This dissertation aims to analytically reconstruct an intellectual sequence of studies in Brazilian sociology on the issue of violence in a personal social order, taking as the axis of the research the work of Maria Sylvia de Carvalho Franco Homens livres na ordem escravocrata (1969). Based on the research of Franco, the issue is analyzed in three different moments of the Brazilian social thought the so-called essays of interpretation of Brazil in the 1920s and 1930s, the newly institutionalized sociology of the 1950s and 1960s and the contemporary social sciences including the sociology of violence. Going through these three moments, the research seeks cognitive continuities and discontinuities among the studies above that could enable reconnect the structures about the sociological characterization of the main issue. The hypothesis is that this cognitive sequence designs and offers a sociological approach to the problematic of the nexus of meaning between violence and personalized social order in Brazil, taking into account in the theoretical and methodological framework the articulation between the main principles of social coordination social solidarity, public authority and material interests. Although such dimensions receive different emphasis and intensities from one work to another, the authors converge to give priority to the homo sociologicus explanatory, in other words, converge to understand violence in the solidarity dimension. Against the hegemonic sense assumed by the social sciences in Brazil, whose expertise has tended to separate these three dimensions into autonomous disciplines and with little contact with one another, to recover this intellectual sequence is an heuristic value, also for allowing the reintroduction of an overall perspective of the social process in the analysis of violence that enables dealing with the complexity of the object in its inner differences.(AU)
