ABSTRACT

Terahertz spectroscopy systems, which integrate terahertz sources and detectors, have important applications in many fields such as materials science and security checking. Based on highly sensitive frequency up-conversion detection, large dynamic range spectral measurements in a terahertz region are reported. Our system realized the detection sensitivity at a 10 aJ level with a 2-(3-(4-hydroxystyryl)-5,5-dime-thylcyclohex-2-enylidene) malononitrile (OH1) crystal and a dynamic range up to seven orders. Based on this system, we verified the validity of the spectral measurement with tests which were conducted on monohydrate glucose, anhydrous glucose and mixed tablet samples with a thickness of 0.8 mm in 1~3 THz, respectively. Also, a mini coppery elbow tube with an inner diameter of 1 mm was used for the transmission of a terahertz wave to simulate some strip biological tissue samples. By allowing terahertz to transmit through this tube filled with 0.5 g glucose powder, we successfully obtained the absorption spectrum with a minimum transmittance at the absorption peak in the order of 10-4.

ABSTRACT

A high efficiency, continuous-wave, narrow linewidth, pump-enhanced optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at 3.8 µm was demonstrated, which was pumped by a 1064 nm fiber laser with a linewidth of 18 kHz. The low frequency modulation locking technique was employed to stabilize the output power. The wavelengths of signal and idler were 1475.5 nm and 3819.9 nm at 25 °C, respectively. The pump-enhanced structure was applied, leading to a maximum quantum efficiency of over 60% with pump power of 3 W. The maximum output power of idler light is 1.8 W with a linewidth of 363 kHz. The excellent tuning performance of the OPO was also demonstrated. In order to avoid mode-splitting and decrease of pump enhancing factor due to feedback light in the cavity, the crystal was placed obliquely to the pump beam and the maximum output power was increased by 19%. At the maximum output power of idler light, the M2 factors in the x and y directions were 1.30 and 1.33, respectively.

ABSTRACT

The wide applications of terahertz (THz) wave technology in the ∼1-3 THz range has resulted in a surge in the demand for the performance improvement of THz wave detection technique. In this study, a frequency tunable, highly sensitive frequency upconversion detection based on a 2-(3-(4-hydroxystyryl)-5,5-dime-thylcyclohex-2-enylidene) malononitrile (OH1) crystal at room temperature is demonstrated. Moreover, to effectively increase the signal-to-noise ratio in the low frequency range, a beam isolation enhancer is proposed and its effect is verified. The minimum detectable THz pulse energy reaches about 100 aJ at 1.9 THz. The frequency tuning ranging from 1 to 3 THz. Sensitivity comparison with a 4-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) crystal system shows that OH1 is a more suitable nonlinear crystal in the 1-2.4 THz range.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a modeling method for extracavity-pumped terahertz parametric oscillators (TPO) based on stimulated polariton scattering, in which the pumping beam is from a different laser, and the Stokes beam oscillates in its cavity. After suitable approximations and assumptions, the average THz wave amplitude in the nonlinear crystal is expressed as a function of the fundamental and Stokes wave amplitudes. Then the rate equation for the Stokes wave is obtained based on the Stokes wave increment within a cavity roundtrip timescale. After solving the Stokes wave rate equation, the Stokes wave temporal evolution is considered as a known parameter, and the properties of the residual fundamental and terahertz waves are obtained by numerically solving the coupled wave equations. This modeling method is applied to an extracavity-pumped TPO based on MgO:LiNbO3 crystal. The simulation results are basically consistent with the experimental results. The main reasons causing the deviations of the simulation results from the experimental results are analyzed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to perform the modeling for extracavity-pumped Q-switched TPOs.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the output energy in topological insulators (TIs)-based Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) was improved using two strategies: bidirectional pumped laser cavity and saturable absorber (SA) with high damage threshold and large modulation depth. Using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, Bismuth Selenide (Bi2Se3) film was synthesized and improved to a SA. Employing this CVD-Bi2Se3 SA in an EDFL, bright and bright-dark soliton operations were achieved. The average output power/pulse energy was 82.6 mW/48.3 nJ and 81.2 mW/47.5 nJ, respectively. The results demonstrate that CVD-Bi2Se3 can act as an excellent performance material to improve output power performance in TISA-based EDFL.

ABSTRACT

We reported on the generation of pulse bunch and large-energy dark pulses in a mode-locked ytterbium-doped linear-cavity fiber laser based on Bi2Se3 as a saturable absorber (SA). Bi2Se3 nanosheets were successfully synthesized by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and transferred to the end facet of a fiber connector for the proposed SA. Its saturation intensity and modulation depth were measured to be 52 MW/cm2 and 14.5%, respectively. By inserting the Bi2Se3-based SA into the Yb-doped all-fiber linear cavity, stable pulse bunches were observed. In addition, dark soliton operation with a maximum average output power of 32.6 mW and a pulse energy of 61.8 nJ were also achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a dark soliton within a linear cavity with much larger pulse energy than previous works. Our study fully indicated that CVD-Bi2Se3 could be an excellent SA for achieving large-energy pulse operations.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a high-energy noise-like mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser in a linear cavity was achieved with SnS2-polyvinyl alcohol film as the saturable absorber. In addition, the nonlinear saturable absorption characteristics of the SnS2 were investigated experimentally. The saturation intensity and modulation depth were about 6.01 MW/cm2 and 8.68%, respectively. Under pump power of 422 mW, stable noise-like mode-locked operation with a maximum output power and largest single pulse energy of 9.50 mW and 18.1 nJ, respectively, was obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to observe and experimentally investigate noise-like operation in a linear laser cavity. Our study may provide some valuable design guidelines for noise-like operation and create new directions for advanced photonic devices based on SnS2.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a novel high-energy mode-locked fiber laser based on the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique is presented to generate 331 nJ rectangular pulses. When pump power was 2659 mW, the maximum output power would be 102.3 mW; the maximum peak power was 41.74 W under the pump power of 1766 mW. In this study, the use of two homemade laser diodes and other common fiber devices was a vital step to achieve the low-cost and high-efficiency NPR mode-locked fiber laser. Based on these results, a novel approach could be developed to realize a high-energy rectangular pulse and promote the practical applications of the NPR mode-locked fiber laser in the field of ultrafast photonics.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a double-end pumped high-power passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) was realized by employing a few-layered In2Se3 flakes as a saturable absorber (SA). Herein, the uniform large-scale In2Se3 flakes were synthesized by the physical vapor deposition (PVD) method. The PVD-In2Se3 SA exhibited a remarkable damage threshold of higher than 24 mJ/cm2. Meanwhile, the PVD-In2Se3 SA had a modulation depth and saturable intensity of 18.75% and 6.8 MW/cm2, respectively. Based on the In2Se3 SA, the stable bright pulses emitting at 1559.4 nm with an average output power/pulse energy/pulse duration of 122.4 mW/5.8 nJ/14.4 ns were obtained successfully. To our knowledge, 122.4 mW was the new major breakthrough of mode-locked Er-doped fiber lasers. In addition, this is the first demonstration of the dark-bright pulse pair generation based on In2Se3 SA. The maximum average output power of the dark-bright pulse reached 121.2 mW, which also showed significant enhancement in comparison with previous works. Our excellent experiment results fully prove the superiority of our experimental design scheme and indicate that the PVD-In2Se3 could operate as a promising highly-nonlinear photonic material for a high-power fiber laser.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate the generation of versatile mode-locked operations in an Er-doped fiber laser with an indium tin oxide (ITO) saturable absorber (SA). As an epsilon-near-zero material, ITO has been only used to fashion a mode-locked fiber laser as an ITO nanoparticle-polyvinyl alcohol SA. However, this type of SA cannot work at high power or ensure that the SA materials can be transmitted by the light. Thus, we covered the end face of a fiber with a uniform ITO film using the radio frequency magnetron sputtering technology to fabricate a novel ITO SA. Using this new type of SA, single-wavelength pulses, dual-wavelength pulses, and triple-wavelength multi-pulses were achieved easily. The pulse durations of these mode-locked operations were 1.67, 6.91, and 1 ns, respectively. At the dual-wavelength mode-locked state, the fiber laser could achieve an output power of 2.91 mW and a pulse energy of 1.48 nJ. This study reveals that such a proposed film-type ITO SA has excellent nonlinear absorption properties, which can promote the application of ITO film for ultrafast photonics.

ABSTRACT

Root-knot nematodes (RKNs) are obligate biotrophic parasites that invade plant roots and engage in prolonged and intimate relationships with their hosts. Nematode secretions, some of which have immunosuppressing activity, play essential roles in successful parasitism; however, their mechanisms of action remain largely unknown. Here, we show that the RKN-specific gene MiMsp40, cloned from Meloidogyne incognita, is expressed exclusively in subventral oesophageal gland cells and is strongly upregulated during early parasitic stages. Arabidopsis plants overexpressing MiMsp40 were more susceptible to nematode infection than were wild type plants. Conversely, the host-derived MiMsp40 RNAi suppressed nematode parasitism and/or reproduction. Moreover, overexpression of MiMsp40 in plants suppressed the deposition of callose and the expression of marker genes for bacterial elicitor elf18-triggered immunity. Transient expression of MiMsp40 prevented Bax-triggered defence-related programmed cell death. Co-agroinfiltration assays indicated that MiMsp40 also suppressed macroscopic cell death triggered by MAPK cascades or by the ETI cognate elicitors R3a/Avr3a. Together, these results demonstrate that MiMsp40 is a novel Meloidogyne-specific effector that is injected into plant cells by early parasitic stages of the nematode and that plays a role in suppressing PTI and/or ETI signals to facilitate RKN parasitism.
