RESUMO

Rosmarinic acid (RA) is an important medicinal metabolite and a potent food antioxidant. We discovered that exposure to high light intensifies the accumulation of RA in the leaves of perilla (Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt). However, the molecular mechanism underlying RA synthesis in response to high light stress remains poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a comprehensive analysis employing transcriptomic sequencing, transcriptional activation, and genetic transformation techniques. High light treatment for 1 and 48 h resulted in the upregulation of 592 and 1,060 genes, respectively. Among these genes, three structural genes and 93 transcription factors exhibited co-expression. Notably, NAC family member PfNAC2, GBF family member PfGBF3, and cinnamate-4-hydroxylase gene PfC4H demonstrated significant co-expression and upregulation under high light stress. Transcriptional activation analysis revealed that PfGBF3 binds to and activates the PfNAC2 promoter. Additionally, both PfNAC2 and PfGBF3 bind to the PfC4H promoter, thereby positively regulating PfC4H expression. Transient overexpression of PfNAC2, PfGBF3, and PfC4H, as well as stable transgenic expression of PfNAC2, led to a substantial increase in RA accumulation in perilla. Consequently, PfGBF3 acts as a photosensitive factor that positively regulates PfNAC2 and PfC4H, while PfNAC2 also regulates PfC4H to promote RA accumulation under high light stress. The elucidation of the regulatory mechanism governing RA accumulation in perilla under high light conditions provides a foundation for developing a high-yield RA system and a model to understand light-induced metabolic accumulation.

BACKGROUND: Increased inflammation in the liver during ethanol exposure is a major feature of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). An important contributing component to the development of ALD is the inflammatory response brought on by immunological response, however the connection between individual circulating cytokines and ALD is still unclear. To ascertain the causation, we conducted a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization research. METHODS: We extracted 41 cytokines and growth factors of 8293 Europeans and ALD cases of the same ethnicity (1416 cases and 217,376 controls) from the Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) database for two-sample bidirectional MR analysis. RESULTS: Our analyses suggest that higher interleukin-7 (IL-7) levels are associated with an increased risk of ALD (p = 0.028, OR = 1.191,95% CI = 1.019-1.392), while tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a protective factor for ALD (p = 0.032, OR = 0.863, 95% CI = 0.754-0.988) which can reduce the risk of disease occurrence. In addition, genetically predicted ALD does not affect the expression of circulating cytokines regulators. CONCLUSIONS: Our study supports that cytokines play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of ALD. To determine the mechanisms and pathways of action of these biomarkers, further basic research is required to ensure their clinical suitability for preventing and treating ALD.

OBJECTIVES: Albuminuria and serum adiponectin levels are factors that have been associated with the development of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes mellitus. Here we investigated the relationship between serum adiponectin levels and aortic stiffness in nondialysis diabetic kidney disease patients with stage 3-5 chronic kidney disease. METHODS: Fasting blood samples were obtained from 80 nondialysis diabetic kidney disease patients with stage 3-5 chronic kidney disease. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) was measured using applanation tonometry; cfPWV values of >10 m/s were defined as aortic stiffness. Serum adiponectin levels were determined by enzyme immunoassay. RESULTS: Forty-two patients (52.5%) with nondialysis diabetic kidney disease were diagnosed with aortic stiffness. The patients in this group were older (p = 0.011), had higher systolic blood pressure (p = 0.002) and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratios (p = 0.013), included fewer females (p = 0.024), and had lower serum adiponectin (p = 0.001) levels than those in the control group. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that serum adiponectin was independently associated with aortic stiffness (odds ratio = 0.930, 95% confidence interval: 0.884-0.978, p = 0.005) and also positively correlated with cfPWV values by multivariable linear regression (ß = -0.309, p = 0.002) in nondialysis diabetic kidney disease patients. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggested that serum adiponectin levels could be used to predict aortic stiffness in nondialysis diabetic kidney disease patients with stage 3-5 chronic kidney disease.

An integrated digital magnetic resonance imaging spectrometer was proposed in this study. By using the FPGA chip Artix7 200T, timing control, data processing, digital frequency conversion and phase control were implemented into a single-chip, thus effectively improved timing accuracy and phase accuracy, while avoided the structural design complexity caused by multi-board connection and improved system integration and imaging quality.

We aim to test whether the association between glucose control and cognitive function still holds true in elderly patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and Alzheimer disease (AD) under health-care case management. We enrolled 100 patients with DM (mean age: 74.6 years; male: 49%) and 102 patients with AD (mean age: 77.9 years; male: 41.2%) consecutively from the Diabetes Shared Care Program and the memory clinic. These patients were followed up every 3 months with scheduled examinations. Most patients with AD were at early stage and DM was a common comorbidity (n = 42). In the DM group, there were 76 patients with subjective cognitive decline and 19 patients with mild cognitive impairment, but none sought further consultation. After adjusting for age, sex, education, and comorbidity, higher levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) were not associated with lower Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores in the DM group (coefficient: 0.03; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.44 to 0.50) and lower MMSE scores were not associated with higher HbA1C in the AD group either (coefficient: -0.05; 95% CI: -0.11 to 0.01). When additionally accounting for the variability of HbA1C in the DM group, higher standard deviation of HbA1C was associated with poor clock drawing test scores, but not MMSE. The coexistence of AD-DM was common, but the association between hyperglycemia and cognitive impairment was not seen in patients under regular health monitoring.

Proteases from halotolerant and halophilic microorganisms were found in traditional Chinese fish sauce. In this study, 30 fungi were isolated from fermented fish sauce in five growth media based on their morphology. However, only one strain, YL-1, which was identified as Penicillium citrinum by internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence analysis, can produce alkaline protease. This study is the first to report that a protease-producing fungus strain was isolated and identified in traditional Chinese fish sauce. Furthermore, the culture conditions of alkaline protease production by P. citrinum YL-1 in solid-state fermentation were optimized by response surface methodology. First, three variables including peptone, initial pH, and moisture content were selected by Plackett-Burman design as the significant variables for alkaline protease production. The Box-Behnken design was then adopted to further investigate the interaction effects between the three variables on alkaline protease production and determine the optimal values of the variables. The maximal production (94.30 U/mL) of alkaline protease by P. citrinum YL-1 took place under the optimal conditions of peptone, initial pH, and moisture content (v/w) of 35.5 g/L, 7.73, and 136%, respectively.

Although many reports suggested the economic importance of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, few attempts to test the hypothesis that the red imported fire ant-aphid mutualism enhances the occurrence of red imported fire ant on crops, thereby interfering with their flowering and fruiting and affecting their output. To address this problem, we compare the effects of red imported fire ant on the flowering and fruiting of self-pollinating and cross-pollinating crops by field investigations and indoor experiments. In the field, our results revealed that regardless of the aphid interaction, red imported fire ant preferred flowering mungbean plants, and their activities decreased the yields of single plants, total pod number, kernel number, and kernel weight. The interaction of red imported fire ant and aphids generated unfavorable effects on rapeseed yields per plant, total pod number, grain number, grain weight, and thousand-kernel weight and stimulated an elevated proportion of malformed seeds. However, the differences were not significant if only red imported fire ant was present. In the laboratory, although red imported fire ant display no apparent preference toward the seedlings of mungbean or rapeseed, the ants clearly favor the flowering plants of mungbeans. Therefore, this study indicated that one of the main mechanisms whereby red imported fire ants affect the crop yield is by compromising the reproduction processes.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects and underlying mechanisms of ursodeoxycholic acid on human hepatoma cells. METHODS: HepG2 and SMMC-7721 HCC cell lines were respectively treated with ursodeoxycholic acid. And cell proliferation, apoptosis and the expression of Bax/Bcl-2 gene were detected by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT), inverted microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, flow cytometry and Western blot. RESULTS: Ursodeoxycholic acid significantly inhibited the proliferation of human hepatoma cells in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of HepG2 and SMMC-7721 were 397.3 and 387.7 µg/ml respectively after a 48-hour treatment of 400 µg /ml ursodeoxycholic acid. And it also induced the apoptosis of HepG2 and SMMC-7721 cells, up-regulated Bax gene and down-regulated Bcl-2 gene. CONCLUSION: Ursodeoxycholic acid inhibits the proliferation of hepatoma cells and induce apoptosis by mitochondrial-mediated pathway.

MicroRNAs (miRNA) are small noncoding RNAs that play a crucial as molecular regulators in lipid metabolism in various oil crops. Perilla (Perilla frutescens) is a specific oil crop known for its high alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3n3, ALA) content (>65 %) in their seed oils. In view of the regulatory mechanism of miRNAs in perilla remains unclear, we conducted miRNAs and transcriptome sequencing in two cultivars with distinct lipid compositions. A total of 525 unique miRNAs, including 142 differentially expressed miRNAs was identified in perilla seeds. The 318 miRNAs targeted 7,761 genes. Furthermore, we identified 112 regulated miRNAs and their 610 target genes involved in lipid metabolism. MiR159b and miR167a as the core nodes to regulate the expression of genes in oil biosynthesis (e.g., KAS, FATB, GPAT, FAD, DGK, LPAAT) and key regulatory TFs (e.g., MYB, ARF, DOF, SPL, NAC, TCP, and bHLH). The 1,219 miRNA-mRNA regulation modules were confirmed through degradome sequencing. Notably, pf-miR159b-MYBs and pf-miR167a-ARFs regulation modules were confirmed. They exhibited significantly different expression levels in two cultivars and believed to play important roles in oil biosynthesis in perilla seeds. This provides valuable insights into the functional analysis of miRNA-regulated lipid metabolism in perilla seeds.

Circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) significantly influences endothelial function. This study assessed the correlation between serum 25(OH)D and endothelial function using the vascular reactivity index (VRI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Fasting blood samples from 102 T2DM participants and VRI were assessed. Patients were divided into three categories based on VRI: low (VRI < 1.0), intermediate (1.0 ≤ VRI < 2.0), and good (VRI ≥ 2.0). Among these patients, 30 (29.4%) had poor, 39 (38.2%) had intermediate, and 33 (32.4%) exhibited good vascular reactivity. Higher serum fasting glucose (p = 0.019), glycated hemoglobin (p = 0.009), and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (p = 0.006) were associated, while lower prevalence of hypertension (p = 0.029), lower systolic blood pressure (p = 0.027), lower diastolic blood pressure (p < 0.001), and lower circulation 25(OH)D levels (p < 0.001) were associated with poor vascular reactivity. Significant independent associations between diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.002) and serum 25(OH)D level (p < 0.001) and VRI were seen in T2DM patients according to multivariable forward stepwise linear regression analysis. Serum 25(OH)D positively correlated with VRI values, and lower levels of serum 25(OH)D were linked to endothelial dysfunction in T2DM patients.

BACKGROUND: Liver fibrosis is a formidable global medical challenge, with no effective clinical treatment currently available. Yinhuang granule (YHG) is a proprietary Chinese medicine comprising Scutellariae Radix and Lonicerae Japonicae Flos. It is frequently used for upper respiratory tract infections, pharyngitis, as well as acute and chronic tonsillitis. AIM: To investigate the potential of YHG in alleviating carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis in mice. METHODS: To induce a hepatic fibrosis model in mice, this study involved intraperitoneal injections of 2 mL/kg of CCl4 twice a week for 4 wk. Meanwhile, liver fibrosis mice in the low dose of YHG (0.4 g/kg) and high dose of YHG (0.8 g/kg) groups were orally administered YHG once a day for 4 wk. Serum alanine/aspartate aminotransferase (ALT/AST) activity and liver hydroxyproline content were detected. Sirius red and Masson's trichrome staining assay were conducted. Real-time polymerase chain reaction, western-blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were conducted. Liver glutathione content, superoxide dismutase activity level, reactive oxygen species and protein carbonylation amount were detected. RESULTS: The administration of YHG ameliorated hepatocellular injury in CCl4-treated mice, as reflected by decreased serum ALT/AST activity and improved liver histological evaluation. YHG also attenuated liver fibrosis, evident through reduced liver hydroxyproline content, improvements in Sirius red and Masson's trichrome staining, and lowered serum hyaluronic acid levels. Furthermore, YHG hindered the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and ameliorated oxidative stress injury and inflammation in liver from CCl4-treated mice. YHG prompted the nuclear accumulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and upregulated the expression of Nrf2-dependent downstream antioxidant genes. In addition, YHG promoted mitochondrial biogenesis in liver from CCl4-treated mice, as demonstrated by increased liver adenosine triphosphate content, mitochondrial DNA levels, and the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha and nuclear respiratory factor 1. CONCLUSION: YHG effectively attenuates CCl4-induced liver fibrosis in mice by inhibiting the activation of HSCs, reducing inflammation, alleviating liver oxidative stress damage through Nrf2 activation, and promoting liver mitochondrial biogenesis.

BACKGROUND: The global number of people living with diabetes mellitus (DM) continues to grow. Obesity, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension are independently correlated with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in diabetic patients regardless of differences in race or ethnicity. We aimed to investigate the relationship between serum leptin levels and aortic stiffness in patients with type 2 DM to identify cardiovascular risk at the early stage. METHODS: A total of 128 diabetic patients were enrolled after screening for eligibility at a medical center in Eastern Taiwan. Aortic stiffness was defined as having a carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) of >10 m/s using applanation tonometry. Fasting serum levels of leptin and other associated biomarkers were determined by enzyme immunoassay or biochemical analyses. RESULTS: Forty-six diabetic patients with a cfPWV of >10 m/s were included in the aortic stiffness group. Compared with the control group (n = 82), our aortic stiffness group was significantly older (p = 0.019) and had higher body fat mass (p = 0.002), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (p < 0.001), serum triglyceride (p = 0.02), and serum leptin (p < 0.001). Aortic stiffness was also associated with insulin resistance (p = 0.026) and poorer blood sugar control (higher fasting glucose (p = 0.044) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (p = 0.049)). In the multivariable linear regression analyses examining the correlations between aortic stiffness and clinical variables, we found that age (ß = 0.291; p < 0.001), SBP (ß = 0.176; p = 0.033), logarithmically transformed urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (ß = 0.256; p = 0.002), and serum leptin levels (ß = 0.244; p = 0.002) were independently associated with cfPWV values. The analyses showed that only leptin was correlated with a higher probability of aortic stiffness (odds ratio: 1.055, 95% confidence interval: 1.005-1.107, p = 0.031). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggested that serum leptin is positively associated with aortic stiffness in patients with type 2 DM.

Sclerostin and dickkopf-1 (DKK1), extracellular inhibitors of the canonical Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, have been associated with vascular aging and atherosclerosis. This study aimed to assess the correlation of sclerostin and DKK1 concentrations with endothelial function measured using vascular reactivity index (VRI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Fasting blood samples were collected from 100 patients with T2DM. Endothelial function and VRI were measured using digital thermal monitoring and circulating sclerostin and DKK1 levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. VRI values < 1.0, 1.0-1.9, and > 2.0 indicated poor, intermediate, and good vascular reactivity, respectively. Overall, 30, 38, and 32 patients had poor, intermediate, and good vascular reactivity, respectively. Older age, higher serum glycated hemoglobulin, urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio, and sclerostin as well as lower hypertension prevalence, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were associated with poor VRI. Multivariable forward stepwise linear regression analysis showed that DBP (ß = 0.294, adjusted R2 change = 0.098, P < .001), log-glycated hemoglobin (ß = -0.235, adjusted R2 change = 0.050, P = .002), log-urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ß = -0.342, adjusted R2 change = 0.227, P < .001), and log-sclerostin level (ß = -0.327, adjusted R2 change = 0.101, P < .001) were independently associated with VRI. Serum sclerostin, along with glycated hemoglobin and albumin-to-creatinine ratio, exhibited a negative correlation with VRI, while DBP showed a positive correlation with VRI. These factors can independently predict endothelial dysfunction in patients with T2DM.

Perilla frutescens (L.), a traditional edible and medicinal crop, contains diverse triterpenes with multiple pharmacological properties. However, the biosynthesis of triterpenes in perilla remains rarely revelation. In this study, nine putative 2,3-oxidosqualene cyclase (OSC) genes (PfOSC1-9) were screened from the P. frutescens genome and functionally characterized by heterologous expression. Camelliol C, a triterpenol with pharmacological effect, was first identified as abundant in perilla seeds, and the camelliol C synthase (PfOSC7) was first identified in P. frutescens utilizing a yeast system. In addition, PfOSC2, PfOSC4, and PfOSC9 were identified as cycloartenol, lupeol, and ß-amyrin synthase, respectively. Molecular docking and site-directed mutagenesis revealed that changes in Leu253 of PfOSC4, Ala480 of PfOSC7, and Trp257 of PfOSC9 might lead to variations of catalytic specificity or efficiency. These results will provide key insights into the biosynthetic pathways of triterpenoids and have great significance for germplasm breeding in P. frutescens.

Perilla (Perilla frutescens) is a potential specific oilseed crop with an extremely high α-linolenic acid (ALA) content in its seeds. AP2/ERF transcription factors (TFs) play important roles in multiple biological processes. However, limited information is known about the regulatory mechanism of the AP2/ERF family in perilla's oil accumulation. In this research, we identified 212 AP2/ERF family members in the genome of perilla, and their domain characteristics, collinearity, and sub-genome differentiation were comprehensively analyzed. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that genes encoding key enzymes involved in oil biosynthesis (e.g., ACCs, KASII, GPAT, PDAT and LPAAT) were up-regulated in the high-oil variety. Moreover, the endoplasmic reticulum-localized FAD2 and FAD3 were significantly up-regulated in the high-ALA variety. To investigate the roles of AP2/ERFs in lipid biosynthesis, we conducted a correlation analysis between non-redundant AP2/ERFs and key lipid metabolism genes using WGCNA. A significant correlation was found between 36 AP2/ERFs and 90 lipid metabolism genes. Among them, 12 AP2/ERFs were identified as hub genes and showed significant correlation with lipid synthase genes (e.g., FADs, GPAT and ACSL) and key regulatory TFs (e.g., LEC2, IAA, MYB, UPL3). Furthermore, gene expression analysis identified three AP2/ERFs (WRI, ABI4, and RAVI) potentially playing an important role in the regulation of oil accumulation in perilla. Our study suggests that PfAP2/ERFs are important regulatory TFs in the lipid biosynthesis pathway, providing a foundation for the molecular understanding of oil accumulation in perilla and other oilseed crops.

To investigate the influence of bear bile on rat hepatocarcinoma induced by diethylnitrosamine (DEN), a total of 40 rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: normal control group, model group, and two bear bile treatment groups. The rat liver cancer model was induced by breeding with water containing 100 mg x L(-1) DEN for 14 weeks. The rats of the bear bile groups received bear bile powder (200 or 400 mg x kg(-1)) orally 5 times per week for 18 weeks. The general condition and the body weight of rats were examined every day. After 18 weeks the activities of serum alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and total bilirubin (TBIL) were detected. Meanwhile, the pathological changes of liver tissues were observed after H&E staining. The expression of proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and a-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) in liver tissue were detected by immunohistochemical method. After 4 weeks the body weights of rats in normal group were significantly more than that in other groups (P < 0.05); and that in the two bile groups was significantly more than that in the model group. Compared with normal group, the level of serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase and total bilirubin increased significantly in other groups; compared with model group, these two indexes decreased significantly in two bile groups. Hepatocellular carcinoma occurred in all rats except for normal group; there were classic cirrhosis and cancer in model group while there were mild cirrhosis and high differentiation in two bile groups. There were almost no expressions of PCNA and alpha-SMA in normal group while there were high expressions in model group; the two bile groups had some expressions but were inferior to the model group, and alpha-SMA reduced markedly. It indicated that bear bile restrained the development of liver cancer during DEN inducing rat hepatocarcinoma, which may be related to its depressing hepatic stellate cell activation and relieving hepatic lesion and cirrhosis.

Adiponectin has anti-inflammatory activity against atherosclerosis. Aortic stiffness is a common manifestation of atherosclerosis in diabetes mellitus and elderly persons. This study aimed to evaluate whether low serum adiponectin levels were associated with aortic stiffness in geriatric diabetic patients. Blood samples were obtained from 130 diabetic participants aged ≥ 65 years. We defined high aortic stiffness based on a carotid−femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) of >10 m/s. Circulating adiponectin concentrations were examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Sixty-six participants (50.8%) had aortic stiffness. Patients with aortic stiffness had lower serum adiponectin concentrations than those in the control group (p < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the adiponectin level (odds ratio: 0.939, 95% confidence interval: 0.898−0.981, p = 0.005) was an independent predictor of aortic stiffness in elderly diabetic persons. Multivariate forward stepwise linear regression analysis also demonstrated that the adiponectin level (ß = −0.256, adjusted R2 change = 0.100, p = 0.003) was negatively associated with cfPWV values in older diabetic patients. In conclusion, serum adiponectin is negatively correlated with cfPWV and is an independent predictor of aortic stiffness in elderly diabetic persons.

The adipocyte fatty-acid binding protein (A-FABP) is predominantly expressed in macrophages and adipocytes and is an essential mediator of inflammation and atherosclerosis pathogenesis. Atherosclerosis is an aggravating factor for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Our study intended to study the association between PAD and serum A-FABP levels in type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. One hundred and twenty T2DM subjects were enrolled in the study. Fasting blood samples were collected to determine biochemical data and A-FABP levels. By the automatic oscillometric method, the ankle−brachial index (ABI) was measured. Low ABI was defined as any value < 0.9. Twenty participants with T2DM (16.7%) were included in the low ABI group. Low ABI T2DM participants had an increased mean body mass index, body fat mass, systolic blood pressure, C-reactive protein, urine albumin−creatinine ratio, and A-FABP levels compared to those in the normal ABI group. After variables significantly associated with PAD were adjusted by multivariate logistic regression analyses, circulating A-FABP levels (odds ratio [OR]: 1.138; 95 percent confidence interval [CI]: 1.023−1.266; p = 0.017) were identified as the independent marker of PAD. In conclusion, fasting serum A-FABP value has positive association with PAD in T2DM patients.

The perilla anthocyanins have important medicinal and ornamental value, and their contents are significantly affected by light intensity. In view of their molecular mechanisms were not well understood, we integrated the metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses of the light-sensitive perilla variety under different light intensity. The perilla leave color were obviously affected under different treatments. Totally 140 flavonoid metabolites and 2461 genes showed steady change, among which 60 flavonoid metabolites were increased accumulation and 983 genes were upregulated expression under elevated light intensity treatment. Light treatment prominently affected the expression of genes involved in the main anthocyanin metabolites accumulation in perilla leaves. Using WGCNA analysis, we identified 4 key genes in anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway (CHI, DFR, and ANS) and 147 transcription factors (MYB, bHLH, bZIP, ERF, and NAC) involved in malonylshisonin biosynthesis. Among them, 6 MYBs and 4 bZIPs were predicted to play important roles in light regulation of malonylshisonin biosynthesis based on phylogenetic construction, correlation analysis, cis-acting element identification and qPCR verification. The identified key genes and regulatory factors will help us to understand the potential mechanism of photo-regulated anthocyanin accumulation in perilla.

Aortic stiffness (AS), assessed using carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), is associated with cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The relationship between serum fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21) and AS in T2DM patients was evaluated. Fasting serum FGF-21 levels of 130 T2DM patients were measured using an enzyme immunoassay kit. A validated tonometry system was used to measure cfPWV (>10 m/s indicated AS). Of these T2DM patients, 34.6% were defined as the AS group. T2DM patients with AS were older; exhibited higher systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and body fat mass; higher triglyceride, fasting glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, and creatinine levels; higher urine albumin-to-creatinine ratios and serum FGF-21 levels; and lower estimated glomerular filtration rates. The FGF-21 level (odds ratio = 1.005, 95% confidence interval: 1.002-1.009, p = 0.002) as well as systolic blood pressure was an independent predictor of AS and positively correlated to cfPWV values (ß = 0.369, p < 0.001) in T2DM patients. For T2DM patients, serum FGF-21 level could be a predictor for AS.
