RESUMO

Nanoparticles (NPs) can be conjugated with diverse biomolecules and employed in biosensing to detect target analytes in biological samples. This proven concept was primarily used during the COVID-19 pandemic with gold-NP-based lateral flow assays (LFAs). Considering the gold price and its worldwide depletion, here we show that novel plasmonic NPs based on inexpensive metals, titanium nitride (TiN) and copper covered with a gold shell (Cu@Au), perform comparable to or even better than gold nanoparticles. After conjugation, these novel nanoparticles provided high figures of merit for LFA testing, such as high signals and specificity and robust naked-eye signal recognition. Since the main cost of Au NPs in commercial testing kits is the colloidal synthesis, our development with the Cu@Au and the laser-ablation-fabricated TiN NPs is exciting, offering potentially inexpensive plasmonic nanomaterials for various bioapplications. Moreover, our machine learning study showed that biodetection with TiN is more accurate than that with Au.

Chondrocyte survival is critical for the preservation of a healthy cartilage matrix. Limited chondrocyte function and survival can result in articular cartilage failure, thereby contributing to osteoarthritis (OA). In this study, miR-5581 was significantly up-regulated in OA samples, and miR-5581-associated genes were enriched in Kras signaling. miR-5581 up-regulation was observed in clinical OA samples and IL-1ß-stimulated chondrocytes. miR-5581 inhibition attenuated IL-1ß-induced chondrocyte proliferation suppression, extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis suppression and degradation, and IL-1ß-suppressed Kras signaling activation. miR-5581 was targeted to inhibit NRF1. In IL-1ß-treated chondrocytes, NRF1 overexpression attenuated IL-1ß-induced cellular damage and partially abolished the effects of miR-5581 overexpression on IL-1ß-stimulated chondrocytes. NRF1 was down-regulated in knee joint cartilage of OA mice. In conclusion, miR-5581, which was up-regulated in OA samples and IL-1ß-stimulated chondrocytes, inhibited chondrocyte proliferation and ECM synthesis, and promoted ECM degradation through targeting NRF1, whereby Kras signaling might be involved.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have confirmed that low shear stress (LSS) induces glycocalyx disruption, leading to endothelial dysfunction. However, the role of autophagy in LSS-induced glycocalyx disruption and relevant mechanism are not clear. In this study, we hypothesized that LSS may promote autophagy, disrupting the endothelium glycocalyx. METHODS: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were subjected to physiological shear stress and LSS treatments, followed by the application of autophagy inducers and inhibitors. Additionally, cells were treated with specific matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) inhibitor. The expression of autophagic markers, glycocalyx, MMP-2, and MMP-9 was measured. RESULTS: LSS impacted the expression of endothelium autophagy markers, increasing the expression of LC3II.LC3I-1 and Beclin-1, and decreasing the levels of p62, accompanied by glycocalyx disturbance. Moreover, LSS upregulated the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and downregulated the levels of syndecan-1 and heparan sulfate (HS). Additionally, expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was increased by an autophagy promoter but was decreased by autophagy inhibitor treatment under LSS. Autophagy and MMP-2 and MMP-9 further caused glycocalyx disruption. CONCLUSION: LSS promotes autophagy, leading to glycocalyx disruption. Autophagy increases the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9, which are correlated with the glycocalyx destruction induced by LSS.

To investigate the cell-cell interactions of intergeneric bacterial species, the study detected the survival of Enterococcus faecalis (Ef) under monospecies or coaggregation state with Fusobacterium nucleatum subsp. polymorphum (Fnp) in environmental stress. Ef and Fnp infected the human macrophages with different forms (Ef and Fnp monospecies, Ef-Fnp coaggregates, Ef + Fnp cocultures) for exploring the immunoregulatory effects and the relevant molecular mechanisms. Meanwhile, the transcriptomic profiles of coaggregated Ef and Fnp were analyzed. Ef was shown to coaggregate with Fnp strongly in CAB within 90 min by forming multiplexes clumps. Coaggregation with Fnp reinforced Ef resistance against unfavorable conditions including alkaline, hypertonic, nutrient-starvation, and antibiotic challenges. Compared with monospecies and coculture species, the coaggregation of Ef and Fnp significantly facilitates both species to invade dTHP-1 cells and aid Ef to survive within the cells. Compared with coculture species, dual-species interaction of Ef and Fnp significantly decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-α, and chemokines MCP-1 secreted by dTHP-1 cells and lessened the phosphorylation of p38, JNK, and p65 signaling pathways. The transcriptome sequencing results showed that 111 genes were differentially expressed or Ef-Fnp coaggregated species compared to Ef monospecies; 651 genes were differentially expressed for Fnp when coaggregation with Ef. The analysis of KEGG pathway showed that Ef differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched in quorum sensing and arginine biosynthesis pathway; Fnp DEGs were differentially concentrated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) biosynthesis, biofilm formation, and lysine degradation pathway compared to monospecies. KEY POINTS: • Coaggregated with Fnp aids Ef's survival in environmental stress, especially in root canals after endodontic treatment. • The coaggregation of Ef and Fnp may weaken the pro-inflammatory response and facilitate Ef to evade killed by macrophages. • The coaggregation between Ef and Fnp altered interspecies transcriptional profiles.

Mycotoxin contamination is widespread in plants and herbs, posing serious threats to the consumer and human health. Of them, alternariol (AOH) has attracted great attention as an "emerging" mycotoxin in medicinal herbs. However, a specific and high-throughput extraction method for AOH is currently lacking. Thus, developing an efficient pre-treatment technique for AOH detection is extremely vital. Here, a novel automated magnetic solid-phase extraction method was proposed for the highly efficient extraction of AOH. Combining the aptamer-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (AMNPs) and the automatic purification instrument, AOH could be extracted in medicinal herbs in high throughput (20 samples) and a short time (30 min). The main parameters affecting extraction were optimized, and the method was finally carried out by incubation AMNPs with 3 mL of sample solution for 10 min, and then desorption in 75% methanol for liquid-phase detection. Under optimal conditions, good reproducibility, stability, and selectivity were realized with an adsorption capacity of 550.84 ng/mg. AOH extraction in three edible herbs showed good resistance to matrix interference with recovery rates from 86% to 111%. In combination with AMNPs and the automatic purification instrument, high-throughput and labor-free extraction of AOH in different complex matrices was achieved, which could be extended in other complex matrices.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the risk factors associated with frozen shoulder patients and further analyze the relationship between gender and diabetes with frozen shoulder. METHOD: We have reviewed the data of 1205 frozen shoulder patients in China's Xinjiang region from 2018 to 2023. The collected information included patients' gender, occupation, place of origin, marital status, age, the season of disease onset, duration of illness, etiology, surgical history, hypertension, diabetes, respiratory diseases, knee joint disease, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, rheumatoid arthritis, hyperuricemia, sleep quality, smoking and alcohol consumption, and constipation. We have used multifactor logistic regression analysis to identify the risk factors for a frozen shoulder. RESULTS: Single-factor logistic regression analysis showed that the number of females, patients with diabetes, knee joint disease, constipation, and patients with poor sleep quality in the observation group are higher than in the control group (P < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of occupation, place of origin, marital status, age, season of disease onset, duration of illness, etiology, surgical history, hypertension, respiratory diseases, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, rheumatoid arthritis, hyperuricemia, smoking, and alcohol consumption history (P > 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that the final model included four variables: gender, diabetes history, sleep, and constipation. Among them, the OR values of gender and diabetes history were more significant than 1, indicating that they were independent risk factors for frozen shoulder, while the OR values of sleep and constipation were less than 1, suggesting that they were negatively associated with the occurrence of frozen shoulder. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that gender and diabetes are independent risk factors for frozen shoulder. Additionally, poor sleep quality and constipation also can be correlated with the occurrence of a frozen shoulder.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of clinically avoidable enteral nutrition interruptions is high. ICU nurses, as the implementers and monitors of enteral nutrition, have a close relationship between their cognitive level of enteral nutrition interruption and the incidence of enteral nutrition interruption. The level of ICU nurses' cognition of enteral nutrition interruption and the key factors influencing the level of ICU nurses' cognition of enteral nutrition interruption are not known. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore the cognitive level of ICU nurses on enteral nutrition interruption and delve into the key factors that affect their cognitive level from the perspective of management. DESIGN: A sequential explanatory mixed methods research design was used. METHODS: With the convenience sampling method, an online survey questionnaire was distributed to ICU nurses in Chongqing, and 336 valid questionnaires were collected. After the survey, ICU managers were invited to participate in qualitative interviews, in which 10 participants from five hospitals completed face-to-face individual semi-structured interviews and were analyzed with thematic analysis. RESULTS: The survey found that ICU nurses had a good level of cognition towards enteral nutrition interruption but poor knowledge about the definition, causes, and consequences of enteral nutrition interruption, as well as negative attitudes toward active learning, assessment, and communication. And the longer work time in the ICU, joining the nutrition team, receiving systematic training, and acquiring relevant knowledge from academic journals more frequently were favorable to improving ICU nurses' knowledge level of enteral nutrition interruption. Personal interviews further identified the key factors affecting their cognitive level, including (1) lack of knowledge, (2) lack of proactive thinking, (3) lack of enteral nutrition management programs, and (4) lack of quality management tools for enteral nutrition interruption. CONCLUSION: Although ICU nurses demonstrate a relatively high level of cognition, there is still room for improvement. ICU administrators must take specific measures to improve the knowledge of ICU nurses, especially in non-tertiary hospitals, in order to prevent nurse-induced enteral nutrition interruption in all ICUs and improve medical quality. OBJECTIVE: The relationship between gout and osteoporosis is poorly clarified, and the association between gout and fractures incidence remains controversial. Hence, in the present study, we aimed to comprehensively evaluate the available literature to elucidate whether gout is associated with an increased risk of both osteoporosis and fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted an exhaustive search of pertinent literature published until 20 March 2023, in well-recognized databases, namely Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library, focusing on examining the association between gout and the risk of osteoporosis or fracture. Meta-analysis was performed to aggregate the relative risks (RR) using random- or fixed-effects models. Sensitivity analyses were conducted iteratively, whereby each study was removed sequentially to gauge its impact on the overall outcome. Publication bias was assessed using Egger's and Begg's tests. This study was registered with PROSPERO (registry number: CRD42022376822). RESULTS: Herein, we included 10 observational studies comprising a total of 1,606,095 participants. An independent population sample of four studies validated the significant association between gout and osteoporosis (RR = 1.25, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05-1.48), with the results demonstrating robustness. However, our analysis did not detect any association between gout and fracture risk when compared with the control group (RR = 1.09, 95%CI 0.99-1.19), along with high heterogeneity (p for heterogeneity = 0.000; I2 = 79.7%). Further subgroup analysis revealed that gout is positively associated with fracture risk in the Chinese population (RR = 1.17, 95%CI 1.14-1.21), with no evidence of heterogeneity (p for heterogeneity = 0.420; I2 = 0.00%). CONCLUSION: Our meticulous evaluation of the available literature indicates that gout has no discernible impact on fracture incidence, although it is positively associated with an enhanced risk of osteoporosis. Therefore, it is imperative to prioritize preventive measures to prevent osteoporotic complications in individuals diagnosed with gout.

In the realm of online social networks, the spreading of information is influenced by a complex interplay of factors. To explore the dynamics of one-time retweet information spreading, we propose a Susceptible-Infected-Completed (SIC) multi-information spreading model. This model captures how multiple pieces of information interact in online social networks by introducing inhibiting and enhancement factors. The SIC model considers the completed state, where nodes cease to spread a particular piece of information after transmitting it. It also takes into account the impact of past and present information received from neighboring nodes, dynamically calculating the probability of nodes spreading each piece of information at any given moment. To analyze the dynamics of multiple information pieces in various scenarios, such as mutual enhancement, partial competition, complete competition, and coexistence of competition and enhancement, we conduct experiments on BA scale-free networks and the Twitter network. Our findings reveal that competing information decreases the likelihood of its spread while cooperating information amplifies the spreading of mutually beneficial content. Furthermore, the strength of the enhancement factor between different information pieces determines their spread when competition and cooperation coexist. These insights offer a fresh perspective for understanding the patterns of information propagation in multiple contexts.

Fifty-four obese patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) were selected for this study were randomly divided into an exercise group (16 men and 11 women, mean age 21.3 ± 1.0) and control group (16 men and 11 women, mean age 21.8 ± 0.8). The exercise group underwent a 12-week FATmax exercise intervention, while the control group did not engage in any type of systematic physical activity. The controlled diet was given to both groups. After the test, the microvascular reactivity of the exercise group was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05). After the experiment, the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA), the activity of catalase (CAT) and the activity of exercise group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p < 0.05); and in contrast the activities of total superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) were significantly higher than those of the control group (p< 0.05). The change in microcirculation function caused by 12-week FATmax intensity exercise may have an interaction mechanism with oxidative stress and antioxidant system function, and may improve the microvascular reactivity of obese NAFLD patients. In addition, also may improve of oxidative stress and antioxidant system functions.

Internal mildewed nutmeg is difficult to perceive without cutting the nutmeg open and examining it carefully, which poses a significant risk to public health. At present, macroscopic identification and chromatographic analysis are applied to determine whether nutmeg is moldy or not. However, the former relies on a human panel, with the disadvantages of subjectivity and empirical dependence, whilst the latter is generally time-consuming and requires organic solvents. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a rapid and feasible approach for evaluating the quality and predicting mildew in nutmeg. In this study, the quality and odor characteristics of five groups of nutmeg samples with different degrees of mildew were analyzed by using the responses of an electronic nose combined with chemical profiling. The main physicochemical indicators, such as the levels of α-pinene, ß-pinene, elemicin, and dehydro-di-isoeugenol, were determined. The results revealed that the contents of α-pinene, ß-pinene, and elemicin changed significantly with the extension of storage time. Through the use of an electronic nose and HS-GC-MS technology to assess the overall odor characteristics of nutmeg samples, it was found that the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ammonia/organic amines, carbon monoxide, ethanol, and hydrogen sulfide, as well as changes in the terpene and phenylpropene components of the nutmeg itself, may be the material basis for the changes in odor. The accuracy of the qualitative classification model for the degree of mildew in nutmeg was higher than 90% according to the electronic nose data combined with different machine learning algorithms. Quantitative models were established for predicting the contents of the chemical components, and models based on a BP neural network (BPNN), the support vector machine (SVM), and the random forest algorithm (RF) all showed good performance in predicting the concentrations of these chemical components, except for dehydro-di-isoeugenol. The BPNN performed effectively in predicting the storage time of nutmeg on the basis of the E-nose's responses, with an RMSE and R2 of 0.268 and 0.996 for the training set, and 0.317 and 0.993 for the testing set, respectively. The results demonstrated that the responses of the electronic nose (E-nose) had a high correlation with the internal quality of nutmeg. This work proposes a quick and non-destructive evaluation method for the quality of nutmeg, which has high accuracy in discriminating between different degrees of mold in nutmeg and is conducive to early detection and warning of moldy phenomena.

BACKGROUND: Three kinds of diet containing chicken protein isolate (CPI), bovine milk protein isolate (BMPI), and soy protein isolate (SPI), respectively, were designed to investigate the influences of proteins on cognitive levels and related mechanisms in mice. RESULTS: A Morris water maze (MWM) test showed that the SPI group had a higher cognitive level than the BMPI group. Immunohistochemical staining and chemical analysis of the hippocampus showed that the SPI group had higher synaptophysin expression, doublecortin-positive cell proportion, superoxide dismutase activity, and lower malondialdehyde content compared with the BMPI group. The same parameters in the CPI group were between those of the BMPI and SPI groups. Microbiome sequencing indicated that the three groups differed significantly at the phylum, genus, and species levels, with higher microbial alpha diversity in the CPI and SPI groups. The association of intestinal microbiota with cognitive improvement was also assessed. The present study suggests that soy protein may increase cognitive function by the gut-brain axis. CONCLUSION: In contrast with CPI and BMPI, SPI had a better effect on improving the cognitive level in mice, which was achieved through the regulation of hippocampal neural growth, oxidative stress, and intestinal microbiota. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Hyperglycaemia is common in critically ill adult patients. Many studies have identified the content, methods, and effects of glycaemic control but have not explored the effects of knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) on glycaemic control in critically ill adults. Various factors also influence the KAP of intensive care unit (ICU) staff. AIMS: To assess KAP regarding glucose management for critically ill adults among nurses and medical professionals and identify the factors that influence their KAP in ICUs. METHODS: A multicentre cross-sectional survey. RESULTS: In total, 403/459 (response rate: 87.8%) participants from ICUs in nine tertiary hospitals in China participated in this study, 82.4% of whom were female and 93.4% of whom were nurses. The mean work experience was 8.88 years, and the mean critical care experience was 6.59 years. The scoring rate for the three dimensions of knowledge, attitudes, and practices were 82.35%, 87.69%, and 76%, respectively. We did not find any other factors affecting the KAP scores except for the level of knowledge awareness (p < 0.001), awareness of the importance (p < 0.001), and training for glucose control (p = 0.004). CONCLUSION: ICU staff KAP regarding glycaemic control in critically ill adults among ICU professionals were acceptable in China. However, ICU professionals' current knowledge regarding nutrition, glucose variability, and skills related to glucose management could be improved. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: ICU educators should provide more skills-related training for healthcare professionals in the glycaemic management of critically ill adults. Moreover, the process of managing blood glucose in adult ICU patients is a collaborative, multidisciplinary team effort, with monitoring and feedback required during implementation.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of major infectious diseases represent a tremendous threat to people's health, safety and property, yet little is known about the competence of front-line caregivers in such situations. AIM: To construct a model for evaluating the competency of front-line nursing staff during major infectious disease outbreaks and to test the model's reliability and validity. STUDY DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study that took place between November and December 2021, in Chinese hospitals. The model was constructed through literature reviews, descriptive qualitative research, the Delphi method and the analytic hierarchy process. To evaluate the model's validity and reliability, 550 front-line nurses were selected to complete a questionnaire survey, and six experts were invited to conduct a content validity evaluation. Cronbach's α coefficient was used to test the model's reliability, while an exploratory factor analysis was used to measure the structural validity of the model. RESULTS: The model included 57 items. The Cronbach's α coefficient of the model was 0.983, and the content validity index was 0.958. Six common factors were produced by exploratory factor analysis. The cumulative variance contribution rate was 66.718%. After discussion, the original four dimensions were maintained. CONCLUSION: The model for evaluating the competency of front-line nursing staff during an outbreak of major infectious diseases has strong reliability and validity and can be used as a tool to assess the competency level of front-line nursing staff. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This model can provide a useful reference for care managers to accurately evaluate, train and select caregivers during an epidemic.

A bacterial strain, designated S8-55T, was isolated from moraine samples collected from the north slope of Mount Everest at an altitude of 5 500 m above sea level. The purpose of this study was to describe a novel species and its characteristics, through genome sequencing and analysis of the relationship between the members of the genus Paracoccus, and explore the antioxidant capacity of strain S8-55T. The polyphasic study confirmed the affiliation of strain S8-55T with the genus Paracoccus. Strain S8-55T was aerobic, Gram-negative and oxidase- and catalase positive. Cells were orange-pigmented, ellipsoid and had no spore formation, no flagella and no motility. Strain S8-55T grow at 10-37 °C, pH 7-11 and without NaCl. Ubiquinone 10 was its predominant respiratory menaquinone. The polar lipids of strain S8-55T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, an unidentified phospholipid, an unidentified aminolipid and three unidentified lipids. Its major fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c). The G+C content was 64.3 mol%. The phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA sequence showed that strain S8-55T was closely related to Paracoccus angustae E6T (97.9 %), Paracoccus aerius 011410T (97.9 %) and Paracoccus hibisci THG-T2.8T (97.8 %). The average nucleotide identity values among strain S8-55T and P. angustae CCTCC AB 2015056T, P. aerius KCTC 42845T and P. hibisci CCTCC AB 2016181T were 84.1, 84.5 and 76.3 %, respectively. The genome of strain S8-55T contained antioxidant genes such as oxyR, recD, katE, recD and rpoH. Based on its morphological, physiological and chemical taxonomic characteristics, strain S8-55T (=JCM 35 227T=GDMCC 1.3026T) should be classified as a novel species of the genus Paracoccus with the proposed name Paracoccus everestensis sp. nov.

BACKGROUND: Subsyndromal delirium (SSD) refers to the presence of one or more delirium criteria without a diagnosis of delirium, and it is common in older patients. The prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes of SSD are explored herein. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Web of Science, OVID, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, CNKI, CBM, Chongqing VIP, and Wanfang databases were searched for studies published from inception to 2021, without language restrictions. Independent reviewers performed quality assessments, data extraction and analysis for all included studies. RESULTS: A total of 2,426 titles were initially identified, and 22 studies (5,125 individuals) were included in the systematic review. The prevalence of SSD in older adults was 36.4% (95%CI:0.28 to 0.44). Significant risk factors were dementia (OR 5.061, 95%CI:2.320 to 11.043), lower ADL scores (OR 1.706, 95%CI:1.149 to 2.533), lower hemoglobin (SMD -0.21, 95%CI: -0.333 to -0.096), and advanced age (SMD 0.358, 95% CI:0.194 to 0.522), and SSD was associated with poor outcomes, including cognitive and functional decline, increased length of hospital stay, and a higher mortality rate. CONCLUSIONS: SSD has a high prevalence and is associated with many risk factors and poor outcomes. Clinical oversight of patients with SSD should be increased. REGISTRATION: The systematic review was registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Review (CRD42021276070). BACKGROUND: To investigate the effect of a rotary agitation method or ultrasonically activated irrigation on the antibiofilm effect of a mixture of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and etidronate (1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-bisphosphonate, HEBP) using a dual-species biofilm model in root canal system. METHODS: Mature dual-species biofilms of Enterococcus faecalis and Streptococcus gordonii were formed in root canals of mandibular premolars. Teeth were randomly allotted (n = 12) to group 1, XP-endo Finisher (XPF); group 2, ultrasonically activated irrigation (UAI); group 3, syringe-and-needle irrigation (SNI). In all groups, canals were instrumented with a rotary instrument (XP-endo Shaper) prior to irrigant agitation/activation. A mixture containing 2.5% NaOCl and 9% HEBP was used throughout the experiment. Bacterial counts from the canal were determined using qPCR before preparation (S1), after preparation (S2), and after final irrigation agitation/activation (S3). Bacterial viability within the dentinal tubules in the coronal, middle and apical root-thirds was quantified using confocal microscopy after Live/Dead staining. The bacterial counts and viability were compared between groups using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey's tests. Paired t-test was used to compare the bacterial counts within groups. RESULTS: Instrumentation alone could significantly reduce the microbial counts in all the groups (P < 0.0001). Subsequent agitation/activation resulted in significant microbial reduction only in XPF and UAI (P < 0.05), both of which reduced significantly more microbial counts than SNI (P < 0.05). Live/Dead staining revealed that XPF and UAI showed significantly greater percentage of dead bacteria within the dentinal tubules than SNI in the coronal third (P < 0.05); UAI resulted in the significantly highest percentage of dead bacteria in the middle third (P < 0.05); while there was no significant difference between the groups in the apical third (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: When using the sodium hypochlorite/etidronate mixture for irrigation, final irrigant agitation/activation with XP-endo Finisher or ultrasonic can improve disinfection of the main root canal space and the dentinal tubules in the coronal third, while ultrasonically activated irrigation appears to exhibit better disinfection within dentinal tubules in the middle third.

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic element with two species, Tl(I) and Tl(III). We discovered the Tl uptake in rice exposed to Tl(III) hydroponic treatment was significantly lower than that to Tl(I) treatment, but the content of oxalic acid secreted from roots in Tl(III) treatment was higher than that in Tl(I). The physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying the difference between the two Tl species were studied using a hydroponic system. The results showed the reduction of oxalic acid content had no effect on the amount of Tl on the root surface, indicating oxalic acid might not immobilize Tl to affect the Tl uptake. Therefore, the secretion of oxalic acid from roots may not be a strategy for detoxifying Tl in rice. Notably, Tl(III) increased the expression of Oryza sativa H+-ATPase genes OsAs and the activity of H+-ATPase, and decreased potassium transport gene expression of OsKAT1.1 and OsHKT2;4, which indicated that the difference in Tl uptake of rice between the two Tl species mainly cause by the potassium transport system rather than oxalic acid.

Antibacterial photocatalytic therapy (APCT) is considered to be a potential treatment for administrating antibiotic-resistant bacteria. However, due to the low photocatalytic efficiency and weak ability to capture bacteria, it is not practically applied. In this work, an organic-metal oxide hybrid semiconductor heterostructure is fabricated for the photocatalytic generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to kill the drug-resistant bacteria. The organic semiconductor, perylene diimide (PDI), can self-assemble on Sn3 O4 nanosheets to form a "hook-and-loop" sticky surface that can capture bacteria, via large numbers of hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions, which are not possible in inorganic semiconductors. This easy-to-fabricate hybrid semiconductor also possesses improved photocatalytic activity, which is owing to the formation of heterostructure that achieves full-spectrum absorption, and the reduction of the photocarrier recombination rate to produce more reactive oxygen species. It has a good promoting effect on the wounds of mice infected by Staphylococcus aureus. This work shows new ideas for fabricating smart full-spectrum inorganic-organic hybrid adhesive heterostructure photocatalysts for antibacterial photocatalytic therapy.

A bacterial strain, designated Y40T, was isolated from sandy soil sampled on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. A polyphasic study confirmed the affiliation of the strain with the genus Mesobacillus. Strain Y40T was found to be an aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, motile and rod-shaped bacterium. The strain grew at 10-42 °C, pH 6-9 and with 0-2 % (w/v) NaCl. The diagnostic amino acid was meso-diaminopimeilic acid. MK7 was predominant menaquinone, and iso-C15:0, iso-C17:1 ω10c and anteiso-C15:0 were the major fatty acids. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content was 40.6 mol%. Based on he results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain Y40T was phylogenetically closely related to Mesobacillus zeae JJ-247T and Mesobacillus foraminis CV53T, with similarities of 98.0 and 97.7 %, respectively. The average nucleotide identity (ANIb) values between strain Y40T and Mesobacillus zeae JJ-247T and Mesobacillus foraminis CV53T were 69.9 and 70.0 %, respectively. Based on the morphological, physiological, and chemotaxonomic data, it is proposed that strain Y40T (=CICC 24459T=JCM 32794T) should be classified into the genus Mesobacillus as Mesobacillus harenae sp. nov.
