Teaching enables humans to impart vast stores of culturally specific knowledge and skills. However, little is known about the neural computations that guide teachers' decisions about what information to communicate. Participants (N = 28) played the role of teachers while being scanned using fMRI; their task was to select examples that would teach learners how to answer abstract multiple-choice questions. Participants' examples were best described by a model that selects evidence that maximizes the learner's belief in the correct answer. Consistent with this idea, participants' predictions about how well learners would do closely tracked the performance of an independent sample of learners (N = 140) who were tested on the examples they had provided. In addition, regions that play specialized roles in processing social information, namely the bilateral temporoparietal junction and middle and dorsal medial prefrontal cortex, tracked learners' posterior belief in the correct answer. Our results shed light on the computational and neural architectures that support our extraordinary abilities as teachers.

In order to efficiently divide labor with others, it is important to understand what our collaborators can do (i.e., their competence). However, competence is not static-people get better at particular jobs the more often they perform them. This plasticity of competence creates a challenge for collaboration: For example, is it better to assign tasks to whoever is most competent now, or to the person who can be trained most efficiently "on-the-job"? We conducted four experiments (N=396) that examine how people make decisions about whom to train (Experiments 1 and 3) and whom to recruit (Experiments 2 and 4) to a collaborative task, based on the simulated collaborators' starting expertise, the training opportunities available, and the goal of the task. We found that participants' decisions were best captured by a planning model that attempts to maximize the returns from collaboration while minimizing the costs of hiring and training individual collaborators. This planning model outperformed alternative models that based these decisions on the agents' current competence, or on how much agents stood to improve in a single training step, without considering whether this training would enable agents to succeed at the task in the long run. Our findings suggest that people do not recruit and train collaborators based solely on their current competence, nor solely on the opportunities for their collaborators to improve. Instead, people use an intuitive theory of competence to balance the costs of hiring and training others against the benefits to the collaboration.
RESUMO
We propose that human social learning is subject to a trade-off between the cost of performing a computation and the flexibility of its outputs. Viewing social learning through this lens sheds light on cases that seem to violate bifocal stance theory (BST) - such as high-fidelity imitation in instrumental action - and provides a mechanism by which causal insight can be bootstrapped from imitation of cultural practices.

The human capacity to reason about others' minds includes making causal inferences about intentions, beliefs, values, and goals. Previous fMRI research has suggested that a network of brain regions, including bilateral temporo-parietal junction (TPJ), superior temporal sulcus (STS), and medial prefrontal-cortex (MPFC), are reliably recruited for mental state reasoning. Here, in two fMRI experiments, we investigate the representational content of these regions. Building on existing computational and neural evidence, we hypothesized that social brain regions contain at least two functionally and spatially distinct components: one that represents information related to others' motivations and values, and another that represents information about others' beliefs and knowledge. Using multi-voxel pattern analysis, we find evidence that motivational versus epistemic features are independently represented by theory of mind (ToM) regions: RTPJ contains information about the justification of the belief, bilateral TPJ represents the modality of the source of knowledge, and VMPFC represents the valence of the resulting emotion. These representations are found only in regions implicated in social cognition and predict behavioral responses at the level of single items. We argue that cortical regions implicated in mental state inference contain complementary, but distinct, representations of epistemic and motivational features of others' beliefs, and that, mirroring the processes observed in sensory systems, social stimuli are represented in distinct and distributed formats across the human brain.

How do teachers learn about what learners already know? How do learners aid teachers by providing them with information about their background knowledge and what they find confusing? We formalize this collaborative reasoning process using a hierarchical Bayesian model of pedagogy. We then evaluate this model in two online behavioral experiments (N = 312 adults). In Experiment 1, we show that teachers select examples that account for learners' background knowledge, and adjust their examples based on learners' feedback. In Experiment 2, we show that learners strategically provide more feedback when teachers' examples deviate from their background knowledge. These findings provide a foundation for extending computational accounts of pedagogy to richer interactive settings.

Board, card or video games have been played by virtually every individual in the world. Games are popular because they are intuitive and fun. These distinctive qualities of games also make them ideal for studying the mind. By being intuitive, games provide a unique vantage point for understanding the inductive biases that support behaviour in more complex, ecological settings than traditional laboratory experiments. By being fun, games allow researchers to study new questions in cognition such as the meaning of 'play' and intrinsic motivation, while also supporting more extensive and diverse data collection by attracting many more participants. We describe the advantages and drawbacks of using games relative to standard laboratory-based experiments and lay out a set of recommendations on how to gain the most from using games to study cognition. We hope this Perspective will lead to a wider use of games as experimental paradigms, elevating the ecological validity, scale and robustness of research on the mind.

By collaborating with others, humans can pool their limited knowledge, skills, and resources to achieve goals that outstrip the abilities of any one person. What cognitive capacities make human collaboration possible? Here, we propose that collaboration is grounded in an intuitive understanding of how others think and of what they can do-in other words, of their mental states and competence. We present a belief-desire-competence framework that formalizes this proposal by extending existing models of commonsense psychological reasoning. Our framework predicts that agents recursively reason how much effort they and their partner will allocate to a task, based on the rewards at stake and on their own and their collaborator's competence. Across three experiments (N = 249), we show that the belief-desire-competence framework captures human judgments in a variety of contexts that are critical to collaboration, including predicting whether a joint activity will succeed (Experiment 1), selecting incentives for collaborators (Experiment 2), and choosing which individuals to recruit for a collaborative task (Experiment 3). Our work provides a theoretical framework for understanding how commonsense psychological reasoning contributes to collaborative achievements. With the advent of multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) as an important analytic approach to fMRI, new insights into the functional organization of the brain have emerged. Several software packages have been developed to perform MVPA analysis, but deploying them comes with the cost of adjusting data to individual idiosyncrasies associated with each package. Here we describe PyMVPA BIDS-App, a fast and robust pipeline based on the data organization of the BIDS standard that performs multivariate analyses using powerful functionality of PyMVPA. The app runs flexibly with blocked and event-related fMRI experimental designs, is capable of performing classification as well as representational similarity analysis, and works both within regions of interest or on the whole brain through searchlights. In addition, the app accepts as input both volumetric and surface-based data. Inspections into the intermediate stages of the analyses are available and the readability of final results are facilitated through visualizations. The PyMVPA BIDS-App is designed to be accessible to novice users, while also offering more control to experts through command-line arguments in a highly reproducible environment.

Since the cognitive revolution, psychologists have developed formal theories of cognition by thinking about the mind as a computer. However, this metaphor is typically applied to individual minds. Humans rarely think alone; compared to other animals, humans are curiously dependent on stores of culturally transmitted skills and knowledge, and we are particularly good at collaborating with others. Rather than picturing the human mind as an isolated computer, we can imagine each mind as a node in a vast distributed system. Viewing human cognition through the lens of distributed systems motivates new questions about how humans share computation, when it makes sense to do so, and how we can build institutions to facilitate collaboration.

How do people judge responsibility in collaborative tasks? Past work has proposed a number of metrics that people may use to attribute blame and credit to others, such as effort, competence, and force. Some theories consider only the actual effort or force (individuals are more responsible if they put forth more effort or force), whereas others consider counterfactuals (individuals are more responsible if some alternative behavior on their or their collaborator's part could have altered the outcome). Across four experiments (N=717), we found that participants' judgments are best described by a model that considers both actual and counterfactual effort. This finding generalized to an independent validation data set (N=99). Our results thus support a dual-factor theory of responsibility attribution in collaborative tasks.

Background: Although psoriasis burden and treatment have been well characterized in developed countries, there are scarce in-depth epidemiological studies in Latin American countries. Objectives: To describe the sociodemographic and clinical features and the economic burden of psoriasis among children and adult patients from Colombia. Methods: This cross-sectional study included patients from dermatology private practice offices, health provider institutions and hospitals in seven Colombian cities. We collected data on disease distribution, weight, height, body mass index, waist-hip ratio, disease severity, therapy, personal history of comorbidities, and direct costs. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the associations between severity scales and sociodemographic and clinical variables. Results: Two-hundred-three patients (43.8% women, 56.2% men) with an age range between 7 to 89 years old were included. The main subtype was psoriasis vulgaris and mean age of diagnosis was 37.1 years. The most common comorbidities were obesity, hypertension, psoriatic arthritis, dyslipidemia and diabetes. Women had a significant increased odds of presenting with psoriatic arthritis. Body-mass-index and hypertension were significantly associated with a higher psoriasis severity, whereas being female and non-obese was associated with a lower risk. A third of the patients had a family history of psoriasis and sleeping disorders. Forty-one percent of participants either had no income or had an income below 224 US dollars per month and >20% of their income was spent on their disease. Conclusions: This study is supported by robust scientific data and contributes to understanding the burden of psoriasis in Latin America. This study adds well-supported data through an in-depth clinical and economical characterization of Colombian children and adult patients with psoriasis and shows the high impact and burden of the disease on patients and their families.

Reinforcement learning models have been productively applied to identify neural correlates of the value of social information. However, by operationalizing social information as a lean, reward-predictive cue, this literature underestimates the richness of human social learning: Humans readily go beyond action-outcome mappings and can draw flexible inferences from a single observation. We argue that computational models of social learning need minds, i.e, a generative model of how others' unobservable mental states cause their observable actions. Recent advances in inferential social learning suggest that even young children learn from others by using an intuitive, generative model of other minds. Bridging developmental, Bayesian, and reinforcement learning perspectives can enrich our understanding of the neural bases of distinctively human social learning.

Sharks are fished for human consumption in Colombia, and fins are exported illegally to international markets. The goal was to identify differences in total mercury (THg) concentrations in fins and muscles of shark species seized in the Buenaventura port (Colombian Pacific), and to assess potential human health risks related to shark consumption. Seven species were considered in this study: Pelagic Thresher (Alopias pelagicus), Pacific Smalltail Shark (Carcharhinus cerdale), Brown Smoothhound (Mustelus henlei), Sicklefin Smoothhound (Mustelus lunulatus), Scalloped Bonnethead (Sphyrna corona), Scalloped Hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini), and Bonnethead Shark (Sphyrna tiburo), and THg was analyzed in shark tissues. 24% muscle samples concentrations were above international recommended limits for human consumption, especially for A. pelagicus and S. lewini. Stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) analysis showed a foraging overlapping in coastal habitats, where overfishing usually occurs. This study provides useful scientific information to develop management plans for sharks in Colombia and neighboring countries.

Online data collection methods are expanding the ease and access of developmental research for researchers and participants alike. While its popularity among developmental scientists has soared during the COVID-19 pandemic, its potential goes beyond just a means for safe, socially distanced data collection. In particular, advances in video conferencing software has enabled researchers to engage in face-to-face interactions with participants from nearly any location at any time. Due to the novelty of these methods, however, many researchers still remain uncertain about the differences in available approaches as well as the validity of online methods more broadly. In this article, we aim to address both issues with a focus on moderated (synchronous) data collected using video-conferencing software (e.g., Zoom). First, we review existing approaches for designing and executing moderated online studies with young children. We also present concrete examples of studies that implemented choice and verbal measures (Studies 1 and 2) and looking time (Studies 3 and 4) across both in-person and online moderated data collection methods. Direct comparison of the two methods within each study as well as a meta-analysis of all studies suggest that the results from the two methods are comparable, providing empirical support for the validity of moderated online data collection. Finally, we discuss current limitations of online data collection and possible solutions, as well as its potential to increase the accessibility, diversity, and replicability of developmental science.

BACKGROUND: Administration of L-nil, a selective inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), improves ileus in an animal model of resuscitation induced intestinal edema. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the iNOS/nitric oxide (NO) signal transduction pathway in intestinal edema. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into two groups; CONTROL and RESUS+VH (edema, 80 cc/kg normal saline (resuscitation) with mesenteric venous hypertension). iNOS mRNA and protein, iNOS activity, NO tissue levels, soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) expression, and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels were measured. As a functional endpoint, we evaluated intestinal contractile strength and frequency in L-nil treated animals. RESULTS: Edema was associated with increased iNOS mRNA and protein expression without subsequent increases in iNOS activity or tissue NO levels. There was no significant change in sGC expression or increase in cGMP induced by edema. Administration of L-nil did not decrease edema development or preserve contractile strength, but increased contractile frequency. CONCLUSION: Hydrostatic intestinal edema is not associated with increased iNOS activity or tissue NO levels. Administration of L-nil in edema increases intestinal contractile frequency. This may represent a potential mechanism for the amelioration of ileus seen with the administration of L-nil.

When our own knowledge is limited, we often turn to others for information. However, social learning does not guarantee accurate learning or better decisions: Other people's knowledge can be as limited as our own, and their advice is not always helpful. This study examines how human learners put two "imperfect" heads together to make utility-maximizing decisions. Participants played a card game where they chose to "stay" with a card of known value or "switch" to an unknown card, given an advisor's advice to stay or switch. Participants used advice strategically based on which cards the advisor could see (Experiment 1), how helpful the advisor was (Experiment 2), and what strategy the advisor used to select advice (Experiment 3). Overall, participants benefited even from imperfect advice based on incomplete information. Participants' responses were consistent with a Bayesian model that jointly infers how the advisor selects advice and the value of the advisor's card, compared to an alternative model that weights advice based on the advisor's accuracy. By reasoning about others' minds, human learners can make the best of even noisy, impoverished social information.

Shared preferences-liking the same things-facilitate and strengthen bonds between individuals. However, not all shared preferences are equally meaningful; sharing a rare preference with someone is often more exciting and meaningful than sharing a common preference. Here we present evidence for the rare preference effect: Participants chose to interact with (Experiment 1), and endorsed interactions between (Experiment 2), individuals who shared a rare preference, rather than those who shared a common preference, and this tendency increased with the relative rarity of the preference. While having a preference usually implies knowing and liking something, the presence of shared knowledge alone was sufficient to give rise to the rare preference effect (Experiments 3 & 4). Further, we find that social affiliation judgments are modulated by the causal process by which individuals came to have shared knowledge: Participants preferred to interact with someone who acquired a shared preference deliberately rather than accidentally (Experiment 5). In addition to the many cultural and emotional factors that drive mutual attraction, these results suggest that people's decisions about with whom to interact are systematically influenced by the statistics of the social environment.

A small and genetically isolated bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) population resides year-round in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago-Panama (BDT). Photo-identification and genetic data showed that this dolphin population is highly phylopatric and is formed exclusively by individuals of the "inshore form". This study aimed to investigate the trophic ecology and mercury concentrations of bottlenose dolphins in BDT to assess their coastal habits. We collected muscle samples (nâ¯=â¯175) of 11 potential fish prey species, and skin samples from free-ranging dolphins in BDT (nâ¯=â¯37) and La Guajira-Colombia (nâ¯=â¯7) to compare isotopic niche width. Results showed that BDT dolphins have a coastal feeding habit, belong to the "inshore form" (δ13Câ¯=â¯-13.05⯱â¯1.89), and have low mercury concentrations (meanâ¯=â¯1637⯱â¯1387â¯ngâ¯g-1dw). However, this element is biomagnified in the BDT food chain, showing a marginal dolphins health risk (RQâ¯=â¯1.00). We call for a monitoring pollutant program and conservation strategies aimed to protect the dolphin population at BDT.

Antecedentes: La carga de enfermedad y el tratamiento de la psoriasis han sido bien caracterizados en los países desarrollados, pero los estudios epidemiológicos realizados en América Latina son escasos. Objetivos: Describir las características sociodemográficas, clínicas y económicas de la psoriasis en pacientes pediátricos y adultos de Colombia. Métodos: Este fue un estudio observacional transversal que incluyó pacientes recolectados en consultorios privados de dermatología, instituciones prestadoras de salud y hospitales de siete ciudades de Colombia. Se incluyeron datos relacionados con la distribución de la enfermedad, peso, altura, índice de masa corporal, medición de la cintura/cadera, severidad de la enfermedad, tratamiento, antecedentes de comorbilidades y costos directos para el paciente o la familia. Se realizó un análisis de regresión logística múltiple para evaluar las asociaciones entre la severidad de la psoriasis y las variables sociodemográficas y clínicas. Resultados: Se incluyeron 203 pacientes (43.8% mujeres y 56.2% hombres) con un rango de edad entre 7 a 89 años. El subtipo principal fue la psoriasis vulgar y la edad media de diagnóstico fue de 37,1 años. Las comorbilidades más frecuentes fueron la obesidad, la hipertensión arterial, la artritis psoriásica, la dislipidemia y la diabetes. Las mujeres tuvieron un mayor riesgo de presentar artritis psoriásica. El índice de masa corporal y la hipertensión se asociaron significativamente con la severidad de la psoriasis, mientras que ser mujer y no obeso se relacionó con un menor riesgo, respectivamente. Un tercio de los pacientes tenía antecedentes familiares de psoriasis y trastornos del sueño. Cuarenta y uno por ciento de los participantes no tenían ingresos o tenían ingresos inferiores a 224 dólares estadounidenses por mes y >20% de sus ingresos los gastaron en la enfermedad. Conclusiones: Este estudio muestra un gran impacto de la psoriasis en los pacientes afectados y contribuye a comprender la carga de la psoriasis en América Latina aportando datos científicos sólidos a la comunidad dermatológica y a las autoridades sanitarias colombianas con respecto a los estándares de atención médica. También crea conciencia sobre la carga económica de la enfermedad y también enfatiza la necesidad de un seguimiento estrecho de los pacientes con psoriasis para prevenir, identificar y manejar sus comorbilidades.

Introducción. La psoriasis es una enfermedad crónica que afecta del 1 al 3% de la población mundial, y tiene mayor incidencia entre los 15 y los 35 años. Se define como una enfermedad de origen inmunológico, genética y ambiental. Se asocia con otras enfermedades que incluyen las metabólicas y las del sistema cardiovascular, y con alteraciones en la calidad de vida. El tratamiento depende de la seriedad de la enfermedad. Materiales y métodos. Se hizo un estudio observacional descriptivo de corte, de los pacientes con diagnóstico de psoriasis tratados con fototerapia en el Centro Dermatológico CES, Sabaneta (Antioquia), que ingresaron entre el 1º de enero de 2006 y el 30 de septiembre de 2009. Se recopiló información de 93 pacientes a partir de la historia clínica, una encuesta y la aplicación de las escalas de medición de Glogau, DLQI (Dermatology Life Quality Index) y PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index). Resultados. De los 93 pacientes, 43% eran mujeres y 57% hombres, con edad media de 45 años. El promedio de evolución de la enfermedad fue de 14 años y 43% tenía enfermedades asociadas. Todos habían recibido tratamiento tópico y 54,8% había recibido tratamientos sistémicos. El promedio de acumulado de julios fue de 393 J/cm2 y el de milijulios fue de 45.320 mJ/cm2. El valor promedio del PASI fue de 7, y en 41,9% de los pacientes no hubo afectación de la calidad de vida. El 57,1% tenía fotoenvejecimiento de grado III. El 38,7% de los pacientes presentaba compromiso ungular y 23,6% refirió dolor articular. Conclusión. Los resultados obtenidos en este estudio son similares a los reportados en la literatura científica mundial. Es importante comenzar a recolectar nuestra propia estadística.
