Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is prevalent worldwide and causes significant economic losses. Gut microbiota is a large microbial community and has a variety of biological functions. However, whether there is a correlation between gut microbiota and BVDV infection and what kind of relation between them have not been reported. Here, we found that gut microbiota composition changed in normal mice after infecting with BVDV, but mainly the low abundance microbe was affected. Interestingly, BVDV infection significantly reduced the diversity of gut microbiota and changed its composition in gut microbiota-dysbiosis mice. Furthermore, compared with normal mice of BVDV infection, there were more viral loads in the duodenum, jejunum, spleen, and liver of the gut microbiota-dysbiosis mice. However, feces microbiota transplantation (FMT) reversed these effects. The data above indicated that the dysbiosis of gut microbiota was a key factor in the high infection rate of BVDV. It is found that the IFN-I signal was involved by investigating the underlying mechanisms. The inhibition of the proliferation and increase in the apoptosis of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) were also observed. However, FMT treatment reversed these changes by regulating PI3K/Akt, ERK, and Caspase-9/Caspase-3 pathways. Furthermore, the involvement of butyrate in the pathogenesis of BVDV was also further confirmed. Our results showed for the first time that gut microbiota acts as a key endogenous defense mechanism against BVDV infection; moreover, targeting regulation of gut microbiota structure and abundance may serve as a new strategy to prevent and control the disease.IMPORTANCEWhether the high infection rate of BVDV is related to gut microbiota has not been reported. In addition, most studies on BVDV focus on in vitro experiments, which limits the study of its prevention and control strategy and its pathogenic mechanism. In this study, we successfully confirmed the causal relationship between gut microbiota and BVDV infection as well as the potential molecular mechanism based on a mouse model of BVDV infection and a mouse model of gut microbiota dysbiosis. Meanwhile, a mouse model which is more susceptible to BVDV provided in this study lays an important foundation for further research on prevention and control strategy of BVDV and its pathogenesis. In addition, the antiviral effect of butyrate, the metabolites of butyrate-producing bacteria, has been further revealed. Overall, our findings provide a promising prevention and control strategy to treat this infectious disease which is distributed worldwide.

Advanced portable healthcare devices with high efficiencies, small pressure drops, and high-temperature resistance are urgently desired in harsh environments with high temperatures, high humidities, and high levels of atmospheric pollution. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which serve as energy converters in a revolutionary self-powered sensor device, present a sustainable solution for meeting these requirements. In this work, we developed a porous negative triboelectric material by synthesizing ZIF-8 on the surface of a cellulose/graphene oxide aerogel, grafting it with trimethoxy(1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl)silane, and adding a negative corona treatment, and it was combined with a positive triboelectric material to create a cellulose nanofiber-based TENG self-powered filter. The devices achieved a balance between a small pressure drop (53 Pa) and high filtration efficiency (98.97%, 99.65%, and 99.93% for PM0.3, PM0.5, and PM1, respectively), demonstrating robust filtration properties at high temperatures and high humidities. Our work provides a new approach for developing self-powered wearable healthcare devices with excellent air filtration properties.

The accuracy and timeliness of the pathologic diagnosis of soft tissue tumors (STTs) critically affect treatment decision and patient prognosis. Thus, it is crucial to make a preliminary judgement on whether the tumor is benign or malignant with hematoxylin and eosin-stained images. A deep learning-based system, Soft Tissue Tumor Box (STT-BOX), is presented herein, with only hematoxylin and eosin images for malignant STT identification from benign STTs with histopathologic similarity. STT-BOX assumed gastrointestinal stromal tumor as a baseline for malignant STT evaluation, and distinguished gastrointestinal stromal tumor from leiomyoma and schwannoma with 100% area under the curve in patients from three hospitals, which achieved higher accuracy than the interpretation of experienced pathologists. Particularly, this system performed well on six common types of malignant STTs from The Cancer Genome Atlas data set, accurately highlighting the malignant mass lesion. STT-BOX was able to distinguish ovarian malignant sex-cord stromal tumors without any fine-tuning. This study included mesenchymal tumors that originated from the digestive system, bone and soft tissues, and reproductive system, where the high accuracy of migration verification may reveal the morphologic similarity of the nine types of malignant tumors. Further evaluation in a pan-STT setting would be potential and prospective, obviating the overuse of immunohistochemistry and molecular tests, and providing a practical basis for clinical treatment selection in a timely manner.

Nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) process is a promising wastewater treatment technology, but the slow microbial growth rate greatly hinders its practical application. Although high-level nitrogen removal and excellent biomass accumulation have been achieved in n-DAMO granule process, the formation mechanism of n-DAMO granules remains unresolved. To elucidate the role of functional microbes in granulation, this study attempted to cultivate granules dominated by n-DAMO microorganisms and granules coupling n-DAMO with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox). After long-term operation, dense granules were developed in the two systems where both n-DAMO archaea and n-DAMO bacteria were enriched, whereas granulation did not occur in the other system dominated by n-DAMO bacteria. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) measurement indicated the critical role of EPS production in the granulation of n-DAMO process. Metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses revealed that n-DAMO archaea and Anammox bacteria were active in EPS biosynthesis, while n-DAMO bacteria were inactive. Consequently, more EPS were produced in the systems containing n-DAMO archaea and Anammox bacteria, leading to the successful development of n-DAMO granules. Furthermore, EPS biosynthesis in n-DAMO systems is potentially regulated by acyl-homoserine lactones and c-di-GMP. These findings not only provide new insights into the mechanism of granule formation in n-DAMO systems, but also hint at potential strategies for management of the granule-based n-DAMO process.

Nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) process offers a promising solution for simultaneously achieving methane emissions reduction and efficient nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment. Although nitrogen removal at a practical rate has been achieved by n-DAMO biofilm process, the mechanisms of biofilm formation and nitrogen transformation remain to be elucidated. In this study, n-DAMO biofilms were successfully developed in the membrane aerated moving bed biofilm reactor (MAMBBR) and removed nitrate at a rate of 159 mg NO3--N L-1 d-1. The obvious increase in the content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) indicated that EPS production was important for biofilm development. n-DAMO microorganisms dominated the microbial community, and n-DAMO bacteria were the most abundant microorganisms. However, the expression of biosynthesis genes for proteins and polysaccharides encoded by n-DAMO archaea was significantly more active compared to other microorganisms, suggesting the central role of n-DAMO archaea in EPS production and biofilm formation. In addition to nitrate reduction, n-DAMO archaea were revealed to actively express dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and nitrogen fixation. The produced ammonium was putatively converted to dinitrogen gas through the joint function of n-DAMO archaea and n-DAMO bacteria. This study revealed the biofilm formation mechanism and nitrogen-transformation network in n-DAMO biofilm systems, shedding new light on promoting the application of n-DAMO process.

Cellulose-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted widespread attention due to the low cost and environmentally friendly characteristics of cellulose. However, achieving high electrical energy output from these generators still presents significant challenges. Here, cellulose is dissolved-regenerated to form a composite aerogel with high specific surface area, in which cellulose-based composites with excellent negative triboelectric properties are developed by coupling the rich 3D network structure of the regenerated cellulose aerogel, modified barium titanate, and poly(vinylidene fluoride). The TENGs assembled from the composite materials exhibit an output voltage of 1040 V and a current of 1.165 mA at an external force of 8 N and a frequency of 4 Hz, outperforming all cellulose-based negative triboelectric materials. In addition, the nanogenerators have a stable electrical energy output capacity, with no significant property degradation in 100 000 contact-separation tests. The excellent electrical output property of the composite materials enables them to harvest energy from human movement and waterdrops, demonstrating their great application prospects in wearable devices, energy harvesting devices, self-powered sensors, and other fields.

BACKGROUND: Esophagojejunostomy after minimally invasive total gastrectomy (MITG) for gastric cancer (GC) is technically challenging. Failure of the esophagojejunal anastomosis can lead to significant morbidity, leading to short- and long-term quality of life (QoL) impairment or mortality. The optimal reconstruction method following MITG remains controversial. We evaluated outcomes of minimally invasive esophagojejunostomy after laparoscopic or robotic total gastrectomies. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed MITG patients between 2015 and 2020 at two high-volume centers in China and the United States. Eligible patients were divided into groups by different reconstruction methods. We compared clinicopathologic characteristics, postoperative outcomes, including complication rates, overall survival rate (OS), disease-free survival rate (DFS), and patient-reported QoL. RESULTS: GC patients (n = 105) were divided into intracorporeal esophagojejunostomy (IEJ, n = 60) and extracorporeal esophagojejunostomy (EEJ, n = 45) groups. EEJ had higher incidence of wound infection (8.3% vs 13.3%, P = 0.044) and pneumonia (21.7% vs 40.0%, P = 0.042) than IEJ. The linear stapler (LS) group was inferior to the circular stapler (CS) group in reflux [50.0 (11.1-77.8) vs 44.4 (0.0-66.7), P = 0.041] and diarrhea [33.3 (0.0-66.7) vs 0.0 (0.0-66.7), P = 0.045] while LS was better than CS for dysphagia [22.2 (0.0-33.3) vs 11.1 (0.0-33.3), P = 0.049] and eating restrictions [33.3 (16.7-58.3) vs 41.7 (16.7-66.7), P = 0.029] at 1 year. OS and DFS did not differ significantly between LS and CS. CONCLUSIONS: IEJ anastomosis generated better results than EEJ. LS was associated with a better patient eating experience, but more diarrhea and reflux compared with CS. Clinical and patient-reported outcomes show the superiority of IEJ with the LS reconstruction method in MITG for GC.

Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidizing (n-DAMO) bacteria generally convert nitrite to dinitrogen and bypass the nitrous oxide (N2O) formation step. However, N2O is often detected in n-DAMO bacteria dominated cultures and it remains an open question as to the microbial origin of N2O in these enrichments. Using a stable nitrite consuming microbial community enriched for n-DAMO bacteria, we demonstrated that N2O production was coupled to methane oxidation and the higher initial nitrite concentrations led to increased quantities of N2O being formed. Moreover, continuous exposure of the enrichment culture to about 5 mg of N L-1 nitrite resulted in constant N2O being produced (12.5% of nitrite was reduced to N2O). Metatranscriptomic analyses revealed that nitrite reductase (nirS) and nitric oxide reductase (norZ) transcripts from n-DAMO bacteria increased in response to nitrite exposure. No other bacteria significantly expressed nor genes under these conditions, suggesting n-DAMO bacteria are responsible for N2O being produced. In a 35-day bioreactor experiment, N2O produced by the n-DAMO bacteria accumulated when nitrite was in excess; this was found to be up to 3.2% of the nitrogen that resulted from nitrite removal. Together, these results suggested that excess nitrite is an important driver of N2O production by n-DAMO bacteria. To this end, proper monitoring and control of nitrite levels in wastewater treatment plants would be effective strategies for mitigating N2O emissions to the atmosphere.

As a promising technology, the combination of nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) with Anammox offers a solution to achieve effective and sustainable wastewater treatment. However, this sustainable process faces challenges to accumulate sufficient biomass for reaching practical nitrogen removal performance. This study developed an innovative membrane aerated moving bed biofilm reactor (MAMBBR), which supported sufficient methane supply and excellent biofilm attachment, for cultivating biofilms coupling n-DAMO with Anammox. Biofilms were developed rapidly on the polyurethane foam with the supply of ammonium and nitrate, achieving the bioreactor performance of 275 g N m-3 d-1 within 102 days. After the preservation at -20 °C for 8 months, the biofilm was successfully reactivated and achieved 315 g N m-3 d-1 after 188 days. After reactivation, MAMBBR was applied to treat synthetic sidestream wastewater. Up to 99.9% of total nitrogen was removed with the bioreactor performance of 4.0 kg N m-3 d-1. Microbial community analysis and mass balance calculation demonstrated that n-DAMO microorganisms and Anammox bacteria collectively contributed to nitrogen removal in MAMBBR. The MAMBBR developed in this study provides an ideal system of integrating n-DAMO with Anammox for sustainable wastewater treatment.

Piezoelectric nanomaterials open new avenues in driving green catalysis processes (e.g., H2 evolution from water) through harvesting mechanical energy, but their catalytic efficiency is still limited. The predicted enormous piezoelectricity for 2D SnSe, together with its high charge mobility and excellent flexibility, renders it an ideal candidate for stimulating piezocatalysis redox reactions. In this work, few-layer piezoelectric SnSe nanosheets (NSs) are utilized for mechanically induced H2 evolution from water. The finite elemental method simulation demonstrates an unprecedent maximal piezoelectric potential of 44.1 V for a single SnSe NS under a pressure of 100 MPa. A record-breaking piezocurrent density of 0.3 mA cm-2 is obtained for SnSe NSs-based electrode under ultrasonic excitation (100 W, 45 kHz), which is about three orders of magnitude greater than that of reported piezocatalysts. Moreover, an exceptional H2 production rate of 948.4 µmol g-1 h-1 is achieved over the SnSe NSs without any cocatalyst, far exceeding most of the reported piezocatalysts and competitive with the current photocatalysis technology. The findings not only enrich the potential piezocatalysis materials, but also provide useful guidance toward high-efficiency mechanically driven chemical reactions such as H2 evolution from water.

OBJECTIVES: Although laparoscopic distal gastrectomy has been widely used for distal gastric cancer, the best functional reconstruction type has not yet been established. Based on previous experience, we propose a modified uncut Roux-en-Y anastomosis. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of different intracorporeal anastomoses after laparoscopic distal gastrectomy. METHODS: From April 2015 to August 2020, the data of 215 patients who underwent laparoscopic distal gastrectomy was collected. The patients were divided into 4 groups according to the digestive tract reconstruction method, Billroth-I, Billroth-II, Roux-en-Y, and the modified uncut Roux-en-Y. Clinicopathologic characteristics, surgery details, short-term outcomes, and postoperative nutritional status were analyzed. RESULTS: The operation time of Billroth-I anastomosis was significantly shorter (216.2 ± 25.8 min, P < .001) than that of other methods. There was no difference in postoperative complications and OS among the 4 reconstruction methods. The incidences of esophagitis, gastritis, and bile reflux were significantly lower in the Roux-en-Y and uncut Roux-en-Y group (P < .001) 1 year after surgery. And the postoperative albumin and PNI levels in uncut Roux-en-Y group were higher than those in other groups(P < .05). On multivariate analysis, age and reconstruction type were independently related to esophagitis, gastritis, and bile reflux. Serum albumin and the prognostic nutritional index were significantly higher in the uncut Roux-en-Y group than other groups (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: All 4 reconstruction techniques are feasible and safe. The Roux-en-Y and uncut Roux-en-Y are superior to Billroth-Ⅰ and Billroth-Ⅱ+Braun in terms of reflux esophagitis, gastritis, and bile reflux. Uncut Roux-en-Y may result in better PNI than the others.

The design, fabrication, and testing of an all-metal four-mirror telescope for high-resolution remote sensing is presented in this paper. The system works in the visible (VIS) band and is designed with a focal length of 1406 mm, an aperture of 200 mm, and a full field of view (FOV) of 1.32°. The mechanical structure is designed to realize the snap-together alignment. The primary mirror (M1) and tertiary mirror (M3) are designed as a co-substrate element to simplify the fabrication and alignment. The telescope's weight is 3.5 kg, and the volume is just φ230×220mm3. Metallic mirrors are fabricated with single-point diamond turning, and post-polishing is used to correct the mirror's surface form deviation and remove turning tool marks effectively. After polishing, the RMS value of the mirror surface form deviation of the final mirror can reach 0.02λ at λ=632.8nm, and the surface roughness Ra value is about 1.83 nm. Benefiting from the all-metal mechanical design, the alignment process of the telescope is fast and accurate. The interferometric wavefront, modulation transfer function, and focal length of the telescope are measured, and the results demonstrated that it achieves the near-diffraction-limited imaging performance.

Gastric cancer is a disease with high heterogeneity, and this heterogeneity may result in an uneven distribution of subclones with varied genetic properties at disease locations (spatial heterogeneity) or temporal changes in subclonal composition (temporal heterogeneity). We present the case of a 69-year-old woman with metastatic gastric cancer who presented for axillary lymph node enlargement and underwent axillary lymphadenectomy. Pathological evidence showed human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)(3+). Abdominal computed tomography revealed a mass in the gastric body, gastroscopic biopsy showed HER2(3+). After tumor shrinkage by preoperative translational chemotherapy (oxaliplatin, calcium folate, fluorouracil) and targeted therapy (trastuzumab), she had laparoscopic-assisted total gastrectomy. However, HER2 immunohistochemistry was found to be diffusely negative in the surgically removed tissue, and there was no evidence of HER2 amplification in the whole exon sequencing either. After 10 months of trastuzumab treatment, her disease progressed. Although trastuzumab treatment was initially beneficial, the residual HER2-negative subclones may cause tumor recurrence and metastasis due to temporal heterogeneity, as shown in this case.

CeO2 nanoparticle-loaded MnO2 nanoflowers, prepared by a hydrothermal method followed by an adsorption-calcination technique, were utilized for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 at low temperatures. The effects of Ce/Mn ratio and thermal calcination temperature on the NH3-SCR activity of the CeO2-MnO2 nanocomposites were studied comprehensively. The as-prepared CeO2-MnO2 catalysts show high NOx reduction efficiency in the temperature range of 150-300 °C, with a complete NOx conversion at 200 °C for the optimal sample. The excellent NH3-SCR performance could be ascribed to high surface area, intimate contact, and strong synergistic interaction between CeO2 nanoparticles and MnO2 nanoflowers of the well-designed composite catalyst. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTs) characterizations evidence that the SCR reaction on the surface of the CeO2-MnO2 nanocomposites mainly follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism. Our work provides useful guidance for the development of composite oxide-based low temperature NH3-SCR catalysts.

BACKGROUND: No international consensus on the treatment of advanced gastric cancer (AGC) exists. In the absence of well-designed, comparative studies between neoadjuvant versus adjuvant strategies, concerns about increased risk of postoperative complications remain barriers to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for AGC. We evaluated surgical outcomes of AGC patients who received minimally invasive radical gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy after NAC. METHODS: We collected data from two high-volume gastric cancer programs in the United States and China between January 2015 and December 2019 with the last follow-up in February 2020. AGC patients undergoing minimally invasive radical surgery were included. After propensity score-matching, surgical outcomes were analyzed. Risk-factor of complications was analyzed in the whole cohort. RESULTS: After 1:1 propensity score-matching, 97 patients were included in each cohort. NAC + surgery cohort was younger (58.2 ± 10.3 vs. 61.3 ± 9.6, P = 0.036) with lower preoperative WBC count (5.7 ± 2.8 vs. 6.9 ± 2.1 × 109/ml) than the surgery upfront cohort. NAC was not a risk-factor for postoperative complications (odds ratio [OR], 0.859; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.46-1.60; P = 0.633). Overall risk-factors of postoperative complications included age ≥ 60 years (OR, 21.338; 95% CI, 5.00-91.05; P < 0.001), tumor size ≥ 5 cm (OR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.08-1.83; P < 0.001), operation time ≥ 240 min (OR, 5.53; 95% CI, 1.26-24.26; P = 0.012), and ASA classification ≥ II (OR, 13.14; 95% CI, 4.12-24.73; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: NAC before minimally invasive radical gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy does not increase postoperative complications, and these findings support broader application of NAC and MIS for AGC. Additional studies are required to determine the effect of NAC on long-term survival.

A miniaturized immersed imaging spectrometer possessing long slit and large relative aperture is proposed. It is integrated monolithically with three concentric optical components. Through the chief ray tracing, we analyzed its astigmatism characteristic and then deduced the anastigmatic condition for long slit. Meanwhile, it is athermal by matching the suitable lens materials to compensate thermal defocus. Based on the anastigmatic and athermal conditions, we have designed a miniaturized VNIR immersed imaging spectrometer and developed the prototype. Its slit is 48 mm long and it is optically fast with an F-number of 2.5. The new form shows about 12 times smaller in volume than the classic Offner-Chrisp imaging spectrometer and weighs only 2 kg, and has excellent thermal adaptability while temperature changes between -40 °C and 60 °C. Meanwhile, fabrication of core elements and gluing process of the immersed imaging spectrometer are presented. Test results of the prototype show superior performance with high imaging quality and small smile and keystone distortions. Such miniaturized immersed imaging spectrometer will greatly improve the performance and reduce the costs of wide swath hyperspectral remote sensing, and is desirable for usage on small plane or satellite platforms.

To improve the swath width and quantitative accuracy of hyperspectral payloads on a geostationary orbit, a long-slit polarization-insensitive imaging spectrometer is designed and demonstrated in this paper. For the wide swath, several long-slit spectrometers with the same specification have been designed and compared. The result shows that the Wynne-Offner spectrometer has advantages in increasing slit length and reducing volume, and it is suitable for being spliced for ultra-wide swath. To solve the problem of inaccurate radiation measuring caused by the polarization of imaging spectrometers, the requirement for linear polarization sensitivity (LPS) is theoretically analyzed and assessed. As diffraction grating is the main polarization-sensitive element in an imaging spectrometer, we propose to increase the apical angle of the grating groove to reduce its LPS and compensate its residual polarization by specially polarized optical films coated on lens surfaces, thus the polarization-insensitive system is achieved. At last, a VNIR spectrometer with superior spatial and spectral performance is developed, and its slit is 61.44 mm long. The maximum LPS of this system is reduced from 10.0% to 2.3% (test 2.5%) after the depolarization design, which greatly reduces the uncertainty of the measuring radiation caused by polarization. The developed imaging spectrometer can play a role in quantitative hyperspectral remote sensing, especially in wide-swath applications on geostationary orbit.

Bragg-gratings have been frequently used to design compact and high extinction ratio (ER) on-chip polarizers. However, the strong reflection of the unwanted polarization may deteriorate the performance of the light source or cause unwanted interferences. In this paper, we propose a Bragg-grating-based all-silicon TM-pass polarizer with low reflection, low insertion loss (IL) and high ER. Unlike previously reported polarizers based on single mode waveguides, we construct the Bragg grating with a multimode waveguide, which not only acts as a Bragg reflector, but also a mode-order converter to convert the reflected TE light into higher order modes to be eventually filtered out by utilizing a tapered transition. On the other hand, the grating has little adverse influence on the TM input light since it works at sub-wavelength-guided wave propagation regime. Finally, the polarizer obtained has a length of 30µm, an ER of 51.83dB, an IL of 0.08dB, and an operating bandwidth of ∼61nm for ER > 30dB at the wavelength of 1.55µm. More importantly, the reflection of the unwanted polarization is suppressed to -12.6dB, which can be further lowered via additional design optimization. Our work points to a new direction for making better on-chip polarizers.

Mainstream anaerobic wastewater treatment has received increasing attention for the recovery of methane-rich biogas from biodegradable organics, but subsequent mainstream nitrogen and dissolved methane removal at low temperatures remains a critical challenge in practical applications. In this study, granular sludge coupling n-DAMO with Anammox was employed for mainstream nitrogen removal, and the dissolved methane removal potential of granular sludge at low temperatures was investigated. A stable nitrogen removal rate (0.94 kg N m-3 d-1 at 20 °C) was achieved with a high-level effluent quality (<3.0 mg TN L-1) in a lab-scale membrane granular sludge reactor (MGSR). With decreasing temperature, the nitrogen removal rate dropped to 0.55 kg N m-3 d-1 at 10 °C, while the effluent concentration remained <1.0 mg TN L-1. The granular sludge with an average diameter of 1.8 mm proved to retain sufficient biomass (27 g VSS L-1), which enabled n-DAMO and Anammox activity at a hydraulic retention time as low as 2.16 h even at 10 °C. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and scanning electron microscopy revealed a stable community composition and compact structure of granular sludge during long-term operation. Energy recovery could be maximized by recovering most of the dissolved methane in mainstream anaerobic effluent, as only a small amount of dissolved methane was capable of supporting denitrifying methanotrophs in granular sludge, which enabled high-level nitrogen removal.

Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) can affect intestinal barrier with a high mortality. To date, effective therapies for SAP are still in urgently need. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of anthranilic acid active synthetic derivative, N-(3',4'-dimethoxycinnamonyl) anthranilic acid (3,4-DAA), in intestinal barrier dysfunction of SAP. In this study, SAP mice model was induced by caerulein combined with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). SAP mice were pretreated with 3,4-DAA orally. Histological structures of pancreatic and intestinal tissues were observed via hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining. Pancreas myeloperoxidase (MPO), serum lipase, and amylase were detected using corresponding kits. Western blot analysis and reverse transcription and quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) were employed to determine the levels of inflammatory factors in both pancreatic and intestinal tissues. Moreover, the levels of intestinal barrier-related proteins, NLRP3 inflammasome and NF-κB pathway were examined by western blot analysis. Result revealed that 3,4-DAA significantly attenuated pancreas and intestine damage, inhibited the release of inflammatory factors and intestinal barrier dysfunction. Moreover, the expression of NLRP3 and phospho-NF-κB p65 in pancreatic and intestinal tissues was notably suppressed by 3,4-DAA. To sum up, these results demonstrated that 3,4-DAA could ameliorate SAP, partly attributing to the inhibition of intestinal barrier dysfunction and the release of inflammatory factors. These findings may provide a new mechanism support for 3,4-DAA application in the clinical treatment of SAP.
