RESUMO

Acetylshikonin (AS) is an active component of Lithospermum erythrorhizon Sieb. et Zucc that exhibits activity against various cancers; however, the underlying mechanisms of AS against oesophageal squamous carcinoma (ESCC) need to be elusive. The research explores the anti-cancer role and potential mechanism of AS on ESCC in vitro and in vivo, providing evidences for AS treatment against ESCC. In this study, we firstly demonstrated that AS treatment effectively inhibits cell viability and proliferation of ESCC cells. In addition, AS significantly induces G1/S phage arrest and promotes apoptosis in ESCC cell lines. Further studies reveal that AS induces ER stress, as observed by dose- and time-dependently increased expression of BIP, PDI, PERK, phosphorylation of eIF2α , CHOP and splicing of XBP1. CHOP knockdown or PERK inhibition markedly rescue cell apoptosis induced by AS. Moreover, AS treatment significantly inhibits ESCC xenograft growth in nude mice. Elevated expression of BIP and CHOP is also observed in xenograft tumours. Taken together, AS inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis through ER stress-activated PERK/eIF2α /CHOP pathway in ESCC, which indicates AS represents a promising candidate for ESCC treatment.

RESUMO

Chronic liver diseases caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) are the accepted main cause leading to liver cirrhosis, hepatic fibrosis, and hepatic carcinoma. Sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP), a specific membrane receptor of hepatocytes for triggering HBV infection, is a promising target against HBV entry. In this study, pentacyclic triterpenoids (PTs) including glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), oleanolic acid (OA), ursolic acid (UA) and betulinic acid (BA) were modified via molecular hybridization with podophyllotoxin respectively, and resulted in thirty-two novel conjugates. The anti-HBV activities of conjugates were evaluated in HepG2.2.15 cells. The results showed that 66% of the conjugates exhibited lower toxicity to the host cells and had significant inhibitory effects on the two HBV antigens, especially HBsAg. Notably, the compounds BA-PPT1, BA-PPT3, BA-PPT4, and UA-PPT3 not only inhibited the secretion of HBsAg but also suppressed HBV DNA replication. A significant difference in the binding of active conjugates to NTCP compared to the HBV PreS1 antigen was observed by SPR assays. The mechanism of action was found to be the competitive binding of these compounds to the NTCP 157-165 epitopes, blocking HBV entry into host cells. Molecular docking results indicated that BA-PPT3 interacted with the amino acid residues of the target protein mainly through π-cation, hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction, suggesting its potential as a promising HBV entry inhibitor targeting the NTCP receptor.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The anatomical characteristics of difficult airways can be analysed geometrically. This study aims to develop and validate a geometry-assisted difficult airway screening method (GADAS method) for difficult tracheal intubation. METHODS: In the GADAS method, a geometric simulated model was established based on computer graphics. According to the law of deformation of the upper airway on laryngoscopy, the expected visibility of the glottis was calculated to simulate the real visibility on laryngoscopy. Validation of the new method: Approved by the Ethics Committee of Yijishan Hospital of Wannan Medical College. Adult patients who needed tracheal intubation under general anaesthesia for elective surgery were enrolled. The data of patients were input into the computer software to calculate the expected visibility of the glottis. The results of tracheal intubation were recorded by anaesthesiologists. The primary observation outcome was the screening performance of the expected visibility of the glottis for difficult tracheal intubation. RESULTS: The geometric model and software of the GADAS method were successfully developed and are available for use. We successfully observed 2068 patients, of whom 56 patients had difficult intubation. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of low expected glottis visibility for predicting difficult laryngoscopy was 0.96 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.95-0.96). The sensitivity and specificity were 89.3% (95% CI: 78.1-96.0%) and 94.3% (95% CI: 93.2%-95.3), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible to screen difficult-airway patients by applying computer techniques to simulate geometric changes in the upper airway.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Based on the upper airway anatomy and joint function parameters examined by ultrasound, a multiparameter ultrasound model for difficult airway assessment (ultrasound model) was established, and we evaluated its ability to predict difficult airways. METHODS: A prospective case-cohort study of difficult airway prediction in adult patients undergoing elective surgery with endotracheal intubation under general anesthesia, and ultrasound phantom examination for difficult airway assessment before anesthesia, including hyomental distance, tongue thickness, mandibular condylar mobility, mouth opening, thyromental distance, and modified Mallampati tests, was performed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the ultrasound model and conventional airway assessment methods in predicting difficult airways. RESULTS: We successfully enrolled 1000 patients, including 51 with difficult laryngoscopy (DL) and 26 with difficult tracheal intubation (DTI). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) for the ultrasound model to predict DL was 0.84 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.82-0.87), and the sensitivity and specificity were 0.75 (95% CI: 0.60-0.86) and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.79-0.84), respectively. The AUC for predicting DTI was 0.89 (95% CI: 0.87-0.91), and the sensitivity and specificity were 0.85 (95% CI: 0.65-0.96) and 0.81 (95% CI: 0.78-0.83), respectively. Compared with mouth opening, thyromental distance, and modified Mallampati tests, the ultrasound model predicted a greater AUC for DL (P < 0.05). Compared with mouth opening and modified Mallampati tests, the ultrasound model predicted a greater AUC for DTI (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The ultrasound model has good predictive performance for difficult airways. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Accurate prediction of the difficult airway (DA) could help to prevent catastrophic consequences in emergency resuscitation, intensive care, and general anesthesia. Until now, there is no nomogram prediction model for DA based on ultrasound assessment. In this study, we aimed to develop a predictive model for difficult tracheal intubation (DTI) and difficult laryngoscopy (DL) using nomogram based on ultrasound measurement. We hypothesized that nomogram could utilize multivariate data to predict DTI and DL. METHODS: A prospective observational DA study was designed. This study included 2254 patients underwent tracheal intubation. Common and airway ultrasound indicators were used for the prediction, including thyromental distance (TMD), modified Mallampati test (MMT) score, upper lip bite test (ULBT) score temporomandibular joint (TMJ) mobility and tongue thickness (TT). Univariate and the Akaike information criterion (AIC) stepwise logistic regression were used to identify independent predictors of DTI and DL. Nomograms were constructed to predict DL and DTL based on the AIC stepwise analysis results. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the accuracy of the nomograms. RESULTS: Among the 2254 patients enrolled in this study, 142 (6.30%) patients had DL and 51 (2.26%) patients had DTI. After AIC stepwise analysis, ULBT, MMT, sex, TMJ, age, BMI, TMD, IID, and TT were integrated for DL nomogram; ULBT, TMJ, age, IID, TT were integrated for DTI nomogram. The areas under the ROC curves were 0.933 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.912-0.954] and 0.974 (95% CI, 0.954-0.995) for DL and DTI, respectively. CONCLUSION: Nomograms based on airway ultrasonography could be a reliable tool in predicting DA. RESUMO

The pollution of corn straw to the environment had attracted much attention. The preparation and alkali modification of corn straw biochar as the constructed wetland (CW) substrate was conducive to solving the environment pollution caused by straw and improving the purification effect of CW. The NaOH modification mechanism of corn straw biochar was analyzed by measuring the surface morphology, element content, specific surface area (SSA), pore volume, crystal structure, surface functional groups and CO2 adsorption. Biochar prepared under relatively optimal NaOH-modified conditions was used as the vertical flow CW substrate to treat city tail water. The results showed that controlling the modification condition of NaOH (< 1.0 mol·L-1, ≤ 24 h) was conducive to prevent the biochar structure destruction and C element reduction. The SSA and pore volume of NaOH (0.1 mol·L-1) modified biochar are 360 m2·g-1 and 0.109 cm3·g-1, respectively. The biochar adsorption for CO2 conformed to the Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal adsorption theoretical model (R2 > 0.9). The maximum adsorption capacity of CO2 by modified biochar with NaOH (0.1 mol·L-1) was 64.516 cm3·g-1 and increased by 10.3%. The city tail water treated by CW with plants showed that the removal rates of ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen reached about 90%. The research results improved the utilization value of straw, realized straw carbon sequestration and promoted the progress of CW technology.

RESUMO

Corn straw is rich in resources, and the preparation of biochar as the constructed wetland (CW) substrate is an effective measure to realize high-value resource utilization. The objective of this paper was to improve the treatment effect of CW on city tail water, the freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) modification and chemical modification (KMnO4, NaOH and H2SO4) of straw biochar and the utilization of modified straw biochar in CW were studied. The modification characteristics of straw biochar were discussed through scanning electron microscope, element determination, pore structure determination, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared reflection analysis, CO2 adsorption and desorption experiment and application experiment of CW (no plants and plants). The results show that under the influence of strong oxidation of KMnO4, the combination of KMnO4 and FTCs modification is easy to cause the destruction of biochar structure, and the content of carbon element is reduced. Except for the combined modification of NaOH and FTCs, other composite modifications have little effect on the crystal structure and functional groups of straw biochar. The adsorption capacity of CO2 by FTCs modified biochar increased by 20.4%, and the adsorption capacity of CO2 by H2SO4 and FTCs composite modified biochar increased by 23.0%. The effect of H2SO4 modification of straw biochar based on FTCs modification is obviously better than that of NaOH and KMnO4. The research results are of great significance to improve the material structure of biochar and the purification effect of CW on city tail water.

RESUMO

Municipal sludge is a solid waste material, and resource utilization is the optimal way to dispose of this material. The amount of municipal sludge produced in China is large, and it can be used in the preparation of ceramsite. The content of Al2O3 in drinking water treatment sludge is significantly higher than that in wastewater treatment sludge, while the content of K2O, Na2O and MgO in the two kinds of sludge is similar. When sludge is used to prepare ceramsite, the amount of sludge in most raw materials for ceramsite is less than 50%. The bulk density of the prepared sludge ceramsite is less than 1000 kg m-3, and the highest water absorption rate is close to 40%. The leaching content of heavy metals in municipal sludge-based ceramsite is within the standard health safety limit, and heavy metals are better stabilized. The fitting effect of the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation of the dynamic adsorption of sludge ceramsite is obviously better than that of the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation. Sludge ceramsite used in bio-filter media and constructed wetland (CW) substrates is good able to purify wastewater. In the future, the preparation method of municipal sludge ceramsite and purification research of CW substrates based on sludge ceramsite need to be further improved.

RESUMO

Constructed wetland (CW) has obvious advantages in wastewater treatment of medium and small towns. However, there is a lack of health monitoring research on CW system clogging. The electrical conductivity (EC) of wastewater purified by CW is related to the concentration of pollutants, which can reflect the CW clogging. The objectives of this study are to reveal the mechanisms of CWs substrate clogging from the perspective of wastewater EC changes, and provide an important reference for the health evaluation of CWs. The EC changes of nine CWs substrates (quartz sand, zeolite, gravel, coarse sand, straw biochar, sludge biochar, clay ceramsite, fly ash ceramsite and shale ceramsite) under different conditions (purified water, wastewater and wastewater + NaCl) were tested, and comparative analysis was used to reveal the influence of different substrate materials on the change of wastewater EC. The results show that the adsorption ability of substrate material isn't the main factor affecting the EC of wastewater, and the soluble component in the material is the important factor to cause the difference of EC increment. Under the condition of 0.4-1.0 g L-1 NaCl concentration, the adsorption of substrate materials had little effect on the EC of wastewater, and the effect of NaCl used in CW tracer experiment was good. Quartz sand, coarse sand, gravel and sludge biochar have little influence on the change of wastewater EC. Other materials that have great influence on the change of wastewater EC can be treated by modifying or controlling the mixing ratio. The results are of great significance to reveal the clogging state of CW system and to carry out health assessment research.

RESUMO

Oesophageal cancer is one of the most frequent solid malignancies and the leading cause of cancer-related death around the world. It is urgent to develop novel therapy strategies to improve patient outcomes. Acetylation modification of histones has been extensively studied in epigenetics. BRD4, a reader of acetylated histone and non-histone proteins, has involved in tumorigenesis. It has emerged as a promising target for cancer therapy. BRD4 inhibitors, such as JQ1, have exerted efficacious anti-proliferation activities in diverse cancers. However, the effects of JQ1 on oesophageal cancer are still not fully described. Here, we demonstrate that JQ1 suppresses cell growth and triggers cellular senescence in KYSE450 cells. Mechanistically, JQ1 up-regulates p21 level and decreases cyclin D1 resulting in G1 cycle arrest. The inhibitory effects of JQ1 on KYSE450 cells are independent on apoptosis. It activates cellular senescence by increasing SA-ß-gal activity. BRD4 knockdown by shRNA recapitulates cellular senescence. We also display that administration of JQ1 decreases recruitment of BRD4 on the promoter of aurora kinases A and B. Inhibitors targeting at AURKA/B phenocopy JQ1 treatment in KYSE450 cells. These results identify a novel action manner of BRD4 in oesophageal cancer, which strengthens JQ1 as a candidate drug in oesophageal cancer chemotherapy.

RESUMO

This case study was performed to determine whether the pollutants in water of urban park could bring health risk to human engaging in water-related activities such as swimming and provide evidence demonstrating the critical need for strengthened recreational water resources management of urban park. TN, NH4+-N, TP, Cu, Mn, Zn, Se, Pb, As, Cd and Cr(VI) contents were determined to describe the spatial distribution of contaminations; sources apportionment with the method of correlation analysis, factor analysis and cluster analysis were followed by health risk assessment for swimmers of different age groups. The results reveal that element contents in all sites do not exceed Chinese standard for swimming area and European Commission standard for surface water; all detected elements except Cr(VI) have a tendency to accumulate in the location of lake crossing bridge; Mn and Zn are considered to have the same pollution source including geogenic and anthropogenic sources by multivariable analysis. Carcinogenic risks of different age groups descend in the same order with non-carcinogenic risks. Among all elements, Zn and Mn contribute the lowest non-carcinogenic risk (5.1940E-06) and the highest non-carcinogenic risk (7.9921E-04) through skin contact pathway, respectively. The total average personal risk for swimmers in swimming area is 1.9693E-03, and this site is not suitable for swimming. Overall, it is possible that swimmers are exposed to risk via the dermal route when carrying out water-related activities, it is recommended that necessary precautions and management should be taken in other similar locations around the world.

RESUMO

In this study, the microwave digestion method was used to determine total cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) concentrations, the BCR method was used to determine different states of Cd and Pb, and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) were used to determine Cd and Pb concentrations in simulated soil and barnyard grass before and after planting barnyard grass to provide a theoretical basis for the remediation of Cd- and Pb-contaminated soil. The results showed that the bioconcentration factor changes with different Cd concentrations are relatively complex and that the removal rate increases regularly. The 100 mg kg-1 Cd treatment had the highest removal rate, which reached 36.66%. For Pb, the bioconcentration factor decreased and tended to reach equilibrium as the Pb concentration increased. The highest removal rate was 41.72% and occurred in the 500 mg kg-1 Pb treatment; however, this removal rate was generally lower than that of Cd. In addition, the reduction state had the highest change rate, followed by the residual, acid soluble and oxidation states. For Pb, the residual state has the highest change rate, followed by the acid soluble state, reduction state and oxidation state. In addition, a significant correlation was observed between the soil Pb and Cd concentrations and the concentrations of Pb and Cd that accumulated in the belowground biomass of the barnyard grass, but no significant correlation was observed between the soil Pb and Cd concentrations and the amounts of Pb and Cd that accumulated in the aboveground biomass of the barnyard grass. The highest transfer factor of Cd was 0.49, which occurred in the 5 mg kg-1 Cd treatment. The higher transfer factor of Pb was 0.48 in the 100 mg kg-1 Pb treatment. All of these factors indicate that the belowground biomass of barnyard grass plays a more important role in the remediation of Cd- and Pb-contaminated soils than the aboveground biomass of barnyard grass. Remediation should occur through phytostabilization. Thus, with its strong adaptability and lush growth, barnyard grass can be applied as a pioneer species for the phytoremediation of Cd- and Pb-contaminated soils.

RESUMO

More attention is being devoted to heavy metal pollution because heavy metals can concentrate in higher animals through the food chain, harm human health and threaten the stability of the ecological environment. In this study, the effects of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni and Hg) emanating from oil waste disposal on surrounding soil in Jilin Province, China, were investigated. A potential ecological risk index was used to evaluate the damage of heavy metals and concluded that the degree of potential ecological damage of heavy metals can be ranked as follows: Hg > Cd > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Zn. The average value of the potential ecological harm index (Ri) is 71.93, thereby indicating light pollution. In addition, this study researched the spatial distribution of soil heavy metals by means of ArcGIS (geographic information system) spatial analysis software. The results showed that the potential ecological risk index (R) of the large value was close to the distance from the oil waste disposal area; it is relatively between the degree of heavy metals in soil and the distance from the waste disposal area.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to lead and cadmium in developing countries is considered to be a public health emergency. The present study was designed to investigate children's exposure to lead and cadmium in Changchun, China. METHODS: A total of 1619 blood samples were collected at random from 1426 children between one and 14 years of age, and 204 adults from Changchun, China. Blood lead and cadmium levels were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. RESULTS: The average blood lead level in children was 60.29 µg/L, with boys exhibiting higher blood lead levels than girls. The average blood cadmium level in children was 1.26 µg/L, and differences were not observed between boys and girls. CONCLUSIONS: Children from Changchun exhibited relatively low blood lead and cadmium levels compared with children from other cities, and higher lead and lower cadmium levels than adults. This may be related to leaded gasoline environmental pollution and children's hand-to-mouth activities.

Evaluation of the efficiency of aircraft liquid waste treatment has previously been conducted to prevent pollution of the environment. The current study aimed to provide a set of practical methods for efficient airport sanitary supervision. Aircraft liquid waste was collected at Longjia International Airport, Changchun from multiple flights. The efficiency of liquid waste treatment as well as the water quality of the wastewater processed via a second-stage wastewater facility were examined by measuring a number of physical, chemical, and biological indices. Our results indicated that treatment solely via resolvable sanitizing liquid was not sufficient. Although the contents of first-class pollutants all met the requirements of the standard criteria, the contents of a number of second-class pollutants did not satisfy these criteria. However, after further treatment via a second-stage wastewater facility installed at the airport, all indices reached second-grade requirements of the discharge standard. We suggest that daily inspection and quarantine indices at airports should include the suspension content, biological oxygen demands after 5 days, chemical oxygen demand total organic carbon content, amino nitrogen content, total phosphorous content, and the level of fecal coliforms.

RESUMO

Constructed wetland (CW) is an important method of ecological water treatment, and CW has obvious advantage in treating low-pollution water. In order to improve the treatment efficiency of CW, the first-order and second-order kinetics simulations of pollutant removal in CW were carried out to optimize operating conditions. The experimental study of city tail water treatment under unmodified biochar (different additions) or different modified biochar conditions showed that the first-order kinetic equation relatively accurately reflect the removal of pollutants by substrate. The relatively optimal range of biochar addition (2.21-3.79%) in the first-order kinetic analysis covered the relatively optimal mass ratio (2.95%). The first-order kinetic equation fitting showed that the half-life of ammonia nitrogen removal by NaOH (0.1 mol·L-1)-modified biochar was reduced by about 10% without plant. The half-life of total phosphorus removal by KMnO4 (0.1 mol·L-1) modified biochar was reduced by about 50%. The half-life of chemical oxygen demand removal by H2SO4 (0.75 mol·L-1) + 8 freeze-thaw cycles modified biochar was reduced by about 9.0%. When the half-life was small, the pollutant removal rate was high. The results of this study further confirmed the effectiveness of the simulation results of pollutant removal in CW with biochar by the first-order kinetic equation. This study further optimized the CW operating conditions and improved the treatment efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus in the CW.

RESUMO

Biochar prepared from straw as constructed wetland (CW) substrate reduces straw pollution and simultaneously promotes the wastewater treatment efficiency of CW. In order to further analyze the pollutant removal mechanism of KMnO4-modified biochar substrate, the KMnO4-modified biochar was characterized. The experiment on city tail water treatment by CW with biochar was analyzed. The research showed that the surface property improvement on KMnO4 (0.1 mol/L)-modified biochar was the most obvious. The biochar modified by 0.1 mol/L KMnO4 increased the SSA and the number of oxygen functional groups and alcohol hydroxyl. KMnO4-modified biochar improved the removal efficiency of NO3--N in CW. KMnO4-modified biochar substrate with plants improved the TP removal efficiency (about 45%). KMnO4 as modifier reduced the influence of biochar on electrical conductivity tracing experiment. This study will improve the utilization value of straw and the removal efficiency of CW.

RESUMO

The upper lip bite test (ULBT) is considered an effective method for predicting difficult airways, but data on the ULBT for predicting difficult tracheal intubation are lacking. This study aimed to examine the clinical utility of the ULBT in predicting difficult endotracheal intubation. We conducted an observational case-cohort study of adult patients undergoing elective surgery and requiring endotracheal intubation for general anesthesia. Difficult airway assessment was performed on the recruited patients before the operation, including the ULBT, mouth opening, thyromental distance, modified Mallampati test, and body mass index. The primary outcome was the incidence of difficult tracheal intubation. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to compare the performance of variables in predicting difficult tracheal intubation. We successfully recruited 2522 patients for analysis and observed 64 patients with difficult tracheal intubation. When predicting difficult tracheal intubation, grade 2 ULBT had a sensitivity of 0.75 and a specificity of 0.54, and grade 3 had a sensitivity of 0.28 and a specificity of 0.75. Compared with mouth opening, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the ULBT was lower in predicting difficult tracheal intubation (0.69 [95% confidence interval: 0.67-0.71] vs. 0.84 [95% confidence interval: 0.82-0.87], P < 0.05).Clinical Trials Registry: ChiCTR-ROC-16009050, principal investigator: Weidong Yao.

RESUMO

The combined effects and respective advantages of using pyrite and alkali-modified rice husk (RH) were studied as substrates for nitrogen and phosphorus removal from constructed wetlands, and the effects of the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio and the tidal flow mode on system performance were explored. The results showed that alkali-modified RH, which enhances heterotrophic denitrification, had far more advantages than pyrite, which enhances autotrophic denitrification, and alkali-modified RH can be used for the treatment of sewage containing low C/N ratios. At a C/N ratio of 1.5, the total nitrogen (TN) removal rates exceeded 95%. However, the removal efficiency of the system with only pyrite only reached 76.90% when the influent C/N ratio was 6. Pyrite achieved a total phosphorus (TP) removal 10-20% higher than that of the control group. The tidal flow CWs showed enhanced nitrification, and the NH4+-N removal rates increased by approximately 10%, but the increase in dissolved oxygen (DO) was still insufficient to meet the needs of the systems, leading to limited TP removal. The combination of pyrite and alkali-modified RH was optimal for improving the ability of constructed wetlands to treat wastewaters, simultaneously removing nitrogen and phosphorus from sewage containing low C/N ratios. Combined with the tidal flow mode strategy, the use of pyrite and alkali-modified RH as substrates showed substantial advantages for improving water quality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hyomental distance (HMD), an anatomical feature of the upper airway, can be measured precisely by ultrasonography. But the sensitivity and specificity of HMD compared to thyromental distance (TMD) to predict difficult airways is still unknown. METHODS: A case-cohort study was conducted. The written informed consent was obtained. Elective surgery adult patients undergoing general anaesthesia and tracheal intubation were recruited. The other inclusion criteria were: no maxillofacial deformity, trauma, airway stenosis, known difficult airway. The exclusion criteria were: tracheal intubations or operations were canceled, or patients' data were missing. HMD ultrasound measurements of patients in a sniffing position and other usual airway evaluations were performed before general anaesthesia induction. The primary outcome was the intubation difficulty level. Predictive values were calculated. RESULTS: We successfully enrolled 2357 patients (62 difficult intubation patients) in the cohort study for analysis. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of the HMD and TMD for predicting difficult intubation was 0.86 (95% CI, 0.84-0.87) and 0.77 (95% CI, 0.75-0.78) respectively (comparison: P < 0.001). With an optimal cut-off value of HMD ≤ 4.9 cm, we observed a sensitivity and specificity of 0.90 (95% CI, 0.80-0.96) and 0.73 (95% CI, 0.71-0.75). Meanwhile, with TMD ≤ 7.0 cm, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.77 (95% CI, 0.65-0.87) and 0.65 (95% CI, 0.63-0.67) respectively. CONCLUSION: In comparison to TMD, HMD measured by ultrasound was more sensitive in predicting difficult intubation.
