Antonio Candido, importante crítico literário brasileiro, fundou sua perspectiva teórica para a análise literária na Antropologia. Através de autores como Malinowski, RadcliffeBrown e Lévi-Strauss e da discussão da questão da arte nas sociedades ditas primitivas, o autor elabora uma visão da literatura como um fenômeno universal que corresponderia a necessidades humanas básicas, de contato com o mundo da imaginação, de devaneio e sonho diurno, que seriam indispensáveis para o equilíbrio psíquico dos indivíduos eda coletividade.
