ABSTRACT

The ability to manipulate the twisting topology of van der Waals structures offers a new degree of freedom through which to tailor their electrical and optical properties. The twist angle strongly affects the electronic states, excitons and phonons of the twisted structures through interlayer coupling, giving rise to exotic optical, electric and spintronic behaviours1-5. In twisted bilayer graphene, at certain twist angles, long-range periodicity associated with moiré patterns introduces flat electronic bands and highly localized electronic states, resulting in Mott insulating behaviour and superconductivity3,4. Theoretical studies suggest that these twist-induced phenomena are common to layered materials such as transition-metal dichalcogenides and black phosphorus6,7. Twisted van der Waals structures are usually created using a transfer-stacking method, but this method cannot be used for materials with relatively strong interlayer binding. Facile bottom-up growth methods could provide an alternative means to create twisted van der Waals structures. Here we demonstrate that the Eshelby twist, which is associated with a screw dislocation (a chiral topological defect), can drive the formation of such structures on scales ranging from the nanoscale to the mesoscale. In the synthesis, axial screw dislocations are first introduced into nanowires growing along the stacking direction, yielding van der Waals nanostructures with continuous twisting in which the total twist rates are defined by the radii of the nanowires. Further radial growth of those twisted nanowires that are attached to the substrate leads to an increase in elastic energy, as the total twist rate is fixed by the substrate. The stored elastic energy can be reduced by accommodating the fixed twist rate in a series of discrete jumps. This yields mesoscale twisting structures consisting of a helical assembly of nanoplates demarcated by atomically sharp interfaces with a range of twist angles. We further show that the twisting topology can be tailored by controlling the radial size of the structure.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the clinical value of extended radical resection for stage pT3 gallbladder cancer (GBC). Methods: The clinical and pathological data of 323 patients with stage pT3 GBC who received regional radical resection or extended radical resection in 7 domestic hepatobiliary centers in China from January 2013 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. The propensity score matching method was used to select 36 cases in each of the regional radical resection group (group A1) and the extended radical resection group (group B1). The surgical indicators and overall survival rates of the two groups were compared, and prognostic factors were analyzed. Results: The number of positive lymph nodes [2(0,3)] and the total number of lymph nodes removed [3(1,4)] in group B1 were both higher than those in group A1 [1(0,1), 4(2,7)] (all P<0.05). There was no significant difference in other clinical and pathological factors between the two groups (all P>0.05). The 1, 3, and 5-year survival rates of group A1 were 75%, 44%, and 29%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of group B1 of 50%, 15%, and 11% (χ(2)=11.311, all P<0.001). Extensive radical resection (HR=2.161, 95%CI: 1.222-3.821), hepatic parenchymal invasion (HR=2.324, 95%CI: 1.305-4.139), positive lymph node rate ≥1/3 (HR=2.927, 95%CI: 1.641-5.220), and ⅢB/ⅣB staging (HR=3.325, 95%CI: 1.750-6.320) are risk factors for the prognosis of GBC patients (all P<0.05), of which extended radical resection (HR=1.969, 95%CI: 1.083-3.581) was an independent risk factor for prognosis (P<0.05). When the ratio of positive lymph nodes was<1/3 and the tumor invaded the hepatic parenchyma, the overall survival rate of group B1 was significantly lower than that of group A1 (all P<0.05). Conclusions: The overall survival rate in patients with stage pT3 GBC whose lymph node positive rate<1/3 and/or hepatic parenchymal invaded cannot be improved by extended radical resection. Extended radical resection is an independent risk factor for patient prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted extensive attention in the catalysis field because of their remarkable catalytic activity, gratifying stability, excellent selectivity, and 100% atom utilization. With atomically dispersed metal active sites, Fe-N-C SACs can mimic oxidase by activating O2 into reactive oxygen species, O2- • radicals. Taking advantages of this property, single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) can become a great impetus to develop novel biosensors. Herein, the performance of Fe-N-C SACs as oxidase-like nanozymes is explored. Besides, the Fe-N-C SAzymes are applied in biosensor areas to evaluate the activity of acetylcholinesterase based on the inhibition toward nanozyme activity by thiols. Moreover, this SAzymes-based biosensor is further used for monitoring the amounts of organophosphorus compounds.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare the efficacy of modified pancreaticojejunostomy with traditional pancreaticojejunostomy following pancreaticoduodenectomy, and to investigate the risk factors of postoperative pancreatic fistula. Methods: Clinical data of 68 patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy between October 2017 and October 2018 at the Second Department of Biliary Tract Surgery, Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital was retrospectively collected and analyzed.According to the method of pancreaticojejunostomy, the patients were divided into two groups: modified pancreaticojejunostomy group (34 patients) and traditional pancreaticojejunostomy group (34 patients). There were 18 males and 16 females, aged (60.4±9.6) years of modified pancreaticojejunostomy groups; there were 17 males and 18 females, aged (58.9±10.9) years of traditional pancreaticojejunostomy group. The major postoperative complications such as pancreatic fistula were compared between the two groups, and the risk factors of postoperative pancreatic fistula were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: All of the 68 operations were successfully completed. The overall incidence of postoperative complications was 51.5% (35/68). The incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula was 13.2% (9/68), of which all were cases of grade B.There were 16 patients (23.5%) occurred with abdominal infection, and 11 patients (16.2%) occurred with delayed gastric emptying, including 1 case of grade A, 1 case of grade B and 9 cases of grade C.And 9 patients (13.2%) occurred with postoperative bleeding was, including 2 cases of mild bleeding, 5 cases of moderate bleeding, and 2 cases of severe bleeding.Biliary leakage occurred in one patient (1.5%) and chylous leakage occurred in two patients (2.9%). The modified pancreaticojejunostomy could significantly reduce the incidence of postoperative bleeding compared with control group (χ(2)=4.610, P=0.032). And there were no significant differences for other postoperative complications between the two groups (all P>0.05). According to the results of univariate analysis: age, intraoperative bleeding and diameter of pancreatic tube were related factors affecting postoperative pancreatic fistula (P=0.025, 0.019, 0.017, respectively). The results of multivariate analysis showed that intraoperative bleeding>400 ml and diameter of pancreatic tube <3 mm were independent risk factors of pancreatic fistula following pancreaticoduodenectomy (P=0.025, 0.008, respectively). Conclusion: The modified pancreaticojejunostomy is feasible with advantages of reducing postoperative bleeding following pancreaticoduodenectomy.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To discuss the rationality of stage pT3 in the AJCC 8(th) TNM criteria of gallbladder carcinoma. Methods: A retrospective study was performed to analyze the clinical and pathological data of 88 patients with pT3 gallbladder carcinoma admitted to Department of Second Biliary Surgery of Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital, affiliated to Naval Medical University from May 2013 to September 2018.pT3 stage tumors were divided into two groups: (1) pT3a stage: tumors had penetrated serosa but not directly invaded liver and/or an adjacent organ or structure; (2) pT3b stage: tumor penetrating serosa and directly invaded liver and/or an adjacent organ or structure. There were 45 patients with pT3a stage, including 15 males and 30 females, aged 36 to 80 years, with a median age of 59 years; 43 patients with pT3b, including 24 males and 19 females, aged 41 to 78 years old, median aged 63 years old.Patients with pT3a and pT3b were further divided into two groups respectively: radical resection group and extended radical resection group according to surgical radicalization. Independent sample t-test was used for comparison between two groups with normal distribution measurement data. Wilcoxon rank sum test was used between groups of non-normally distributed measurement data.The comparison of the count data was performed by χ(2) test or Fisher exact probability method. Survival analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier method, and survival rate was compared using Log-rank test. Results: (1)Serum total bilirubin(15.6(90.3)mmol/L), albumin(40.2(4.8)mmol/L), and CA19-9(132.90(455.78)U/ml) levels in pT3b patients were higher than that in pT3a patients(10.2(6.8)mmol/L, 41.8(4.9)mmol/L, 14.35(36.27)U/ml), respectively(Z=-3.816, -1.966, -3.739, all P<0.05),postoperative complication rate in pT3b patients(24.4%) was higher than that in pT3a patients(8.9%)(P<0.05),postoperative hospital stay(12(7)days) and overall hospital stay((26±17)days) of pT3b patients were longer than that of pT3a patients((10±5) days and (19±7)days) (P<0.05). (2) The 1-, 3-, 5-year survival rates of pT3b and pT3a patients were 53%,22%,22% and 69%, 46%,38%,and the median survival time was 13 months and 26 months, respectively. The difference in survival rates between the two groups was statistically significant(χ(2)=5.117, P=0.024). (3)The 1-, 3-year survival rates of extended radical resection group(n=19) and radical resection group(n=24) in the pT3b stage were 73%, 36% and 28%, 7%, respectively.The survival time was 20 months and 9 months,respectively,and the difference in survival rates between the two groups was statistically significant(χ(2)=4.976, P=0.026). Conclusions: pT3 gallbladder carcinoma could be further subdivided into pT3a stage and pT3b stage based on the TNM criteria of AJCC 8(th) gallbladder carcinoma. Extended radical resection for pT3b gallbladder carcinoma should be further considered after comprehensive assessment of the patient's basic condition and surgical tolerance.

ABSTRACT

Rational design of high active and robust nonprecious metal catalysts with excellent catalytic efficiency in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is extremely vital for making the water splitting process more energy efficient and economical. Among these noble metal-free catalysts, transition-metal-based nanomaterials are considered as one of the most promising OER catalysts due to their relatively low-cost intrinsic activities, high abundance, and diversity in terms of structure and morphology. Herein, a facile sugar-blowing technique and low-temperature phosphorization are reported to generate 3D self-supported metal involved carbon nanostructures, which are termed as Co2 P@Co/nitrogen-doped carbon (Co2 P@Co/N-C). By capitalizing on the 3D porous nanostructures with high surface area, homogeneously dispersed active sites, the intimate interaction between active sites, and 3D N-doped carbon, the resultant Co2 P@Co/N-C exhibits satisfying OER performance superior to CoO@Co/N-C, delivering 10 mA cm-2 at overpotential of 0.32 V. It is worth noting that in contrast to the substantial current density loss of RuO2 , Co2 P@Co/N-C shows much enhanced catalytic activity during the stability test and a 1.8-fold increase in current density is observed after stability test. Furthermore, the obtained Co2 P@Co/N-C can also be served as an excellent nonprecious metal catalyst for methanol and glucose electrooxidation in alkaline media, further extending their potential applications.

ABSTRACT

Previous research has showed that miR-99a-5p was a tumor suppressor. The aim of our study was to explore the effect of miR-99a-5p on the vitality and proliferation, migration together with the invasion of oral tumor cells via inhibiting the expression of NOX4. QRT-PCR and Western blot were applied to examine the expression level of miR-99a-5p and NOX4 in human oral tumorous and adjacent tissues. Dual luciferase reporter gene assay was applied to confirm that miR-99a-5p negatively regulated directly on NOX4 in TSCC1 cells. Cell transfection and lentiviral vectors were used to up-regulate expression of miR-99a-5p and NOX4, respectively. Cell proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis and invasion along with the migration in different groups were assessed using MTT assay, colony formation assay, the flow cytometry, transwell assay and the wound healing assay, respectively. MiR-99a-5p was under-expressed in human oral tumor, while NOX4 was over-expressed. There was a negative relationship between miR-99a-5p and NOX4. Up-regulating miR-99a-5p or down-regulating NOX4 suppressed the vitality, proliferation, migration together with invasion of TSCC1 cells. MiR-99a-5p affected the vitality and proliferation, migration together with the invasion of oral tumor cells through targeting NOX4.

ABSTRACT

Testing for BRCA1 mutation has important clinical implications such as identifying risk of second primary cancers and risk of cancer in the family. This study seeks to quantify the risk of having BRCA1 mutation in female breast cancer patients with triple-negative phenotype compared with those with other phenotypes. We undertook a search of MEDLINE and EMBASE databases for relevant studies through 10 May 2013. Outcomes were calculated and reported as risk ratio and risk difference. 12 studies comprising 2533 breast cancer patients were included in the analysis. It was found that almost all eligible studies were performed on high-risk population with breast cancer. By analyzing the incidence rates of BRCA1 mutation in patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and non-TNBC, our meta-analysis provides a relative risk of 5.65 [95% confidence interval (CI), 4.15-7.69] and risk difference of 0.22 (95% CI, 0.15-0.29). This implies that, in selected population with high-risk features, women with TNBC are approximately five and a half times more likely to have BRCA1 mutation compared with non-TNBC phenotype, and approximately two in nine women with TNBC harbor BRCA1 mutation. Triple-negative phenotype significantly increases the risk of having BRCA1 mutation in high-risk breast cancer patients compared with non-TNBC.

ABSTRACT

Phytosterols are intended for use as a novel food ingredient with plasma cholesterol-lowering activity. Although phytosterols are naturally present in the normal diet, daily consumption is insufficient to ensure plasma cholesterol-lowering levels. Therefore, phytosterols may be added to the diets to achieve the desired cholesterol-lowering activity. A subchronic laying hen safety study was conducted to examine if high-dose phytosterols could affect the safety of hens. Three hundred sixty 21-wk-old Hy-Line Brown laying hens were randomly assigned to 5 groups with 6 replicates of 12 birds each; after 3 wk, birds were fed diets supplemented with 0, 20, 80, 400, and 800 mg/kg of phytosterols for 12 wk. Throughout the study, clinical observations and laying performance were measured. At the end of the study, birds were subjected to a full postmortem examination: blood samples were taken for clinical pathology, selected organs were weighed, and specified tissues were taken for subsequent histological examination. No treatment-related changes that were considered to be of toxicological significance were observed. Therefore, a nominal phytosterol concentration of 800 mg/kg was considered to be the no-observed-adverse-effect level.

This paper aims to evaluate residential air conditioning systems' performance enhancement and optimization by adopting a novel functionalized Al2O3 (FAl2O3)-Polyolester (POE) nanolubricant. Comprehensive discussions were conducted on key performance parameters, including heat absorption, compressor work, cooling capacity, coefficient of performance (COP), and power consumption. Novel FAl2O3 nanoparticles were dispersed into the POE lubricant using a two-step method. The findings reveal that FAl2O3-POE nanolubricant exhibits superior heat absorption compared to pure POE. Heat absorption decreases with an increased initial refrigerant charge, while cooling capacity performance improves with an increased initial refrigerant charge. The COP shows an increasing trend at all concentrations of FAl2O3-POE nanolubricant when operating with R32. FAl2O3-POE/R32 demonstrates an enhanced range of 3.12%-32.26% for COP. The results suggest that applying novel FAl2O3-POE nanolubricant with R32 can reduce electrical power consumption by 13.79%-19.35%. The central composite design (CCD) offers an optimal condition for FAl2O3-POE nanolubricant with a concentration of 0.11 vol%, an initial refrigerant charge of 0.442 kg, resulting in a COP of 3.982, a standard error of 0.019, and a desirability of 1.0.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To survey the conduction and evaluate the effectiveness of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in China mainland. Methods: In a questionnaire-based survey, we retrospectively reviewed the application of ECMO in children's hospital and general hospital in China mainland to summarize and analyze the categories of diseases and prognosis of children treated with ECMO therapy. Results: By December 31, 2017, a total of 23 hospitals using ECMO, including 22 tertiary referral hospitals and 1 secondary hospital, among which 16 were children's hospitals and 7 were general hospitals. Thirty-seven ECMO equipment was available. A total of 518 patients treated with ECMO, within whom 323 (62.4%) successfully weaned from ECMO and 262 (50.6%) survived to discharge. Among 375 pediatric patients, 233 (62.1%) were successfully weaned from ECMO and 186 (49.6%) survived to discharge. Among 143 newborn patients, 90 (62.9%) successfully weaned from ECMO, 76 (53.1%) survived to discharge. ECMO was applied in veno-arterial (VA) mode to 501 (96.7%) patients, veno-venous (VV) mode to 14 (2.7%) patients, and VV-VA conversion mode to 3 (0.6%) patients. Sixty-nine patients required extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), including 20 newborn patients (29.0%) and 38 pediatric patients (71.0%), who were all with cardiovascular disease. Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (26/61), persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) (12/61), and meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) (11/61) are the most common pulmonary diseases in newborn patients; among whom, infants with PPHN had highest survival rate (10/12), followed by MAS (9/11). Among newborn patients with cardiovascular diseases, those who admitted were after surgery for congenital cardiac disease were the most common (54/82), while those with septic shock had the highest survival rate (2/3). In pediatric pulmonary diseases, acute respiratory distress syndrome was the most common (42/93), while plastic bronchitis was with the highest survival rate (4/4), followed by viral pneumonia (13/16). Among pediatric cardiovascular diseases, congenital cardiac defect was the most common (124/282), while fulminant myocarditis had the highest survival rate (54/77). Conclusion: The application of ECMO as a rescue therapy for children with severe cardiopulmonary failure has dramatically developed in China mainland.

Objective To study the effect of schistosomiasis transmission interruption model based on intensive agriculture in hilly endemic areas, so as to provide the reference for the similar endemic areas. Methods Based on the development of intensive agriculture in Guanghan City, a comprehensive demonstration area of schistosomiasis control with measures such as new rural construction, hardening ditches, the adjustment of industrial structure and water remediation measures was constructed. Jinhua, Shiguan and Hongyan villages were chosen as the evaluation sites to comparatively analyze the indexes of intensive agriculture and schistosomiasis control effects. Results Compared with the demonstration area before construction, in 2014, the harden rates of ditches and village roads were increased by 49.57% and 39.33% respectively; and the proportion of agricultural machinery increased by 25%. The positive rate of serological tests of schistosomiasis was decreased by 81.74%. The Oncomelania hupensis snail area was decreased from 2.44 hm2 (2007) to 0 (2014). The awareness rate of schistosomiasis control knowledge and correct behavior rate of the residents were increased from 51.28% and 90.85% to 91.29% and 97.69% respectively. The experience of the demonstration area ensured the entire Guanghan District achieved the schistosomiasis transmission interruption criterion at the end of 2014. Conclusions The schistosomiasis control model of intensive agriculture combined with other comprehensive measures has a good effect on interrupting the endemic of schistosomiasis, and it can realize the sustainable development of the agricultural economy and schistosomiasis control.

ABSTRACT

China's prevention and control of parasitic diseases has made remarkable achievements. However, the prevalence and transmission of parasitic diseases is impacted by the complicated natural and social factors of environment, natural disasters, population movements, and so on. Therefore, there are still the risks of the outbreak of emergency parasitic diseases affairs, which may affect the control effectiveness of parasitic diseases and endanger the social stability seriously. In this article, we aim at the analysis of typical cases of emergency parasitic disease affairs and their impacts on public health security in China in recently years, and we also elaborate the disposal characteristics of emergency parasitic disease affairs, and propose the establishment of response system to emergency parasitic disease affairs in China, including the organizational structure and response flow path, and in addition, point out that, in the future, we should strengthen the system construction and measures of the response system to emergency parasitic disease affairs, so as to control the risk and harm of parasitic disease spread as much as possible and to realize the early intervention and proper disposal of emergency parasitic disease affairs.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the pharmacokinetics and relative bioavailability of praziquantel injection in buffaloes in contrast to praziquantel tablet. Methods A single oral administration of praziquantel tablet at a dose of 20 mg/kg or intramuscular administration of praziquantel injection at a dose of 10 mg/kg was performed in six healthy adult buffalos according to a twoperiod crossover design. The praziquantel concentration in plasma was determined by a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated by non-compartmental analysis. Results The main pharmacokinetic parameters of praziquantel tablet were as follows: Tmax = (0.60±0.29)h, Cmax = (0.57±0.37)µg/ml, T1/2ß = (0.70±0.42)h, AUC = (0.80±0.70) (µg/ml)·h. The main pharmacokinetic parameters of praziquantel injection were as follows: Tmax = (0.65± 0.49)h, Cmax = (3.82±1.17)µg/ml, T1/2ß = (1.00±0.73)h, AUC = (1.61±0.89) (µg/ml)·h. The relative bioavailability of praziquantel injection was 402.5% in contrast to praziquantel tablet. Conclusion The praziquantel injection has pharmacokinetic characteristics of rapid absorption, high bioavailability and extensive distribution, and the clinical recommended dosage of praziquantel injection is 10 mg/kg.

ABSTRACT

Endonuclease III (endoIII; nth gene product) of Escherichia coli is known to be a DNA repair enzyme having a relatively broad specificity for damaged pyrimidine bases of DNA. Here, we describe the cloning and characterization of the cDNA and the gene for a mouse homologue (mNthl1/mNth1) of endoIII. The cDNA was cloned from a mouse T-cell cDNA library with a probe prepared by PCR using the library and specific PCR primers synthesized based on the reported information of partial amino acid sequences of bovine NTHL1/NTH1 and of EST Data Bases. The cDNA is 1025 nucleotides long and encodes a protein consisting of 300 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 33.6 kDa. The amino acid sequence exhibits significant homologies to those of endoIII and its prokaryotic and eukaryotic homologues. The recombinant mNthl1 with a hexahistidine tag was overexpressed in a nth::cmr nei::Kmr double mutant of E. coli, and purified to apparent homogeneity. The enzyme showed thymine glycol DNA glycosylase, urea DNA glycosylase and AP lyase activities. Northern blot analysis indicated that mNthl1 mRNA is about 1 kb and is expressed ubiquitously. A 15 kb DNA fragment containing the mNthl1 gene was cloned from a mouse genomic library and sequenced. The gene consists of six exons and five introns spanning 6.09 kb. The sequenced 5' flanking region lacks a typical TATA box, but contains a CAAT box and putative binding sites for several transcription factors such as Ets, Sp1, AP-1 and AP-2. The mNthl1 gene was shown to lie immediately adjacent to the tuberous sclerosis 2 (Tsc2) gene in a 5'-to-5' orientation by sequence analysis and was assigned to chromosome 17A3 by in situ hybridization.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To compare best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macular thickness (CMT) after 532-nm subthreshold laser grid photocoagulation and threshold laser grid photocoagulation for the treatment of diabetic macular oedema (DME). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-three patients (46 eyes) with binocular DME were enroled in this study. The two eyes of each patient were divided into a subthreshold photocoagulation group and a threshold photocoagulation group. The eyes of the subthreshold group underwent 532-nm patter scan laser system (PASCAL) 50% end point subthreshold laser grid photocoagulation therapy, whereas the threshold photocoagulation group underwent short-pulse grid photocoagulation with a 532-nm PASCAL system. BCVA and CMT were assessed in all patients before treatment, 7 days after treatment, and 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. RESULTS: After grid photocoagulation, the mean BCVA improved in both the subthreshold group, and the threshold group, and the two groups did not differ statistically significantly from each other. Similarly, the macular oedema diminished in both groups after treatment, and the two groups did not differ statistically significantly from each other with regard to CMT. CONCLUSION: Both 532-nm subthreshold laser grid photocoagulation and threshold laser grid photocoagulation can improve the visual acuity and reduce CMT in DME patients.

ABSTRACT

Coronary heart disease mortality is four times higher in Lithuanian compared to Swedish middle-aged men. Using the same equipment (Acuson XP10 with 5 MHz linear transducer) and staff, we compared the amount of atherosclerosis in carotid and femoral arteries in 100 randomly sampled 50-year-old men in each of the cities Vilnius, Lithuania and Linköping, Sweden. Atherosclerotic plaques were more abundant in Vilnius men compared to Linköping men (53 versus 28% in the common carotid artery, 73 versus 37% in the common femoral artery, P < 0.001 for both). Plaques were thicker and more extended in arteries of Vilnius men, and an ultrasound atherosclerosis score was higher in both carotid and femoral arteries (P < 0.001 for all). More Vilnius men had a maximal intima-media thickness of the common femoral artery above 1 mm (P<0.005). Stiffness in the common carotid artery was higher in Vilnius men (P<0.001). In a linear regression model of the pooled material, after adjustment for city was made, smoking, systolic blood pressure, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and beta-carotene (inversely) significantly contributed to a high total ultrasound score (r2 = 0.32). These findings show that the higher coronary mortality noted in Lithuanian men goes together with a higher prevalence of early peripheral atherosclerosis.

ABSTRACT

Three different synthetic routes to the fourth-generation (G4) macromonomers 4, 6, and 9 for Suzuki polycondensation (SPC) are described and compared in their efficiency. Monomer 9 was selected the best as judged by the number and feasibility of synthetic steps and purification behavior and could be prepared in a 15 g scale. SPC of the monomers 4, 6, and 9 gave the novel poly(para-phenylene)s 17, 18, and 19 with pendant G4 dendrons at every other repeat unit. SPC was optimized for 9 and the diboronic acid ester counterpart 16 which led to polymer 19 with a molecular weight of up to Mn=76,000, Mw=63,9000 (GPC versus polystyrene). High molecular weight is most likely to be obtained for the attempted stoichiometry 9:16 = 1.000:(0.995-1.005).

Langmuir monolayers are formed from an amphiphilically decorated poly(para-phenylene), which indicates that its hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts segregate lengthwise along the polymer backbone in this nanometer-sized cylinder as illustrated in A. This polymer differs from known amphiphiles in that it consists of a linear, covalently bound sequence of "little" amphiphiles. It is much more rigid than common "polysoaps", which should increase its potential to aggregate, for example, into channels.
