RESUMO

Environmental enrichment has the potential to improve the welfare and post-release survival of hatchery fish stocked for conservation purposes. However, the effectiveness of environmental enrichment is partly dependent on the fish species, life stage, and specific enrichment structure used. To enhance the effectiveness of environmental enrichment, it is crucial to focus on characteristic differences in enrichment structures, such as type and level. This study investigated how differences in enrichment type and level affected physiological and behavioral aspects of the welfare of pre-release juvenile rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus by evaluating growth performance, basal and stressed cortisol levels, antioxidant enzyme activities, and exploratory behaviors regarding anxiety and flexibility. Fish were reared for 4 weeks in different enrichment treatments: barren, low-level cover structure, high-level cover structure, low-level interference structure (LI), and high-level interference structure (HI). The results revealed that fish reared with the LI treatment showed less anxiety and greater flexibility with respect to exploratory behaviors, without oxidative damage being detected. Despite exhibiting less anxiety as well, fish reared in the HI treatment had oxidative damage, indicated by lower superoxide dismutase activity, compared to those in the barren treatment. In addition, none of these enrichment structures enhanced growth performance or mitigate chronic and acute stress responses. Overall, the low-level interference structure may be more favorable in promoting the behavioral welfare of the fish. Application of this type and level of enrichment may increase the survival of the hatchery fish after release, which is critical to stocking success.

RESUMO

A compact millimeter-wave on-chip sensor for dielectric detection is presented using gallium arsenide technology based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs). The proposed structure is developed from traditional half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) and its dispersion characteristics is analyzed through electromagnetic simulations. Consequently, the operating frequency and bandwidth of the on-chip sensor can be easily adjusted, which provides more flexibility for the practical application of the sensor. The linear sensing for relative dielectric constant of the film materials is acquired, with thickness-insensitive property. Moreover, the low coupling to the nearby components can be achieved due to the strong field confinement characteristics of the SSPPs, which is of great significance in the application scenarios of on-chip integrated circuits for the suppression of electromagnetic interference.

RESUMO

In this paper, a dual-band terahertz absorber based on metamaterial structure is designed, fabricated, and measured. The metal periodic array is located on the upper surface of a silicon wafer with a metal ground plane, while the metamaterial structure is created utilizing a square metal ring with four T-shaped metal strips loaded inside of the ring. Two absorption peaks are realized at 0.715 and 1.013 THz with high Q-factors of 152.1 and 98.3, respectively, under normal TE and TM polarized incidence. A prototype of the proposed metamaterial absorber is fabricated by electron beam lithography (EBL) and electron beam evaporation (EBE) technology. Furthermore, a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) measurement system is employed to test the absorber sample, with good measurement results obtained. This work provides a new option for the design of multi-band terahertz metamaterial absorbers.

RESUMO

The extant marine mussels which belong to the Mytiloidea are widespread species inhabiting mostly coastal waters, with some distributed in the deep sea. To clarify the classification systems and phylogenetic relationships range from genus to family level within Mytiloidea, new sequence was used in a phylogenetic analysis including all the available Mytiloidea mitochondrial genomes. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Vignadula atrata is 15,624 bp in length and contains 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs, atp8 is absent), two ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on 12 PCGs showed that it has a close relationship to Bathymodiolus. The analysis of gene rearrangements in the Pteriomorphia showed that the arrangements are highly variable across species, novel gene rearrangements were found within Mytiloidea. The V. atrata mitogenome was provided in detail, with notes on the sequence and a key to the species of Vignadula. This study provides a perspective on the taxonomic histories of the marine mussels and refines the unclear relationship between the origin and evolution of species in Mytiloidea within Bivalvia.

RESUMO

We numerically demonstrate a tunable dual-band terahertz metamaterial absorber (MA) with near-unity absorption using single-layer square graphene ring structure with T-shaped graphene strips. By periodically loading four T-shaped graphene strips to the square graphene ring periodic array without additionally increasing the size of MA device, the pre-existing resonant frequency will have a red shift and simultaneously a new resonance will be generated at higher frequency for achieving a dual-band MA. The two absorption peaks can be tuned to the resonant frequencies of interest by varying the parameters of the square graphene ring and T-shaped graphene strips. The operating frequency of the absorption spectrum can be also manipulated by adjusting the chemical potential of graphene, without changing their geometric parameters. Additionally, numerical results show that the proposed MA possesses polarization-independent and incident-angle-insensitive properties. To further extend the proposed structure's application with more absorption peaks, a tri-band MA is investigated through adding four more T-shaped graphene strips based on the dual-band absorber configuration. Therefore, our research work will be a good candidate for the design of various graphene-based tunable multi-band absorbers at different frequency regions with potential applications in optoelectronic devices and systems.

RESUMO

Terahertz (THz) broadband spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) using new structure of ultra-compact split-ring grooves are proposed. The high-order mode propagation is highly concentrated around the proposed structure with lower radiation loss implying improved operating bandwidth. More importantly, a size reduction of 83.5% can be realized as compared to the traditional grounded SSPP structure with the same high-order asymptotic frequency. To further verify the proposed idea, a similar structure in microwave regime is designed and measured, where the excitation is easily achieved by directly connecting the microstrip line to the proposed SSPP waveguide. The gradient transition section, such as flaring ground, can be avoided, which decreases the waveguide's longitudinal and transversal lengths and simplifies the design procedure. The measured results of the microwave prototype illustrate that it has good lowpass filtering performance, in which the reflection coefficient is better than -10 dB up to 13 GHz, with the smallest and worst insertion losses of 0.5 dB and 4.5 dB, respectively. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work presents THz high-order broadband SSPP propagation for the first time, having significant potential for plasmonic integrated circuits application at microwave/THz frequencies.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) such as graphene and black phosphorus (BP) have aroused considerable attentions in the past few years. Engineering and enhancing their light-matter interaction is possible due to their support for localized surface plasmon resonances in the infrared regime. In this paper, we have proposed an infrared broadband absorber consisting of multilayer graphene-BP nanoparticles sandwiched between dielectric layers. Benefiting from the properties of graphene and BP, the absorber exhibits both perfect broadband responses and strong anisotropy beyond individual graphene and BP layers. The absorber is tunable with the variation of geometric parameters as well as the doping levels of graphene and BP. The physical insight is revealed by electric field distributions. Furthermore, the angular robustness for incident wave is investigated. The proposed anisotropic omnidirectional broadband absorber may have promising potential applications in various biosensing, communication and imaging systems.

RESUMO

Currently, wireless sensor network (WSN) protocols are mainly used to achieve low power consumption of the network, but there are few studies on the quality of services (QoS) of these networks. Coverage can be used as a measure of the WSN's QoS, which can further reflect the quality of data information. Additionally, the coverage requirements of regional monitoring target points are different in real applications. On this basis, this paper proposes an energy-efficient clustering routing protocol based on a high-QoS node deployment with an inter-cluster routing mechanism (EECRP-HQSND-ICRM) in WSNs. First, this paper proposes formula definitions for information integrity, validity, and redundancy from the coverage rate and introduces a node deployment strategy based on twofold coverage. Then, in order to satisfy the uniformity of the distribution of cluster heads (CHs), the monitoring area is divided into four small areas centered on the base station (BS), and the CHs are selected in the respective cells. Finally, combined with the practical application of the WSN, this paper optimizes the Dijkstra algorithm, including: (1) nonessential paths neglecting considerations, and (2) a simultaneous introduction of end-to-end weights and path weights, achieving the selection of optimal information transmission paths between the CHs. The simulation results show that, compared with the general node deployment strategies, the deployment strategy of the proposed protocol has higher information integrity and validity, as well as lower redundancy. Meanwhile, compared with some classic protocols, this protocol can greatly reduce and balance network energy consumption and extend the network lifetime.

RESUMO

We numerically demonstrate a tunable broadband terahertz absorber with near-unity absorption by using multilayer graphene ribbons sandwiched in a plasmonic integrated structure. By stacking slightly different widths of graphene ribbons in a sandwiched configuration, the absorption bandwidth can be increased because of the different resonant modes closely positioned together. The absorption spectrum's center frequency can be manipulated by varying the graphene's chemical potential, which provides a flexible way to design and optimize absorption property after fabrication. Furthermore, the structure can tolerate a wide range of incident angles, while the improved structure with graphene nanoparticles also shows polarization-independent feature. In this routine, stacking more graphene ribbons or particles with well-designed dimensions can further increase the bandwidth, as long as the metamaterial dimension satisfies the sub-wavelength condition. Therefore, our research provides an important theoretical guide for designing various graphene-based tunable broadband absorbers at terahertz, infrared, and microwave frequencies. This may have promising applications in imaging, sensing, and novel optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Complement component 3 (C3) plays a central role in the complement system whose activation is essential for all the important functions performed by this system. Here, a novel C3 gene, termed Mc-C3, was identified from thick shell mussel (Mytilus coruscus). The deduced Mc-C3 protein possessed the characteristic structure features present in its homologs and contained the A2M_N_2, ANATO, A2M, A2M_comp, A2M_recep, and C345C domains, as well as the C3 convertase cleavage site, thioester motif, and conserved Cys, His, and Glu residues. Mc-C3 gene constitutively expressed in all examined tissues and predominantly expressed in immune-related tissues such as gills, hemocytes and hepatopancreas. After stimulation with lipopolysaccharide or Cu2+, the expression of Mc-C3 was significantly induced in gills. Further luciferase reporter assays showed the ability for activation of NF-κB signaling transduction of Mc-C3a. Taken together, these results show that C3 may play an essential role in the immune defense of M. coruscus. The present data therefore provide a more detailed insight into the functional activities of the bivalve complement system.

RESUMO

For the aim to study potential detrimental effects induced by Cu exposure at low, environmentally relevant concentrations, the in vivo activities at different levels of biological organisations of thick shell mussel Mytilus coruscus exposed to two levels of copper were assessed. Cu-induced stresses were evaluated through antioxidant responses, DNA damage and genotoxicity. The results revealed significant higher SOD and CAT activities, and MDA concentration in haemocytes of M. coruscus with Cu exposure at 8 µg/L, while only significant accumulation in CAT activity with Cu exposure at 2 µg/L and no significant changes with SOD activity and MDA concentration at this level of Cu exposure. Copper exposure induced DNA damage as induction of OTM value in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. In addition, copper exposure could significantly induced the expressions of MT-10, Hsp70, Hsp90 and C3. The present results deepen the mussels as a suitable model marine invertebrate species to study potential detrimental effects induced by possible toxicants, in combinations at different levels of biological organisations.

RESUMO

To further prolong the lifetime of wireless sensor network (WSN), researchers from various countries have proposed many clustering routing protocols. However, the total network energy consumption of most protocols is not well minimized and balanced. To alleviate this problem, this paper proposes an energy-efficient clustering routing protocol in WSNs. To begin with, this paper introduces a new network structure model and combines the original energy consumption model to construct a new method to determine the optimal number of clusters for the total energy consumption minimization. Based on the balanced energy consumption, then we optimize the AGglomerative NESting (AGNES) algorithm, including: (1) introduction of distance variance, (2) the dual-cluster heads (D-CHs) division of the energy balance strategy, and (3) the node dormancy mechanism. In addition, the CHs priority function is constructed based on the residual energy and position of the node. Finally, we simulated this protocol in homogeneous networks (the initial energy = 0.4 J, 0.6 J and 0.8 J) and heterogeneous networks (the initial energy = 0.4⁻0.8 J). Simulation results show that our proposed protocol can reduce the network energy consumption decay rate, prolong the network lifetime, and improve the network throughput in the above two networks.

RESUMO

Terahertz (THz) waves have garnered significant interest across various fields, particularly in high-sensitivity sensing applications. Metamaterials can be employed in THz sensors, specifically for refractive index sensing and pesticide detection due to their high-sensitivity characteristics. In this Article, a dual-band flexible THz metamaterial sensor based on polyimide is proposed for refractive index and pesticide sensing, which is fabricated using ultraviolet (UV) lithography technology and measured by a THz time-domain spectroscope (TDS) system. The resonant frequencies of the sensor are at 0.37 and 1.13 THz, with transmission rates of 2.9% and 0.3%, respectively. With an analyte layer attached to the sensor's surface, the sensitivity of refractive index sensing can be calculated as 0.09 and 0.28 THz/RIU (refractive index unit) at the two resonant frequencies. In order to validate the exceptional pesticide sensing performance of the sensor, chlorpyrifos-methyl acetone solutions with various concentrations are added on it. Furthermore, a monolayer of graphene is coated on the sensor's surface, which is proved capable of improving pesticide sensing sensitivity at low concentrations due to strong π-π stacking interactions with π-electrons in chlorpyrifos-methyl solutions. Therefore, the graphene-coated sensor can be utilized in detecting pesticide solutions with low concentrations, and the sensor without graphene is preferred for high concentration detection. This work provides a novel option for the THz metamaterial sensor with high sensitivity covering a wide pesticide concentration range.

RESUMO

For the purpose of determining the placement of Calyptraeidae within the Littorinimorpha, we hereby furnish a thorough analysis of the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequence of Desmaulus extinctorium. This mitogenome spans 16,605 base pairs and encompasses the entire set of 37 genes, including 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs and two rRNAs, with an evident AT bias. Notably, tRNASer1 and tRNASer2 lack dihydrouracil (DHU) arms, resulting in an inability to form a secondary structure. Similarly, tRNAAla lacks a TΨC arm, rendering it incapable of forming a secondary structure. In contrast, the remaining tRNAs demonstrate a characteristic secondary structure reminiscent of a cloverleaf. A comparison with ancestral gastropods reveals distinct differences in three gene clusters (or genes), encompassing 15 tRNAs and eight PCGs. Notably, inversions and translocations represent the major types of rearrangements observed in D. extinctorium. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrates robust support for a monophyletic grouping of all Littorinimorpha species, with D. extinctorium representing a distinct Calyptraeoidea clade. In summary, this investigation provides the first complete mitochondrial dataset for a species of the Calyptraeidae, thus providing novel insights into the phylogenetic relationships within the Littorinimorpha.

RESUMO

Nerita yoldii is a euryhaline species commonly found in the intertidal zone. To investigate the genetic diversity of 233 N. yoldii individuals from eight locations along the coast of China, we utilized the mitochondrial COI gene as a molecular marker. A total of 34 haplotypes were detected, exhibiting a mean haplotype diversity (Hd) of 0.5915 and a mean nucleotide diversity (Pi) of 0.0025, indicating high levels of genetic diversity among all populations. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated that the primary source of genetic variation occurs within populations. In addition, neutral tests and mismatch analyses suggested that N. yoldii populations may have experienced bottleneck events. Moderate genetic differentiation was observed between Xiapu and other populations, excluding the Taizhou population, and may be attributed to the ocean currents. Intensively studying the genetic variation and population structure of N. yoldii populations contributes to understanding the current population genetics of N. yoldii in the coastal regions of China. This not only provides a reference for the study of other organisms in the same region but also lays the foundation for the systematic evolution of the Neritidae family.

RESUMO

Background: Despite the Caridean shrimps' vast species richness and ecological diversity, controversies persist in their molecular classification. Within Caridea, the Pandalidae family exemplifies significant taxonomic diversity. As of June 25, 2023, GenBank hosts only nine complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) for this family. The Plesionika genus within Pandalidae is recognized as polyphyletic. To improve our understanding of the mitogenome evolution and phylogenetic relationships of Caridea, this study introduces three novel mitogenome sequences from the Plesionika genus: P.  ortmanni, P. izumiae and P. lophotes. Methods: The complete mitochondrial genomes of three Plesionika species were sequenced utilizing Illumina's next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology. After assembling and annotating the mitogenomes, we conducted structural analyses to examine circular maps, sequence structure characteristics, base composition, amino acid content, and synonymous codon usage frequency. Additionally, phylogenetic analysis was performed by integrating existing mitogenome sequences of true shrimp available in GenBank. Results: The complete mitogenomes of the three Plesionika species encompass 37 canonical genes, comprising 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), and one control region (CR). The lengths of these mitogenomes are as follows: 15,908 bp for P. ortmanni, 16,074 bp for P. izumiae and 15,933 bp for P. lophotes. Our analyses extended to their genomic features and structural functions, detailing base composition, gene arrangement, and codon usage. Additionally, we performed selection pressure analysis on the PCGs of all Pandalidae species available in Genbank, indicating evolutionary purification selection acted on the PCGs across Pandalidae species. Compared with the ancestral Caridea, translocation of two tRNA genes, i.e., trnP or trnT, were found in the two newly sequenced Plesionika species-P. izumiae and P. lophotes. We constructed a phylogenetic tree of Caridea using the sequences of 13 PCGs in mitogenomes. The results revealed that family Pandalidae exhibited robust monophyly, while genus Plesionika appeared to be a polyphyletic group. Conclusions: Gene rearrangements within the Pandalidae family were observed for the first time. Furthermore, a significant correlation was discovered between phylogenetics of the Caridea clade and arrangement of mitochondrial genes. Our findings offer a detailed exploration of Plesionika mitogenomes, laying a crucial groundwork for subsequent investigations into genetic diversity, phylogenetic evolution, and selective breeding within this genus.

RESUMO

The fertilized eggs of cuttlefish are sticky eggs. Cuttlefish parents prefer to lay eggs on the attached substrates, which help increase the number of eggs and the hatching rate of fertilized eggs. If egg-attached substrates are sufficient, cuttlefish spawning will be reduced or even delayed. With the advances in the construction of marine nature reserves and research on artificial enrichment techniques, domestic and international experts have conducted research on different types and configurations of attachment substrates around cuttlefish resource enhancement. Based on the source of the substrates, we classified cuttlefish spawning substrates into two types, natural and artificial. By summarizing the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of the common economic cuttlefish spawning substrates in offshore areas worldwide, we sort out the functions of two different types of attachment bases, and discussed the practical applications of natural and artificial egg-attached substrates in spawning ground restoration and artificial enrichment. We proposed several thoughts on the future research directions of cuttlefish spawning attachment substrates, aiming to provide reasonable suggestions for cuttlefish habitat restoration, cuttlefish breeding and sustainable development of fishery resources.

RESUMO

To further understand the origin and evolution of Palaemonidae (Decapoda: Caridea), we determined the mitochondrial genome sequence of Palaemon macrodactylus and Palaemon tenuidactylus. The entire mitochondrial genome sequences of these two Palaemon species encompassed 37 typical genes, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and a control region (CR). The lengths of their mitochondrial genomes were 15,744 bp (P. macrodactylus) and 15,735 bp (P. tenuidactylus), respectively. We analyzed their genomic features and structural functions. In comparison with the ancestral Decapoda, these two newly sequenced Palaemon species exhibited a translocation event, where the gene order was trnK-trnD instead of trnD-trnK. Based on phylogenetic analysis constructed from 13 PCGs, the 12 families from Caridea can be divided into four major clades. Furthermore, it was revealed that Alpheidae and Palaemonidae formed sister groups, supporting the monophyly of various families within Caridea. These findings highlight the significant gene rearrangements within Palaemonidae and provide valuable evidence for the phylogenetic relationships within Caridea.

RESUMO

To improve the taxonomy and systematics of Porcellanidae within the evolution of Anomura, we describe the complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) sequence of Pisidiaserratifrons, which is 15,344 bp in size, contains the entire set of 37 genes and has an AT-rich region. Compared with the pancrustacean ground pattern, at least five gene clusters (or genes) are significantly different with the typical genes, involving eleven tRNA genes and four PCGs and the tandem duplication/random loss and recombination models were used to explain the observed large-scale gene re-arrangements. The phylogenetic results showed that all Porcellanidae species clustered together as a group with well nodal support. Most Anomura superfamilies were found to be monophyletic, except Paguroidea. Divergence time estimation implies that the age of Anomura is over 225 MYA, dating back to at least the late Triassic. Most of the extant superfamilies and families arose during the late Cretaceous to early Tertiary. In general, the results obtained in this study will contribute to a better understanding of gene re-arrangements in Porcellanidae mitogenomes and provide new insights into the phylogeny of Anomura.

RESUMO

In this paper, a dual-band metamaterial absorber in the terahertz frequencies is proposed and its refractive index sensing characteristics is analyzed. The metamaterial structure is designed using a square metal ring with four T-shaped strips loaded outside of the ring, where the metal periodic array is on top of a silicon wafer backed with a metal ground plane. The resonant frequencies of the absorber are at 0.89 and 1.36 THz, whose absorption rates are both over 99% under normal TE and TM polarized incidences. The full widths at half maximum of them are 4.4 and 11.2 GHz, respectively, resulting in high quality factors (Q-factors) for these two frequency bands. The absorption rate of the absorber remains stable as the incident and polarized angles are changed. Several proposed metamaterial absorbers are experimentally fabricated and electron beam lithography (EBL) technology is employed. Good measurement results of the dual-band absorption performance are obtained using a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system based on photoconductive antennas. Furthermore, the metamaterial absorber also shows sensing properties for analytes with different refractive indices or thicknesses. This work provides a new choice for the design of high-Q dual-band terahertz metamaterial absorbers and their application to refractive index sensing.
