing an infinite-dimensional degree of freedom, holds significant potential to enhance the capacity of optical communication and information processing in both classical and quantum regimes. Despite various methods developed to accurately measure OAM modes, the probing limit of the highest-order OAM remains an open question. Here, we report an accurate recognition of superhigh-order OAM using a convolutional neural network approach with an improved ResNeXt architecture, based on conjugated interference patterns. A type of hybrid beam carrying double OAM modes is utilized to provide more controllable degrees of freedom for greater recognition of the OAM modes. Our contribution advances the OAM recognition limit from manual counting to machine learning. Results demonstrate that, within our optical system, the maximum recognizable OAM modes exceed l = ±690 with an accuracy surpassing 99.93%, the highest achieved by spatial light modulator to date. Enlarging the active area of the CCD sensor extends the number of recognizable OAM modes to 1300, constrained only by the CCD resolution limit. Additionally, we explore the identification of fractional high-order OAM modes with a resolution of 0.1 from l = ±600.0 to l = ±600.9, achieving a high accuracy of 97.86%.

RESUMO

Multiplexing orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes enable high-capacity optical communication. However, the highly similar speckle patterns of adjacent OAM modes produced by strong mode coupling in common fibers prevent the utility of OAM channel demultiplexing. In this paper, we propose a machine learning-supported fractional OAM-multiplexed data transmission system to sort highly scattered data from up to 32 multiplexed OAM channels propagating through a commercial multi-mode fiber parallelly with an accuracy of >99.92%, which is the largest bit number of OAM superstates reported to date (to the best of our knowledge). Here, by learning limited samples, unseen OAM superstates during the training process can be predicted precisely, which reduces the explosive quantity of the dataset. To verify its application, both gray and colored images, encoded by the given system, have been successfully transmitted with error rates of <0.26%. Our work might provide a promising avenue for high-capacity OAM optical communication in scattering environments.

RESUMO

Plant-based co-production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and seed oil has the potential to create a viable domestic source of feedstocks for renewable fuels and plastics. PHAs, a class of biodegradable polyesters, can replace conventional plastics in many applications while providing full degradation in all biologically active environments. Here we report the production of the PHA poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] (PHB) in the seed cytosol of the emerging bioenergy crop Camelina sativa engineered with a bacterial PHB biosynthetic pathway. Two approaches were used: cytosolic localization of all three enzymes of the PHB pathway in the seed, or localization of the first two enzymes of the pathway in the cytosol and anchoring of the third enzyme required for polymerization to the cytosolic face of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The ER-targeted approach was found to provide more stable polymer production with PHB levels up to 10.2% of the mature seed weight achieved in seeds with good viability. These results mark a significant step forward towards engineering lines for commercial use. Plant-based PHA production would enable a direct link between low-cost large-scale agricultural production of biodegradable polymers and seed oil with the global plastics and renewable fuels markets.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite improved surgical techniques, anastomotic leakage is still a serious complication that can occur after colon cancer resection, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for anastomotic leakage after colon cancer surgery, provide a theoretical basis for reducing its occurrence, and guide the practice of clinicians. METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed, Ovid, Web of Science and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases was conducted by using a combination of subject terms and free words for online searches. The databases were searched from their inception to 31 March 2022, and all cross-sectional, cohort or case‒control studies examining the risk factors for the development of anastomotic fistula after surgery for colon cancer were identified. RESULT: A total of 2133 articles were searched for this study, and 16 publications were ultimately included, all of which were cohort studies. A total of 115,462 subjects were included, and a total of 3959 cases of anastomotic leakage occurred postoperatively, with an incidence of 3.4%. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used for evaluation. Male sex (OR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.29-1.46, P < 0.00001), BMI (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.00-1.08, P = 0.03), diabetes (OR = 2.80, 95% CI: 1.81-4.33, P < 0.00001), combined lung disease (OR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.15-1.42, P < 0.00001), anaesthesia ASA score (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.24-1.46, P < 0.00001), ASA class ≥ III (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.22-1.47, P < 0.00001), emergency surgery (OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.11-1.55, P = 0.001), open surgery (OR = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.69-2.24, P < 0.00001) and type of surgical resection (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.12-1.61, P = 0.002) are risk factors for anastomotic leakage after colon cancer surgery. There is still a lack of strong evidence on whether age (OR = 1.00, 95% CI: 0.99-1.01, P = 0.36) and cardiovascular disease (OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 0.94-1.47, P = 0.16) are factors influencing the occurrence of anastomotic leakage after colon cancer surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Male sex, BMI, obesity, coexisting pulmonary disease, anaesthesia ASA score, emergency surgery, open surgery and type of resection were risk factors for anastomotic leakage after colon cancer surgery. The effect of age and cardiovascular disease on postoperative anastomotic leakage in patients with colon cancer needs further study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) is a common neurologic emergency with high morbidity and mortality. This single center study is aimed to assess changes of serum biochemical biomarkers after seizure, and their associations with the development of CSE. METHODS: From January 2015 to October 2016, a total of 57 CSE patients, and 30 healthy controls without central nervous system diseases were enrolled in Children's Hospital of Soochow University. CSE patients were further divided into viral encephalitis (VEN, 13 cases), primary generalized epilepsy (PGE, 30 cases), and complex febrile seizures (CFS, 14 cases). The levels of serum biochemical biomarkers were measured using the corresponding commercial ELISA kits. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the associations between these biomarkers and diseases. RESULTS: At the 1st and 4th day of CSE, neuron-specific enolase (NSE; 1st day: 20.553 ± 5.360, 4th day: 10.094 ± 3.426) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF; 1st day: 153.504 ± 31.246, 4th day: 138.536 ± 25.221) in the CSE group were increased compared to the control (NSE: 6.138 ± 1.941; VEGF: 119.210 ± 31.681). Both the levels of S-100 calcium binding protein B (S-100B; 1st day: 0.738 ± 0.391) and C-reactive protein (CRP; 1st day: 11.128 ± 12.066) were elevated at 1st day of CSE (S-100B: 0.387 ± 0.040; CRP: 3.915 ± 2.064). For glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), it was remarkably upregulated at 4th day of CSE (3.998 ± 1.211). NSE (P = 0.000), S-100B (P = 0.000), CRP (P = 0.011), and VEGF (P = 0.000) at 1st day of CSE, and NSE (P = 0.000), VEGF (P = 0.005), and GFAP (P = 0.000) at 4th day of CSE were significantly associated with the occurrence of CSE. Besides, NSE (P = 0.002), S-100B (P = 0.001), and VEGF (P = 0.002) at 4th day of CSE were significantly associated with VEN. CONCLUSIONS: The levels of serum NSE, S-100B, CRP, VEGF, and GFAP are associated with CSE.

RESUMO

Mutations in syntaxin-binding protein 1, STXBP1 (also known as MUNC18-1), are linked to multiple neurodevelopmental disorders, including severe early-onset epileptic encephalopathies (EOEEs). A de novo nonsense mutation of STXBP1 (c. 863G > A, p. W288X) was found in a patient diagnosed with EOEE at the age of 17 days. The electroencephalogram (EEG) showed sharp waves and spikes, while brain magnetic resonance imaging was normal. We generated a zebrafish EOEE model by overexpressing mutant STXBP1(W288X) and studied the behavioral changes further to understand the mechanism of W288X mutation in epileptogenesis. In addition, effective antiepileptic drugs were screened in the zebrafish model. Zebrafish STXBP1 homologs were highly conserved and prominently expressed in the larval zebrafish brain. The Tg(hSTXBP1W288X) zebrafish larvae exhibited hyperactivity compared with the wild-type (WT) controls. The expression of STXBP1 decreased during the development course from 1 to 5 days post fertilization. Spontaneous seizures and increased c-fos expression were observed in the mutant zebrafish larvae. The susceptibility of Tg(hSTXBP1W288X) zebrafish to pentylenetetrazol challenge also dramatically increased. Levetiracetam, clonazepam, and topiramate showed antiepileptic effects in the Tg(hSTXBP1W288X) larvae to different extents. Our findings in the newly generated mutant line of zebrafish suggested that zebrafish recapitulated clinical phenotypes associated with human STXBP1 mutation, which provided an appropriate in vivo model for epilepsy research.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Children with epilepsy exhibit a significantly higher risk for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is often associated with lower quality of life. In this study, we aimed to identify molecular mechanisms associated with both epilepsy and ADHD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gene expression profiles of GSE12457 and GSE47752 were downloaded from the gene expression omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were separately screened in epilepsy and ADHD samples and compared with controls. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) was used to identify candidate modules associated with the two disorders. Functional annotation and analysis of hub genes and molecular complex detection (MCODE) was also performed. RESULTS: Three modules closely related to epilepsy and ADHD were screened using WGCNA; DEGs in this module were involved in the synaptic vesicle cycle, axon and neuron regeneration, and neurotransmission. The Dlg4 and Vamp2 genes were selected as common candidate factors in epilepsy and ADHD pathogenesis. CONCLUSION: Dlg4 and Vamp2 could play essential roles in comorbidity between epilepsy and ADHD.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is induced by obstruction of the upper airway, which can raise multiple health risks. This study is designed to reveal the key genes involved in OSA. METHODS: GSE38792 was extracted from Gene Expression Omnibus database, including ten visceral adipose tissues from OSA patients and eight visceral adipose tissues from normal controls. Differential expression analysis was conducted using limma package, and then the functions of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were analyzed using DAVID database, followed by protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, and integrated regulatory network analysis was performed using Cytoscape software. RESULTS: A total of 368 DEGs (176 upregulated and 192 downregulated) were identified in OSA samples. Epstein-Barr virus infection (involving IL10RB, MAPK9, and MAPK10) and olfactory transduction were the main pathways separately enriched for the upregulated genes and the downregulated genes. After the PPI network was built, the top ten network nodes (such as TXN) were selected according to node degrees. Two significant PPI network modules were identified. Moreover, the integrated regulatory network was constructed. CONCLUSION: IL10RB, MAPK9, MAPK10, and TXN might function in the pathogenesis of OSA.

RESUMO

The rapid assessment of metabolic engineering strategies in plants is aided by crops that provide simple, high throughput transformation systems, a sequenced genome, and the ability to evaluate the resulting plants in field trials. Camelina sativa provides all of these attributes in a robust oilseed platform. The ability to perform field evaluation of Camelina is a useful, and in some studies essential benefit that allows researchers to evaluate how traits perform outside the strictly controlled conditions of a greenhouse. In the field the plants are subjected to higher light intensities, seasonal diurnal variations in temperature and light, competition for nutrients, and watering regimes dictated by natural weather patterns, all which may affect trait performance. There are difficulties associated with the use of Camelina. The current genetic resources available for Camelina pale in comparison to those developed for the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana; however, the sequence similarity of the Arabidopsis and Camelina genomes often allows the use of Arabidopsis as a reference when additional information is needed. Camelina's genome, an allohexaploid, is more complex than other model crops, but the diploid inheritance of its three subgenomes is straightforward. The need to navigate three copies of each gene in genome editing or mutagenesis experiments adds some complexity but also provides advantages for gene dosage experiments. The ability to quickly engineer Camelina with novel traits, advance generations, and bulk up homozygous lines for small-scale field tests in less than a year, in our opinion, far outweighs the complexities associated with the crop.

RESUMO

AIM OF THE STUDY: To assess the recurrence rate after the first spontaneous epileptic seizure in pediatric patients, and determine the related risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 190 infants (aged between one month and three years) admitted after first spontaneous epileptic seizure to Soochow University Affiliated Children's Hospital between April 2009 and April 2011 were retrospectively analyzed; patients were followed up until April 2014. The recurrence rate and risk factors of recurrence were analyzed based on central nervous system imaging data (computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging), electroencephalogram (EEG) and developmental quotient assessment. RESULTS: Of the 190 infants, 11 cases (5.79%) were lost to follow-up. The cumulative recurrence rate of spontaneous epileptic seizure after five years was 52%. A total of 82% recurrence cases occurred within the first year. Age > 24 months (odds ratio (OR) = 0.498༌95% confidence interval (CI): 0.285-0.869) was an independent protective factor, while symptomatic seizure (OR = 1.624, 95% CI: 1.020-2.587), seizure during sleep (OR = 2.779, 95% CI: 1.757-4.397) and epileptic discharge in EEG (OR=3.269, 95% CI: 2.049-5.217) were independent risk factors. CONCLUSION: Recurrence rate is high in infants after the first spontaneous epileptic seizure, and recurrence is more likely to occur within one year.

RESUMO

In order to study the function of peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in cassava resistance to spider mites, we tested the changes of transcription levels and activities of these two protective enzymes in both cassava and Tetranychus urticae (=T. cinnabarinus) during the interaction. The results showed that after damage of the mite-susceptible cassava cultivar BRA900 by T. urticae for 1 and 8 days, the transcription levels of MePOD and MePPO and the activities of POD and PPO showed no significant difference compared with those in undamaged leaves. However, the corresponding transcription levels and activities in 1- and 8-day-damaged leaves of mite-resistant cassava cultivar C1115 increased to a significant level of approximately twofold. When T. urticae fed on BRA900 for 1 and 8 days, the transcription levels of TcPPO and TcPOD and the activities of PPO and POD showed no significant difference compared with those before feeding. However, the corresponding transcription levels and activities of these two protective enzymes in T. urticae feeding on C1115 significantly decreased by about half. This study preliminarily validates the function of POD and PPO in cassava resistance to T. urticae, and provides candidate gene resource for molecular breeding of spider mite-resistant cassava.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the recurrence rate and risk factors of spontaneous symptomatic epileptic seizures after the first episode in infants and young children. METHODS: The clinical data of infants and young children who experienced the first episode of spontaneous symptomatic epileptic seizures between April 2009 and April 2011 in Suzhou Children's Hospital were collected. Follow-up visits were performed once every 1-3 months, and the follow-up time was 1-60 months. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards model were applied to calculate the recurrence rate of spontaneous symptomatic epileptic seizures and analyze the risk factors for seizure recurrence. RESULTS: Sixty-three children experiencing a first episode of spontaneous symptomatic epileptic seizures were enrolled. Within 5 years after the first episode, 43 children experienced the recurrence of spontaneous symptomatic epileptic seizures, with a 5-year cumulative recurrence rate of 69.4%. Among all recurrent cases, 86% experienced recurrence within 1 year after the first episode. The multivariate analysis with the Cox proportional hazards model showed that epileptiform discharges on electroencephalography were the independent risk factor for recurrence of spontaneous symptomatic epileptic seizures (HR=5.349, 95%CI: 2.375-12.048). CONCLUSIONS: The recurrence rate of spontaneous symptomatic epileptic seizures after the first episode is high in infants and young children. Epileptiform discharges on electroencephalography are the independent risk factor for the recurrence, and thus it is suggested to perform antiepileptic therapy for these children.

RESUMO

Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) production in plastids of Camelina sativa seeds was investigated by comparing levels of polymer produced upon transformation of plants with five different binary vectors containing combinations of five seed-specific promoters for expression of transgenes. Genes encoding PHB biosynthetic enzymes were modified at the N-terminus to encode a plastid targeting signal. PHB levels of up to 15% of the mature seed weight were measured in single sacrificed T1 seeds with a genetic construct containing the oleosin and glycinin promoters. A more detailed analysis of the PHB production potential of two of the best performing binary vectors in a Camelina line bred for larger seed size yielded lines containing up to 15% polymer in mature T2 seeds. Transmission electron microscopy showed the presence of distinct granules of PHB in the seeds. PHB production had varying effects on germination, emergence and survival of seedlings. Once true leaves formed, plants grew normally and were able to set seeds. PHB synthesis lowered the total oil but not the protein content of engineered seeds. A change in the oil fatty acid profile was also observed. High molecular weight polymer was produced with weight-averaged molecular weights varying between 600 000 and 1 500 000, depending on the line. Select lines were advanced to later generations yielding a line with 13.7% PHB in T4 seeds. The levels of polymer produced in this study are the highest reported to date in a seed and are an important step forward for commercializing an oilseed-based platform for PHB production.

RESUMO

Resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound known for its antioxidative and antiinflammatory effects, exerts antiasthmatic effects, although the mechanism underlying these effects remains elusive. The phosphatase and tensin homology deleted on chromosome ten gene (PTEN) is involved in the pathogenesis of asthma, and PTEN overexpression in asthmatic mice improved asthma symptoms. To investigate whether the antiasthmatic mechanisms of resveratrol correlated with the upregulation of PTEN expression, an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine asthma model was used to determine the effectiveness of resveratrol treatment. PTEN mRNA and protein expression was assessed with real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunochemistry. To determine whether airway remodeling occurred, the inner airway wall, mucous layer, and smooth muscle areas were each determined using an image analysis system. The lung epithelial cell line 16HBE was used to study the regulation of PTEN expression levels by resveratrol in vitro. Our data demonstrated that resveratrol inhibited OVA-induced airway inflammation and airway remodeling in asthmatic mice. PTEN expression was decreased in the murine asthma model, although the expression of PTEN was restored following treatment with resveratrol. Correlation efficiency analysis showed that PTEN expression was associated with the degree of airway remodeling. Further in vitro studies demonstrated that the inhibition of Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) activity by a SIRT1 inhibitor and RNA interference decreased PTEN protein expression, while resveratrol attenuated the decreases in PTEN expression induced by the SIRT1 inhibitor. These data suggest the mechanism of the antiasthmatic effects of resveratrol in an OVA-induced murine asthma model, which resulted in the upregulation of PTEN via SIRT1 activation.

RESUMO

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) (BPH), is a major, regionally migratory pest of rice in Asia. Despite intensive migratory studies, the seasonal migratory pattern of this species in the year-round breeding region (i.e., Hainan Island) remains largely unknown. To understand the migration dynamics, we conducted relevant research based on BPH light trap catches on Hainan in 2017-2022. Results showed that the occurrence dynamics of BPH in Hainan oscillated in different years and seasons. Overall, there are 4 migration peak periods on Hainan, with outbound peak periods in April-May and August-September and inbound peak periods in June and October. Trajectory and wind fields showed that in August-September, Hainan had complex meteorological conditions, and the outbound paths of BPH were variable, mainly landing in southeastern Guangxi and southwestern Guangdong. In contrast, April-May was influenced by southeasterly winds, with a wider outbound range and a further distance, landing along northeastern Vietnam from west to east toward Guangxi and Guangdong areas with time. Wind-rain fields, trajectory, and hydrogen isotope showed that in June, southwesterly winds transported BPH northward from the Indochina peninsula, where it was hindered by rainfall in the Leizhou Peninsula area and the migrants will be "rained out" into Hainan. Identically, in October, the interactions between northeasterly winds and rainfall belts on the southwest shore of Hainan increased the opportunities for BPH to migrate southward to reach Hainan. Our results suggest that Hainan is not only an important source of BPH migrating from East Asia but also plays the role of a bridge.

RESUMO

Odontogenic infections can spread to the respiratory tract. Despite the known role of Tannerella forsythia as the primary pathogen in periodontitis, the association between T. forsythia infection and risk of pneumonia or lung abscess remains unknown. In this report, we present a case of lung abscess caused by T. forsythia infection. The pathogen was detected by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of the patient. The clinical characteristics and possible mechanisms of the infection are discussed. T. forsythia is a conditional pathogen that can cause lung abscess in the presence of helper bacteria and reduced host immune status. The course of treatment should be personalized and might be longer than 3 months.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of lacosamide (LCM) monotherapy in the treatment of self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS). Methods: In this study, 89 children with SeLECTS who were treated with LCM monotherapy in the Children's Hospital Affiliated to Soochow University from June 2019 to June 2021 were included. Clinical seizures and spike wave index (SWI) on video EEG during slow-wave sleep were evaluated before and after treatment. The role of LCM monotherapy in improving SWI, controlling clinical seizures and improving cognition was analyzed, and corresponding adverse reactions were documented. Results: There were 52 males and 37 females in this group, with an average age of 7.6 ± 2.1 years. The total effective rate was 93.83% and at 18 months of treatment, the cumulative control rate was 85.19%, the retention rate was 91.01% and the effective rate in terms of EEG spike index was 72.92%, all of which showed a high rate; there was no statistically significant difference in intelligence quotient before and after treatment (P > 0.05). In addition, it was found in the study that the earlier the age of onset, the less obvious the improvement in SWI after LCM treatment; the lower the baseline seizure frequency, the more significant the improvement in SWI after LCM treatment. Conclusion: LCM monotherapy had curative effect and adverse reactions for SeLECTS, with no negative impact on cognition. These significant findings indicate that LCM is likely to become a widely prescribed ASM for the treatment of SeLECTS. Meanwhile, the onset age and baseline seizure frequency had certain value in judging prognosis and predicting curative effect.

RESUMO

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) are the main pests on corn (Poaceae: Gramineae). The performance of the larval wasp, Microplitis pallidipes Szépligeti (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), was reported on S. frugiperda and S. litura. In this study, we evaluated host selectivity, constructed an age-stage, 2-sex life table, and assessed the pest control potential of M. pallidipes against these 2 pests under laboratory conditions. In a 2-choice host preference experiment, M. pallidipes exhibited a stronger preference for S. frugiperda over S. litura and a distinct preference for second instars. We also investigated the parasitism of females that were either unfed or fed with 10% honey-water solution under different host densities and found that the highest parasitism rate was observed when M. pallidipes were fed with honey-water solution on the first day after mating and a presented female wasp:host ratio of 1:90. In a nonselective assay, M. pallidipes successfully completed a full generation on both hosts. However, the parasitoids exhibited higher fitness and population growth potential when reared on S. frugiperda, with a net reproductive rate (R0) of 24.24, an intrinsic rate of increase (r) of 0.20 per day, a finite rate of increase (λ) of 1.23 per day, and a mean generation time (T) of 15.69 days. This study elucidates the performance of M. pallidipes on 2 Spodoptera host species and offers insights into its biological control potential on lepidopteran pests.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess the utility of serum YKL-40 and serum dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP4) as biomarkers for distinguishing between type 2 (T2)-high and T2-low asthma in the Chinese population. Additionally, we sought to explore the associations of serum YKL-40 and DPP4 levels with asthma characteristics and conventional markers. A real-world observational cross-sectional study was conducted, involving a total of 75 adult asthma patients. We collected general information, including demographics and medical history. Measurements included complete blood count, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), post-bronchodilator spirometry, serum YKL-40 and serum DPP4 levels. Asthma endotypes, T2-high and T2-low, were defined through a comprehensive review of existing literature and expert group discussions. Logistic and linear regression models were employed. Our findings indicated no significant association between serum YKL-40 or serum DPP4 levels and T2-high asthma across all models. In the fully adjusted model, their odds ratios (OR) were 0.967 (95% CI: 0.920-1.017) and 0.997 (95% CI: 0.993-1.001), respectively. Notably, serum YKL-40 exhibited a positive correlation with FeNO (ß = 0.382, 95% CI: 0.230-0.533) after adjusting for confounding factors. This association, however, diminished in patients under 40 years old (P = .24), males (P = .25), and those with FEV1%pred of 80% or higher (P = .25). Serum DPP4 demonstrated a negative correlation with FEV1/FVC in the fully adjusted model (ß: -0.005, 95% CI: -0.009, -0.000). Among Chinese adult asthma patients, a positive correlation was observed between serum YKL-40 levels and FeNO in females aged over 40 with FEV1%pred less than 80%. Additionally, a weak negative correlation was found between serum DPP4 levels and FEV1/FVC. However, neither serum YKL-40 nor serum DPP4 levels exhibited the capability to differentiate between T2-high and T2-low asthma.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The beet webworm, Loxostege sticticalis, a worldwide pest of many crops, performs a seasonal migration, causing periodic outbreaks in Asia, Europe and North America. Although long-distance migration is well documented in China, patterns of transboundary migration among China, Russia and Mongolia are largely unknown. We performed a phase analysis of L. sticticalis periodic outbreaks among three countries based on 30 years of historical population data, analyzed the wind systems during migration over boundary regions, and traced the migratory routes in a case study of outbreaks in 2008 by trajectory simulation. RESULTS: Highly synchronized outbreak years of L. sticticalis were observed between China and Mongolia, China and eastern Siberia, China and western Siberia, Mongolia and eastern Siberia, eastern Siberia and western Siberia from 1978 to 2008, indicating possible transboundary migration between these regions. Winds at 300-600 m altitude, where adult migration usually occurs, also showed a high probability of northwestern winds in Haila'er (China), Chita (Russia) and Choybalsan (Mongolia), favoring successful adult migration from these areas to northern and northeastern China. Back trajectory analysis further showed that the first-generation adults that caused the severe outbreak of second-generation larvae in 2008 originated from eastern Siberia, eastern Mongolia, and the boundary regions of China-Russia and China-Mongolia. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrated that the source of L. sticticalis outbreaks in northern China was closely related to the outbreaks in Siberia and Mongolia via long-distance transboundary windborne migration. This information will help guide international monitoring and management strategies against this notorious pest. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
