RESUMO

In the design of dynamic supramolecular systems used in molecular machines, it is important to understand the binding preferences between the macrocycle and stations along the thread. Here, we apply 1H NMR spectroscopy to investigate the relative stabilities of a series of linear alkylammonium templated pseudorotaxanes with the general formula [H2NRR'][Cr7CoF8(O2CCH2 tBu)16] by exchanging the cation in solution. Our results show that the pseudorotaxanes are able to exchange threads via a dissociative mechanism. The position of equilibrium is dependent upon the ammonium cation and solvent used. Short chain primary ammonium cations are shown to be far less favourable macrocycle stations than secondary ammonium cations. Collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry (CID-MS) has been used to look at disassembly of the pseudorotaxanes in a solvent-free environment and stability trends compared to those in acetone-d6. The energy needed to induce 50 % of the precursor ion loss (E50) is used and shows a similar trend to the equilibria measured by NMR. The relative stabilities of these hybrid inorganic-organic pseudo-rotaxanes are different to those of host-guest compounds involving crown ethers and this may be valuable for the design of molecular machines.

RESUMO

Both metalloporphyrins and heterometallic {Cr7Ni} rings are of significant research interest due to their proposed roles in quantum information processing devices. In this study, we present a series of complexes in which [Cr7NiF3(Etglu)(O2CtBu)15] (N-EtgluH5 = N-ethyl-d-glucamine) heterometallic rings are coordinated to metalloporphyrin linkers: the symmetric [M(TPyP)] for M = Cu2+, VO2+, and H2TPyP = 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin; and the asymmetric [{VO}(TrPPyP)] for H2(TrPPyP) = 5,10,15-(triphenyl)-20-(4-pyridyl)porphyrin. The magnetic interactions present in these complexes are unraveled using the continuous wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique. The nature of the coupling between the {Cr7Ni} rings and the central metalloporphyrin is assessed by numerical simulations of CW EPR spectra and determined to be on the order of 0.01 cm-1, larger than the dipolar ones and suitable for individual spin addressability in multiqubit architectures.

RESUMO

A synthetic strategy is demonstrated to prepare two distinct trimers of antiferromagnetically coupled {Cr7 Ni} rings, substantially varying the magnetic interactions between the spin centres. The interactions were studied using multi-frequency cw EPR: in a trimer linked via non-covalent H-bonding interactions no measurable interaction between rings was seen, while in a trimer linked via iso-nicotinate groups isotropic and anisotropic exchange interactions of +0.42 and -0.8 GHz, respectively, were observed. The latter are the same as those for a simpler hetero-dimer system, showing how the spin-spin interactions can be built in a predictable and modular manner in these systems.

RESUMO

Following electrospray ionization, it is common for analytes to enter the gas phase accompanied by a charge-carrying ion, and in most cases, this addition is required to enable detection in the mass spectrometer. These small charge carriers may not be influential in solution but can markedly tune the analyte properties in the gas phase. Therefore, measuring their relative influence on the target molecule can assist our understanding of the structure and stability of the analyte. As the formed adducts are usually distinguishable by their mass, differences in the behavior of the analyte resulting from these added species (e.g., structure, stability, and conformational dynamics) can be easily extracted. Here, we use ion mobility mass spectrometry, supported by density functional theory, to investigate how charge carriers (H+, Na+, K+, and Cs+) as well as water influence the disassembly, stability, and conformational landscape of the homometallic ring [Cr8F8(O2CtBu)16] and the heterometallic rotaxanes [NH2RR'][Cr7MF8(O2CtBu)16], where M = MnII, FeII, CoII, NiII, CuII, ZnII, and CdII. The results yield new insights on their disassembly mechanisms and support previously reported trends in cavity size and transition metal properties, demonstrating the potential of adduct ion studies for characterizing metallosupramolecular complexes in general.

RESUMO

We report a supramolecule that contains five spins of two different types and with, crucially, two different and predictable interaction energies between the spins. The supramolecule is characterized, and the interaction energies are demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Based on the measured parameters, we propose experiments that would allow this designed supramolecule to be used to simulate quantum decoherence in maximally entangled Bell states that could be used in quantum teleportation.

RESUMO

Understanding the fundamental reactivity of polymetallic complexes is challenging due to the complexity of their structures with many possible bond breaking and forming processes. Here, we apply ion mobility mass spectrometry coupled with density functional theory to investigate the disassembly mechanisms and energetics of a family of heterometallic rings and rotaxanes with the general formula [NH2RR'][Cr7MF8(O2CtBu)16] with M = MnII, FeII, CoII, NiII, CuII, ZnII, CdII. Our results show that their stability can be tuned both by altering the d-metal composition in the macrocycle and by the end groups of the secondary ammonium cation [NH2RR']+. Ion mobility probes the conformational landscape of the disassembly process from intact complex to structurally distinct isobaric fragments, providing unique insights to how a given divalent metal tunes the structural dynamics.

RESUMO

Dipolar coupled multi-spin systems have the potential to be used as molecular qubits. Herein we report the synthesis of a molecular multi-qubit model system with three individually addressable, weakly interacting, spin 1 / 2 ${{ 1/2 }}$ centres of differing g-values. We use pulsed Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) techniques to characterise and separately address the individual electron spin qubits; CuII , Cr7 Ni ring and a nitroxide, to determine the strength of the inter-qubit dipolar interaction. Orientation selective Relaxation-Induced Dipolar Modulation Enhancement (os-RIDME) detecting across the CuII spectrum revealed a strongly correlated CuII -Cr7 Ni ring relationship; detecting on the nitroxide resonance measured both the nitroxide and CuII or nitroxide and Cr7 Ni ring correlations, with switchability of the interaction based on differing relaxation dynamics, indicating a handle for implementing EPR-based quantum information processing (QIP) algorithms.

RESUMO

A family of heterometallic rings [Me4N]2[CrIII6MII2F8(O2CtBu)16] is reported using tetramethylammonium hydroxide pentahydrate as the source of a template, where M = Zn, Mn, Ni, and Co. The metal cores are octagons with metal-metal edges bridged by one fluoride and two carboxylate ligands. The divalent metal ions are found ordered at positions 1 and 5 in the octagon. The tetramethylammonium cations are above and below the metal plane of the ring in the crystal structure. Magnetic studies show antiferromagnetic coupling between the paramagnetic metal ions present, leading to paramagnetic ground states in each case. 1H NMR spectroscopy confirms that the structure of the {CrIII6CoII2} ring exists in solution, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirms the magnetic structure of the other three rings.

RESUMO

A finite chain of thirty-one paramagnetic centers is reported, synthesized by reaction of hydrated chromium fluoride, copper carbonate and pivalic acid in the presence of 1,4,7,10-tetrazacyclododecane (cyclen). Magnetic studies show predominantly anti-ferromagnetic exchange leading to a high density of low-lying spin states and large saturation field.

RESUMO

The synthesis, structures, and properties of [4]- and [3]-rotaxane complexes are reported where [2]-rotaxanes, formed from heterometallic {Cr7Ni} rings, are bound to a fluoride-centered {CrNi2} triangle. The compounds have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and have the formulas [CrNi2(F)(O2CtBu)6]{(BH)[Cr7NiF8(O2CtBu)16]}3 (3) and [CrNi2(F)(O2CtBu)6(THF)]{(BH)[Cr7NiF8(O2CtBu)16]}2 (4), where B = py-CH2CH2NHCH2C6H4SCH3. The [4]-rotaxane 3 is an isosceles triangle of three [2]-rotaxanes bound to the central triangle while the [3]-rotaxane 4 contains only two [2]-rotaxanes bound to the central triangle. Studies of the behavior of 3 and 4 in solution by small-angle X-ray scattering and atomistic molecular dynamic simulations show that the structure of 3 is similar to that found in the crystal but that 4 has a different conformation to the crystal. Continuous wave and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to study the structures present and demonstrate that in frozen solutions (at 5 K) 4 forms more extended molecules than 3 and with a wider range of conformations.

RESUMO

Four 3d-4f hetero-polymetallic complexes [Fe2Ln2((OCH2)3CR)2(O2CtBu)6(H2O)4] (where Ln = La (1 and 2) and Gd (3 and 4); and R = Me (1 and 3) and Et (2 and 4)) are synthesized and analyzed using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and SQUID magnetometry. Crystal structures are obtained for both methyl derivatives and show that the complexes are isostructural and adopt a defective dicubane topology. The four heavy metals are connected with two alkoxide bridges. These four precursors are used as single-source precursors to prepare rare-earth orthoferrite pervoskites of the form LnFeO3. Thermal decomposition in a ceramic boat in a tube furnace gives orthorhombic LnFeO3 powders using optimized temperatures and decomposition times: LaFeO3 formed at 650 °C over 30 min, whereas GdFeO3 formed at 750 °C over 18 h. These materials are structurally characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray map spectroscopy, and SQUID magnetometry. EDX spectroscopy mapping reveals a homogeneous spatial distribution of elements for all four materials consistent with LnFeO3. Magnetic measurements on complexes 1-4 confirm the presence of weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the central Fe(III) ions of the clusters and negligible ferromagnetic interaction with peripheral Gd(III) ions in 3 and 4. Zero-field-cooled and field-cooled measurements of magnetization of LaFeO3 and GdFeO3 in the solid-state suggest that both materials are ferromagnetic, and both materials show open magnetic hysteresis loops at 5 and 300 K, with Msat higher than previously reported for these nanomaterials. We conclude that this is a new and facile low temperature route to these important magnetic materials that is potentially universal, limited only by what metals can be programmed into the precursor complexes.

RESUMO

Field-emission devices are promising candidates to replace silicon fin field-effect transistors as next-generation nanoelectronic components. For these devices to be adopted, nanoscale field emitters with nanoscale gaps between them need to be fabricated, requiring the transfer of, for example, sub-10 nm patterns with a sub-20 nm pitch to substrates like silicon and tungsten. New resist materials must therefore be developed that exhibit the properties of sub-10 nm resolution and high dry etch resistance. A negative tone, metal-organic resist is presented here. It can be patterned to produce sub-10 nm features when exposed to helium ion beam lithography at line doses on the order of tens of picocoulombs per centimeter. The resist was used to create 5 nm wide, continuous, discrete lines spaced on a 16 nm pitch in silicon and 6 nm wide lines on an 18 nm pitch in tungsten, with line edge roughness of 3 nm. After the lithographic exposure, the resist demonstrates high resistance to silicon and tungsten dry etch conditions (SF6 and C4F8 plasma), allowing the pattern to be transferred to the underlying substrates. The resist's etch selectivity for silicon and tungsten was measured to be 6.2:1 and 5.6:1, respectively; this allowed 3 to 4 nm thick resist films to yield structures that were 21 and 19 nm tall, respectively, while both maintained a sub-10 nm width on a sub-20 nm pitch.

RESUMO

We report a family of hybrid [2]rotaxanes based on inorganic [Cr7NiF8(O2CtBu)16]- ("{Cr7Ni}") rings templated about organic threads that are terminated at one end with pyridyl groups. These rotaxanes can be coordinated to [Cu(hfac)2] (where Hhfac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetone), to give 1:1 or 1:2 Cu:{Cr7Ni} adducts: {[Cu(hfac)2](py-CH2NH2CH2CH2Ph)[Cr7NiF8(O2CtBu)16]}, {[Cu(hfac)2][py-CH2NH2CH2CH3][Cr7NiF8(O2CtBu)16]}, {[Cu(hfac)2]([py-CH2CH2NH2CH2C6H4SCH3][Cr7NiF8(O2CtBu)16])2}, {[Cu(hfac)2]([py-C6H4-CH2NH2(CH2)4Ph][Cr7NiF8(O2CtBu)16])2}, and {[Cu(hfac)2]([3-py-CH2CH2NH2(CH2)3SCH3][Cr7NiF8(O2CtBu)16])2}, the structures of which have been determined by X-ray diffraction. The {Cr7Ni} rings and CuII ions both have electronic spin S = 1/2, but with very different g-values. Continuous-wave EPR spectroscopy reveals the exchange interactions between these dissimilar spins, and hence the communication between the different molecular components that comprise these supramolecular systems. The interactions are weak such that we observe AX or AX2 type spectra. The connectivity between the {Cr7Ni} ring and thread terminus is varied such that the magnitude of the exchange interaction J can be tuned. The coupling is shown to be dominated by through-bond rather than through-space mechanisms.

RESUMO

Coherent control of individual molecular spins in nanodevices is a pivotal prerequisite for fulfilling the potential promised by molecular spintronics. By applying electric field pulses during time-resolved electron spin resonance measurements, we measure the sensitivity of the spin in several antiferromagnetic molecular nanomagnets to external electric fields. We find a linear electric field dependence of the spin states in Cr_{7}Mn, an antiferromagnetic ring with a ground-state spin of S=1, and in a frustrated Cu_{3} triangle, both with coefficients of about 2 rad s^{-1}/V m^{-1}. Conversely, the antiferromagnetic ring Cr_{7}Ni, isomorphic with Cr_{7}Mn but with S=1/2, does not exhibit a detectable effect. We propose that the spin-electric field coupling may be used for selectively controlling individual molecules embedded in nanodevices.

RESUMO

[2] and [3] hybrid rotaxanes are reported based on {Ti7 M} rings (M is a trivalent metal such as FeIII or GaIII ). NMR studies show that [2]rotaxanes can act as molecular shuttles, while EPR studies of [3]rotaxanes show weak interactions between the paramagnetic components of the supramolecular assemblies.

RESUMO

A family of heterometallic [Cat][Tix MO(x+1 )(O2 Ct Bu)2x+2 ] rings is reported where Cat=a secondary or tertiary alkyl ammonium ion, x=7, 8 or 9, and M=FeIII , GaIII , CrIII , InIII and AlIII . The structures are regular polygons with eight, nine or ten vertices with each edge bridged by an oxide and two pivalates. The size of the ring formed is controlled by the alkylammonium cation present. In each case a homometallic by-product is found [Cat][Tix O(x+1 )(O2 Ct Bu)2x-1 ].

RESUMO

The spin dynamics of Cr8 Mn, a nine-membered antiferromagnetic (AF) molecular nanomagnet, are investigated. Cr8 Mn is a rare example of a large odd-membered AF ring, and has an odd-number of 3d-electrons present. Odd-membered AF rings are unusual and of interest due to the presence of competing exchange interactions that result in frustrated-spin ground states. The chemical synthesis and structures of two Cr8 Mn variants that differ only in their crystal packing are reported. Evidence of spin frustration is investigated by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy (µSR). From INS studies we accurately determine an appropriate microscopic spin Hamiltonian and we show that µSR is sensitive to the ground-spin-state crossing from S=1/2 to S=3/2 in Cr8 Mn. The estimated width of the muon asymmetry resonance is consistent with the presence of an avoided crossing. The investigation of the internal spin structure of the ground state, through the analysis of spin-pair correlations and scalar-spin chirality, shows a non-collinear spin structure that fluctuates between non-planar states of opposite chiralities.

RESUMO

The first regular homometallic ring containing an odd number of metal centers is reported. The ring was synthesized by means of amine-templated self-assembly. Extensive physical characterization studies, including magnetic measurements, powder inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and DFT calculations, show that the molecule has a near perfect match to the expected behavior for a frustrated system with the lowest energy pair of S=1/2 spin states separated by only 0.1 meV (0.8 cm(-1) ).
