RESUMO

The development of high value-added lignin-based functional porous carbon electrodes with excellent properties from sustainable industry lignin powder remains a challenge. This work aims to create robust, binder-free, conductive additives-free, and current collector-free monolithic porous carbon electrodes using industrial lignin powder for membrane-free capacitive deionization (CDI). The material exhibits high mechanical strength, hierarchical porosity structure, large uniform size, and thickness of just a few millimetres (<2.6 mm). In a three-electrode supercapacitor system, the areal specific capacitance of CLCA300-3-1.0 reaches 5.03-1.02 F cm-2 when the scan rate between 1 and 20 mV s-1 in 1 M NaCl solution. As CDI electrodes, the charge efficiency of CLCA300-3-1.0 at different voltages of 1.2 V, 1.4 V and 1.6 V is 0.53, 0.72 and 0.71, respectively. The energy consumption of CLCA280-3-1.0, CLCA300-3-1.0 and CLCA320-3-1.0 tested at 1.2 V are 3.27, 3.40 and 3.25 Wh m-3, respectively. In addition, with thickness increasing to 1.5 mm, the developed CLCA300-3-1.5 electrode exhibits an areal adsorption capacity of 0.46 mg cm-2, and relative highly capacity retention of 84.78 % after 70 cycles. The impressive desalination performance is attributed to the well-designed hierarchical porosity, superhydrophilicity and robust monolithic structure.

RESUMO

Recently, C60 has emerged as a promising anode material for Li-ion batteries, attracting significant interest due to its excellent lithium storage capacity. The electrochemical performance of C60 as an anode is largely dependent on its internal crystal structure, which is significantly influenced by the synthesis method and corresponding conditions. However, there have been few reports on how the synthesis process affects the crystal structure and Li+ storage capacity of C60. This study used the liquid-liquid interface precipitation method and a low-temperature annealing process to fabricate one-dimensional C60 nanorods (NRs). We thoroughly investigated synthesis conditions, including the growth time, drying temperature, annealing time, and annealing atmosphere. The results demonstrate that these synthesis conditions directly impact the morphology, phase transition, and electrochemical efficiency of pure C60 NRs. Remarkably, the hexagonal close-packed structural C60 NRs-6012h, in a metastable form, exhibits a reversible Li+ storage capacity as an anode material in Li-ion batteries. Furthermore, the face-centered cubic C60 NRs-603001h electrode shows significantly enhanced rate performance and long-cycle stability. A discharge-specific capacity of 603 mAh g-1 was maintained after 2000 cycles at a current density of 2 A g-1. This study elucidates the effect of synthesis conditions on C60 crystals, offering an effective strategy for preparing high-performance C60 anode materials.

RESUMO

Lignin is a renewable biomacromolecule that can be used as precursors for carbon materials. In this work, highly flexible lignin-based carbon nanofibers with abundant ultra-micropores are constructed via electrospinning, oxidative stabilization and carbonization. The results indicate that replacing PAN with 80 % lignin is feasible in regulating ultra-micropores. The synthesized L4P1-CNFs possess many attractive properties (e.g., pore size distribution, electrochemical and deionization property) compared with that produced from other non-renewable precursors or more-complexed processes. It shows excellent electrochemical double-layer capacitance in 6 M KOH (233 to 162 F g-1 at 0.5 to 5 A g-1) and 1 M NaCl (158 to 82 F g-1 at 0.5 to 5 A g-1) electrolytes. Upon assembling into CDI cells, the average salt adsorption rate could reach 1.79 mg g-1 min-1 at 1.2 V and 3.32 mg g-1 min-1 at 2 V in 500 mg L-1. Benefiting from the excellent flexibility, we innovatively stack four layers of L4P1-CNFs to improve the areal electrosorption capacity to 0.0817 mg cm-2 at 500 mg L-1, significantly higher than that of traditional carbon-based electrodes. The good desalination property makes lignin-based carbon nanofibers ideal for practical, low-cost capacitive deionization applications.

RESUMO

Neonicotinoids are among the most widely used insecticides in the world and are recognized as a potential cause of pollinator decline. Previous studies have demonstrated that the neonicotinoid thiacloprid has adverse effects on foraging and memory behaviors. However, there is no direct evidence linking thiacloprid-induced neuronal cell damage in the brains of honeybees to learning and memory dysfunction. Adult honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) workers were chronically exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of thiacloprid. We discovered that thiacloprid negatively affected their survival, food consumption, and body weight. In addition, sucrose sensitivity and memory performance were impaired. We evaluated the apoptosis of honeybee brain cells using TUNEL (Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated digoxigenin-dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling) and Caspase-3 assays, which revealed that thiacloprid increases the dose-dependent apoptosis of neurons in the mushroom bodies (MB) and antennal lobes (AL). We also determined the abnormal transcripts of multiple genes, including vitellogenin (Vg), immune system genes (apidaecin and catalase), and memory-associated genes (pka, creb, Nmdar1, Dop2, Oa1, Oa-2R, and Oa-3R). These results indicate that exposure to sublethal concentrations of thiacloprid cause abnormal expression of memory-related genes and apoptosis of brain cells in the AL and MB, which may contribute to the memory disorder induced by thiacloprid exposure.

RESUMO

Honey bees have significant ecological and economic value as important pollinators, but they are continuously exposed to various environmental stressors, including insecticides, which can impair their health and cause colony decline. (1) Background: Cognitive abilities are vital for the functional maintenance of honey bees; however, it remains unknown if chronic, low-dose exposure to thiacloprid during the larval stage impairs the cognitive abilities of emerged adult honey bees. (2) Methods: To explore this question, honey bee larvae were fed 0, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/L thiacloprid during their developmental phase. Then, the cognitive (i.e., olfactory learning and memory) abilities of adult honey bees were quantified to assess the delayed impacts of early-stage thiacloprid exposure on adult honey bee cognition. Neural apoptosis and transcriptomic level were also evaluated to explore the neurological mechanisms underlying these effects. (3) Results: Our results revealed that chronic larval exposure to sublethal thiacloprid impaired the learning and memory abilities of adult honey bees by inducing neuronal apoptosis and transcriptomic alterations. (4) Conclusions: We highlighted a previously unknown impairment caused by thiacloprid in honey bees.

RESUMO

Li+ intercalates into a pure face-centered-cubic (fcc) C60 structure instead of being adsorbed on a single C60 molecule. This hinders the excess storage of Li ions in Li-ion batteries, thereby limiting their applications. However, the associated electrochemical processes and mechanisms have not been investigated owing to the low electrochemical reactivity and poor crystallinity of the C60 powder. Herein, a facile method for synthesizing pure fcc C60 nanoparticles with uniform morphology and superior electrochemical performance in both half- and full-cells is demonstrated using a 1 m LiPF6 solution in ethylene carbonate/diethyl carbonate (1:1 vol%) with 10% fluoroethylene carbonate. The specific capacity of the C60 nanoparticles during the second discharge reaches ≈750 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 , approximately twice that of graphite. Moreover, by applying in situ X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and first-principles calculations, an abnormally high Li storage in a crystalline C60 structure is proposed based on the vacant sites among the C60 molecules, Li clusters at different sites, and structural changes during the discharge/charge process. The fcc of C60 transforms tetragonal via orthorhombic Lix C60 and back to the cubic phase during discharge. The presented results will facilitate the development of novel fullerene-based anode materials for Li-ion batteries.
