BACKGROUND: High-resolution metabolomics (HRM) is an innovative tool to study challenging infectious diseases like leprosy, where the pathogen cannot be grown with standard methods. Here, we use HRM to better understand associations between disease manifestations, nutrition, and host metabolism. METHODS: From 2018 to 2019, adults with leprosy and controls were recruited in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Plasma metabolites were detected using an established HRM workflow and characterized by accurate mass, mass to charge ratio m/z and retention time. The mummichog informatics package compared metabolic pathways between cases and controls and between multibacillary (MB) and paucibacillary (PB) leprosy. Additionally, select individual metabolites were quantified and compared. RESULTS: Thirty-nine cases (62% MB and 38% PB) and 25 controls were enrolled. We found differences (P < .05) in several metabolic pathways, including fatty acid metabolism, carnitine shuttle, retinol, vitamin D3, and C-21 steroid metabolism, between cases and controls with lower retinol and associated metabolites in cases. Between MB and PB, leukotrienes, prostaglandins, tryptophan, and cortisol were all found to be lower in MB (P < .05). DISCUSSION: Metabolites associated with several nutrient-related metabolic pathways appeared differentially regulated in leprosy, especially MB versus PB. This pilot study demonstrates the metabolic interdependency of these pathways, which may play a role in the pathophysiology of disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review addresses the newest findings on micronutrient status and protein-energy malnutrition in the increasingly aging global population; understanding the nutritional challenges they face is vital for healthcare, well being, and public health. RECENT FINDINGS: The review examines deficiencies in macro- and micronutrients among nonhospitalized, free-living older adults, revealing significant associated health consequences, including frailty, cognitive decline, and reduced quality of life. Deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, and E, are common in older populations, emphasizing the need for close monitoring for status of these. Furthermore, water-soluble vitamin deficiencies, especially vitamins B12 and C are also common, and pose health risks, including neurological disorders and cognitive decline. Iron and iodine deficiencies contribute to anemia, and neurocognitive disorders. Finally, protein-energy malnutrition is common in older adults living in high-resource countries and may occur concomitant with depletion of one or more micronutrients. SUMMARY: Addressing specific nutritional deficiencies is fundamental to enhancing the wellbeing and quality of life for free-living older adults. Protein-energy malnutrition, impacting over 25% of those aged 65 and above, results in a range of health issues, including poor wound healing, susceptibility to infections, anemia, and delayed convalescence. These concerns are aggravated by inadequate energy, macronutrient, and micronutrient intake, affecting muscle strength and overall health. Future research should focus on tailored appropriate monitoring of at-risk individuals, specific nutritional interventions, and dietary strategies to mitigate these issues and improve health outcomes among older adults.

One of the key strategies for radiochemical research facilities is the automation of synthesis processes. Unnecessary manual operations increase the radiation exposure of personnel, while simultaneously threatening the reliability of syntheses. We have previously reported an affordable open-source system comprising 3D-printed continuous flow reactors, a custom syringe pump, and a pressure regulator that can be used to perform radiofluorinations. In this paper, we address additional essential processes that are needed for radiotracer development and synthesis, with the aim of making laboratory work safer and research more efficient. We have designed and evaluated a fully automated system for rapidly and effectively processing and drying aqueous [18 F]fluoride that can be directly connected to the cyclotron. This process relies on triflyl fluoride gas generation and allows nucleophilic [18 F]fluoride to be prepared safely in a hotcell within 10 min and an activity recovery of 91.7 ± 1.6% (n = 5). Owing to the need for convenient radiofluorinated prosthetic ligands, we have adapted our continuous flow system to produce [18 F]fluoroethyl tosylate (FEOTs) and [18 F]fluoroethyl triflate (FEOTf), prosthetic groups that are widely used for late-stage fluoroethylation of PET tracers. The processes as well as the radiolabeling of different groups are compared and comprehensively discussed. Having a method providing [18 F]fluoroethyl tosylate (FEOTs) as well as [18 F]fluoroethyl triflate (FEOTf) quickly and highly efficiently is beneficial for radiochemical research.

The metabolic signaling pathways that drive pathologic tissue inflammation and damage in humans with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) are not well understood. Using combined methods in plasma high-resolution metabolomics, lipidomics and cytokine profiling from a multicohort study of humans with pulmonary TB disease, we discovered that IL-1ß-mediated inflammatory signaling was closely associated with TCA cycle remodeling, characterized by accumulation of the proinflammatory metabolite succinate and decreased concentrations of the anti-inflammatory metabolite itaconate. This inflammatory metabolic response was particularly active in persons with multidrug-resistant (MDR)-TB that received at least 2 months of ineffective treatment and was only reversed after 1 year of appropriate anti-TB chemotherapy. Both succinate and IL-1ß were significantly associated with proinflammatory lipid signaling, including increases in the products of phospholipase A2, increased arachidonic acid formation, and metabolism of arachidonic acid to proinflammatory eicosanoids. Together, these results indicate that decreased itaconate and accumulation of succinate and other TCA cycle intermediates is associated with IL-1ß-mediated proinflammatory eicosanoid signaling in pulmonary TB disease. These findings support host metabolic remodeling as a key driver of pathologic inflammation in human TB disease.

BACKGROUND: Correction of nutritional vitamin deficiency is recommended in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The optimal daily dose of vitamin D to achieve or maintain vitamin D sufficiency is unknown. METHODS: We conducted a phase III, double-blind, randomized trial of two doses of vitamin D3 in children ≥ 9 years of age with CKD stages 3-5 or kidney transplant recipients. Patients were randomized to 1000 IU or 4000 IU of daily vitamin D3 orally. We measured 25-hydroxvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels at baseline, 3 months and 6 months. The primary efficacy outcome was the percentage of patients who were vitamin D replete (25(OH)D ≥ 30 ng/mL) at 6 months. RESULTS: Ninety-eight patients were enrolled: 49 randomized into each group. Eighty (81.6%) patients completed the study and were analyzed. Baseline plasma 25(OH)D levels were ≥ 30 ng/mL in 12 (35.3%) and 12 (27.3%) patients in the 1000 IU and 4000 IU treatment groups, respectively. At 6 months, plasma 25(OH)D levels were ≥ 30 ng/mL in 33.3% (95% CI: 18.0-51.8%) and 74.4% (95% CI: 58.8-86.5%) in the 1000 IU and 4000 IU treatment groups, respectively (p = 0.0008). None of the patients developed vitamin D toxicity or hypercalcemia. CONCLUSIONS: In children with CKD, 1000 IU of daily vitamin D3 is unlikely to achieve or maintain a plasma 25(OH)D ≥ 30 ng/mL. In children with CKD stages 3-5, a dose of vitamin D3 4000 IU daily was effective in achieving or maintaining vitamin D sufficiency. Madagascar's biota is characterized by an extraordinary species richness, with a high degree of endemism. The island's freshwater habitats harbor numerous micro-endemic species, restricted to particular regions and thus particularly at risk of extinction, due to deforestation, overfishing, and introduction of exotic species. The present study investigates for which threatened Malagasy freshwater fish species ex situ populations have already been established, as a baseline to prioritize actions to develop an effective ex situ conservation breeding network. Populations in zoos and aquaria were primarily determined using the Zoological Information System. Of 173 fish species recorded from Malagasy freshwater habitats, 123 exclusively inhabit freshwater; 79 of these are endemic to Madagascar, and 50 are classified as threatened. Our survey found 21 Malagasy freshwater fish species kept in zoos worldwide, of which 19 are endemic and threatened (22 if counting species kept by private breeders). Nine of the 19 Malagasy freshwater fish species kept in zoos have successfully reproduced within the 12 months preceding our survey. The ex situ conservation activities for threatened Malagasy freshwater fishes thus have not improved significantly since the strong start in the early 2000s. More than half of the 50 threatened endemic Malagasy freshwater fish species (viz. 31 species) are not kept ex situ, including 11 species ranked as Critically Endangered. Based on these findings we call for a better distribution of offspring among institutions, including private breeders in the framework of citizen conservation initiatives; a closer connection of ichthyological field research in Madagascar with conservation breeding efforts to set up ex situ populations-both in Madagascar and abroad-of species not yet kept in captivity; and the development of effective, integrated in situ and ex situ conservation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Substantial research has investigated the adverse effects of traffic-related air pollutants (TRAP) on human health. Convincing associations between TRAP and respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are known, but the underlying biological mechanisms are not well established. High-resolution metabolomics (HRM) is a promising platform for untargeted characterization of molecular mechanisms between TRAP and health indexes. OBJECTIVES: We examined metabolic perturbations associated with short-term exposures to TRAP, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC) among 180 participants of the Center for Health Discovery and Well-Being (CHDWB), a cohort of Emory University-affiliated employees. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on baseline visits of 180 CHDWB participants enrolled during 2008-2012, in whom HRM profiling was determined in plasma samples using liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry with positive and negative electrospray ionization (ESI) modes. Ambient pollution concentrations were measured at an ambient monitor near downtown Atlanta. Metabolic perturbations associated with TRAP exposures were assessed following an untargeted metabolome-wide association study (MWAS) framework using feature-specific Tobit regression models, followed by enriched pathway analysis and chemical annotation. RESULTS: Subjects were predominantly white (76.1%) and non-smokers (95.6%), and all had at least a high school education. In total, 7821 and 4123 metabolic features were extracted from the plasma samples by the negative and positive ESI runs, respectively. There are 3421 features significantly associated with at least one air pollutant by negative ion mode, and 1691 features by positive ion mode. Biological pathways enriched by features associated with the pollutants are primarily involved in nucleic acids damage/repair (e.g., pyrimidine metabolism), nutrient metabolism (e.g., fatty acid metabolism), and acute inflammation (e.g., histidine metabolism and tyrosine metabolism). NO2 and EC were associated most consistently with these pathways. We confirmed the chemical identity of 8 metabolic features in negative ESI and 2 features in positive ESI, including metabolites closely linked to oxidative stress and inflammation, such as histamine, tyrosine, tryptophan, and proline. CONCLUSIONS: We identified a range of ambient pollutants, including components of TRAP, associated with differences in the metabolic phenotype among the cohort of 180 subjects. We found Tobit models to be a robust approach to handle missing data among the metabolic features. The results were encouraging of further use of HRM and MWAS approaches for characterizing molecular mechanisms underlying exposure to TRAP.

Besides the most common sequon of amino acids found in glycopeptides, namely, N-X-S/T, where X can be any amino acid except proline, a small number of nonconsensus motifs have been found in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms, for example, Q-G-T. Because of the importance of glycopeptides in biotechnology and pharmacy, an adequate synthetic approach to these structures is highly important. In this manuscript, we report the efficient chemical batch synthesis of new glutamine-based glycopeptide structures, which can be used to represent cell surface elements in further biological investigations.

Thermoregulation in Malayan sun bears is not fully understood. Therefore, in this study the effect of meteorological variables on both behavioural and autonomic thermoregulatory mechanisms in sun bears was examined in order to identify temperature thresholds for the activation of various thermoregulatory mechanisms. Infrared thermography was used to non‒invasively determine body surface temperature (TS) distribution in relation to ambient temperature (TA) and to determine the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) of sun bears. Thermographic measurements were performed on 10 adult sun bears at TA between 5 °C and 30 °C in three European zoos. To assess behaviours that contribute to thermoregulation, nine adult sun bears were observed at TA ranging from 5 °C to 34 °C by instantaneous scan sampling in 60 s intervals for a total of 787 h. Thermographic measurements revealed that the TNZ of sun bears lies between 24 °C and 28 °C and that heat is equally dissipated over the body surface. Behavioural data showed that behaviours related to thermoregulation occurred in advance of energetically costly autonomic mechanisms, and were highly correlated with TA and solar radiation. While the temperature threshold for the onset of thermoregulatory behaviours below the TNZ lies around 15 °C, which is well below the lower critical temperature (TLC) assessed by thermography, the onset for behaviours to prevent overheating occurred at 28 °C, which was closer to the estimated upper critical temperature (TUC) of sun bears. These findings provide useful data on the thermal requirements of sun bears with respect to the species potential to cope with the effects of climate change and deforestation which are occurring in their natural range. Furthermore, these results may have important implications for the care and welfare of bears in captivity and should be taken into consideration, when designing and managing facilities.

Background/aim: Adipokines play an important role in the regulation of metabolism. In critical illness, they alter serum levels and are suspected to worsen clinical outcomes. But the effect of the route of nutrition on adipokines is not known. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the route of nutrition and adipokine levels in critically ill patients. Materials and methods: This prospective study was performed in an intensive care unit (ICU). Patients admitted to the ICU for least 72 h and receiving either enteral nutrition (EN) via tube feeding or parenteral nutrition (PN) were enrolled. Serum was obtained at baseline, 24 h, and 72 h for concentrations of leptin, adiponectin, resistin, glucagon­like peptide 1 (GLP­1), insulin­like growth factors 1 (IGF­1), and ghrelin. Results: A total of 26 patients were included in the study. Thirteen patients received EN and 13 patients received PN. In the PN group, leptin level significantly increased (P = 0.037), adiponectin and ghrelin significantly decreased during follow up (P = 0.037, P = 0.008, respectively). There was no significant change between all adipokines in the EN group and resistin, IGF­1 and GLP­1 in the PN group during follow up. Resistin levels were markedly lower in the EN group at both 24 h (P = 0.015) and 72 h (P = 0.006) while GLP­1 levels were higher in the EN group at baseline, 24 h, and 72 h (P = 0.018, P = 0.005, and P = 0.003, respectively). There were no differences in leptin, adiponectin, IGF­1, and ghrelin levels over time. Conclusion: The delivery of EN in critical illness was associated with decreased resistin levels and increased GLP­1 levels. Thus, the route of nutrition may impact the clinical outcome in critical illness due to adipokines.

For investigations on the biological functions of oligosaccharides and peptidomimetics, new asparagine-based mono- and disaccharides containing glycopeptides were prepared in solution. The applicability of two common peptide coupling reagents, using an orthogonal Fmoc/t-Bu strategy along with acetyl protecting groups for the carbohydrate moiety, was studied. Thus, the prepared libraries of glycopeptides were designed as model systems of cell surfaces for future investigations by combined preparative mass spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) using soft-landing electrospray beam deposition (ES-IBD), on metal surfaces.

BACKGROUND: Randomised controlled trials of adjunctive vitamin D in pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) treatment have yielded conflicting results. Individual participant data meta-analysis could identify factors explaining this variation. METHODS: We meta-analysed individual participant data from randomised controlled trials of vitamin D in patients receiving antimicrobial therapy for pulmonary TB. Primary outcome was time to sputum culture conversion. Secondary outcomes were time to sputum smear conversion, mean 8-week weight and incidence of adverse events. Pre-specified subgroup analyses were done according to baseline vitamin D status, age, sex, drug susceptibility, HIV status, extent of disease and vitamin D receptor genotype. RESULTS: Individual participant data were obtained for 1850 participants in eight studies. Vitamin D did not influence time to sputum culture conversion overall (adjusted HR 1.06, 95% CI 0.91-1.23), but it did accelerate sputum culture conversion in participants with multidrug-resistant pulmonary TB (adjusted HR 13.44, 95% CI 2.96-60.90); no such effect was seen in those whose isolate was sensitive to rifampicin and/or isoniazid (adjusted HR 1.02, 95% CI 0.88-1.19; p-value for interaction=0.02). Vitamin D accelerated sputum smear conversion overall (adjusted HR 1.15, 95% CI 1.01-1.31), but did not influence other secondary outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D did not influence time to sputum culture conversion overall, but it accelerated sputum culture conversion in patients with multidrug-resistant pulmonary TB.

RESUMO

Iodoarene catalysts can be applied in versatile reactions, for instance in the construction of complex chiral molecules via dearomatization of simple aromatic compounds. Recently, we reported the synthesis of the first carbohydrate-based chiral iodoarene catalysts and their application in asymmetric catalysis. Here we describe the synthesis of some new and improved catalysts. An account on how we got to the improved catalyst design, as well as the X-ray structure of one of the carbohydrate-based iodoarenes, is given.

RESUMO

This article describes the development and manufacturing of lab equipment, which is needed for the use in flow chemistry. We developed a rack of four syringe pumps controlled by one Arduino computer, which can be manufactured with a commonly available 3D printer and readily available parts. Also, we printed various flow reactor cells, which are fully customizable for each individual reaction. With this equipment we performed some multistep glycosylation reactions, where multiple 3D-printed flow reactors were used in series.

Diazeniumdiolates (NONOates) are a class of nitric-oxide-releasing substances widely used in studies of NO/cGMP signalling. Because spatiotemporal control is highly desirable for such purposes, we have synthesised a new Npom-caged pyrrolidine NONOate. A kinetic analysis together with a Griess assay showed the photodependent release of NO with high quantum yield (UV light). In primary vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), our compound was reliably able to induce fast increases in cGMP, as measured with a genetically encoded FRET-based cGMP sensor and further validated by the phosphorylation of the downstream target vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP). Thanks to their facile synthesis, good decaging kinetics and capability to activate cGMP signalling in a fast and efficient manner, Npom-protected NONOates allow for improved spatiotemporal control of NO/cGMP signalling.

Background: Both systemic redox status and diet quality are associated with risk outcomes in chronic disease. It is not known, however, the extent to which diet quality influences plasma thiol/disulfide redox status. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of diet, as measured by diet quality scores and other dietary factors, on systemic thiol/disulfide redox status. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of 685 working men and women (ages ≥18 y) in Atlanta, GA. Diet was assessed by 3 diet quality scores: the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS). We measured concentrations of plasma glutathione (GSH), cysteine, their associated oxidized forms [glutathione disulfide (GSSG) and cystine (CySS), respectively], and their redox potentials (EhGSSG and EhCySS) to determine thiol/disulfide redox status. Linear regression modeling was performed to assess relations between diet and plasma redox after adjustment for age, body mass index (BMI), sex, race, and history of chronic disease. Results: MDS was positively associated with plasma GSH (ß = 0.02; 95% CI: 0.003, 0.03) and total GSH (GSH + GSSG) (ß = 0.02; 95% CI: 0.003, 0.03), and inversely associated with the CySS:GSH ratio (ß = -0.02; 95% CI: -0.04, -0.004). There were significant independent associations between individual MDS components (dairy, vegetables, fish, and monounsaturated fat intake) and varying plasma redox indexes (P < 0.05). AHEI and DASH diet quality indexes and other diet factors of interest were not significantly correlated with plasma thiol and disulfide redox measures. Conclusion: Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was significantly associated with a favorable plasma thiol/disulfide redox profile, independent of BMI, in a generally healthy working adult population. Although longitudinal studies are warranted, these findings contribute to the feasibility of targeting a Mediterranean diet to improve plasma redox status.

Phosphinooxazoline (PHOX) ligands are an important class of ligands in asymmetric catalysis. We synthesized ten novel D-fructose-derived spiro-fused PHOX ligands with different steric and electronic demand. The application of two of them was tested in asymmetric allylic alkylation. The ligands are prepared in two steps from readily available 1,2-O-isopropylidene protected ß-D-fructopyranoses by the BF3·OEt2-promoted Ritter reaction with 2-bromobenzonitrile to construct the oxazoline moiety followed by Ullmann coupling of the resulting aryl bromides with diphenylphosphine. Both steps proceeded mostly in good to high yields (57-86% for the Ritter reaction and 35-89% for the Ullmann coupling). The Ritter reaction gave two anomers, which could be separated by column chromatography. The prepared ligands showed promising results (er of up to 84:16) in Tsuji-Trost reactions with diphenylallyl acetate as model substrate.

Immunomodulation is a common feature of chronic helminth infections and mainly attributed to the secretion of bioactive molecules, which target and modify host immune cells. In this study, we show that the helminth immunomodulator AvCystatin, a cysteine protease inhibitor, induces a novel regulatory macrophage (Mreg; AvCystatin-Mreg), which is sufficient to mitigate major parameters of allergic airway inflammation and colitis in mice. A single adoptive transfer of AvCystatin-Mreg before allergen challenge suppressed allergen-specific IgE levels, the influx of eosinophils into the airways, local and systemic Th2 cytokine levels, and mucus production in lung bronchioles of mice, whereas increasing local and systemic IL-10 production by CD4(+) T cells. Moreover, a single administration of AvCystatin-Mreg during experimentally induced colitis strikingly reduced intestinal pathology. Phenotyping of AvCystatin-Mreg revealed increased expression of a distinct group of genes including LIGHT, sphingosine kinase 1, CCL1, arginase-1, and costimulatory molecules, CD16/32, ICAM-1, as well as PD-L1 and PD-L2. In cocultures with dendritic cells and CD4(+) T cells, AvCystatin-Mreg strongly induced the production of IL-10 in a cell-contact-independent manner. Collectively, our data identify a specific suppressive macrophage population induced by a single parasite immunomodulator, which protects against mucosal inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency and anemia affect up to 50% to 75% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Iron deficiency in IBD may be difficult to diagnose because of the effect of inflammation on iron status biomarkers. Thus, there is a need for better methods to accurately determine iron status in IBD. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the association of inflammation with hemoglobin content of reticulocytes (CHr) and the utility of CHr in comparison to standard iron biomarkers. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of children with IBD. Iron biomarkers (CHr, ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor [sTfR], hepcidin, hemoglobin) were measured along with systemic biomarkers of inflammation (C-reactive protein, α1-acid glycoprotein]. Spearman correlations were used to evaluate the relation of inflammation and iron biomarkers. The criterion standard for iron deficiency was defined as inflammation-corrected ferritin <15 µg/L or sTfR >8.3 mg/L. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to estimate the prognostic values of all iron biomarkers to identify patients with iron deficiency. RESULTS: We analyzed data in 62 children ages 5 to 18 years. Sixty-nine percent of our subjects had Crohn disease and 31% had ulcerative colitis, of which 42% were girls and 53% African American. The prevalence of anemia was 32%, of iron deficiency was 52% using ferritin <15 µg/L or sTfR >8.3 mg/L, 39% using red blood cell distribution width of >14.5%, 26% using body iron stores of <0 mg/kg body weight, 25% using CHr of <28 pg, and 11% using mean corpuscular volume of <75 fL/cell. The prevalence of elevated CRP or AGP was 48%. After correcting ferritin and sTfR levels for inflammation, the prevalence of iron deficiency was 68%. CHr was correlated with C-reactive protein (rs -0.44, P < 0.001) and α1-acid glycoprotein (rs -0.37, P < 0.05). The optimal prognostic value for inflammation-adjusted CHr to predict iron deficiency was 34 pg (area under the receiver operating characteristic of 0.70), with 88% sensitivity and 30% specificity. CONCLUSIONS: Iron deficiency and anemia are common in this pediatric IBD cohort. All explored iron biomarkers, including CHr, were affected by inflammation and should be adjusted. A single iron biomarker is unlikely to best predict iron deficiency in pediatric IBD. Iron intervention studies are needed to examine the response of iron biomarkers to iron supplementation in the setting of inflammation.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) in neonates is an uncommon but highly morbid condition. As SBS survival increases, physiologic complications become more apparent. Few reports in the literature elucidate outcomes for adults with a pediatric history of SBS. We present a case report of a patient, born with complicated gastroschisis resulting in SBS at birth, who subsequently developed symptoms and pathologic changes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as an adult. The patient lived from age 7, after a Bianchi intestinal lengthening procedure, to age 34 independent of parenteral nutrition (PN), but requiring hydration fluid via G-tube. He was then diagnosed with IBD, after presenting with weight loss, diarrhea, and malabsorption, which required resumption of PN and infliximab treatment. This report adds to a small body of the literature which points to a connection between SBS in neonates and subsequent diagnosis of IBD. Recent evidence suggests that SBS and IBD have shared features of mucosal immune dysfunction and altered intestinal microbiota. We review current treatment options for pediatric SBS as well as multidisciplinary and coordinated transition strategies. We conclude that there may be an etiologic connection between SBS and IBD and that this knowledge may impact outcomes and approaches to care.
