RESUMO

We successfully control the interaction dynamics between optical parametric oscillation (OPO) and stimulated Raman scattering, leading to the generation of distinct frequency comb states in a microresonator. Through Raman-scattered photons, a Raman comb with a sech2 envelope is demonstrated having a broad RF beat note linewidth of several hundred kHz. Moreover, under a specific coupling regime, we successfully generate self-locked Raman single-solitons which is confirmed by a narrow RF beat note of 25 Hz. Remarkably, this spontaneous Raman soliton is deterministically generated through adiabatic pump frequency detuning without the requirement of external locking mechanisms. Additionally, we identify a frequency comb with an unconventional envelope that can be fitted with a Lorentzian × sech2 function, generated via an anti-Stokes process with respect to the Raman comb.

Transporting cold atoms between interconnected vacuum chambers is an important technique for increasing the versatility of cold atom setups, particularly for those that couple atoms to photonic devices. In this report, we introduce a method where we are able to image the atoms at all points during transport via moving optical dipole trap. Cooled 87Rb atoms are transported ∼50 cm into an auxiliary vacuum chamber while being monitored with a moving-frame imaging system for which in-situ characterization of the atom transport is demonstrated. Precise positioning of the atoms near photonic devices is also tested across several tapered fibers showing an axial positioning resolution of ∼450 µm.

Warming is known to reduce soil carbon (C) stocks by promoting microbial respiration, which is associated with the decomposition of microbial residue carbon (MRC). However, the relative contribution of MRC to soil organic carbon (SOC) across temperature gradients is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the contribution of MRC to SOC along two independent elevation gradients of our model system (i.e., the Tibetan Plateau and Shennongjia Mountain in China). Our results showed that local temperature increases were negatively correlated with MRC and SOC. Further analyses revealed that rising temperature reduced SOC via decreasing MRC, which helps to explain future reductions in SOC under climate warming. Our findings demonstrate that climate warming has the potential to reduce C sequestration by increasing the decomposition of MRC, exacerbating the positive feedback between rising temperature and CO2 efflux. Our study also considered the influence of multiple environmental factors such as soil pH and moisture, which were more important in controlling SOC than microbial traits such as microbial life-style strategies and metabolic efficiency. Together, our work suggests an important mechanism underlying long-term soil C sequestration, which has important implications for the microbial-mediated C process in the face of global climate change.

RESUMO

We present new models utilizing QCD-like dark sectors to resolve small-scale structure problems. These models of resonant self-interacting dark matter in a dark sector with QCD are based on analogies to the meson spectra in standard model QCD. We introduce a simple model that realizes resonant self-interaction (analogous to the ϕ-K-K system) and thermal freeze-out, in which dark mesons are made of two light quarks. We also consider asymmetric dark matter composed of heavy and light dark quarks to realize a resonant self-interaction (analogous to the ϒ(4S)-B-B system) and discuss the experimental probes of both setups. Finally, we comment on the possible resonant self-interactions already built into SIMP and ELDER mechanisms while using lattice results to determine feasibility.

As a unique medical resource in China, Chinese herbal medicine plays a key role in the prevention and treatment of human diseases. With the gradual expansion of applications, the quality of Chinese herbal medicine has become the focus of attention. The quality of Chinese herbal medicines depends largely on their source authenticity. Tracing the origin of Chinese herbal medicines plays an important role in ensuring their quality and efficacy and reducing the mixing and adulteration of Chinese herbal medicines from different regions. Stable isotope technology, as a key technology for origin tracing of agricultural products and food, has been used in the research of Chinese herbal medicines from multiple sources and origins in recent years. This new technological means contributes to standardizing the origin of Chinese herbal medicines and controlling their quality from the source. Apart from introducing the basic principles of stable isotope technology and the characteristics of common stable isotopes, this study reviewed the application status of light and heavy stable isotopes in the origin tracing of Chinese herbal medicines and their correlation with ecological factors, and forecasted the application prospect of this technology in the authentication of Chinese herbal medicines, aiming to provide reference for the geographical origin tracing of Chinese herbal medicines and promote the sustainable development of traditional Chinese medicine.

In order to evaluate the composition and distribution characteristics of inorganic elements in Laminaria japonica, this study employed inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) to detect the inorganic elements and used high performance liquid chromatography tandem ICP-MS(HPLC-ICP-MS) to determine the content of different arsenic species in L. japonica from diffe-rent origins. Micro X-ray fluorescence(Micro-XRF) was used to determine micro-area distribution of inorganic elements in L. japonica. The results showed that the average content of Mn, Fe, Sr, and Al was high, and that of As and Cr exceeded the limits of the national food safety standard. According to the results of HPLC-ICP-MS, arsenobetaine(AsB) was the main species of As contained in L. japonica. The more toxic inorganic arsenic accounts for a small proportion, whereas its content was 1-4 times of the limit in the national food safety standard. The results of Micro-XRF showed that As, Pb, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Ni were mainly distributed on the surface of L. japonica. Among them, As and Pb had a clear tendency to diffuse from the surface to the inside. The results of the study can provide a basis for the processing as well as the medicinal and edible safety evaluation of L. japonica.

In this study, 280 batches of Zingiberis Rhizoma samples from nine producing areas were analyzed to obtain infrared spectral information based on near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS). Pluralistic chemometrics such as principal component analysis(PCA), partial least squares-discriminant analysis(PLS-DA), orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA), K-nearest neighbors(KNN), support vector machine(SVM), random forest(RF), artificial neural network(ANN), and gradient boosting(GB) were applied for tracing of origins. The results showed that the discriminative accuracy of the spectral preprocessing by standard normal variate transformation coupled with the first derivative was 93.9%, which could be used for the construction of the discrimination model. PCA and PLS-DA score plots showed that samples from Shandong, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou could be effectively distinguished, but the remaining samples were partially overlapped. As revealed by the analysis results by machine learning algorithms, the AUC values of KNN, SVM, RF, ANN, and GB algorithms were 0.96, 0.99, 0.99, 0.99, and 0.98, respectively, with overall prediction accuracies of 83.3%, 89.3%, 90.5%, 91.7%, and 89.3%. It indicated that the developed model was reliable and the machine learning algorithm combined with NIRS for origin identification was sufficiently feasible. OPLS-DA showed that Zingiberis Rhizoma from Sichuan(genuine producing areas) could be significantly distinguished from other regions, with good discriminative accuracy, suggesting that the NIRS established in this study combined with chemometrics can be used for the identification of Zingiberis Rhizoma from Sichuan. This study established a rapid and nondestructive identification and reliable data analysis method for origin identification of Zingiberis Rhizoma, which is expected to provide a new idea for the origin tracing of Chinese medicinal materials.

We study hidden-sector particles at past (CERN-Hamburg-Amsterdam-Rome-Moscow Collaboration and NuCal), present (NA62, SeaQuest, and DarkQuest), and future (LongQuest) experiments at the high-energy intensity frontier. We focus on exploring the minimal vector portal and the next-to-minimal models in which the productions and decays are decoupled. These next-to-minimal models have mostly been devised to explain experimental anomalies while avoiding existing constraints. We demonstrate that proton fixed-target experiments provide one of the most powerful probes for the MeV to few GeV mass range of these models, using inelastic dark matter (iDM) as an example. We consider an iDM model with a small mass splitting that yields the observed dark matter relic abundance, and a scenario with a sizable mass splitting that can also explain the muon g-2 anomaly. We set strong limits based on the CERN-Hamburg-Amsterdam-Rome-Moscow Collaboration and NuCal experiments, which come close to excluding iDM as a full-abundance thermal dark matter candidate in the MeV to GeV mass range. We also make projections based on NA62, SeaQuest, and DarkQuest and update the constraints of the minimal dark photon parameter space. We find that NuCal sets the only existing constraint in ε∼10^{-8}-10^{-4} regime, reaching ∼800 MeV in dark photon mass due to the resonant enhancement of proton bremsstrahlung production. These studies also motivate LongQuest, a three-stage retooling of the SeaQuest experiment with short (≲5 m), medium (∼5 m), and long (≳35 m) baseline tracking stations and detectors as a multipurpose machine to explore new physics.

An experimental method is developed for robust frequency stabilization using a high-finesse cavity when the laser exhibits large intermittent frequency jumps. This is accomplished by applying an additional slow feedback signal from Doppler-free fluorescence spectroscopy in an atomic beam with increased frequency locking range. As a result, a stable and narrow-linewidth 556 nm laser maintains the frequency lock status for more than a week and contributes to more accurate evaluation of the Yb optical lattice clock. In addition, the reference optical cavity is supported at vibration-insensitive points without any vibration isolation table, making the laser setup more simple and compact.

RESUMO

We set constraints and future sensitivity projections on millicharged particles (MCPs) based on electron scattering data in numerous neutrino experiments, starting with MiniBooNE and the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND). Both experiments are found to provide new (and leading) constraints in certain MCP mass windows: 5-35 MeV for LSND and 100-180 MeV for MiniBooNE. Furthermore, we provide projections for the ongoing Fermilab SBN program, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), and the proposed Search for Hidden Particles (SHIP) experiment. In the SBN program, SBND and MicroBooNE have the capacity to provide the leading bounds in the 100-300 MeV mass regime. DUNE and SHIP are capable of probing parameter space for MCP masses in the range of 5 MeV-5 GeV that is significantly beyond the reach of existing bounds, including those from collider searches and, in the case of DUNE, the SLAC mQ experiment.

Heavy neutrinos with additional interactions have recently been proposed as an explanation to the MiniBooNE excess. These scenarios often rely on marginally boosted particles to explain the excess angular spectrum, thus predicting large rates at higher-energy neutrino-electron scattering experiments. We place new constraints on this class of models based on neutrino-electron scattering sideband measurements performed at MINERνA and CHARM-II. A simultaneous explanation of the angular and energy distributions of the MiniBooNE excess in terms of heavy neutrinos with light mediators is severely constrained by our analysis. In general, high-energy neutrino-electron scattering experiments provide strong constraints on explanations of the MiniBooNE observation involving light mediators.

GP-1 is a novel glycoprotein produced by Streptomyces kanasenisi ZX01 that was isolated from soil near Kanas Lake with significant bioactivity against tobacco mosaic virus. However, extremely low fermentation production has largely hindered further research and market applications on glycoprotein GP-1. In this study, response surface methodology was used to optimize fermentation conditions in a shake flask for higher glycoprotein GP-1 production. When the optimized fermentation conditions were inoculum volume of 6%, initial pH of 6.5, and rotating speed of 150 rpm, glycoprotein GP-1 production could reach 0.9253 mg/L, which was increased by 52.14% compared to the original conditions. In addition, scale-up fermentation was conducted in a 5-L bioreactor to preliminarily explore the feasibility for mass production of glycoprotein GP-1 in a large fermentor, obtaining GP-1 production of 2.54 mg/L under the same conditions, which was 2.75 times higher than the production obtained from a shake flask of 0.9253 mg/L. This work will be helpful to improve GP-1 production on a large scale and lay the foundations for developing it as a novel agent against plant virus.

The effects of temperature, agitation and aeration on glycoprotein GP-1 production by Streptomyces kanasenisi ZX01 in bench-scale fermentors were systematically investigated. The maximum final GP-1 production was achieved at an agitation speed of 200 rpm, aeration rate of 2.0 vvm and temperature of 30 °C. By using a dynamic gassing out method, the effects of agitation and aeration on volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (kLa) were also studied. The values of volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient in the logarithmic phase increased with increase of agitation speed (from 14.53 to 32.82 h-1) and aeration rate (from 13.21 to 22.43 h-1). In addition, a successful scale-up from bench-scale to pilot-scale was performed based on volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient, resulting in final GP-1 production of 3.92, 4.03, 3.82 and 4.20 mg/L in 5 L, 15 L, 70 L and 500 L fermentors, respectively. These results indicated that constant volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient was appropriate for the scale-up of batch fermentation of glycoprotein GP-1 by Streptomyces kanasenisi ZX01, and this scale-up strategy successfully achieved 100-fold scale-up from bench-scale to pilot-scale fermentor.

We present a novel dark matter candidate, an elastically decoupling relic, which is a cold thermal relic whose present abundance is determined by the cross section of its elastic scattering on standard model particles. The dark matter candidate is predicted to have a mass ranging from a few to a few hundred MeV, and an elastic scattering cross section with electrons, photons and/or neutrinos in the 10^{-3}-1 fb range.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has long been a worldwide health care problem with a persistently increasing incidence. Although its clinical features have been well described, its etiology and pathogenesis remain unclear. IL-16 is a chemoattractant cytokine with various effects on cellular activities and diseases. However, the involvement of IL-16 in IBD remains poorly understood. In this study, to our knowledge we report for the first time the mechanism by which IL-16 induces intestinal inflammation by upregulating the expression of oligopeptide transporter member 1 (PepT1) in a Tetraodon nigroviridis fish model. The dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis model in this species revealed that IL-16 levels significantly increase accompanied by elevations in PepT1 in the colon. Moreover, the signs of colitis were dramatically attenuated by IL-16 depletion using anti-IL-16 Abs. In vivo IL-16 administration induced remarkable intestinal inflammation with typical ulcerative colitis-like features, including histologic damage, inflammatory cell infiltration, increased myeloperoxidase activity, and proinflammatory cytokines expression, which corresponded with significant PepT1 upregulation in the colon. The IL-16-induced PepT1 expression and its upregulated fMLF transport were also demonstrated in vitro. To our knowledge, our study provides the first evidence of the connection between IL-16 and PepT1, which provides new insights into the molecular mechanism underlying IBD development. Additionally, this study suggests that fish species are an attractive model for studying IBD. By providing a better understanding of IL-16 biology from fish to mammals, this study should aid the development of IL-16-based therapies for IBD.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is considered the most prevalent synchronous malignancy in patients with gastric cancer. This large retrospective study aims to clarify correlations between gastric histopathology stages and risks of specific colorectal neoplasms, to optimize screening and reduce preventable CRC. Methods: Clinical data of 36,708 patients undergoing gastroscopy and colonoscopy from 2005-2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Correlations between gastric and colorectal histopathology were assessed by multivariate analysis. Outcomes of interest included non-adenomatous polyps (NAP), conventional adenomas (CAs), serrated polyps (SPs), and CRC. Statistical analysis used R version 4.0.4. Results: Older age (≥50 years) and Helicobacter pylori infection (HPI) were associated with increased risks of conventional adenomas (CAs), serrated polyps (SPs), non-adenomatous polyps (NAP), and colorectal cancer (CRC). Moderate to severe intestinal metaplasia specifically increased risks of NAP and CAs by 1.17-fold (95% CI 1.05-1.3) and 1.19-fold (95% CI 1.09-1.31), respectively. For CRC risk, low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia increased risk by 1.41-fold (95% CI 1.08-1.84), while high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (OR 3.76, 95% CI 2.25-6.29) and gastric cancer (OR 4.81, 95% CI 3.25-7.09) showed strong associations. More advanced gastric pathology was correlated with progressively higher risks of CRC. Conclusion: Precancerous gastric conditions are associated with increased colorectal neoplasm risk. Our findings can inform screening guidelines to target high-risk subgroups, advancing colorectal cancer prevention and reducing disease burden.

From ultracold atoms to quantum chromodynamics, reliable ab initio studies of strongly interacting fermions require numerical methods, typically in some form of quantum Monte Carlo calculation. Unfortunately, (non)relativistic systems at finite density (spin polarization) generally have a sign problem, such that those ab initio calculations are impractical. It is well-known, however, that in the relativistic case imaginary chemical potentials solve this problem, assuming the data can be analytically continued to the real axis. Is this feasible for nonrelativistic systems? Are the interesting features of the phase diagram accessible in this manner? By introducing complex chemical potentials, for real total particle number and imaginary polarization, the sign problem is avoided in the nonrelativistic case. To give a first answer to the above questions, we perform a mean-field study of the finite-temperature phase diagram of spin-1/2 fermions with imaginary polarization.

We developed a shutter driven by a solenoid to switch on/off the atomic beam of optical lattice clocks developed at KRISS [C. Y. Park et al., Metrologia 50, 119 (2013), S. Lee et al., New J. Phys. 18, 033030 (2016), H. Kim et al., Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 56, 050302 (2017), and H. Kim et al., Metrologia 58, 055007 (2021)]. The shutter design was focused on long lifetime and compatibility with an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment. Thus, the solenoid was designed to be easily installed and removed from the air-side of a CF flange of the shutter. The flag in the vacuum-side moves only with the simple spring action of a sheet of a metal plate without any frictional movement of mechanical parts. All parts in the vacuum-side were made of metals (stainless steel and pure iron) to be baked over the temperature of 200 °C for UHV. The flag head of the shutter displaces up to 10 mm (5 mm) with a response time of 50 (30 ms) and 80 ms (10 ms) for the opening-action and the closing-action, respectively. The lifetime was tested up to 6 × 106 cycles with no performance degradation. We expect the actual lifetime to be much longer than this by virtue of its friction-free design.

Coxsackievirus A5 (CV-A5) is a re-emerging enterovirus that causes hand, foot, and mouth disease in children under five years of age. CV-A5-M14-611 is a mouse-adapted strain that can infect orally and lead to the death of 14-day-old mice. Here, recombinants based on CV-A5-M14-611 were constructed carrying three reporter genes in different lengths. Smaller fluorescent marker proteins, light, oxygen, voltage sensing (iLOV), and nano luciferase (Nluc) were proven to be able to express efficiently in vitro. However, the recombinant with the largest insertion of the red fluorescence protein gene (DsRed) was not rescued. The construction strategy of reporter viruses was to insert the foreign genes between the C-terminus of VP1 and the N-terminus of 2A genes and to add a 2A protease cleavage domain at both ends of the insertions. The iLOV-tagged or Nluc-tagged recombinants, CV-A5-iLOV or CV-A5-Nluc, exhibited a high capacity for viral replication, genetic stability in cells and pathogenicity in mice. They were used to establish a rapid, inexpensive and convenient neutralizing antibody assay and greatly facilitated virus neutralizing antibody titration. Living imaging was performed on mice with CV-A5-Nluc, which exhibited specific bioluminescence in virus-disseminated organs, while fluorescence induced by CV-A5-iLOV was weakly detected. The reporter-gene-tagged CV-A5 can be used to study the infection and mechanisms of CV-A5 pathogenicity in a mouse model. They can also be used to establish rapid and sensitive assays for detecting neutralizing antibodies.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is a high-value food and herb worldwide. The quality of ginger is often related to its production regions. In this study, stable isotopes, multiple elements, and metabolites were investigated together to realize ginger origin traceability. Chemometrics showed that ginger samples could be preliminarily separated, and 4 isotopes (δ13C, δ2H, δ18O, and δ34S), 12 mineral elements (Rb, Mn, V, Na, Sm, K, Ga, Cd, Al, Ti, Mg, and Li), 1 bioelement (%C), and 143 metabolites were the most important variables for discrimination. Furthermore, three algorithms were introduced, and the fused dataset based on VIP features led to the highest accuracies for origin classification, with predictive rates of 98% for K-nearest neighbor and 100% for support vector machine and random forest. The results demonstrated that isotopic, elemental, and metabolic fingerprints were useful indicators for the geographical origins of Chinese ginger.
