Discussing the Brazilian intellectual formation from the period of colonization and, for that purpose, the context and intellectual formation in Portugal, is intended to reflect on the shock that occurs at the end of the nineteenth century in Brazil between new sectors on the rise, linked to commercial and industrial activities, and the old agrarian interests by the dispute of political and economic power. Seeks to demonstrate how such disputewill also occur in the sphere of ideas as dispute for the hegemony of intellectual production in time for the formation and consolidation of modern scientific thought in opposition to humanismclassicista. In this context, positivism represent, in Brazil, the interests of groups that are the result of urbanization and capitalist development seeking in scientific thinking ways ofcontestation and pathway projection and social recognition, in opposition to the established elites traditionally linked to agrarian interests and estamental social order, holding on to defend the perpetuation of humanistic thought and bookish erudition.(AU)
