RESUMO

After 1952 the building of the Department of Stomatology was no more able to fulfill the increased demands, when the independent dental education had been started at the Medical University of Budapest. The leadership of the new Dental Faculty--officially founded in 1955--was looking for a solution to find a new building for clinical purposes. Finally in 1959 the new dental departments moved to a once residential building at Mikszáth Kálmán Square converted into dental clinics. This site had been in operation until the opening of the New Dental Education Center in 2007.

RESUMO

Among Benjamin Franklin's papers was a letter from a young British immigrant, R. C. Skinner, asking for a loan of only twenty dollars to help this young man begin the practice of dentistry in this country. Although we don't know what the great man's response was to this appeal, Skinner went on to achieve fame in his profession. He was the first dentist ever, in this country, to be appointed to a hospital staff; he established the first free dental clinic for the poor; and he authored the first book on dentistry ever published in America, earning him the title "The Father of American Dental Literature." From a newspaper advertisement of 1794, further information has been gleaned about Skinner's practice: he not only did conventional dentistry, but also supplied missing eyes, ears, noses and legs. This was a forerunner of the contemporary subspecialty of prosthodontics termed "maxillofacial prosthetics". An interesting list of Skinner's services and his fees for each, gives us a good picture of what dentistry was like in Colonial America.

RESUMO

As a contribution to the current discourse on improving the oral health of impoverished children by increasing their access to oral health services, this essay describes and examines an earlier attempt to accomplish a very similar goal: the philanthropically and publicly funded children's dental clinics that were responsible for close to half of all oral health services delivered to US children during the first half of the 20th century. As an explanation of why these clinics were established and why they proliferated, the essay argues they met 4 criteria essential to successful public health programs aimed at children: they had a clearly understood and largely accepted fiscal and social utility; they provided services that parents could easily understand as benefiting their children; they serviced a broad enough segment of the population to earn them significant social and political support; and, by meeting a variety of the professional needs of oral health care providers, they established a relationship of enlightened self interest with a group whose support or, at least, lack of opposition was crucial to their survival.

RESUMO

The postgraduate Eastman Dental Clinic and Institute of Dental Surgery were established in 1947. However their roots go back to Rochester in New York State where George Eastman was born in 1854. George Eastman literally changed the image of the world by creating popular photography. In 1914 he was driven by his painful neglected dentition to seek the help of Harvey Jacob Burkhart (pictured, right) who was considered to be the best dentist in the state. Burkhart provided him, for the first time in his adult life, with comfortable dentures, which not only restored function but also his appearance. George Eastman was overwhelmed with his new found comfort and social confidence.

RESUMO

Since 1919 the clinic was directed and developed by Professor József Szabó (1874 to 1937). His book entitled The Practical Dentistry appeared also in Italian and Spanish. His collaborator was Professor Henrik Salamon (1865 to 1944) distinguished prosthetic, orthodontist and dental historian. The professorate was taken over in spring of 1944 by Professor Károly Balogh (1895 to 1973) who organized the independent training of dentists. The Clinic of Stomatology became the basis of the Faculty of Dental Science of the Budapest Medical University and of the four dental clinics operating since 1959. Today the building of the Clinic of Stomatology serves for the operating of the Oral Surgery and Dental Clinic.

RESUMO

The Dental Clinic of the Budapest University was established 100 years ago. The prehistory and the history of the first three decades of the clinic is closely attached to the course of life of Professor József Arkövy (1952 to 1922). Arkövy acquired a medical and dental master certificate in 1876. Between 1881 and 1890 he directs a private dental clinic. This became the basis of the University Dental Clinic opened in 1890 which disposed of a treating hall with 10 dental chairs, a narcosis chamber and a class room. In 1908, the clinic moves into a new building planned for such purpose and its name becomes Clinic of Stomatology. In the new clinic the departments of surgery, conserving dentistry and prosthetic dentistry became separated and there was a bedpatient department as well. Arkövy retired in 1920.

RESUMO

Between 1970 and 1988, 8,657 out of 102,113 out-patients at the Clinics of Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Szeged had stomatooncological illness. Documentation of the patients is carried out on data-forms suitable for computer processing. One of the most important tasks of stomatooncology consists in effecting screening test in which the basic dental care has a decisive role. It is a deficiency sign of the oncological view that even the precancerous oral cavity conditions and conspicuous tumors don't get timely into the centres, and, also, treatments are carried out without histological biopsy. Since 1973, 4,038 patients have been treated with cryotherapeutic methods and such method did deemed primary independent treatment in case of well selected patient stocks. The oncological complex therapy has to be followed by looking after. Yearly 1,500 to 2,000 check ups are effected.

RESUMO

The Edinburgh Dental Dispensary began in 1860 as a private charity to provide free treatment for the poor and to teach students. In 1862 the dispensary became a public charity in new premises with a committee of managers. Dental students were admitted in 1864. By 1867 the annual number of patient attendances was about 4,000 and the mainstay of treatment was extraction. Housekeepers were the only support staff. The dispensary was constantly impecunious; in 1869 the managers considered discontinuing the service. In February 1879, following the 1878 Dentists Act, the dispensary was merged into the new Edinburgh Dental Hospital and School.
