Previous functional neuroimaging studies have shown that maintenance of centrally presented objects in visual short-term memory (VSTM) leads to bilateral increases of BOLD activations in IPS/IOS cortex, while prior electrophysiological work suggests that maintaining stimuli encoded from a single hemifield leads to a sustained posterior contralateral negativity (SPCN) in electrophysiology and magnetoencephalography. These two findings have never been investigated using the same physiological measures. We recorded the BOLD response using fMRI, magnetoencephalography (MEG), and electrophysiology (EEG), while subjects encoded visual stimuli from a single hemifield of a balanced display. The EEG showed an SPCN. However, no SPCN-like activation was observed in the BOLD signals. The BOLD response in parietal cortex remained bilateral, even after unilateral encoding of the stimuli, but MEG showed both bilateral and contralateral activations, each likely reflecting a sub portion of the neuronal populations participating in the maintenance of information in VSTM. Contrary to the assumption that BOLD, EEG, and MEG responses - that were each linked to the maintenance of information in VSTM - are markers of the same neuronal processes, our findings suggest that each technique reveals a somewhat distinct but overlapping neural signature of the mechanisms supporting visual short-term memory.

The incidence of enteric infections in broiler chickens may increase worldwide due to mounting pressure to limit the use of sub-therapeutic antibiotics and ionophores for coccidia suppression/prevention in the diets of broilers. For this reason, we need expand our knowledge on the role that micro-minerals have in modulating the intestinal physiology, immunology, and microbiology of broiler chickens. There are issues associated with the use of high doses of some micro-minerals in the diets of animals, such as environmental contamination, bacterial resistance, and gizzard erosion. Therefore, there is a need to maximize the absorption of these minerals by the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of birds when intestinal function may be compromised. Zinc is an essential micromineral required for growth, and influences intestinal development and/or regeneration during and after enteric disease. Two studies were conducted by our lab to determine the effects of Zn source in broilers under coccidia and Clostridium perfringens challenge. In the first study, Zn proteinate had beneficial effects on the performance of chickens challenged with coccidia plus C. perfringens by enhancing intestinal integrity and partially attenuating the inflammatory response. In the second study, Zn proteinate lowered the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulated the ileal microbiota. Additionally, the poultry industry has used prophylactic concentrations of dietary Cu for its ability to improve feed conversion for a long time. Copper absorption occurs mainly in the duodenum of chickens and, therefore, injuries to the intestinal epithelium of duodenum would impair Cu absorption and decrease its tissue concentration. Although there is a lack of studies relating Mn supplementation and its different sources on the immune response against coccidiosis in poultry, it is likely that Mn is beneficial during enteric challenges due to its role in the production of mucopolysaccharides. Therefore, the proper evaluation of the role of minerals on mitigating the negative impact of coccidiosis in broilers must consider their properties in modulating the physiology, immunology, and the intestinal microbiota of the host during health and disease situation events.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis DSM 32315 (probiotic) on the performance and intestinal microbiota of broiler chickens infected with Clostridium perfringens (CP). One-day-old broiler chickens were assigned to 3 treatments with 8 replicate pens (50 birds/pen). The treatments were: non-infected control; infected control; and infected supplemented with probiotic (1 × 106 CFU/g of feed). On day of hatch, all birds were sprayed with a coccidia vaccine based on the manufacturer recommended dosage. On d 18â»20 the infected birds were inoculated with CP via feed. Necrotic enteritis (NE) lesion score was performed on d 21. Digestive tract of 2 birds/pen was collected on d 21 to analyze the ileal and cecal microbiota by 16S rRNA sequencing. Performance was evaluated on d 28 and 42. On d 21, probiotic supplementation reduced (p < 0.001) the severity of NE related lesion versus infected control birds. On d 28, feed efficiency was improved (p < 0.001) in birds supplemented with probiotic versus infected control birds. On d 42, body weight gain (BW gain) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were improved (p < 0.001) in probiotic supplemented birds versus infected control birds. The diversity, composition and predictive function of the intestinal microbial digesta changed with the infection but the supplementation of probiotic reduced these variations. Therefore, dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis DSM 32315 was beneficial in attenuating the negative effects of CP challenge on the performance and intestinal microbiota of broilers chickens.

INRODUCTION: Spinal Epidural Lipomatosis (SEL) is believed to be a rare disorder. The incidence and prevalence of clinically symptomatic SEL in patients with spinal stenosis has never been reported in the literature. Our study aims to determine the prevalence, incidence, and associated risk factors of SEL in patients with the diagnosis of spinal stenosis. METHODS: This is a retrospective study. We reviewed the charts of 831 patients with the diagnosis of spinal stenosis over a 30 month period. All patients had spinal MRIs. Grading of SEL was performed using the Borré method. RESULTS: 52 patients (21 female and 31 male) had symptomatic moderate and severe SEL. We found a prevalence of 6.26% and an annual incidence of 2.5%. SEL was most commonly seen at L5-S1 level. 27% had received corticosteroids. All SEL patients were overweight and 79% were obese. CONCLUSIONS: SEL is not uncommon in patients with spinal stenosis. SEL should be considered as a possible diagnosis in those with symptoms of spinal stenosis especially in those with associated risk factors.

HIV prevention counseling linked with testing has been shown to reduce high-risk behaviors and new sexually transmitted diseases in public clinic settings. However, few studies have been conducted evaluating the implementation of such models outside a research setting. This study sought to determine the extent to which the introduction of a standard protocol based on Project RESPECT improves the achievement of HIV prevention counseling goals of existing counseling and testing programs. Four prevention counseling programs contracting with the Texas Department of State Health Services completed a standardized 5-day training and implemented the protocols, counseling tools, and quality assurance (QA) procedures developed for the project. Introduction of the protocol was accomplished with existing program resources and significantly improved prevention counseling. Direct observation of counseling sessions demonstrated a significant improvement in attainment for eight of the nine counseling goals of initial sessions and for all counseling goals of follow-up sessions after the protocol was introduced. Client exit questionnaires reinforced this finding. Significant improvement was also found in use of counseling skills, with improvements in 6 of 10 skills observed in initial sessions and 4 of 10 skills in follow-up sessions. Challenges identified through semistructured interviews with counselors and supervisors included serving non-English-speaking and low-risk clients, mastery of the protocol, the amount of time required for QA, and implementation in settings with severe time constraints.

The purpose of the study was to examine the potential for using the mechanomyographic (MMG) signal as a biofeedback method to enhance muscular relaxation and to improve performance during forearm flexion repetitions to fatigue. Twelve adult (mean +/- SD; age: 22.0 +/- 1.1 years) moderately trained subjects (weight: 82.3 +/- 29.2 kg; height: 165.7 +/- 49.0 cm) were instructed to relax the biceps brachii muscle using MMG biofeedback (BIO) provided by viewing a computer screen graphically displaying the MMG signal and then without using MMG biofeedback (NOBIO). Electromyographic (EMG) and MMG signals were detected midway over the biceps brachii during the relaxation protocol. In subsequent visits to the laboratory, subjects performed as many repetitions as possible at 85% of 1 repetition maximum with BIO and NOBIO using the seated preacher curl exercise. Two-way (biofeedback x gender) mixed factorial analyses of variance revealed significantly (p < 0.05) lower MMG (mean +/- SEM; BIO = 0.6 +/- 0.1 mV; NOBIO = 1.1 +/- 0.2 mV) and EMG amplitudes (BIO = 6.6 +/- 0.6 microV; NOBIO = 9.4 +/- 1.4 microV) for BIO when subjects were instructed to relax the biceps brachii muscle. There was no significant difference in the number of forearm flexion repetitions performed for BIO (mean +/- SD; 7.9 +/- 0.4 reps) vs. NOBIO (8.1 +/- 0.6 reps). The results of the present study revealed that using MMG as a biofeedback technique can enhance the development of muscle relaxation, but is not useful in delaying fatigue during forearm flexion repetitions. Our results may have been influenced by a relatively short training phase designed to teach subjects to use the MMG signal as a biofeedback method. Future studies are needed to determine whether MMG biofeedback can be used for other purposes. If MMG is found to be useful as a biofeedback method, it has some distinct practical advantages over EMG that the strength and conditioning athlete and professional may find appealing.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an acute static stretching bout of the biceps brachii on torque, electromyography (EMG), and mechanomyography (MMG) during concentric isokinetic muscle actions. Eighteen (men, n = 10; women, n = 8) adult subjects (M +/- SD age = 22.7 +/- 2.8 years; weight = 78.0 +/- 17.0 kg; height = 177.9 +/- 11.0 cm) performed maximal isokinetic (30 and 270 degrees.s(-1)) forearm flexion strength testing on 2 occasions while EMG and MMG were recorded. Subjects were randomly assigned to stretching (STR) or nonstretching (NSTR) protocols before strength testing. Two-way ANOVAs with repeated measures revealed significantly (p < or = 0.05) greater torque for NSTR (M +/- SEM = 36.9 +/- 3.3 N.m) vs. STR (35.2 +/- 3.3 N.m), significantly greater MMG amplitude for STR vs. NSTR for 30 degrees.s(-1) (STR = 93.5 +/- 14.4 mV; NSTR = 63.1 +/- 10.6 mV) and 270 degrees.s(-1) (STR = 207.6 +/- 35.6 mV; NSTR = 136.4 +/- 31.7 mV), and no difference in EMG amplitude. These results indicate that a greater ability to produce torque without prior stretching is related to the musculotendinous stiffness of the muscle rather than the number of motor units activated. This suggests that performing activities that reduce muscle stiffness (such as stretching), may be detrimental to performance.
