IMPORTANCE: Early detection and timely diagnosis of asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis significantly assist in the prevention of ischemic stroke for them. OBJECTIVE: This observational study aimed to develop and validate a novel prediction model to assist in the early diagnosis of carotid atherosclerosis based on new characteristic variables screened by retinal microvascular intelligence analysis. MAIN OUTCOME(S) AND METHOD (S): The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) combined with 10-fold cross-validation were screened for characteristic variables, and nomograms were plotted to demonstrate the prediction model. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC), calibration plots and brier score (BS), and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the risk model's discrimination, calibration, and clinical applicability. RESULTS: Age, gender, diabetes mellitus (DM), drinking history, vascular branching angle, mean vascular diameter within 0.5-1.0 papillary diameter (PD), curvature tortuosity arteriole in the inferior region of the optic disc, and vascular density in the nasal region of the optic disc were identified as characteristic variables for carotid atherosclerosis with retinal microvascular intelligence analysis. The predictive nomogram model presented good discrimination with AUCs of 0.790 (0.774-0.806), and the calibration curve displayed high consistency between predicted and actual probability. The DCA demonstrated that this nomogram model led to net benefits in a threshold probability range of 20 %-94 % and could be adapted for clinical decision-making. The results of the 100-bootstrap resampling strategy for internal validation also show that the risk model is well discriminated with an AUC of 0.789 and excellent calibration. External validation showed good discrimination with AUCs of 0.703 (0.627 - 0.779) and good calibration, the risk threshold is 10 %-92 % in terms of DCA. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The novel prediction model based on retinal microvascular intelligence analysis constructed in this study could be effective prognoses for predicting the risk of asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis in a Chinese screening population.

Cyclopentadiene (CPD) and methylcyclopentadiene (MCPD) are important intermediates that have been widely used in the production of high-energy-density rocket fuels, polymers and valuable chemicals. Currently, CPD and MCPD are produced from fossil energies at very low yields, which greatly limits their application. As a solution to this problem, we disclose an alternative two-step bio-route to access CPD and MCPD using xylose or extracted hemicellulose as the feedstock. In the first step, cyclopentanone (CPO) was directly produced by the selective hydrogenolysis of xylose or extracted hemicellulose over a commercial Ru/C catalyst in an acid-free toluene/NaCl aqueous solution biphasic system. In the second step, CPO was selectively converted to CPD by a cascade hydrodeoxygenation/dehydrogenation reaction over zinc molybdate catalysts. When methanol was introduced with CPO and hydrogen, MCPD was selectively obtained by a cascade dehydrogenation/aldol condensation/selective hydrodeoxygenation reaction over zinc molybdate catalysts.

Sarcopenia prevalence and its risk factors in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) vary partly due to definition criteria. This systematic review aimed to identify the prevalence and risk factors of sarcopenia in COPD patients. This review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022310750). Nine electronic databases were searched from inception to September 1st, 2022, and studies related to sarcopenia and COPD were identified. Study quality was assessed using a validated scale matched to study designs, and a meta-analysis was performed to evaluate sarcopenia prevalence. COPD patients with sarcopenia were compared to those without sarcopenia for BMI, smoking, and mMRC. The current meta-analysis included 15 studies, with a total of 7,583 patients. The overall sarcopenia prevalence was 29% [95% CI: 22%-37%], and the OR of sarcopenia in COPD patients was 1.51 (95% CI: 1.19-1.92). The meta-analysis and systematic review showed that mMRC (OR = 2.02, P = 0.04) and age (OR = 1.15, P = 0.004) were significant risk factors for sarcopenia in COPD patients. In contrast, no significant relationship was observed between sarcopenia and smoking and BMI. Nursing researchers should pay more attention to the symptomatic management of COPD and encourage patients to participate in daily activities in the early stages of the disease.

There is mounting evidence implicating the potential neurotoxic effects of PM2.5 during brain development, as it has been observed to traverse both the placental barrier and the fetal blood-brain barrier. However, the current utilization of 2D cell culture and animal models falls short in providing an accurate representation of human brain development. Consequently, the precise mechanisms underlying PM2.5-induced developmental neurotoxicity in humans remain obscure. To address this research gap, we constructed three-dimensional (3D) cortical organoids that faithfully recapitulate the initial stages of human cerebral cortex development. Our goal is to investigate the mechanisms of PM2.5-induced neurotoxicity using 3D brain organoids that express cortical layer proteins. Our findings demonstrate that exposure to PM2.5 concentrations of 5 µg/mL and 50 µg/mL induces neuronal apoptosis and disrupts normal neural differentiation, thereby suggesting a detrimental impact on neurodevelopment. Furthermore, transcriptomic analysis revealed PM2.5 exposure induced aberrations in mitochondrial complex I functionality, which is reminiscent of Parkinson's syndrome, potentially mediated by misguided axon guidance and compromised synaptic maintenance. This study is a pioneering assessment of the neurotoxicity of PM2.5 pollution on human brain tissues based on 3D cortical organoids, and the results are of great significance in guiding the formulation of the next air pollution prevention and control policies in China to achieve the sustainable improvement of air quality and to formulate pollution abatement strategies that can maximize the benefits to public health.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates the association between passive smoking, specifically secondhand smoke (SHS) and thirdhand smoke (THS) exposure, and sleep quality in a hypertensive population. METHODS: We enrolled 1427 eligible hypertensive patients from a 2022 national cross-sectional survey in China. Data on tobacco smoke exposure and sleep were collected via questionnaires. Multiple logistic regression and linear regression were employed to assess the relationship between passive smoking and sleep quality characteristics, as well as the correlation between passive smoking exposure characteristics and sleep quality. RESULTS: Among 589 hypertensive patients with no tobacco smoke exposure, 679 exposed to SHS, and 159 exposed to THS, SHS exposure was associated with a higher risk of poor sleep quality, even after adjusting for potential confounding factors (ß=0.10; 95% CI: 0.32-0.95). No significant relationship was observed between THS exposure and sleep quality. SHS exposure was associated with various sleep quality characteristics, including shorter sleep duration (AOR=1.71; 95% CI: 1.06-2.76) and increased frequency of 1-2 sleep disturbances per week (AOR=1.68; 95% CI: 1.25-2.26). Individuals exposed to SHS were more likely to experience poorer subjective sleep quality (AOR=1.53; 95% CI: 1.07-2.21) and have sleep efficiency <65% (AOR=1.82; 95% CI: 1.22-2.71). Exposure to passive smoking at home, in the community, in public places, exposure to passive smoking with family and friends, and increased frequency of exposure, were all associated with a higher risk of poor sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that SHS exposure in hypertensive populations is associated with poor sleep quality and various characteristics of sleep quality. No significant association was found between THS exposure and sleep quality. These findings underscore the need to enhance tobacco control efforts in China, particularly for individuals with chronic diseases, to safeguard public health.

Indan and tetralin are widely used as fuel additives and the intermediates in the manufacture of thermal-stable jet fuel, many chemicals, medicines, and shockproof agents for rubber industry. Herein, we disclose a two-step route to selectively produce 5-methyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene (abbreviated as methylindan) and tetralin with xylose or the hemicelluloses from agricultural or forestry waste. Firstly, cyclopentanone (CPO) was selectively formed with ~60% carbon yield by the direct hydrogenolysis of xylose or hemicelluloses on a non-noble bimetallic Cu-La/SBA-15 catalyst. Subsequently, methylindan and tetralin were selectively produced with CPO via a cascade self-aldol condensation/rearrangement/aromatization reaction catalyzed by a commercial H-ZSM-5 zeolite. When we used cyclohexanone (another lignocellulosic cycloketone) in the second step, the main product switched to dimethyltetralin. This work gives insights into the selective production of bicyclic aromatics with lignocellulose.

Introduction: Theoretical models of health behavior are important guides for disease prevention and detection, treatment and rehabilitation, and promotion and maintenance of physical and mental health, but there are no intervention studies related to differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) that use theoretical models of health as a guide. In this study, we used a microblogging platform as an intervention vehicle and mobile patient-doctor interactive health education as a means of intervention, with the aim of improving the health behaviors of DTC patients as well as the corresponding clinical outcomes. Methods: This research project is a quantitative methodological study, and the trial will be a single-blind, single-center randomized controlled trial conducted at the Fourth Hospital of Harbin Medical University in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. The study subjects are patients over 18 years of age with differentiated thyroid cancer who were given radioactive iodine-131 therapy as well as endocrine therapy after radical surgery for thyroid cancer. The intervention group will receive MTM-mhealth, and the realization of health education will rely on the smart terminal WeChat platform. Routine discharge education will be given to the control group at discharge. The primary outcome will be change in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from baseline and at 3 and 6 months of follow-up, and secondary outcomes will include change in self-management behavior, social cognitive and psychological, and metabolic control. Discussion: This study will explore a feasible mHealth intervention program applied to a population of DTC patients using the Multi-theory model of health behavior change (MTM) as a guide, with the aim of evaluating the MTM-based intervention program for clinical outcome improvement in DTC patients, as well as determining the effectiveness of the MTM-based intervention program in improving self-management skills in DTC patients. The results of this study will indicate the feasibility as well as the effectiveness of the application of health theoretical modeling combined with mHealth applications in disease prognostic health management models, and provide policy recommendations and technological translations for the development of mobility-based health management applications in the field of health management.

Unlike chemosynthetic drugs designed for specific molecular and disease targets, active small-molecule natural products typically have a wide range of bioactivities and multiple targets, necessitating extensive screening and development. To address this issue, we propose a strategy for the direct in situ microdynamic examination of potential drug candidates to rapidly identify their effects and mechanisms of action. As a proof-of-concept, we investigated the behavior of mussel oligosaccharide (MOS-1) by tracking the subcellular dynamics of fluorescently labeled MOS-1 in cultured cells. We recorded the entire dynamic process of the localization of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-MOS-1 to the lysosomes and visualized the distribution of the drug within the cell. Remarkably, lysosomes containing FITC-MOS-1 actively recruited lipid droplets, leading to fusion events and increased cellular lipid consumption. These drug behaviors confirmed MOS-1 is a candidate for the treatment of lipid-related diseases. Furthermore, in a high-fat HepG2 cell model and in high-fat diet-fed apolipoprotein E (ApoE) -/- mice, MOS-1 significantly promoted triglyceride degradation, reduced lipid droplet accumulation, lowered serum triglyceride levels, and mitigated liver damage and steatosis. Overall, our work supports the prioritization of in situ visual monitoring of drug location and distribution in subcellular compartments during the drug development phase, as this methodology contributes to the rapid identification of drug indications. Collectively, this methodology is significant for the screening and development of selective small-molecule drugs, and is expected to expedite the identification of candidate molecules with medicinal effects.

Objective: Although physical exercise has been shown to boost physical, psychological, and psychiatric conditions in older adults, there is a relative lack of research on the mechanisms involved in this process for older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We thus evaluated whether sleep quality and depression mediated the relationship between physical exercise and cognitive impairment in older adults with T2DM by focusing on the exercise-physiology-psychology and psychiatry connection. Methods: Self-reported data were collected from 2646 older adults with T2DM in Weifang, Shandong, China. Regression and bootstrap analyses were conducted to explore the chain mediator model including physical exercise, cognitive impairment, sleep quality, and depression. Results: Engaging in physical exercise (coefficient = -0.6858, p < 0.001), high levels of sleep quality (coefficient = -0.3397, p = 0.015), and low levels of depression (coefficient = 0.3866, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a low level of cognitive impairment. Sleep quality and depression mediated the chain effect between physical exercise and cognitive impairment (total effect = -1.0732, 95% CI [-1.3652, -0.7862]; direct effect = -0.6858, 95% CI [-0.9702, -0.3974]; indirect effect = -0.3875, 95% CI [-0.5369, -0.2521]). Conclusion: Physical exercise may improve sleep quality in older adults with T2DM, alleviating depression and delaying the development of cognitive impairment. Physical exercise can enhance patients' ability to resist depression and cognitive impairment, and creating comfortable sleep environments can also reinforce the effects of this process. These findings have important implications for promoting healthy aging in older adults with T2DM.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterised mainly by exertional dyspnoea, which may lead to activity reduction. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is considered capable of mitigating these impairments. However, access to PR is limited to specialised centres, especially during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Moreover, low-cost home rehabilitation programmes have non-individualised prescriptions, which might lead to inconsistent clinical effects in patients with COPD. Therefore, it is important to develop new, low-cost protocols involving individualised prescriptions and staff supervision. Methods: This is a descriptive protocol for a randomised controlled study at the Grade III A Hospital in Tianjin. The sample size was calculated according to a described formula. Fifty-six participants will be selected and randomly allocated into two groups: (I) control (traditional PR training, medication, and nursing interventions); and (II) intervention [PR training in the hospital and at home by the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation System Management Platform (CSM)]. The protocol will be performed twice a week for 8 consecutive weeks in the outpatient clinic, and the training will be performed by the application of the CSM system in the final 6 months of the trial. The study will assess lung function and physical fitness and analyse the scores of the modified Medical Research Council Dyspnoea Scale, the COPD assessment test, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health, and the 6-minute walk test before and after the training protocol. Comparison of differences will be performed using repeated measures analysis of variance, a linear mixed effects analysis, or a non-parametric test, which will include only participants who completed all outcome measures and followed the intervention protocol. The study results will be disseminated through presentations at scientific conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Discussion: The new, low-cost supervised rehabilitation programmes are expected to present positive results, making PR programmes more accessible and effective for patients with COPD. Modern cellular biology faces several major obstacles, such as the determination of the concentration of active sites corresponding to chemical substances. In recent years, the popular small-molecule fluorescent probes have completely changed the understanding of cellular biology through their high sensitivity toward specific substances in various organisms. Mitochondria and lysosomes are significant organelles in various organisms, and their interaction is closely related to the development of various diseases. The investigation of their structure and function has gathered tremendous attention from biologists. The advanced nanoscopic technologies have replaced the diffraction-limited conventional imaging techniques and have been developed to explore the unknown aspects of mitochondria and lysosomes with a sub-diffraction resolution. Recent progress in this field has yielded several excellent mitochondria- and lysosome-targeted fluorescent probes, some of which have demonstrated significant biological applications. Herein, we review studies that have been carried out to date and suggest future research directions that will harness the considerable potential of mitochondria- and lysosome-targeted fluorescent probes.

E-commerce poverty alleviation has become a new wisdom in China's rural poverty alleviation, but there are a few empirical researches on e-commerce poverty alleviation based on farmer cooperatives. Taking four typical poverty counties in Zhejiang Province as an example, based on the actor network theory (ANT), this paper defines the participants and their obligatory passage point (OPP) from the e-commerce poverty alleviation actor network (EPAAN), combs the roles and interest demands of various stakeholders, and constructs the EPAAN model based on farmer cooperatives according to the translation process. We found that the EPAAN is a heterogeneous network by constantly updating, which consists of human actors with cooperatives as the main body and non-human actors. Moreover, our study illustrates that the formation and operation mechanism of cooperative e-commerce poverty alleviation network alliance under the background of targeted poverty alleviation can be well analyzed with the help of actor network theory. This study contributes to provide a feasible Chinese plan for the cause of poverty eradication all over the world, and provides a great reference value for global poverty governance.

Background: Single-sex children have been regarded as one of the best subjects to understand the abnormal development patterns of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). However, the functional connectivity (FC) behind their symptoms is still unknown. Methods: Based on FC analysis, the acquired resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data sets, including 86 boys with ASD and 54 normal controls (NC), were used to detect the neural synchronous activity between brain regions. Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between the abnormal FC value and clinical features. Results: Individuals with ASD showed enhanced FC between the right calcarine and the right lingual gyrus (LG). The right medial orbital frontal cortex also showed increased FC with bilateral inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) [two-tailed, voxel-level p < 0.001, gaussian random field (GRF) correction, cluster-level p < 0.05]. We did not find a correlation between the abnormal FC value and clinical scales. Conclusion: Our study reveals a possible relationship between atypical visual attention and poor learning ability in subjects with ASD, and delayed social language development may be a secondary symptom to ASD.

A novel formal (4 + 1) annulation between N-(o-chloromethyl)aryl amides and 3-chlorooxindoles through in situ generated aza-ortho-QMs with 3-chlorooxindoles is reported for the synthesis of a series of 2,3'-spirobi (indolin)-2'-ones in high yields. Under structured illumination microscopy, compound 3a is found to change the mitochondrial morphology and induce mitophagy pathway, which might then trigger mitophagy in cancer cells.

Three-dimensional and dendritic rutile TiO2 nanorods were successfully fabricated on a Ti foil surface using a one-step acidic hydrothermal method. The TiO2 nanorods were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and optical contact angle testing. The results showed that the nanorods with diameters of 100â»500 nm and lengths of 100 nm to 1 µm were obtained on the Ti foil surface. The length and density of the TiO2 nanorods were perfect at the conditions of HCl concentration 0.5 mol/L, temperature 220 °C, and reaction time 12 h. The TiO2 nanorods formed parallel to the consumption of Ti and grew along the (110) direction having a tetragonal rutile crystal. The morphology of the nanorods possessed a three-dimensional structure. The contact angle of the nanorods was only 13 ± 3.1°. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic activities of the TiO2 nanorods were carried out using ultraviolet fluorescence spectrophotometry for the methyl orange detection, and the degradation was found to be about 71.00% ± 2.43%. Thus, TiO2 nanorods can be developed by a one-step acidic hydrothermal method using Ti foil simultaneously as the substrate with a TiO2 source; the TiO2 nanorods exhibited photocatalytic performance while being environment-friendly.

Controversy surrounds the role of the private sector in health service delivery, including primary care and population health services. China's recent health reforms call for non-discrimination against private providers and emphasize strengthening primary care, but formal contracting-out initiatives remain few, and the associated empirical evidence is very limited. This paper presents a case study of contracting with private providers for urban primary and preventive health services in Shandong Province, China. The case study draws on three primary sources of data: administrative records; a household survey of over 1600 community residents in Weifang and City Y; and a provider survey of over 1000 staff at community health stations (CHS) in both Weifang and City Y. We supplement the quantitative data with one-on-one, in-depth interviews with key informants, including local officials in charge of public health and government finance.We find significant differences in patient mix: Residents in the communities served by private community health stations are of lower socioeconomic status (more likely to be uninsured and to report poor health), compared to residents in communities served by a government-owned CHS. Analysis of a household survey of 1013 residents shows that they are more willing to do a routine health exam at their neighborhood CHS if they are of low socioeconomic status (as measured either by education or income). Government and private community health stations in Weifang did not statistically differ in their performance on contracted dimensions, after controlling for size and other CHS characteristics. In contrast, the comparison City Y had lower performance and a large gap between public and private providers. We discuss why these patterns arose and what policymakers and residents considered to be the main issues and concerns regarding primary care services.
