RESUMO

Charge ordering (CO) phenomena have been widely debated in strongly-correlated electron systems mainly regarding their role in high-temperature superconductivity. Here, the structural and charge distribution in NdNiO2 thin films prepared with and without capping layers, and characterized by the absence and presence of CO are elucidated. The microstructural and spectroscopic analysis is done by scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES). Capped samples show Ni1+ , with an out-of-plane (o-o-p) lattice parameter of around 3.30 Å indicating good stabilization of the infinite-layer structure. Bulk-sensitive HAXPES on Ni-2p shows weak satellite features indicating large charge-transfer energy. The uncapped samples evidence an increase of the o-o-p parameter up to 3.65 Å on the thin film top with a valence toward Ni2+ in this region. Here, 4D-STEM demonstrates (303)-oriented stripes which emerge from partially occupied apical oxygen. Those stripes form quasi-2D coherent domains viewed as rods in the reciprocal space with Δqz ≈ 0.24 reciprocal lattice units (r.l.u.) extension located at Q = ( ± 1 3 , 0 , ± 1 3 $\pm \frac{1}{3},0,\pm \frac{1}{3}$ ) and ( ± 2 3 , 0 , ± 2 3 $\pm \frac{2}{3},0,\pm \frac{2}{3}$ ) r.l.u. The stripes associated with oxygen re-intercalation concomitant with hole doping suggest a possible link to the previously reported CO in infinite-layer nickelate thin films.

RESUMO

This paper presents inserexs, an open-source computer program that aims to pre-evaluate the different reflections for resonant elastic X-ray scattering (REXS) diffraction experiments. REXS is an extremely versatile technique that can provide positional and occupational information about the atoms present in a crystal. inserexs was conceived to help REXS experimentalists know beforehand which reflections to choose to determine a parameter of interest. Prior work has already proven this to be useful in the determination of atomic positions in oxide thin films. inserexs allows generalization to any given system and aims to popularize resonant diffraction as an alternative technique to improve the resolution of crystalline structures.

RESUMO

The design of bioactive plasters is of major interest for the amelioration of dental and bone cements. In this article, a one pot and environmentally friendly strategy based on the addition of a cheap polyphenol-tannic acid (TA) or the main phenolic constituent of TA, namely pyrogallol (PY)- able to interact with calcium sulfate is proposed. Tannic acid and pyrogallol not only modify the morphology of the obtained plaster+TA/PY composites but a part of it is released and provides strong-up to twenty fold- antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus. It is shown that the higher antibacterial efficiency of PY is related to a greater release compared to TA even if in solution the antibacterial effect of PY is lower than that of TA when reported on the basis of the molar concentration in PY units.

RESUMO

We show how the kinetics of a fast and irreversible chemical reaction in a nanocrystalline material at high temperature can be studied using nanosecond electron pulses in an electron microscope. Infrared laser pulses first heat a nanocrystalline oxide layer on a carbon film, then single nanosecond electron pulses allow imaging, electron diffraction and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. This enables us to study the evolution of the morphology, crystallography, and elemental composition of the system with nanosecond resolution. Here, NiO nanocrystals are reduced to elemental nickel within 5 µs after the laser pulse. At high temperatures induced by laser heating, reduction results first in a liquid nickel phase that crystallizes on microsecond timescales. We show that the reaction kinetics in the reduction of nanocrystalline NiO differ from those in bulk materials. The observation of liquid nickel as a transition phase explains why the reaction is first order and occurs at high rates.

RESUMO

Non-Ising-like 180° ferroelectric domain wall architecture and domain distribution in tetragonal PbZrx Ti1-x O3 thin films are probed using a combination of optical second harmonic generation and scanning transmission electron microscopy. In the remnant state, a specific nonlinear optical signature of tilted 180° domain walls corresponding to a mixed Ising-Néel-type rotation of polarization across the wall is shown.

RESUMO

Gallium ferrite, Ga(2-x)Fe(x)O(3) (GFO), is a promising magnetoelectric material as it exhibits both magnetic and electric orders close to room temperature. Here, we report a temperature-dependent investigation of GFO thin films with x = 1.0 and 1.4 by using Raman scattering. Our investigation suggests the absence of a structural phase transition of both films in the investigated 90-500 K temperature range, which is similar to earlier observations on bulk samples. We note, however, the occurrence of weak anomalies in the temperature-dependent band position of some phonons, which we attribute to spin-phonon coupling as the anomalies occur close to the Néel temperature of the materials.
