In modern optics, there are two general models to describe the behavior of light in graphene: the zero-thickness model and the slab model. The difference in physical phenomena predicted by the two models is very small, which is hardly distinguished by traditional measurement methods. Therefore, which model can describe the light-matter interaction in graphene more exactly is still a challenging issue. In this work, based on the sensitive optical phenomenon called the photonic spin Hall effect, the small difference can be magnified to a detectable level by the weak-value amplification. The experimental results show that the zero-thickness model can more accurately describe the interaction between light and monolayer or bilayer graphene, while the case of more than two layers, which can no longer be regarded as two-dimensional thickness, should be described by the slab model. Our results may provide information on light interacting with graphene for future investigation in photonics and optoelectronics.

Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are obligate plant parasites that cause severe economic losses to agricultural crops worldwide. Because of serious health and environmental concerns related to the use of chemical nematicides, the development of efficient alternatives is of great importance. Biological control through exploiting the potential of rhizosphere microorganisms is currently accepted as an important approach for pest management in sustainable agriculture. In our research, during screening of rhizosphere bacteria against the root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne incognita, Ochrobactrum pseudogrignonense strain NC1 from the rhizosphere of healthy tomatoes showed strong nematode inhibition. A volatile nematicidal assay showed that the cell-free fermentation filtrate in the first-row wells of 12-well tissue culture plates caused M. incognita juvenile mortality in the second-row wells. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed that dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and benzaldehyde were the main volatile compounds produced by strain NC1. The nematicidal activity of these compounds indicated that the lethal concentration 50 against the M. incognita juveniles in the second-row wells and the fourth-row wells were 23.4 µmol/ml and 30.7 µmol/ml for DMDS and 4.7 µmol/ml and 15.2 µmol/ml for benzaldehyde, respectively. A greenhouse trial using O. pseudogrignonense strain NC1 provided management efficiencies of root-knot nematodes of 88 to 100% compared with the untreated control. This study demonstrated that nematode-induced root-gall suppression mediated by the bacterial volatiles DMDS and benzaldehyde presents a new opportunity for root-knot nematode management.

BACKGROUND: Stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) plays an important role in the osteoblastic differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMMSCs), but the specific mechanism remains unclear. Our study aimed to clarify the role of the lncRNA-H19/miR-214-5p/BMP2 axis in the osteoblastic differentiation of hBMMSCs induced by SDF-1. METHODS: We used reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, alkaline phosphatase activity test, and Alizarin red staining to evaluate the osteoblastic differentiation of primary hBMMSCs and the luciferase reporter assay to determine if lncRNA-H19 binds with miR-214-5p. RESULTS: Our results indicated that SDF-1 (50 ng/mL) promotes the osteoblastic differentiation of hBMMSCs, significantly upregulates osteoblastogenic genes (OCN, OSX, RUNX2, and ALP), and increases Alizarin red staining, alkaline phosphatase activity, and lncRNA-H19 expression. Luciferase reporter assay verified that lncRNA-H19 binds with and represses miR-214-5p, thereby upregulating BMP2 expression. Use of miR-214-5p inhibitor or overexpression of lncRNA-H19 can promote the osteoblastic differentiation of hBMMSCs, but miR-214-5p or shH19 inhibits the osteoblastic differentiation of hBMMSCs. Treatment with an miR-214-5p inhibitor could rescue the inhibitory effect of shH19 on the osteoblastic differentiation of hBMMSCs. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, SDF-1 promotes the osteoblastic differentiation of hBMMSCs through the lncRNA-H19/miR-214-5p/BMP2 axis. Increased osteoblastic differentiation by an miR-214-5p inhibitor reveals a new possible strategy for the treatment of bone defect and osteoporosis.

A N-enriched porous carbon/SiO2 (SiO2 /NC) composite from rice husks was prepared by ball milling and tested as a stable anode for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), in which the homogeneous dispersion of SiO2 nanoparticles and carbon matrix, and high level of N-doping can be realized simultaneously. The influence of N-doping on a series of SiO2 /NCs was systematically studied; this proved that the porosity, N-doping content, and electronic conductivity of SiO2 /NC can be controlled by adjusting common nitrogen sources (urea and melamine) and doping routes, including dry and wet milling, to reach a desirable balance of high capacity, long-term cyclability, and rate property. The optimized SiO2 /NC composite delivers a stably reversible capacity of 581 mA h g-1 at the high current load of 1.0 A g-1 at the 1000th cycle. The novel Li-storage mechanism of active silica in a composite was first proposed after observation of the N-doping effect that the redox reaction between SiO2 and Li+ is accelerated to transform into an alloying reaction of generated Si and Li+ , thus enhancing the reversible capacity. Moreover, kinetics analysis confirms that there is a combined Li-storage mechanism of battery-capacitive pattern in composite that contributes to fast charge transfer and ion diffusion during cycle.

According to the pharmacophore binding strategy and principle of bioelectronic isobaric, used the sulfonylurea bridge as the parent structure, a series of novel thiourea compounds containing aromatic-substituted pyrimidines were designed and synthesized. The preliminary herbicidal activity tests showed that some compounds had good herbicidal activity against Digitaria adscendens, Amaranthus retroflexus, especially for compound 4d and 4f. The results showed that compound 4d had an inhibition rate of 81.5% on the root growth of Brassica napus L. at the concentration of 100 mg L-1, and compound 4f had an inhibition rate of 81% on the root growth of Digitaria adscendens at the concentration of 100 mg L-1. Compounds 4d and 4f had higher comparative activity on Echinochloa crus-galli than the commercial herbicide bensulfuron-methyl. The preliminary structure-activity relationship (SAR) was also summarized. We also tested the in vivo AHAS enzyme activity inhibition experiment of 14 compounds at 100 mg L-1, and the results showed that they all have inhibitory activity on the enzyme, with the highest inhibition rate reaching 44.4% (compound 4d). Based on the results of molecular docking to yeast acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS), the possible herbicidal activity mechanism of these compounds was evaluated.

BACKGROUND: The relevance between abnormal microRNA expression and osteoarthritis (OA) has been elaborated in recent studies. Hence, the present study aimed to assess the impact of miR-142-5p on chondrocyte growth and apoptosis. METHODS: To mimic OA-like chondrocyte damage, interleukin (IL)-1ß was used for chondrocyte treatment. The expression of miR-142-5p, SGTB, long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) X inactive specific transcript (XIST) and involved molecules such as Col2A1, Bcl-2, MMP13 and Bax was determined via a quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and western blot analyses. Functional roles of miR-142-5p, SGTB and XIST were monitored in 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine, CCK-8 and TUNEL experiments. Rescue analyses were conducted to consolidate the effect of the XIST/miR-142-5p/SGTB axis on chondrocytes in OA. RESULTS: miR-142-5p was down-regulated in IL-1ß-treated chondrocytes, whereas SGTB and XIST levels were increased. Overexpression of miR-142-5p stimulated proliferation and retarded apoptosis in IL-1ß-treated chondrocytes. Meanwhile, miR-142-5p elevation was correlated with an elevation of Col2A1 and Bcl-2, as well as a decline of MMP13 and Bax. A mechanistic study showed that miR-142-5p negatively regulated SGTB expression. Moreover, we found that lncRNA XIST could relieve the inhibition of miR-142-5p on SGTB expression. Augmentation of SGTB or suppression of miR-142-5p reversed the influence of XIST depletion on chondrocyte growth and apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: The present study has explored the fundamental role of miR-142-5p in IL-1ß-treated chondrocytes, as well as the novel molecular mechanism constituted by miR-142-5p/SGTB/XIST in OA. Potentially, the results obtained may add new insight into OA pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Short sleep is an obesity risk factor, however, little is known about its interplay with genetic predisposition and pathways involved in obesity pathogenesis, especially in the longitudinal setting. We aimed to investigate a possible sleep-gene interaction for childhood obesity risk, and whether the interaction in childhood longitudinally contributes to obesity risk at a 10-year follow-up and further to test if there is any mediation through the leptin pathway. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 3211 children from China (6-18 years) at baseline and 848 participants at 10-year follow-up from the Beijing Child and Adolescent Metabolic Syndrome (BCAMS) cohort study were analyzed. Baseline leptin concentrations and 12 established adult body mass index (BMI) loci were examined for the associations with habitual sleep duration. RESULTS: After adjusting for covariates, including pubertal stages and behavioral factors, short sleep duration at baseline was significantly associated with increased overweight/obesity risk at both baseline and follow-up. Genetic predisposition scores (GPS), particularly consisting of leptin-related SNPs (GPSleptin), were robustly associated with baseline overweight/obesity in children who slept ≤8 h/day (P < 0.001), whereas the association was ablated in those who slept ≥10 h/day (P > 0.05). Comparable observations were made at follow-up. Mediation analysis revealed a modest direct effect of the GPSleptin-sleep interaction on BMI at baseline, while a significant indirect effect of this interaction was found to be mediated principally through elevated leptin (proportion: 52.6%); moreover, the mediation effect via leptin remained stable over 10 years. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that shorter sleep duration in children from China (< 8h/day), compared to longer sleep duration (≥10 h/day), has a long-term impact on the association of polygenic risk for obesity from childhood to young adulthood and leptin pathway explains a key mechanism via a modification effect. Therefore, adequate sleep duration during childhood is important for the early prevention of obesity, especially if there is a genetic predisposition to this trait.

In this study, we use an anaerobic-aerobic integrated denitrification (Fe/C-ZACID) device with an iron-carbon-activated carbon and zeolite composite filter to remove nitrogen from simulated low carbon-nitrogen ratio (C/N) sewage. The impacts of dissolved oxygen (DO) level, hydraulic retention time (HRT), C/N and nitrate recirculation ratio on denitrification performance were studied. The results show that when HRT was 6 h, DO was 3 ± 0.1 mg/L, influent C/N was 3, and nitrate recirculation ratio was 100%, and removal rates of 95% for ammonia and 85% for total nitrogen (TN) were achieved. A beaker comparison test demonstrated that this synergistic denitrification system included heterotrophic denitrification, physicochemical denitrification, iron autotrophic denitrification and hydrogen autotrophic denitrification, etc. The Fe/C-ZACID device has a high-efficiency nitrogen removal effect for low C/N ratio sewage and strong shock resistance, which provides technical support and a theoretical basis for advanced denitrification of rural domestic sewage.

In recent years, ternary transition metal oxides (TTMOs), especially spinel type TTMOs have attracted widespread attention as promising candidates for electrode materials. Among all of the popular TTMOs, MgCo2 O4 is an outstanding one, owing to its superior theoretical capacitance. In this work, MgCo2 O4 nanosheet arrays (NSAs) grown directly on nickel foams were fabricated through a facile hydrothermal process at 120 °C for 4 h. With a series of structural and morphological characterization techniques, it was found that the ethanol played a key role in controlling the composition and morphology during the synthesis process. The MgCo2 O4 NSAs exhibited a superior specific capacitance of 853.06 C g-1 (at 1 mA cm-2 ) and enhanced cycling performance, with 94.65 % of initial capacitance retained after 3000 cycles when used as a binder-free integrated electrode for electrochemical supercapacitors; much higher than other reported data for MgCo2 O4 as well. The excellent electrochemical properties mainly came from the unique morphology of the MgCo2 O4 NSAs. This study will demonstrate the applications of MgCo2 O4 NSAs based large-scale supercapacitors grown on low-cost nickel foams.

Objective: To screen novel biomarkers in the levels of protein complexes for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: Serum immunoinflammation-related protein complexes (IIRPCs) and diabetes-related protein complexes (DRPCs) in 1537 serum samples including 504 healthy controls, 320 patients with prediabetes, and 713 patients with T2DM were analyzed using an optimized native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (native-PAGE). Results: Seven patterns of serum IIRPCs and four patterns of serum DRPCs were observed in the study population, respectively. Significant increase in the levels of serum IIRPCs in T2DM was detected relative to healthy controls. Change trends of serum DRPCs are as below: patients with T2DM>patients with prediabetes> healthy controls. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that increased levels of serum IIRPCs and DRPCs were associated with T2DM.

Epidemiological data show that osteoarthritis (OA) is significantly associated with lower birth weight, and that OA may be a type of fetal-originated adult disease. The present study aimed to investigate the prenatal food-restriction (PFR) effect on the quality of articular cartilage in female offspring to explore the underlying mechanisms of fetal-originated OA. Maternal rats were fed a restricted diet from gestational day (GD) 11 to 20 to induce intra-uterine growth retardation. Female fetuses and female adult offspring fed a post-weaning high-fat diet were killed at GD20 and postnatal week 24, respectively. Serum and knee cartilage samples from fetuses and adult female offspring were collected and examined for cholesterol metabolism and histology. Fetal serum corticosterone and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in the PFR group were lower than those of the control, but the serum cholesterol level was not changed. The lower expression of IGF-1 in the PFR group lasted into adulthood. The expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) genes, including type II collagen, aggrecan and cholesterol efflux genes including liver X receptor, were significantly induced, but the ATP-binding-cassette transporter A1 was unchanged. PFR could induce a reduction in ECM synthesis and impaired cholesterol efflux in female offspring, and eventually led to poor quality of articular cartilage and OA.

Little is known about the genetic factors that contribute to familial colorectal cancer type X (FCCX), characterized by hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma with no mismatch repair defects. Genetic linkage analysis, exome sequencing, tumor studies, and functional investigations of 4 generations of a FCCX family led to the identification of a truncating germline mutation in RPS20, which encodes a component (S20) of the small ribosomal subunit and is a new colon cancer predisposition gene. The mutation was associated with a defect in pre-ribosomal RNA maturation. Our findings show that mutations in a gene encoding a ribosomal protein can predispose individuals to microsatellite-stable colon cancer. Evaluation of additional FCCX families for mutations in RPS20 and other ribosome-associated genes is warranted.

Quinolones have been reported to induce adverse effects on articular cartilage, tendons and ligaments. However, the effects of quinolones on menisci have not been revealed. The present study was to test the effects of levofloxacin on meniscus cells in vitro. Rabbit meniscus cells were administrated with different concentrations of levofloxacin (0, 14, 28, 56, 112 and 224 µm) for 24 or 48 h, and cell viability and apoptosis were measured. The mRNA expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, MMP-3, MMP-13, tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1, TIMP-3, Col1a1, Bcl-2, caspase-3 and inducible nitric oxide were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Active caspase-3 was detected by immunocytochemical assay, while protein expression levels of MMP-3 and MMP-13 were measured by Western blotting assay. After treatment with levofloxacin for 48 h, cell viability was decreased from dose of 28 to 224 µm in a concentration-dependent manner. An increase of apoptotic cells was observed by flow cytometry. Active caspase-3 protein expression level was also increased. The mRNA level of Bcl-2 was decreased and levels of MMP-1, MMP-3 and MMP-13 in experimental groups were higher than those of controls. The protein levels of MMP-3 and MMP-13 were increased. Moreover, the mRNA levels of TIMP-3 and col1a1 were decreased. A dose-dependent increase of inducible nitric oxide mRNA expression level was also observed. Our results suggested the cytotoxic effects of levofloxacin on meniscus cells through induction of apoptosis and unbalanced MMPs/TIMPs expression. These side effects might result in meniscus extracellular matrix degradation and meniscal lesion. Thus, quinolones should be used cautiously on patients who perform athletic activities or undergo surgical meniscus repair.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate endophytic bacterial diversity of wild soybean varieties with different resistance to soybean cyst nematode(Heterodera glycines) , for deciphering the interactions of soybean cyst nematode with endophytic bacteria. METHODS: After screening wild soybean varieties against race 3 of H. glycines, we investigated endophytic bacterial diversity in root tissues of wild soybean varieties with different resistance to H. glycines using 16S rDNA cloning library and amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis. RESULTS: Endophytic bacteria of wild soybean root belonged to 6 bacterial groups, the clones belonging to group Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were the endophyte dominants in wild soybean with 46.8% and 13.6% of total clones, respectively. Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, Deincoccus-Thermus and Archaea were less represented. 18.8% of clone sequences were similar to those of uncultured bacteria in the environment. The bacterial diversity was higher in H. glycines-Resistant than -Susceptible wild soybean varieties, and the dominant group was different between H. glycines-Resistant and -Susceptible wild soybean varieties. Mesorhizobium tamadayense, Enterobacter ludwigii and Bacillus megaterium were the main bacterial groups in special operational taxonomic units (OTUs) of H. glycines-Resistant wild soybean variety. CONCLUSIONS: By 16S rDNA cloning library and amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis, the diversity of dominant group of endophytic bacteria in root tissues has difference among H. glycines-Resistant and -Susceptible wild soybean varieties.

BACKGROUND: The predictors of long-term survival and appropriate surrogate endpoints in unresectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with radiotherapy remain unclear, especially in the immune therapy era. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed a prospective cohort of 822 patients treated at the Chinese National Cancer Center from 2013 to 2022. Cure fractions, surrogates for long-term survival, and associated factors were assessed using a mixture cure model, with validation against a matched Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) dataset. RESULTS: 27.3% of patients with unresectable stage III NSCLC can achieve long-term survival after treated by radiotherapy. 4-year PFS and 5-year OS, when 80% of patients were considered cured, showed significant correlations with cure rates based on background mortality-adjusted PFS and relative survival, with R-squared values exceeding 0.85. Independent predictors of long-term survival included non-squamous cell carcinoma (non-SCC) pathological type, N category, gross tumor volume, and treatment combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). CONCLUSIONS: Radiotherapy, especially when combined with ICIs, offers a potential cure for a proportion of patients with unresectable stage III NSCLC. Tumor burden and ICIs are key predictors of long-term survival. The study suggested 4-year PFS and 5-year OS as surrogate endpoints for cure and long-term survival assessment.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising active electrode materials in supercapacitors for its controllable porous structure and excellent physio-chemical properties. However, the poor conductivities keep it from achieving its full capacitance potential, which greatly limits its practical application. Here, a facile pathway is reported to fabricate the GO/Ni2ZnS4@NiCo2S4 composite with large specific surface area and favorable electrical conductivity. Thanks to the novel tremella-like core-shell structure and high-efficient synergistic effects among multi-components, the designed GO/Ni2ZnS4@NiCo2S4 electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 2284 F/g at 1 A/g. Furthermore, the asymmetric supercapacitor fabricated by coupling GO/Ni2ZnS4@NiCo2S4 positive electrode with biological carbon negative electrode achieves a remarkable energy density of 120 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 750 W kg-1.

The role of Galectin-9 (Gal-9) in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of action and therapeutic potential of Gal-9 in RA. We detected Gal-9 expression in clinical samples, explored the mechanism of function of Gal-9 by knockdown and overexpression in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs), and further verified it in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model. We found that the levels of Gal-9 were considerably elevated in RA synovium than in osteoarthritis (OA) patients. A substantial decrease of Gal-9 was demonstrated after tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) inhibitor treatment in the plasma of patients with RA. Additionally, transcriptome sequencing revealed that Gal-9 was involved in the regulation of the TNF-α pathway. Gal-9 was considerably upregulated after TNF-α stimulation in FLSs, and knockdown of Gal-9 substantially inhibited TNF-α activated proliferation, migration and inflammatory response. According to cell transcriptome sequencing results, we further confirmed that Gal-9 could achieve these effects by interacting with MAFB and affecting PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. Finally, we knocked down Gal-9 on the CIA model and found that it could alleviate the progression of arthritis. In conclusion, our study revealed that the knockdown of Gal-9 could inhibited TNF-α induced activation in RA through MAFB, PI3K/AKT/mTOR.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of age on long-term mortality and net survival benefit of radiotherapy (RT) for early-stage grade I-II FL. Five thousand three hundred and five patients with early-stage grade I-II FL in the SEER database (2000-2015) were identified. Primary therapy included RT alone (RT, 20.7%), chemotherapy alone (CT, 27.6%), combined modality therapy (CMT, 5.9%), and observation (45.8%). Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was conducted to balance the treatment arms. Relative survival (RS), the standardized mortality ratio (SMR), and transformed Cox regression were used to compare survival differences between treatments. RT with or without CT had significantly higher 10-year OS (approximately 78%) and RS (>95%), but lower SMR (1.47-1.76), compared with CT (67.8%; 86.3%; 2.35; ps < .001), observation (70.2%; 91.2%; 1.82; ps < .05). RT was an independent predictor of better OS and RS in multivariate analyses (p < .001). No significant interaction between age and RT was identified for RS (Pinteraction = .509) or OS (Pinteraction = .769), indicating similar survival benefits across all-ages patients. RT was associated with long-term OS and net survival benefits in patients with early-stage grade I-II FL, irrespective of age.HighlightsThe pattern and incidence of mortality varied by age-group as elderly patients often die of other diseases other than FL beyond 5 years.Radiotherapy was associated with higher long-term OS/RS and better SMR compared with other approaches, regardless of age.

The disease failure patterns and optimal treatment of bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) lymphoma are unknown. This retrospective study involved 71 patients with primary BALT lymphoma who had received radiotherapy (RT), surgery, immunochemotherapy (IC), or observation. The median follow-up time was 66 months. The 5-year overall survival and lymphoma-specific survival were 91.2% and 96.1%, respectively, and were not significantly different among treatments. The 5-year cumulative incidence of overall failure for RT, surgery, IC, and observation was 0%, 9.7% (p = .160), 30.8% (p = .017), and 31.3% (p = .039). There was no grade ≥3 toxicity in RT group according to the CTCAE 5.0 reporting system. Quality of life (QoL) was at similarly good levels among the treatment groups. BALT lymphoma had a favorable prognosis but persistent risk of relapse after IC or observation. Given the very low disease failure risk and good QoL, RT remains an effective initial treatment for BALT lymphoma.


BALT lymphoma has a favorable prognosis but a persistent progression and relapse risk.Radiotherapy is associated with lower failure of disease progression and relapse, low toxicity and good quality of life.

Cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression have long been considered the two most important emotion regulation strategies. Increasingly, studies have found that mindfulness has a relationship with them. However, the magnitude and direction of the relationship between them have yet to reach a consistent conclusion. To this end, a three-level meta-analysis was used to explore the relationship between mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, and expressive suppression. Thirty-six studies were included in the meta-analysis through a literature search, including 36 samples with 83 effect sizes and a total of 12,026 subjects. The three-level random effects model showed that mindfulness was positively correlated with cognitive reappraisal to a low to moderate degree but was not correlated with expressive suppression. The moderating effect analysis showed that the relationship between mindfulness and cognitive reappraisal was slightly closer in males than in females. The study found a relatively stable positive relationship between mindfulness and cognitive reappraisal, an adaptive emotion regulation mode, while the relationship with expressive suppression was insignificant. The finding supported the affect regulation training model and also shed light on potential areas for future studies.
