ABSTRACT

Fermented soybean grain (FSBG) is considered improper to use as a protein source in animal nutrition, since it is assumed that defects cause changes on its chemical composition and favor mycotoxins production, but chemical composition data does not support this theory and in vivo studies are missing. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of FSBG in feedlot lamb diets. For that, two types of FSBG (partially fermented and completely fermented, PFSBG and CFSBG) and one standard soybean grain (SSBG) were obtained and evaluated alone or as a component of experimental diets by in vitro and in vivo studies, where FSBG totally replaced SSBG in feedlot lamb diets, which was included in the experimental diets in 17.4% on dry matter basis as protein source. Before the studies, both soybeans were sent to a specialized laboratory where no mycotoxins were detected. As a result, lower DM and carbohydrate contents but higher crude protein, fiber, and indigestible NDF contents were measured in CFSBG than in SSBG. Furthermore, both types of FSBG showed lower digestibility in vitro dry matter (IVDMD) than SSBG when evaluated separately; however, when evaluated in experimental diets, the substitution of SSBG for FSBG did not affect IVDMD. It was also observed that FSBG also had less rumen-degradable protein than SSBG (mean 47.9 vs 86.4%). In the in vivo study, FSBG did not affect nutrient intake, apparent digestibility, or animal performance (i.e., average daily gain and carcass gain). Thus, mycotoxins-free FSBG may be an alternative to totally replace SSBG in feedlot lamb diets.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Perform a cross-cultural adaptation of the Pasero Opioid-induced Sedation Scale to the Brazilian setting. METHOD: This is a methodological study using Beaton's framework, which consists in six stages: translation, synthesis of translations, re-translation, expert committee, pre-test, and sending the adapted version of the instrument to the author of the original. The study was carried out from April to December 2021. The research was conducted in a private hospitalin the city of São Paulo, in the adult hospitalization and critical care units. It was approved by the research ethics committee. RESULTS: After translation, translation synthesis and back-translation steps, the version was evaluated by the expert committee, requiring two rounds to obtain acceptable CVI values above 0.80. In the pre-test phase, the scale was well understood, with a CVI of 0.98. CONCLUSION: The scale was adapted for the Brazilian context; however, further studies will be needed to analyze validity and reliability evidence.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: New-onset chronic pain has been acknowledged as part of the post-COVID-19 condition. However, available fine-grained data about its clinical phenotype, trajectories and main associated characteristics remain scarce. We described the distinct temporal evolutions of post-COVID-19 pain and their epidemiological and phenotypical features. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study enrolled post-COVID-19 condition patients (i.e. who had persisting COVID-19-related symptoms over 30 days since their first positive laboratory test), whose COVID-19 diagnosis had been supported by RT-PCR of oral/nasopharyngeal swab or serology. They underwent in-person evaluations with a structured interview, pain and quality-of-life-related questionnaires and thorough physical examination. Chronic pain (CP) and probable neuropathic pain (NP) were defined according to IASP criteria. RESULTS: The present study included 226 individuals, 177 (78.3%) of whom presented over 3 months since their first COVID-19 symptom. New-onset pain occurred in 170 (75.2%) participants and was chronic in 116 (68.2%). A chronic course was associated with COVID-19-related hospitalization, new-onset fatigue, lower cognitive performance, motor and thermal sensory deficits, mood and sleep impairments and overall lower quality-of-life levels. Probable NP occurred in only 7.6% new-onset pain patients, and was associated with pain chronification, new-onset fatigue, motor and thermal sensory deficits, mechanical allodynia and lower rates of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Previous CP was reported by 86 (38.1%) individuals and had aggravated after the infection in 66 (76.7%) of them, which was associated with orthostatic hypotension. CONCLUSIONS: Post-COVID pain phenomena follow different paths, which are associated with specific clinical and epidemiological features, and possibly distinct underlying mechanisms, prognostic and therapeutic implications. SIGNIFICANCE: COVID-19-related pain usually follows a chronic course and is non-neuropathic. Its possible courses and phenotypes are associated with distinct clinical and epidemiological features. This suggests differing underlying mechanisms, which may have significant prognostic and therapeutic implications.

ABSTRACT

Understanding the different scales of temporal variability is crucial to improve the knowledge of the biogeochemical processes in the land-ocean interface. In this study, we evaluated the role of continental runoff and intrusion of oceanic water masses in the trophic state of the Bay of Santa Catarina Island (BSCI) over the last three decades (1993-2019) by using multiple biogeochemical and eutrophication assessment tools. The sub-watersheds of BSCI showed high concentrations of nutrients, fecal coliform and chlorophyll-a, directly correlated to the number of inhabitants. Worst-case scenarios were found in summer and fall seasons due to sewage inputs caused by mass tourism and the inefficiency or even absence of treatment systems, boosted by strong rainfall. The intrusion of the South Atlantic Central Water and the Plata Plume Water into the BSCI favored autotrophy in the summer and heterotrophy in the winter, coupled with low and high residence time, respectively. El Niño events enhanced rainfall and continental runoff, exporting elevated nutrients and phytoplankton biomass loads from the eutrophic rivers to the continental shelf. The pattern reverses during La Niña, when chlorophyll and nutrient peaks were detected inside the bay. Eutrophication evaluation indicated that the trophic state oscillated from moderate to high and that these conditions tend to remain the same in future scenarios due to the moderate residence time of the water, anthropogenic pressures, periodic algal blooms and the intrusion of nutrient-rich oceanic water masses. Management actions, such as the improvement of the wastewater treatment system and wetlands restoration, are needed in order to mitigate eutrophication and the loss of ecosystem services and functions.

ABSTRACT

Acanthophora spicifera (M.Vahl) Børgesen is a macroalga of great economic importance. This study evaluated the antioxidant responses of two algal populations of A. spicifera adapted to different abiotic conditions when exposed to ultraviolet-A+ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-A+UV-B). Experiments were performed using the water at two collection points for 7 days of acclimatization and 7 days of exposure to UVR (3 h per day), followed by metabolic analyses. At point 1, water of 30 ± 1 practical salinity unit (psu) had concentrations of 1.06 ± 0.27 mm NH 4 + , 8.47 ± 0.01 mm NO 3 - , 0.17 ± 0.01 mm PO 4 - 3 and pH 7.88. At point 2, water of 35 ± 1 psu had concentrations of 1.13 ± 0.05 mm NH 4 + , 3.73 ± 0.01 mm NO 3 - , 0.52 ± 0.01 mm PO 4 - 3 and pH 8.55. Chlorophyll a, phycobiliproteins, carotenoids, mycosporins, polyphenolics and antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase) were evaluated. The present study demonstrates that ultraviolet radiation triggers antioxidant activity in the A. spicifera. However, such activation resulted in greater responses in samples of the point 1, with lower salinity and highest concentration of nutrients.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

We describe a patient with macroprolactinoma and discrepant insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) concentration (elevated) and growth hormone (GH) values during a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (normal), that were measured to evaluate the co-secretion of GH by tumor. With the bromocriptin use, the patient achieved normalization of prolactin, but persisted with high levels of IGF1, suggesting to be subclinical acromegaly. After the development of new more sensitive GH assays, cases of discrepant GH and IGF-1 results have been observed and taken to some authors to suggest that GH nadir concentration during 75 g OGTT used to acromegaly diagnosis and treatment could be lower than values considered currently normal. Thus, if this is confirmed, subclinical and oligosymptomatic acromegaly cases could have earlier diagnoses.

ABSTRACT

The diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism with neurological findings occurring years after thyroid surgery is considered to be rare. The authors describe 3 cases of hypoparathyroidism associated to brain calcifications diagnosed many years after partial thyroidectomy. Two patients were admitted to Emergency Services presenting with seizures, without a previous diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism. The diagnosis was suspected adding the biochemical analysis to the scar on the neck. The CT, which was performed more than 20 years after surgery, showed large cerebral calcifications in both cases. The third patient did not have neurological symptoms, but presented basal and cerebellar calcifications that were demonstrated in the CT. All patients were treated with calcium and vitamin D with great improvement of clinical status. Adding to a case published previously, we count 4 cases from the same region. Thyroidectomies were very common in this region poor in dietary iodide. Since the clinical follow up was inadequate, we suspect that undetected cases similar to these may exist in the present moment.

ABSTRACT

Phosphorus flux models show that the removal tends to be a common feature in polluted estuarine systems whereas the release of P to the adjacent coastal area occurs in pristine environments. This study analyzes the distribution of P in water and sediments along six rivers in the south coast of Brazil. Three rivers located inside protected areas were considered non-polluted and used as a control of urbanization. The other three, situated within urbanized areas, were considered as having highly elevated concentrations of P. Results showed a different behavior of P in water and sediments located in urbanized and non-urbanized areas. The concentrations of dissolved organic (P-org) and inorganic (P-inorg) phosphorus in water, and the total phosphorus (P-tot) and polyphosphate (P-poly) in sediments where higher in the urbanized rivers compared to the non-urbanized ones. Both P of punctual origin and of diffuse origin contributed to the maintenance of elevated concentrations and disturbed the natural fluxes along the polluted rivers. The minimum and maximum concentrations in urbanized areas varied from 0.39 to 12.45 (microM) for P-org and 0.00 to 5.92 (microM) for P-inorg in water, and in sediments from 89.90 to 808.16 (microM g(-1)) for P-tot and 0.00 to 76.51 (microM g(-1)) for P-poly. In non-urbanized areas concentrations in water varied from 0.22 to 1.20 (microM) for P-inorg and 4.43 to 5.56 (microM) for P-org, and in sediments from 45.91 to 652.26 (microM g(-1)) for P-tot and 0.00 to 8.61 (microM g(-1)) for P-poly. Using a hierarchical sampling design and a simple model of variation of P (K(d) model) it was possible to demonstrate that urbanized and non-urbanized estuaries may act as sinks or sources of P. The variation of P analysis in different points along each of the six rivers showed that release and removal areas may occur within a same river independently of its urbanization.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate reaction conditions for deposition of SiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of cellulose fibers and their influence on moisture adsorption of the hybrid organic-inorganic material formed. SiO2 nanoparticle deposition was carried out with the sol-gel process testing four reaction times (2, 12, 18, and 24h) and three contents of the tetraethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS) precursor (1.9, 4.2 and 8.4g g(-1) of cellulose fiber). Modification time and TEOS content directly influence the amount of Si deposited on the fiber surface, nanoparticle diameter distribution, thermal stability, and resistance to moisture adsorption. There is a tendency of slight increase of nanoparticle size and the amount of Si deposited with increasing reaction time. SiO2 nanoparticles were bonded on the surface of the cellulose fibers and are able to improve thermal stability of the material, increasing onset degradation temperature. The moisture adsorption capacity of the modified cellulose fiber was reduced up to 50%.

ABSTRACT

The anthropogenic pressures on coastal areas represent important factors affecting local, regional, and even global patterns of distribution and abundance of benthic organisms. This report undertakes a comparative analysis of the community structure of rocky shore intertidal phytobenthos in both pristine like environments (PLE) and urbanized environments (UBE) in southern Brazil, characterizing variations on different spatial scales. Multivariate analysis of variance indicated that the PLE is characterized by a larger number of taxa and an increased occurrence of Rhodophyta species in relation to UBE. In contrast, UBE were dominated by opportunistic algae, such as Cladophora and Ulva spp. Significance tests further indicated higher species richness and Shannon-Wiener diversity on the PLE in relation to UBE. Here we provide data showing the magnitude of seaweed biodiversity loss and discuss direct and indirect consequences of unplanned urbanization on these communities.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to quantify internal training loadimposed on different pre-formatted classes Les Mills® system and compare the perception ofeffort planned by the instructor with perceived by the students. The sample consisted of 20young women. 10 lessons were monitored for two consecutive weeks. The internal loadwas determined by the perceived exertion of the session (session-PSE) method. thevalues of PSE-session did not differ significantly from the 1st to 2nd week (Body Combat ©= 252 ± 36 vs. UA 258 ± 39 - p = 0.64; © Body Pump (Tuesday) = 171 ± 35 vs. 177 ± 30AU - p = 0.33; Body Step © = 246 ± 51 vs. UA- 252 ± 46 p = 0.43; © Body Pump (Thursday)= 183 ± 30 vs. 225 ± 38 UA- p = 0.06; Power Jump © = 291 ± 44 vs. UA- 315 ± 42 p = 0.06).Was no difference in 50% of lessons regarding the intensity planned by the instructor and theexperienced by the students: Body Combat © (Instructor: Students vs. 3: 4.2 ± 0.6 - p <0.01), Body© Pump (Tuesday) (Instructor: Students vs. 2: 2.8 ± 0.6 - p <0.01) and Power Jump © (Instructor: 6vs. Students: 4.8 ± 0.7 - p <0.01) in the 1st week and taught classes in Body Step © (Instructor:5 vs. Students: 4.2 ± 0.7 - p <0.01) and Power Jump © (Instructor: Students vs. 6: 5.2 ± 0.5 - p <0.01)held in the 2nd week. The results suggest that the classes analyzed maintained the samestandard internal load when repeated in different weeks. However, there was a discrepancybetween the intensity planned by the instructor and experienced by the students. these resultsindicate the importance of monitoring training loads at pre-formatted classes, especially in the context of fitness.

ABSTRACT

In respect to the three domains of this questionnaire, only the domain of the self-efficacy to deal with other symptoms presented significant difference between the daily pay and after-test (p=0,02). After test had negative correlation (r=-0,72; p=0,042) on the impact of the fibromyalgia and self-efficacy. Conclusion: Although the small number of accomplished sessions (10 sessions), the practical of walking improved the domain of the self-efficacy to deal with other symptoms in women with FM. In the analysis of the quality of life, had not occurred improvements.

ABSTRACT

Climate change can be associated with variations in the frequency and intensity of extreme temperatures and precipitation events on the local and regional scales. Along coastal areas, flooding associated with increased occupation has seriously impacted products and services generated by marine life, in particular the biotechnological potential that macroalgae hold. Therefore, this paper analyzes the available information on the taxonomy, ecology and physiology of macroalgae and discusses the impacts of climate change and local stress on the biotechnological potential of Brazilian macroalgae. Based on data compiled from a series of floristic and ecological works, we note the disappearance in some Brazilian regions of major groups of biotechnological interest. In some cases, the introduction of exotic species has been documented, as well as expansion of the distribution range of economically important species. We also verify an increase in the similarities between the Brazilian phycogeographic provinces, although they still remain different. It is possible that these changes have resulted from the warming of South Atlantic water, as observed for its surface in southeastern Brazilian, mainly during the winter. However, unplanned urbanization of coastal areas can also produce similar biodiversity losses, which requires efforts to generate long-term temporal data on the composition, community structure and physiology of macroalgae.

ABSTRACT

The Fibromyalgia (FM) treatment is based on a triad that involves physical exercise, psychology and medication. However, a low adhesion to physical exercise has been indicated. Thus, the aim of the study was to review the literature over adhesion and abandonment of physical exercise of FM patients and over intervention strategies. For so, a literature review was performed over articles published between 1990 and 2010, looking with the key-words exercise, adhesion, abandonment, fibromyalgia. Researches shown that the major factors of physical exercise adhesion of FM patients were: low levels of depression, lower age, higher education level, high perception of self-efficacy and good social life. The factors related to abandonment were described as intolerance to high intensity of physical exercise and high levels of pain. The intervention strategies proposed for adhesion to exercise identified in the studies reviewed were education on the importance of exercise, multidisciplinarity on treatment programs, have a good therapist-patient relationship and exercise prescription written and individualized.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to verify the association between mood states with clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of women with fibromyalgia. METHODS: One hundred six participants answered the Sociodemographic and Clinical Questionnaire (QSDC) and the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS). The QSDC is composed of questions about personal and clinical aspects, while BRUMS evaluates mood state over six components: tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue and mental confusion. Data was treated with descriptive statistics and the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS: The negative mood variables whore elevated, especially the tension, depression, fatigue and mental confusion, while the vigor was considered in low-level. It was also found that younger participants, who work, with a diagnosis of depression and particularly those having increased symptoms related to fibromyalgia had more depressed mood than their peers. CONCLUSION: Women with fibromyalgia had a trend toward depressed mood, and this feature is presented associated with sociodemographic and clinical factors.

ABSTRACT
