This essay shows how the term populism, emptied of its original heuristic value, as constructed by Marxism and the sociology of modernization, and dissociated from any particular reference to an specific period or social system, has become an ideological tool in the political struggles for the representation of true democracy in Latin America. Moreover, it is argued that the main contrasts between leftist regimes today do not refer to greater or lesser emphasis on participative or representative democracy, nor to the degree of institutionalization of their party systems but to the capacity, complexity and strength of the states´ foundations. In this line of thought, differences between regimes can be best explained by path dependence dynamics particularly with reference to the legacy of the national developmental period. The case of Venezuela is analyzed to illustrate the arguments.(AU)
