Inadequate intake of age-specific energy and nutrients is among the prime immediate causes of child malnutrition. Thus, this study aimed to determine the energy, protein and Fe densities of pre-processed dabi teff-field pea-based optimised novel complementary flour and its contribution to daily energy and nutrients demand by 6-8, 9-11 and 12-23 month-old children. The optimal formula at overall optimisation was identified to be 34·66 % dabi teff, 25 % barley, 15 % oats, 15·34 % field pea, 5 % linseed and 5 % maize with response values of 15·74 % protein, 5·09 % fat, 2·26 % ash, 2·88 % fibre, 73·05 % carbohydrate, 1591·72 kJ/100 g (380·43 kcal/100 g) energy, 32·21 mg/100 g Fe, 77·51 mg/100 g Ca and 2·59 mg/100 g Zn. The energy density of the optimised novel complementary flour was 1·27 kcal/g which fulfilled the Pan American Health Organization/WHO recommendation (≥ 0·8 kcal/g), protein density was 4·14 g/100 kcal and the Fe density was 8·47 mg/100 kcal, which was 2·12 to 10·59 times higher than the recommended value where the optimal had demonstrated to contribute more than 100 % of the daily energy and protein demand and notably more than 200 % of daily Fe demand at moderate bioavailability (0·8-4 mg/100 kcal). These findings showed that the daily recommended dietary allowance for energy, protein and Fe could be attained by the developed dabi teff-field pea-based optimised novel complementary flour and its contribution to the children's daily energy and nutrients demand met the standard, where the product can be used as food-based nutrition intervention to manage protein-energy malnutrition and Fe deficiency anemia in children sustainably.

In the transition period from breastfeeding to the introduction of complementary feeding, the choice of food is extremely important for the child's development as many factors may be related. This study aims to investigate, through a systematic review and qualitative meta-synthesis, influence in the selection of foods in the introduction of complementary foods for children, including qualitative studies without language or publication period restrictions. Searches were performed in PubMed, LILACS, SciELO, Cinahl, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus. Initially, 12,489 articles were selected for tittle reading, 13 were included in the review. Four analytical themes related to factors influencing complementary feeding were identified: family socioeconomic conditions, cultural and family aspects, guidance and advice from health professionals, and factors inherent to the infant. Economic factors, such as the opportunity to offer foods not consumed during the parents' childhood, were emphasized. The influence of grandmothers' opinions and community beliefs and traditions were considered. Trust in pediatricians and community health agents' advice, although considered, conflicted with cultural and family traditions. Mothers/caregivers often preferred to offer foods the child shows preference for, rather than introducing new flavors. The findings underscore the need for a better understanding of qualitative aspects.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Introducing complementary foods to infants is a critical stage in their healthy growth and development process. In this study, we analyzed the feeding habits and choices of caregivers in Taiwan during this essential transition period. METHODS: Data from the 2013-2016 Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan were analyzed. Using a multistage stratified sampling technique, we collected data through questionnaires on the feeding practices, challenges, and information sources associated with complementary feeding. We also investigated the timing of introducing various foods. Certain feeding indicators recommended by the World Health Organization were modified and used for analysis. RESULTS: Among 439 caregivers of infants aged 2-24 months, complementary feeding typically began at 5 months, and it primarily began with cereals and pureed foods. At 6-8 months of age, 98.29% of the infants received these foods. Only 48.39% of infants aged 6-24 months consumed eggs or flesh foods. Among the primary challenges for caregivers were concerns regarding infants' adaptation to new foods (38.2%), refusal of foods by infants (37.1%), and uncertainty regarding which foods to introduce (11.4%). The main sources of information were friends and family (46.9%), the Internet (46.5%), and baby care books (35.6%). Notably, approximately 51% of the respondents used commercial baby foods. CONCLUSION: In Taiwan, although the majority of infants begin complementary feeding on time, the introduction of eggs and flesh foods is typically delayed. Given the growing reliance on the Internet in the modern age, accurate feeding information should be disseminated online.

Complementary foods (CFs) commonly consumed by infants and young children (IYC) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are processed using either single or multi-grain ingredients through simple technologies such as fermentation, malting and roasting. Interestingly, CFs (e.g., ogi, kunu, and dabo) are prepared and fed to infants alongside breastmilk until they are completely weaned up to the infant's second birthday. The grains used for preparing CFs can be contaminated with bacterial and chemical contaminants as a result of poor harvesting, handling or storage practices. The stage at which IYC are introduced to CFs is of utmost importance as it aids in addressing malnutrition and improving their overall health and well-being. Complementary feeding practices across SSA are influenced by socio-economic, cultural and geographical factors such that improper introduction can result in dire health consequences including immune suppression, severe foodborne diseases, poor child growth and development, and sometimes death from malnutrition. Malnutrition often occurs from inadequacies of nutrient intakes and assimilation which affect the ability to maintain normal body functions such as growth, learning abilities, resistance to and recovery from diseases. In SSA, IYC malnutrition still poses an enormous concern, therefore indicating the need for intervention strategies such as the promotion of indigenous crops and elevating traditional knowledge and technologies for formulating CFs. This paper clearly highlights the diversity of CFs in SSA, ingredients utilized, processing techniques, contamination by bacteria and chemicals, and demonstrates the consequences of consuming contaminated CFs, and their influence on IYC health as well as approaches to ensuring safety and scaling up indigenous CFs.

OBJECTIVE: To construct the complementary food texture in infants and young children aged 6 to 23 months, and observe the acceptability of complementary food of different months old infants. METHODS: Based on the domestic and foreign guidelines, consensus and literatures on complementary feeding, and combined with the characteristics of children's growth and development in China. The complementary food texture index of 6-23 months old infants and young children was constructed. One province was selected in the south and north respectively, one city and one rural area was selected as the observation point in each province. The stratified random sampling principle was adopted in each observation point, 240 infants and young children were selected for the acceptability study. According to the food type, 12 common foods were selected to make the complementary food toolkit. The parents were instructed to make complementary food at home according to the corresponding month age, observe and record the acceptability of single/mixed complementary food feeding. RESULTS: The complementary food texture index of 6 months, 7-8 months, 9-11 months, 12-17 months, 18-23 months was constructed. Caregivers could make complementary food at the corresponding month age according to the established complementary food texture index. The acceptability of single complementary food for infants and young children aged 6-23 months was 98.3%, 98.7%, 99.8%, 96.9% and 97.5%, respectively. The acceptability of mixed complementary food for children aged 7-23 months was 98.3%, 99.6%, 93.8% and 97.5%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The complementary food texture index of different month age can be made at home, and the acceptability of different texture is good.

BACKGROUND: Breastmik is considered the optimal source of nutrition in early infancy. However, recommendations and practices for when and how complementary food should be introduced in the first year of life vary worldwide. Early introduction of allergenic foods may prevent food allergies, but if early food introduction influences infant feeding practices is less known. OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess infant feeding practices in the first year of life and to determine if early interventional food introduction influences breastfeeding and dietary diversity. METHODS: Dietary intake was assessed in infants from the population-based clinical trial Preventing Atopic Dermatitis and ALLergies (PreventADALL) in children study. A total of 2397 infants were cluster-randomized at birth into 4 different groups: 1) control, 2) skin intervention, 3) introduction to 4 allergenic foods between 3 and 4 mo of age: peanut, cow milk, wheat, and egg, as small tastings until 6 mo, and 4) combined skin and food interventions. Dietary data were available from at least one of the 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-mo questionnaires in 2059 infants. In the present analysis, groups 1 and 2 constitute the No Food Intervention group, whereas groups 3 and 4 constitute the Food Intervention group. We used the log-rank test and Cox regression to assess the impact of food intervention on age of breastfeeding cessation. Mixed effects logistic regression was used to compare dietary diversity, defined as the number of food categories consumed, between intervention groups. RESULTS: At 3, 6, 9, and 12 mo, 95%, 88%, 67%, and 51% were breastfed, respectively, and breastfeeding duration was not affected by the food intervention. In the No Food Intervention group, mean age of complementary food introduction was 18.3 wk (confidence interval [CI]: 18.1, 18.5). In the Food Intervention group, the dietary diversity score was 1.39 units (CI: 1.16, 1.62) higher at 9 mo (P < 0.001) and 0.7 units (CI: 0.5, 0.9) higher at 12 mo (P < 0.001) compared to the No Food Intervention group. CONCLUSIONS: Early food intervention did not affect breastfeeding rates and increased dietary diversity at 9 and 12 mo.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acceptability of traditional Zambian dishes fortified with Complementary Food for Africa+Dried Fish Powder (ComFA+Fish), a locally sourced protein/micronutrient blend designed to impact nutrient deficiencies among infants and young children (IYC) and improve pregnancy and birth outcomes among women of reproductive age (WRA). DESIGN: During two sensory panels, caregivers evaluated: (1) the acceptability of four ComFA+Fish dishes for household consumption, including fortified chibwabwa fisashi, savory Kapenta chutney, fortified complementary maize porridge and fortified bean-vegetable soup and (2) whether their IYC found the fortified complementary maize porridge acceptable. SETTING: Lake Kariba, Southern Province, Zambia. PARTICIPANTS: Women of reproductive age (n 42) and their IYC aged 6-11 months (n 16) and 12-23 months (n 26) were recruited from fishing villages in Gwembe, Siavonga and Sinazongwe District. RESULTS: A majority of caregivers extremely liked/liked the: (1) fortified chibwabwa fisashi's sensory attributes (94·7 %), convenience (92·8 %) and overall acceptability (100 %); (2) savory Kapenta chutney's sensory attributes (81·8 %), convenience (92·8 %) and overall acceptability (100 %); (3) fortified complementary porridge's sensory attributes (83·5 %), convenience (90·5 %) and overall acceptability (88·1 %) and (4) fortified bean-vegetable soup's sensory attributes (66·8 %), convenience (87·5 %) and overall acceptability (87·5 %). Further, a majority of caregivers evaluated the fortified complementary porridge as highly acceptable to their IYC. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that ComFA+Fish is strategically well placed to fill nutritional gaps among IYC and WRA in Zambia and has the potential to be scaled across sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: The optimal time of starting complementary foods (CFs) in infants remains a subject of debate. This population-based longitudinal cohort study evaluated the association between early CF introduction and body mass index (BMI) in children aged 5-7 years. METHODS: The present study included 917,707 children born in Korea during 2008-2009. Initial timing of CF introduction was obtained by questionnaires administered between 4 and 6 months and 9 and 12 months of age. The cohort consisted of 154,565 eligible individuals who properly completed the screening programme, including structured questionnaires, anthropometric measurements and physical examinations. To balance baseline characteristics, children were subjected to propensity score matching based on 95 covariates, including indicators of baseline health such as perinatal condition, birth weight, economic status, clinical disease and drug exposure. Exposure was defined as introduction to CF at age < 4 months, and outcomes were overweight (BMI z-score > 85th percentile) and obesity (BMI z-score > 95th percentile) at ages 5-7 years. RESULTS: Of the 154,565 eligible children in the observed cohort, 10,499 (6.8%) were introduced to CF at age < 4 months and 144,066 (93.2%) at age ≥ 4 months. Propensity score matching yielded 9680 children introduced to CF at age < 4 months and 35,396 at age ≥ 4 months. The risk for being overweight or obese at age 5-7 years was slightly higher among those who started CF at age < 4 months than at age ≥4 months (adjusted relative risk = 1.06; 95% confidence interval = 1.02-1.09). A similar but stronger association was observed for being obese at age 5-7 years (adjusted relative risk = 1.12; 95% confidence interval = 1.05-1.19). CONCLUSIONS: Early CF introduction before age 4 months was associated with increased BMI at age 5-7 years.

Background: In recent years, there has been an increase in the variety and consumption of commercial infant and toddler food products. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the nutritional profiles of commercial infant and toddler food products sold in Turkey. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of the nutritional composition of products available at in-store and online supermarkets in Turkey was derived from the nutritional information panel on the product label or information provided on manufacturer websites in March 2023. The targeted age group, package type, serving size, ingredients list, and nutrition information (energy [kcal], protein [g], total fat [g], carbohydrate [g], dietary fiber [g], total sugar [g], and sodium [mg] per 100 g) were recorded. Results: Of the 189 products identified, more than 90% (n = 47) of the first foods were fruit-based, while 2% (n = 4) contained only vegetables. Almost half of the products (n = 89, 49%) contained added sugar or sweeteners, 41 (22%) had added sugar, and 1 in 3 products (n = 68, 36%) had sugar from fruit-based sources. One in 10 products (n = 18, 9.5%) contained added salt while 40% of the products (n = 76) were above the WHO Europe sodium standards. Almost half of the products (n = 6, 46%) targeting the 12 months older age group were pureed foods using squeeze pouch packaging. Conclusions: The majority of commercial infant and toddler food products did not adhere to nutrition guidelines. There is a need for stronger composition standards for commercial infant and toddler food products by reducing sugar and sodium content, reducing the use of fruits and sweet vegetables, and increasing the variety of products containing different types of vegetables.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the timing of supplementary food and its effect on the development of infants at 6-8 months of age. METHODS: A total of 168 breastfed healthy infants in Beijing and Chenzhou were selected and followed up from birth to 8 months of age. According to the time of the first supplementary food addition, the survey subjects were divided into a reasonable supplementary food group and an unreasonable supplementary food group. Repeated measures analysis was used to compare the differences in the Z scores of the two groups of infants. RESULTS: Infants who added complementary food between 4-6 months accounted for 80.4%(n=135). There were 6.0%(n=10) of infants who added complementary food for more than 8 months of age(added too late), and the timing was earlier than 4 months old infants accounted for 6.5%(n=11). The result of repeated measurement analysis showed that the body mass index for age Z score(BAZ) of infants whose complementary foods were added at an unreasonable time was different from that of infants with reasonable complementary food addition(P=0.046). Infants whose complementary food was added at an unreasonable time had higher BAZ at the age of 6 months(ß=0.615, 95%CI 0.053-1.178). CONCLUSION: Few infants add complementary foods too early or too late, and the timing of complementary foods for most infants was between 4-6 months of age. Unreasonable complementary food addition time might have a short-term impact on the infants' BAZ.

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition puts children in a physical and cognitive disadvantage. Animal source foods (ASFs) are important components of nutritious diets and play a significant role in increasing dietary diversity and minimizing the risk of undernutrition among children. Ethiopia still suffers from child undernutrition and there's no adequate information regarding consumption of ASFs. The objective of this study was to determine the magnitude and determinanats of ASF consumption among children 6-23 months of age. METHODOLOGY: A total weighted sample of 2861 children drawn from the 2016 Ethiopian demographic and health survey was analyzed using "SVY" command of STATA 14.0. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the independent determinants of ASF consumption. The strength of the association was measured by odds ratio and 95% confidence interval and p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Nearly half (46.5%) of the children reported consuming any type of ASF. Religion, child age, number of household assets, number of livestock owned by a household, and ownership of land usable for agriculture were significant determinants of the outcome variable. The odds of ASF consumption were six times, twice, and 70% lower in orthodox children compared to other (catholic, traditional, or others), muslim, and protestant children, respectively. Household ownership of assets and livestock led to an increase in consumption of ASF by 19 and 2%, respectively. Children aged 18-23 months were more likely to consume ASF as compared to the younger age group (6-8 months old children). In the contrary, children from households that own land usable for agriculture were 33% less likely to consume ASFs as compared to those from households that do not own. CONCLUSIONS: In Ethiopia, only nearly half of children aged 6-23 months consume any type of ASF. The findings of this study imply that ASF consumption can be increased through integrated actions that involve community and religious leaders and programs focused on empowering households' capability of owning other socioeconomic entities including assets and livestock. This study also may contribute to the growing body of research works on the importance of ASF provision in preventing child undernutrition.

BACKGROUND: Childhood undernutrition is a major public health concern that needs special attention to achieve 2025 global nutrition targets. Moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), manifest as wasting (low weight-for-height), affects 33 million children under 5, yet there are currently no global guidelines for its treatment. We recently performed a randomized-controlled clinical study of a microbiota-directed complementary food formulation (MDCF-2) in 12-18-month-old Bangladeshi children with MAM. The results revealed that MDCF-2, freshly prepared each day, produced a significantly greater improvement in ponderal growth than a standard ready-to-use supplementary food (RUSF), an effect that is associated with repair of the disrupted gut microbial community development that occurs in children with MAM. To test the generalizability of these results in acutely malnourished children at other sites, there is a pressing need for a packaged, shelf-stable, organoleptically-acceptable formulation that is bioequivalent to MDCF-2. This report describes the protocol for a clinical study to evaluate candidate formulations designed to meet these criteria. METHODS: A randomized single-blind study will be conducted in 8-12-month-old Bangladeshi children with MAM to compare the efficacy of alternative shelf-stable MDCF prototypes versus the current MDCF-2 formulation that is produced fresh each day. V4-16S rDNA amplicon and shotgun sequencing datasets will be generated from faecal DNA samples collected from each child enrolled in each group prior to, during, and after treatment to determine the abundances of MDCF-2-responsive bacterial taxa. Efficacy will be assessed by quantifying the change in representation of MDCF-2-responsive gut bacterial taxa after 4-weeks of treatment with freshly prepared MDCF-2 compared to their changes in abundance after treatment with the prototype MDCFs. Equivalence will be defined as the absence of a statistically significant difference, after 4-weeks of treatment, in the representation of faecal bacterial taxa associated with the response to MDCF-2 in participants receiving a test MDCF. DISCUSSION: This trial aims to establish acceptability and equivalence with respect to microbiota repair, of scalable, shelf-stable formulations of MDCF-2 in 8-12-month-old Bangladeshi children with moderate acute malnutrition. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05094024). The trial has been registered before starting enrolment on 23 October 2021.

BACKGROUND: Plant-based complementary foods (CFs) supply insufficient amount of nutrients to meet recommended nutrient intakes for 6-23-month-old children. The present study determined the nutritional quality of CFs formulated from blends of Nigerian yellow maize (Zea mays), soybean (Glycine max) and crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Three CFs were formulated; namely, maize flour (MF, 100:0% w/w), blends of maize and soybean flour (MSF, 72:28% w/w), and maize, soybean and crayfish flour (MSCF, 80:10:10% w/w). Nutritional quality was evaluated using analyses of chemical composition of CFs and of protein quality of complementary food diets. Data were compared by multivariate analysis of variance and significantly differentiated. Nine selected nutritional criteria were used to decide the CF that had best nutritional characteristics compared to MF and fortified wheat flour (FWMF). RESULTS: Total scores obtained from the selected nutritional criteria ranked MSCF, with total score of 15, as the lowest and thus it was considered to have the most desirable nutritional characteristics compared to MF, MSF and FWMF, which had respective total scores of 31, 22 and 20. CONCLUSION: Conclusively, MSCF may serve as a better alternative CF for MF, MSC and FWMF. The present study has produced a potential alternative cost-effective and adequate CF, formulated from crayfish (P. clarkii) supplementation of locally available blend of yellow maize (Z. mays) and soybean (G. max), for the poor human population, aiming to encourage the consumption of animal-sourced CF for alleviating the prevalence of childhood undernutrition. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Ensuring diet quality in the first 2 years of life is critical to preventing malnutrition and instilling healthy food preferences. Children's diet quality has changed little over time and inequalities by socioeconomic status, rural-urban residence, but also by food group may exist. Using data from the 2011, 2016 and 2019 demographic and health surveys (DHS), we estimated the prevalence and inequalities in the minimum diet diversity (MDD), minimum meal frequency (MMF) and minimum acceptable diet (MAD). We further assessed food group-level inequities. In 2019, only 13.5% of children 6-23 months of age met the MDD, 55% met the MMF and only 11% met the MAD indicator. Absolute and relative measures of inequality were calculated. Modest increases in MDD, MMF and MAD were observed over the past decade (2011-2019). These modest improvements were concentrated in limited geographical areas, among children in wealthier households, and urban residents. Unhealthy practices such as bottle-feeding and zero fruit and vegetables have been increasing; whereas, inequities in the consumption of nutrient-dense foods have widened. Nevertheless, children from the wealthiest quintile also failed to meet the MDD. Multisectoral efforts that span from diversifying the food supply, regulating the marketing of unhealthy foods, and promoting minimal processing of perishables (i.e., to extend shelf-life) are needed. Context-adapted behavioural change communication along with nutrition-sensitive social protection schemes are also needed to equitably improve the diet quality of children in Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the status quo and influencing factors of the first-time complementary food addition behavior of caregivers in the multi-ethnic background in the western rural areas. METHODS: In 2019, a multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling was used to selecting research subjects in western rural areas. A structured questionnaire was designed by ourselves with literature review and expert consultation method, and information such as sociodemographic characteristics, feeding knowledge, and complementary food addition of 1290 caregivers and infants were collected, ordered multi-classification Logistic regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of the first complementary food addition behavior of the Han nationality and the minority nationality. RESULTS: In the western rural areas, only 8.22% of the caregivers had better behavior of first complementary food addition, and 16.31% of the caregivers in the Han group had a good behavior of first complementary food addition. In the minority population, only 3.64% of infant caregivers had a good behavior of first complementary food addition. In Han, parents, as caregivers, had better first complementary food addition behavior than grandparents(OR=1.7829, 95% CI 1.1651-2.7283). Among ethnic minorities, education(OR=1.753, 95%CI 1.190-2.581), family fixed assets(OR=3.870, 95%CI 1.959-7.645)and feeding knowledge(OR=3.396, 95%CI 2.749-4.195) were the promoting factors for the first complementary food addition behavior. CONCLUSION: In western rural areas, caregivers' behavior of adding complementary food for the first time is generally poor.

OBJECTIVE: To explore latent classes of Yingyangbao(YYB) consumption among infants and young children in impoverished areas of Henan Province, and to analyze the relationship between these classes and anemia status. METHODS: We recruited 4433 children aged 6 to 24 months by multi-stage random sampling in 14 poverty-stricken counties of Henan Province between June and September 2018. We conducted hemoglobin concentration measurement among children and questionnaire survey among their caregivers. Then we used latent class analysis to classify the characteristics of YYB consumption among the children and two-level Logistic regression was used to explore relationship between YYB consumption and anemia status. RESULTS: The prevalence of anemia was 15.1% in poor areas of Henan Province in 2018. There were two latent classes of YYB consumption among children: the one was "effective consumption", latent class probability was 0.889; the other called "ineffective consumption", latent class probability was 0.111. Compared with effective consumption, children who never have consumed YYB(odds ratio(OR)=1.365, P<0.001) or were in "ineffective consumption" class(OR=1.265, P=0.034) were both positive related to anemia. CONCLUSION: Prevalence of anemia among children in impoverished areas has been significantly reduced since the launch of Program of Children's Nutrition Improvement in Impoverished Areas. Effective consumption is a key to ensuring YYB's anemia intervention effect.

Adequate nutrition is vital during infancy but the high cost of supplemented infant formulae has forced inhabitants of Central and West Africa to depend solely on low-nutrient gruels. Response Surface modelling was used to process a complementary food from roasted pearl millet and Soybean flour. A central composite design was adopted to study the effects of feed composition X1 (5.86-34.14%) and roasting temperature X2 (126-154 °C) on the micronutrients, functional, and sensory profiles of the different blends. The responses were significantly (p < 0.05) affected by the independent factors. For the vitamins in mg/100 g, the thiamin, riboflavin, folate, and ß-carotene content ranged from 0.17-0.33, 24-53.50, 1.32-2.29, and 7-22.98, respectively. For the minerals in mg/100 g, the zinc, calcium, potassium, and iron content ranged from 0.35-0.54, 39.5-62.75, 1.2-1.8, and 0.017-0.18, respectively. The viscosity, bulk density, swelling capacity, water absorption capacity, and pH ranged from 1577.5-942.5 cP, 0.74-0.79 g/cm3, 0.10-0.30 ml/g, 1.2-1.4 ml/g, and 4.70-5.70, respectively. The sensory scores were rated highly by the panelists. The optimum processing conditions with a desirability of 0.50 gave 29.28% and 130.39 °C feed composition and roasting temperature, respectively.

We show that the temperature at which foods and beverages are served impacts consumers' complementary purchases, defined as additional foods and beverages purchased for a consumption episode. Across a series of studies, including field studies and controlled laboratory experiments, we show that consumers choose more complementary food items when they consume or intend to consume a food or beverage served cold rather than hot. This occurs because cold consumables are expected to be less satiating compared to hot consumables. Serving temperatures that increase complementary purchasing may enhance the firm's bottom line, but could add unnecessary calories to the meal, and thus is of interest to both consumers and managers.

Inadequate child nutrition during the first '1000 days' is widespread in Cambodia, resulting in a high prevalence of child malnutrition. Access to processed complementary food in packages (PCFP) may support caretakers in improving diet of young children. This study aimed to evaluate the caretakers' preferences and willingness-to-pay (WTP) for PCFP in Cambodia. The study was conducted in urban and rural settings, involving 520 caretakers with children aged 7-24 months in Phnom Penh (urban) and Prey Veng (rural). Four PCFPs were included: a commercial brand, a social-commercial brand, a worldwide distributed fortified complementary food aid product (CSB++) and an experimental fortified rice-and-fish-based PCFP developed in Cambodia (WF-L). Sensory analysis was conducted for all products, stated WTP was assessed for three products (excluding CSB++) and actual WTP experiment was conducted on WF-L only. Our results show that overall, WF-L was preferred by the rural participants over food aid CSB++. Further improvements in the organoleptic qualities of WF-L should focus on consistency and taste. The participants were, on average, willing to pay 1,667 Cambodian riel (KHR, $0.4) and 1,192 KHR ($0.3) in urban and rural settings, respectively, for 35 g of WF-L. We also found that despite being nutritionally inadequate, most participants considered homemade porridge to be healthier, more practical and preferred by the children. Therefore improving the quality of homemade foods merits urgent consideration. When applying PCFP in nutrition programmes as a supplementary option to homemade complementary foods, locally produced products could be a more viable supplementary option than global food aid.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze complementary feeding status and issues among 6-23 month infants and young children(IYC) in poor rural regions in China to figure out actions further IYC nutrition in China. METHODS: Using 2018 monitoring data from Project of Children Nutrition Improvement in Poor Rural Regions, 6-23 months infants were sampled with the method of a combination of provincial stratification, multi-stage stratified cluster, PPS and random equidistant. Complementary feeding practices were collected by 24 hours diet recall method and and parental knowledge on IYC feeding was collected by KAP questionnaire. Complementary diet was analyzed according to the World Health Organization& apos; s definition of infant and young child feeding indicators. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of minimum acceptable diet(MAD). RESULTS: A total of 40 910 infants(boys 21 153, girls 19 757) completed the survey. The proportion of infants 6-8 months of age who receive solid, semi-solid foods was 83.8%, the percentage of IYC who get minimum dietary diversity(MDD), minimum meal frequency(MMF), and MAD was 67.8%, 71.4% and 39.7%, respectively. The age of months, mother& apos; s educational level and parent& apos; s nutrition and feeding knowledge had significant impact on the outcome of MAD. The OR for month& apos; s age were 1.990 and 1.905(P& lt; 0.001), OR for mother education level was 1. 545(P& lt; 0.001) and OR for parent knowledge were 1.114 and 1.346(P& lt; 0.001). CONCLUSION: Complementary feeding practices were poor in terms of the proportion of infants 6-8 months of age who introduced complementary foods, MDD, MMF and MAD in poor region of China.
