RESUMO

The BCN-heterocyclic B-N chain compounds, the sodium and potassium salts of 3 and 4 anions (Na3, Na4, and K4), were synthesized by reactions of ethane 1,2-diamineborane (BH3NH2CH2CH2NH2BH3, 1) and propane 1,2-diamineborane (BH3NH2CH2CH2CH2NH2BH3, 2) with MH (M = Na and K). Then, the neutral B-N chain compounds 5 and 6 were prepared with dehydrogenation of [NH4]3 and [NH4]4, formed by metathesis reactions of Na3 and Na4 with NH4Cl or NH4SCN, respectively. Compounds 7 and 8, analog 5, were also prepared using pyridine and 4-methoxypyridine instead of NH3 in 5. These synthesized compounds were characterized spectroscopically, and the singe-crystal structures of the Na3·18-crown-6 and K4·18-crown-6 adducts were determined. Furthermore, the reactions of Na3 and Na4 with cationic B-N chain compounds, [NH3BH2NH3]Cl and [NH3BH2NH2BH2NH3]Cl, could not form longer BCN-heterocyclic B-N chain. The solubility of metal hydrides, the ability for proton abstracting, the basicity of Lewis bases, and the chelate effect may influence these reactions even though the reaction mechanism is not fully understood.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and summarize literature pertaining to evidence of peripheral arterial catheterization in adults, and to provide a reference for clinical practice. METHODS: We undertook a systematic review of literature on the removal of peripheral arterial manometric catheters in adult patients from various sources such as UpToDate, BMJ, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), Medlive, Cochrane Library, Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Evidence-based Health Care Center Database, CINAHL, PubMed, Wanfang Data, VIP, and other databases. The retrieval time was set as from the establishment of the database till August 30, 2021. We screened the studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria, evaluated their quality, and retrieved and summarized such articles. RESULTS: The review included 8 articles: 1 clinical decision, 3 guidelines, 2 evidence summaries, 1 systematic review, and 1 expert consensus. In all, 17 pieces of strong evidence were collected and extracted based on the following 5 dimensions: assessment of removal timing, preparation before removal, removal procedure, compression time, and key points after removal. CONCLUSIONS: The removal of a peripheral arterial manometry catheter requires careful consideration by medical professionals. In order to increase the removal standardization rate and decrease the incidence of clinical complications, standardized procedures and training need to be developed.

The performance of bearings plays a pivotal role in determining the dependability and security of rotating machinery. In intricate systems demanding exceptional reliability and safety, the ability to accurately forecast fault occurrences during operation holds profound significance. Such predictions serve as invaluable guides for crafting well-considered reliability strategies and executing maintenance practices aimed at enhancing reliability. In the real operational life of bearings, fault information often gets submerged within the noise. Furthermore, employing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks for time series prediction necessitates the configuration of appropriate parameters. Manual parameter selection is often a time-consuming process and demands substantial prior knowledge. In order to ensure the reliability of bearing operation, this article investigates the application of three advanced techniques-Maximum Correlation Kurtosis Deconvolution (MCKD), Multi-Scale Permutation Entropy (MPE), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks-for the prediction of the remaining useful life (RUL) of rolling bearings. The improved sparrow search algorithm (ISSA) is employed for configuring parameters in the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network. Each technique's principles, methodologies, and applications are comprehensively reviewed, offering insights into their respective strengths and limitations. Case studies and experimental evaluations are presented to assess their performance in RUL prediction. Findings reveal that MCKD enhances fault signatures, MPE captures complexity, and LSTM excels in modeling temporal patterns. The root mean square error of the prediction results is 0.007. The fusion of these techniques offers a comprehensive approach to RUL prediction, leveraging their unique attributes for more accurate and reliable predictions.

Bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) exhibits a number of important characteristics. RNA-seq analysis revealed that the BPI expression was increased in platelets of (non)ST-elevated myocardial infarction (NSTEMI/STEMI) patients. Activated platelets can induce NETosis which may be accompanied by the release of myeloperoxidase-DNA (MPO-DNA) and S100A8/A9. This study investigated the plasma BPI levels in myocardial infarction patients and its correlation with MPO-DNA and S100A8/A9. This prospective study recruited 80 control individuals, as well as 63 NSTEMI and 59 STEMI patients who were admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College for coronary angiography (CAG) and/or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between May 1, 2020 and August 31, 2020. Demographic and clinical characteristics, clinical indicators, hs-CRP, IL-1ß, MPO-DNA (a circulated marker of NETs), circulating levels of S100A8/A9 and BPI were measured from each individual. The severity of coronary lesions was evaluated by the Gensini score, based on the results of the CAG. Pearson's or spearman's correlation was used to examine the correlation between BPI and the above-mentioned parameters, as well as the severity of coronary artery disease. Linear regression analysis was applied to identify the independent predictive factors of BPI. Received operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of plasma BPI for MI. The plasma BPI levels increased by 8.76 times in the STEMI group and 5.38 times in the NSTEMI group compared to the control group. The plasma level of hs-CRP and IL-1ß in both STEMI and NSTEMI groups were also significantly higher than the control group. In addition, the plasma levels of MPO-DNA and S100A8/A9 in the STEMI and NSTEMI groups were significantly higher than the control group. Plasma levels of BPI were positively correlated with IL-1ß, hs-CRP, MPO-DNA and S100A8/A9. The correlation between BPI and the severity of coronary artery disease was also significant. The optimal cutoff value of plasma BPI was 35.1705 ng/ml for MI patients from the ROC curve analysis. Plasma BPI levels are increased in myocardial infarction patients and positively correlated with MPO-DNA and S100A8/A9. Plasma BPI level may serve as a potential biomarker of myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Studies have found that circular RNAs (circRNAs) play key roles in cardiovascular diseases. However, the function of circROBO2 in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the pathogenesis of circROBO2 in AMI. METHODS: qRT-PCR and Western blot were used to determine the expression levels of circROBO2, miR-1184, and TRADD in AMI and sham-operated mouse models at mRNA and protein level, respectively. The relationship among miR-1184, circROBO2 and TRADD was evaluated by RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) analysis and luciferase reporter gene analysis. The roles of circROBO2, miR-1184, and TRADD in myocardial cell apoptosis were evaluated using flow cytometry. Ultrasound echocardiography, serum creatine kinase MB (CK-MB) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), myocardial infarction area, and myocardial cell apoptosis were measured to examine the effects of circROBO2 on myocardial injury. RESULTS: The expression levels of miR-1184 were significantly reduced, and the expression levels of circROBO2 and TRADD were significantly increased in MI group. CircROBO2 acted as a sponge for miR-1184 by upregulating the expression of TRADD. In addition, overexpression of miR-1184 enhanced the protective effect of knockdown of circROBO2 by partially inhibiting the expression of TRADD in vivo and in vitro. CONCLUSION: Knockdown of circROBO2 reduced the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes by increasing the expression levels of miR-1184, which in turn decreased the expression levels of TRADD in the myocardium post-MI.

The favorable effect of simvastatin on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) has been well defined despite the unknown etiology of PAH. However, whether simvastatin exerts similar effects on PAH induced right heart failure (RHF) remains to be determined. We aimed to investigate the function of simvastatin in PAH induced RHF. Rats in the RHF and simvastatin groups were injected intraperitoneally with monocrotaline to establish PAH-induced RHF model. The expression of miR-21-5p in rat myocardium was detected and miR-21-5p expression was inhibited using antagomiRNA. The effect of simvastatin on hemodynamic indexes, ventricular remodeling of myocardial tissues, myocardial energy metabolism, and calmodulin was explored. Dual-luciferase reporter system was used to verify the binding relationship between miR-21-5p and Smad7. In addition, the regulatory role of simvastatin in Smad7, TGFBR1 and Smad2/3 was investigated. Simvastatin treatment improved hemodynamic condition, myocardial tissue remodeling, and myocardial energy metabolism, as well as increasing calmodulin expression in rats with PAH-induced RHF. After simvastatin treatment, the expression of miR-21-5p in myocardium of rats was decreased significantly. miR-21-5p targeted Smad7 and inhibited the expression of Smad7. Compared with RHF rats, the expressions of TGFBR1 and Smad2/3 in myocardium of simvastatin-treated rats were decreased significantly. Collectively, we provided evidence that simvastatin can protect ATPase activity and maintain myocardial ATP energy reserve through the miR-21-5p/Smad/TGF-ß axis, thus ameliorating PAH induced RHF.

BACKGROUND: N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) is a functional metabolite involved in coronary artery disease (CAD). We aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum Neu5Ac and the risk and prognosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in a real-world prospective study. METHODS: Patients with suspected ACS who underwent coronary angiography were included. Serum Neu5Ac was measured at admission. Coronary lesion severity was evaluated by Gensini Score. GRACE risk stratification was performed at admission. Major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) were recorded during follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 766 patients, including 537 with unstable angina (UAP), 100 with myocardial infarction (MI), and 129 without CAD were included. The circulating Neu5Ac level was significantly higher in patients with MI (median [1QR]: 297[220, 374] ng/ml) than in those with UAP (227 [114, 312] ng/ml) or without CAD (207 [114, 276] ng/ml; both p < 0.001). Serum level of Neu5Ac was positively correlated with age, hypertension, serum uric acid, creatinine, MB isoform of creatine kinase (CK-MB), and Gensini score (all p < 0.05). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that a higher serum Neu5Ac was potentially associated with MI and high-risk GRACE stratification in ACS patients. Logistic analysis identified only elevated serum Neu5Ac as an independent predictor of MACEs in these patients (odds ratio [OR]: 1.003, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.002-1.005, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Serum Neu5Ac is associated with myocardial injury, GRACE risk category, and prognosis in ACS patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of activating aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) on TASK-1 two-pore potassium channel in myocardial injury of diabetic rats.
 Methods: Diabetic rats were induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (55 mg/kg). The diabetic rats were divided into 4 groups: normal group, diabetes at 4th week (DM4W) group, diabetes at 8th week (DM8W) group, and diabetes at 8th week+low concentration of ethanol intervention (DM8W+EtOH) group. The cardiac function of rats was determined by cardiac ultrasonography. The content of hydroxyproline was detected by ELISA. The appearance of myocardial morphous and positive material were observed by HE and PAS staining. The protein expression of TASK-1 was detected by Western blot. Whole-cell patch clamp technique was used to record the action potential duration at 30% and 90% repolarization (APD30, APD90) and two-pore potassium channel TASK-1 current in rat ventricular myocytes. Meanwhile, according to the sensitive electrophysiological characteristics of the potassium channel to acid and base, whether it is two-port potassium channel TASK-1current can be determined.
 Results: Compared with the N group, end-diastole left ventricular diameter (LVIDd), end-systolic left ventricular diameter (LVIDs), hydroxyproline content, TASK-1 protein expression increased, APD30 and APD90 extend, left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and TASK-1 current decreased (all P<0.01) in the DM4W group and the DM8W group. HE staining showed that myocardial cell and fiber arrangement disorder, myocyte hypertrophy, myocardial widened and PAS staining reveals that positive material increased in the DM4W group and the DM8W group. Compared with the DM4W group, these changs are more obvious in DM8W rats (P<0.01 or P<0.05). Compared with the DM8W group, in the DM8W+EtOH group, the left ventricular function was restored, the hydroxyproline content and expression of TASK-1 protein were decreased, the TASK-1 current was increased, and APD30 and APD90 were shortened (all P<0.01). HE staining showed that myocardial cell injury was ameliorate and PAS staining showed decreased deposition of positive substances in the DM8W+EtOH group.
 Conclusion: Activation of aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 by low concentration of ethanol can reduce myocardial injury and fibrosis caused by diabetes, and its mechanism may be related to the changes of the two-por potassium channel TASK-1.

Eph receptors are a subfamily of receptor tyrosine kinases. Eph receptor-mediated forward and ephrin ligand-mediated reverse signalings are termed bidirectional signaling. Increasing evidence shows that Eph/ephrin signaling regulates cell migration, adhesion, morphological changes, differentiation, proliferation and survival through cell-cell communication. Some recent studies have started to implicate Eph/ephrin signaling in tumorigenesis, metastasis, and angiogenesis. Previous studies have shown that EphB1 receptor and its ephrin ligands are expressed in the central nervous system. EphB1/ephrin signaling plays an important role in the regulation of synapse formation and maturation, migration of neural progenitors, establishment of tissue patterns, and the development of immune organs. Besides, various recent studies have detected the abnormal expression of EphB1 receptor in different brain tumors. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of EphB1/ephrins signaling in the development of these tumors are not fully understood. This review focuses on EphB1 that has both tumor-suppressing and -promoting roles in some brain tumors. Understanding the intracellular mechanisms of EphB1 in tumorigenesis and metastasis of brain tumors might provide a foundation for the development of EphB1-targeted therapies.

PURPOSE: Type I collagen is one of the most abundant components of extracellular matrix. We previously illustrated that murine fibrosarcoma L929 cells grew well on type I collagen gel and escaped from TNFα-induced cell death. In this study, we investigated the mechanism underlying the protective effect of collagen gel. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used western blot, confocal microscopy, MTT assay and flow cytometry by introducing fluorescence staining to determine the expression levels of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), inhibitory ratio and autophagy. RESULTS: L929 cells on collagen gel showed higher expression of NF-κB in the nucleus. Inhibition of NF-κB with pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate hydrochloride (PDTC) or knockdown by NF-κB-siRNA canceled the protective effect of collagen gel on L929 cells from TNFα-induced death, suggesting for the role of NF-κB in the protection from cell death. We found a new aspect of the effect of PDTC on L929 cells cultured on collagen gel. PDTC alone without TNFα induced apoptosis in the L929 cells cultured on collagen gel but not the cells on plastic dish. The apoptosis induction of the L929 cells cultured on collagen gel with PDTC was repressed by inhibiting autophagy with chloroquine, an autophagy inhibitor, suggesting that autophagy contributes to the death induced by the treatment with PDTC. Possible underlying mechanism of this finding is discussed. CONCLUSION: NF-κB played an important role in protecting the L929 cells cultured on collagen gel from TNFα-induced death.

Primary cilium is a cellular antenna, signalling as a sensory organelle. Numerous pathological manifestation is associated with change of its length. Although the interaction between autophagy and primary cilia has been suggested, the role of autophagy in primary cilia length is largely unknown. In this study the primary cilia were immunostained and observed by using confocal fluorescence microscopy, and we found that silibinin, a natural flavonoid, shortened the length of primary cilia, meanwhile it also induced autophagy in 3T3-L1 cells. This study was designed to investigate the significance of silibinin-induced autophagy in primary ciliary structure in confluent mouse embryo fibroblast 3T3-L1 cells. Either blocking the autophagic flux with pre-treatment with the autophagy inhibitor, 3-methyladenine (3-MA), or transfection of siRNA targeting LC3 inhibited the reduction of cilia length caused by silibinin exposure. Autophagy induced by silibinin decreased expressions of the cilia-associated proteins, such as IFT88, KIF3a and Ac-tubulin, while 3-MA restored it, indicating that autophagy induced by silibinin led to a reduction of primary cilia length. Histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6), which was suggested as a mediator of autophagy, was up-regulated by silibinin in a time-dependent manner. In addition, 3T3-L1 cells treated with siRNA against HDAC6 had a reduced autophagic level and were protected from silibinin-induced cilia shortening. Taken together, we conclude that the HDAC6-mediated autophagy negatively regulates primary cilia length during silibinin treatment and has the potential to serve as a therapeutic target for primary cilia-associated ciliopathies. These findings thus provide new information about the potential link between autophagy and primary cilia.

PURPOSE: Gelatin has been considered to exist as intermediate substance of collagen catabolism in tissue remodeling or under inflammatory conditions. We have initiated the study on possible biological functions of gelatin that can exist temporally and locally under the conditions of remodeling and inflammation Materials and methods: To this purpose, we investigated cell proliferation and survival on gelatin-coated dishes and the response to tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα)-induced cytotoxicity in L929 cells. Autophagy level, ATP level, and ROS generation are examined. RESULTS: L929 cells detached from the gelatin-coated dishes and formed multicellular aggregates. TNFα-induced cytotoxicity in L929 cells was inhibited by gelatin-coating culture. The cells on gelatin-coated dishes showed reduced cellular ATP levels and increased adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation, leading to increased ROS generation and autophagy. CONCLUSION: This study showed that gelatin-coated culture protected L929 cells from TNFα-induced cytotoxicity and suggested for a possible pathophysiological function of gelatin in regulating cellular functions.

Murine fibrosarcoma L929 cells have been used to test efficacy of proinflammatory cytokine TNFα. In the present study, we reported on protective effect of type I collagen gel used as L929 cell culture. L929 cell grew and proliferated well on collagen gel. However, the L929 cells exhibited cobblestone-like morphology which was much different from the spread fusiform shape when cultured on conventional cell dishes as well as the cells tended to aggregate. On conventional cell culture dishes, the cells treated with TNFα became round in shape and eventually died in a necroptotic manner. The cells cultured on collagen gel, however, were completely unaffected. TNFα treatment was reported to induce autophagy in L929 cells on the plastic dish, and therefore we investigated the effect of collagen gel on induction of autophagy. The results indicated that autophagy induced by TNFα treatment was much reduced when the cells were cultured on collagen gel. In conclusion, type I collagen gel protected L929 cell from TNFα-induced cell death.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the DNA methylation-related alteration induced by trichloroethylene (TCE) in human hepatic L-02 cells (L-02 cells) and SET deficient cells, and reveal the role of SET on the mechanisms in TCE-induced epigenetic pathway. METHODS: The L-02 cells and pre-established SET deficient cells were treated with different TCE concentrations, and the changes of total cell viability, DNA methylation level and DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) activity were measured, respectively. In addition, the TCE-induced alteration in the protein expression of DNMT1, DNMT3a and DNMT3b were analyzed by Western blotting. RESULTS: After treatment with TCE for 24 h, the cell proliferation level was significantly decreased in both cell lines. When concentrations of TCE were 0, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 mmol/L, the proliferation levels of L-02 cells were 100.00±2.70, 83.34±2.38, 75.56±4.51, 71.67±2.77 and 66.67±1.63, respectively (F = 58.29, P < 0.001); the cell proliferation levels of SET deficient cells were 101.12±1.67, 85.01±2.33, 79.44±1.67, 78.337±3.89 and 76.11±3.33, respectively (F = 42.41, P < 0.001). When concentration of TCE reached 4.0 mmol/L, the difference of cell proliferation level between two groups was statistically significant (t = -3.51; P = 0.013). After treated by TCE for 24 h, the global DNA methylation significantly decreased in both cell lines (F value was 212.87 and 79.32, respectively, P < 0.001). The difference between two groups was not statistically significant. After treated by TCE for 24 h, the methyltransferases activities were significantly decreased in both cell cells (F values were 77.92 and 113.80, respectively, P-0.001). The SET deficiency could inhibit the decrease of methyltransferases activity under TCE treatment. When the concentration of TCE reached 8.0 mmol/L, the enzymatic activity of L-02 cells and SET deficient cells decreased to 67.61%±2.85% and 72.97%± 1.94%, respectively. The difference between two groups was statistically significant (t = -3.94, P = 0.008). After treated with TCE for 24 h, concentrations of TCE were 0, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 mmol/L, and the relative protein levels of DNMT1 in normal L-02 cells increased significantly to 1.00±0.03, 1.28±0.04, 1.20±0.04, 1.62±0.05, 1.43±0.04 (F = 103.00, P < 0.001); In SET deficient cells, the expressions of DNMT1 were 1.00±0.04, 0.96±0.02, 1.19±0.05, 0.85±0.03, 0.83±0.03, which was significantly down-regulated under TCE treatment (F = 44.18, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: SET deficiency can significantly attenuate the TCE-induced decreases of cell viability and DNMTs activity, as well as alteration of protein expression of DNMT1 in L-02 cells, which indicated that SET was involved in the mechanism of TCE-induced cytotoxicity and epigenetic pathway in L-02 cells.

Immobilized photocatalysts represent a promising candidate for the wastewater treatments due to their good reusability, high stability and low eco-risk. Mass transfer within the immobilized catalytic bed is a crucial process that determines the contacting, adsorption, and degradation kinetics in the photodegradation. In this study, a floating catalytic foam (FCF) with a prominent pumping effect was designed to promote mass transfer. The polyurethane foam immobilized with rGO/TiO2/ultrathin-g-C3N4 photocatalyst (PRTCN) was prepared by a simple dip-coating and Uv-light aging process. It was found that the hydrophilic-hydrophobic interfaces could not only contribute to the floating of the catalyst but also establish a temperature gradient across the floating immobilized catalyst. In addition, the temperature gradient induced convection could serve as a built-in pump to effectively promote the diffusion and adsorption of target antibiotic molecules during the photocatalytic process. Therefore, the PRTCN demonstrated a high photodegradation and mineralization efficiency with excellent reusability and anti-interference capability. Moreover, the photodegradation mechanism and the intermediates' toxicity of norfloxacin were detailly investigated by ultra-high resolution electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometry, density functional theory simulation and ECOSAR estimation. This work proposed a facile and sustainable strategy to enhance the mass transfer problem on immobilized photocatalysts, which could promote the application of the immobilized photocatalysts in the real water-treatment scenarios.

Background: Neutrophils play important roles in atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis. Bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) is mainly expressed in the granules of human neutrophils in response to inflammatory stress. This observational, cross-sectional study investigated the plasma level of BPI in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and its correlation with blood neutrophil counts and circulating inflammatory biomarkers. Methods: A total of 367 patients who had acute chest pain and who were admitted to our hospital for coronary angiography (CAG) and/or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from May 1, 2020 to August 31, 2020 were recruited. Among them, 256 had a cardiac troponin value above the 99th percentile upper reference limit and were diagnosed with ACS. The remaining patients (n = 111) were classified as non-ACS. The TIMI and GRACE scores were calculated at admission. The Gensini score based on CAG was used to determine atherosclerotic burden. Plasma levels of interleukin (IL)-1ß, myeloperoxidase-DNA (MPO-DNA), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), S100A8/A9, and BPI were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Correlations of plasma BPI levels with examination scores and levels of circulating inflammatory biomarkers were explored. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to determine the diagnostic efficacy of BPI for ACS and myocardial infarction. Results: Patients in the ACS group showed significantly higher plasma BPI levels compared to the non-ACS group (46.42 ± 16.61 vs. 16.23 ± 6.19 ng/mL, p < 0.05). Plasma levels of IL-1ß, MPO-DNA, hs-CRP, and S100A8/A9 in the ACS group were also significantly higher than those in the non-ACS group (all p < 0.05). In addition, plasma BPI levels were positively correlated with the TIMI, GRACE, and Gensini scores (r = 0.176, p = 0.003; r = 0.320, p < 0.001; r = 0.263, p < 0.001, respectively) in patients with ACS. Plasma BPI levels were also positively correlated with blood neutrophil counts (r = 0.266, p < 0.001) and levels of circulating inflammatory biomarkers (IL-1ß, r = 0.512; MPO-DNA, r = 0.452; hs-CRP, r = 0.554; S100A8/A9, r = 0.434; all p < 0.001) in patients with ACS. ROC curve analysis revealed that the diagnostic efficacy of BPI for ACS was not inferior to that of IL-1ß, MPO-DNA, hs-CRP, S100A8/A9, or blood neutrophil counts. ROC analysis also showed that the diagnostic efficacy of BPI for myocardial infarction was not inferior to that of creatine kinase (CK)-MB or cardiac troponin I. Conclusion: BPI is associated with systemic inflammation in ACS and may be involved in the process of atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis. The potential of BPI as a prognostic and diagnostic biomarker for ACS should be investigated in clinical settings.

A high-glucose environment is involved in the progression of diabetes mellitus (DM). This study aims to explore the regulatory effects of quercetin (QUE) on autophagy and apoptosis after myocardial injury in rats with DM. The type 2 DM rat models were constructed using low-dose streptozotocin (STZ) treatment combined with a high-carbohydrate (HC) diet in vivo. Compared with the control group, the body weight was decreased, whereas blood pressure, blood glucose, and the LVW/BW ratio were increased in the diabetic group. The results showed that the myocardial fibers were disordered in the diabetic group. Moreover, we found that the myocardial collagen fibers, PAS-positive cells, and apoptosis were increased, whereas the mitochondrial structure was destroyed and autophagic vacuoles were significantly reduced in the diabetic group compared with the control group. The expression levels of autophagy-related proteins LC3 and Beclin1 were decreased, whereas the expression levels of P62, Caspae-3, and Bax/Bcl-2 were increased in the diabetic group in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, QUE treatment alleviated the cellular oxidative stress reaction under high-glucose environments. The results of immunoprecipitation (IP) showed that the autophagy protein Beclin1 was bound to Bcl-2, and the binding capacity increased in the HG group, whereas it decreased after QUE treatment, suggesting that QUE inhibited the binding capacity between Beclin1 and Bcl-2, thus leading to the preservation of Beclin1-induced autophagy. In addition, the blood pressure, blood glucose, and cardiac function of rats were improved following QUE treatment. In conclusion, QUE suppressed diabetic myocardial injury and ameliorated cardiac function by regulating myocardial autophagy and inhibition of apoptosis in diabetes through the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is an emerging zoonotic virus in the alphavirus genus. It can be transmitted to humans due to spillover from equid-mosquito cycles. The symptoms caused by VEEV include fever, headache, myalgia, nausea, and vomiting. It can also cause encephalitis in severe cases. The evolutionary features of VEEV are largely unknown. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed the codon usage pattern of VEEV by computing a variety of indicators, such as effective number of codons (ENc), codon adaptation index (CAI), relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU), on 130 VEEV coding sequences retrieved from GenBank. The results showed that the codon usage bias of VEEV is relatively low. ENc-GC3s plot, neutrality plot, and CAI-ENc correlation analyses supported that translational selection plays an important role in shaping the codon usage pattern of VEEV whereas the mutation pressure has a minor influence. Analysis of RSCU values showed that most of the preferred codons in VEEV are C/G-ended. Analysis of dinucleotide composition found that all CG- and UA-containing codons are not preferentially used. Phylogenetic analysis showed that VEEV isolates can be clustered into three genera and evolutionary force affects the codon usage pattern. Furthermore, a correspondence analysis (COA) showed that aromaticity and hydrophobicity as well as geographical distribution also have certain effects on the codon usage variation of VEEV, suggesting the possible involvement of translational selection. Overall, the codon usage of VEEV is comparatively slight and translational selection might be the main factor that shapes the codon usage pattern of VEEV. This study will promote our understanding about the evolution of VEEV and its host adaption, and might provide some clues for preventing the cross-species transmission of VEEV.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) with a high energy density have been regarded as a promising energy storage device to harness unstable but clean energy from wind, tide, solar cells, and so on. However, LSBs still suffer from the disadvantages of the notorious shuttle effect of polysulfides and low sulfur utilization, which greatly hider their final commercialization. Biomasses represent green, abundant and renewable resources for the production of carbon materials to address the aforementioned issues by taking advantages of their intrinsic hierarchical porous structures and heteroatom-doping sites, which could attribute to the strong physical and chemical adsorptions as well as excellent catalytic performances of LSBs. Therefore, many efforts have been devoted to improving the performances of biomass-derived carbons from the aspects of exploring new biomass resources, optimizing the pyrolysis method, developing effective modification strategies, or achieving further understanding about their working principles in LSBs. This review firstly introduces the structures and working principles of LSBs and then summarizes recent developments in research on carbon materials employed in LSBs. Particularly, this review focuses on recent progresses in the design, preparation and application of biomass-derived carbons as host or interlayer materials in LSBs. Moreover, outlooks on the future research of LSBs based on biomass-derived carbons are discussed.

The two possible formation mechanisms of the B10H142- anion are proposed, in which the NH2BH3- anion acts as a proton abstractor and a hydride donor. Furthermore, the B10H13- and B10H15- intermediates were detected.
