ABSTRACT

Trichoderma species are considered as biological control agents against numerous phytopathogenic fungi. They are also helpful for plants as plant symbiont. This study aimed to identify harmful effects of Trichoderma in laboratory animals. In the first step, inhalation toxicity was studied. Six rats as control received a spray of bio-formulation without spores. Ten rats as treatment A received    1.00 × 106 colony-forming unit (CFU) of Trichoderma spores and ten rats as treatment B received 1.00 × 107 CFU per test of Trichoderma spores. The harmful effects of Trichoderma were obvious especially in the lungs, liver and kidney, and some blood parameters were abnormal. In the second step, we studied acute oral toxicity by gavage. Four rats as control received bio-formulation without spores. Six rats as treatment A received 1.00 × 106 CFU per test of Trichoderma spores. Six rats as treatment B received 1.00 × 107 CFU per test of Trichoderma spores. The harmful effects of Trichoderma were noticeable more in the liver and kidney tissues. For dermal toxicity study, two rabbits as control received bio-formulation without spores by rubbing on the surface of the skin. Treatment groups A and B received 1.00 × 106 and 1.00 × 107 CFU per test of Trichoderma spores, respectively (four rabbits for each group). The liver and kidney and some blood parameters were abnormal. Trichoderma has some harmful effects on tissues and organs and although it is a natural product, it should be used under cautions.

ABSTRACT

Effects of Hilyses(®), fermented Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae), on growth, body composition and skin mucus immune components in rainbow trout were quantified. Ninety rainbow trout (105 ± 5 g) were randomly assigned to 2 groups in triplicates and fed dietary Hilyses(®) (5 g kg(-1)) or control diet without Hilyses(®) for 50 days. Results of this study demonstrated that growth performance increased significantly by the dietary yeast supplement; however body composition was not affected in treatment group. At the 45th and 50th day of feeding trial, results of mucus samples demonstrated that yeast supplementation in treatment group significantly promoted enzyme activities, namely lysozyme, protease, alkaline phosphatase and esterase compared to control group. Significant increases were also observed in hemagglutination and antibacterial activity against Yersinia ruckeri in fish fed treatment diet. The present study suggests that fermented S. cerevisiae may effectively promote the growth performance and skin non-specific immune parameters in rainbow trout.

ABSTRACT

The effects of dietary Ergosan on the growth performance and mucosal immunity in rainbow trout skin were investigated. 60 rainbow trout (100-110 g) were randomly assigned to 2 groups in triplicates and fed one of the experimental diet formulated with 5 g kg⁻¹ Ergosan or control diet for 50 days. Results showed that on the 45th day of feeding trial, Ergosan supplementation significantly enhanced the growth performance compared to control group. Various enzyme activities, namely lysozyme, protease, alkaline phosphatase and esterase in treatment group were also enhanced on the 45th and 50th day. Skin mucus in Ergosan-fed fish showed the agglutination of erythrocytes while in control group, no visible agglutination was shown. In addition, skin mucus in treatment group showed strong antibacterial activity against Yersinia ruckeri. In conclusion, the major immune components of rainbow trout mucus that are involved in the non-specific immunity were enhanced by administration of Ergosan in 5 g kg⁻¹.

ABSTRACT

Present study examined the effects of Ergosan on growth performance, digestive enzyme activities, hematological parameters and gastrointestinal structure of rainbow trout. Rainbow trout (mean weight 100-110 g) were fed basal diet (control) and diet treated with Aquavac Ergosan (5 g kg⁻¹ of diet) for 50 days. Results of this study showed that Ergosan supplementation significantly increased weight gain (94.27 g vs. 65.04 g), specific growth rate (4.09 vs. 3.10) and feed intake (136.85 g vs. 111.22 g) and decreased feed conversion ratio (1.43 vs. 2.03) compared to control (P<0.05). Lipase activity and leukocyte and erythrocyte count also increased in juvenile fish fed Ergosan-treated diet compared to control (P<0.05). Light microscopy demonstrated that both groups of fish displayed normal morphology of proximal intestine and pyloric caeca. In Ergosan-treated group, higher percentage of goblet cell was shown in proximal intestine and pyloric caeca. Present study suggests that Ergosan effectively promotes growth performance, lipase activity and gastrointestinal structure in rainbow trout.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chitosan is a cationic biopolymer obtained from deacetylating chitin, a natural compound present in crustacean shell, fungi and exoskeleton of insects. Chitosan involves various applications, including as drug and gene delivery systems, as wound dressing material and scaffolds for tissue engineering, agriculture, textile, food and feed nanotechnology, and in wastewater treatments. Chitosan-TPP particle has been figured out as the most important and stable nanoparticle for chitosan application in various fields. OBJECTIVE: In this study, chitosan was chemically modified by sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). Afterward, TPP-chitosan was radiolabeled with the gallium-67 radionuclide. The effect of several factors on labeling yield, such as chitosan solubility, acidity and concentration of TPPchitosan solution, and incubation time with gallium-67, were investigated. METHODS: To prepare [67Ga] gallium-chitosan complex, chitosan (0.5 ml) was dissolved in 2.2 mCi of [67Ga] gallium chloride solution. The obtained solution was stirred for 5 min and then kept for 30 min at room temperature. The radiochemical purity and radiolabeling yield were measured via radiochromatography, which was performed by using a radio thin-layer chromatography (TLC) scanner instrument. To investigate the effect of chitosan kind and concentration on the labeling yield, two kinds of chitosan (acid-soluble chitosan and water-soluble chitosan) at two different concentrations (1% and 0.5%) and different pH were used. In addition, labeling efficiency and stability of the 67Ga-TPP-chitosan complex (acidic/water soluble chitosan) at both concentrations (0.5 and 1%) and at room temperature were assessed for 30, 45 and 60 min. RESULTS: The incubation time did not have any significant effect on labeling yield. The acidic soluble chitosan exhibited the highest radiolabeling yield at pH=9.3-10.4, while water-soluble chitosan showed the highest radiolabeling yield at pH > 5. Also, the prepared complex was stable in the final solution at room temperature and could even be used 24 hours after preparation for further application. CONCLUSION: Taken together, the TPP-modified water-soluble chitosan at the concentration of 0.5 % depicted the highest radiochemical yield (>95 %) in the optimized condition (pH= 6.2- 7.6). Therefore, TPP modified water-soluble chitosan can prove to be an effective carrier for therapeutic radionuclides in tumor treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Rosmarinus officinalis L., a member of the family Lamiaceae, is regarded as the spice with the highest antioxidant activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, the transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) physicochemical characteristics of the nanostructure of gamma-irradiated rosemary were investigated. RESULTS: The particle size distribution of the gamma-irradiated rosemary prepared under irradiation at 30 kGy in a Cobalt-60 irradiator exhibited a very narrow size distribution with average size of 70 nm. The results showed that irradiated (30 kGy) and crude rosemary had similar patterns of FTIR spectra, typical of phenol compound, without any notable changes in the key bands and functional groups status. Rosemary irradiated with 50 kGy and 10 kGy showed the highest and lowest crystallinity, respectively. Rosemary crystallinity of irradiated samples was lower compared with the nonirradiated sample. CONCLUSION: Therefore, 30 kGy can be optimum for the synthesis of nanoparticles, average size of 70 nm, with low crystallinity and without any notable change in key bands compared to nonirradiated samples.

ABSTRACT

The level of the heavy metal in green tiger shrimp (Penaeus semisulcatus) and crab (Portunus pelagicus) caught off the Persian Gulf near Bushehr province were investigated. This study was performed to evaluate instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) to analyze heavy metal concentration in crab and shrimp whole body tissue. The order of the swimmer crab and shrimp heavy metal concentrations were Zn>Fe>As>Mn>Co and Fe>Zn>Mn>As>Co, respectively. The results showed swimmer crab (Portunus pelagicus) and shrimp (Penaeus semisulcatus) caught off Persian gulf, were contaminated with high level of As (21.38±3.31ppm and 8.28±2.82 ppm, respectively). High levels of As and Mn were noted in crabs and shrimp, respectively.
