ABSTRACT

The recent discovery of the extraordinary-log (E-Log) criticality is a celebrated achievement in modern critical theory and calls for generalization. Using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, we study the critical phenomena of plane defects in three- and four-dimensional O(n) critical systems. In three dimensions, we provide the first numerical proof for the E-Log criticality of plane defects. In particular, for n=2, the critical exponent q[over ^] of two-point correlation and the renormalization-group parameter α of helicity modulus conform to the scaling relation q[over ^]=(n-1)/(2πα), whereas the results for n≥3 violate this scaling relation. In four dimensions, it is strikingly found that the E-Log criticality also emerges in the plane defect. These findings have numerous potential realizations and would boost the ongoing advancement of conformal field theory.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Leukoaraiosis (LA) is a disease manifested by demyelination and gliosis in white matter, mainly caused by cerebrovascular diseases. LA is closely related to the expression level of inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, and vascular endothelial dysfunction in patients. Vitamin E may play antioxidant and anti-inflammatory roles in various diseases. We aimed to explore the effects of vitamin E on the patients with LA. METHODS: A total of 160 patients with LA were recruited in this research. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), MMP-2, C-reactive protein (CRP), complement 3 (C3), C4, nitric oxide (NO), and endothelin (ET) levels were evaluated by ELISA. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used for cognitive impairment assessment. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations were analyzed by commercial kits. RESULTS: The levels of CRP, C3, and C4 significantly decreased in the serum of LA patients after the administration of vitamin E. The levels of MMP-2 and MPP-9 showed a significant decrease in the administered group. Vitamin E significantly inhibited the expression of MDA, while significantly upregulated the expression of SOD. Significant increase in NO production and significant downregulation of ET expression occurred in vitamin E groups. MMSE score was significantly increased by vitamin E. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, vitamin E showed effects on the alleviation of inflammatory response, oxidative stress, endothelial damage, and cognitive dysfunction. Thus, vitamin E could be a potential drug for the clinical treatment of LA patients.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have reported high rates of poor mental health among nursing students, but few studies focused on the internal pathway of mental health. This cross-sectional study was conducted at a vocational medical school and investigated 384 nursing students. Symptom Check List-90, Index of Well-Being Scale and Cynical Attitudes Toward College Scale were used to test mental health, subjective well-being (SWB) and cynicism of nursing students, respectively. Academic cynicism, social cynicism and institutional cynicism were negatively related to mental health. SWB not only directly had positive effect on mental health, but had an indirect effect on mental health through academic cynicism, social cynicism and institutional cynicism.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The number of health care simulation centres (HSCs) in mainland China has increased exponentially recently. However, the performance of these centres varies significantly between hospitals. The aim of this study is to address two research questions: (i) what are the critical factors for implementing high-performance HSCs and (ii) how are these critical factors used in the development of implementation strategies to achieve satisfactory performance? METHODS: Following a literature review on information technology (IT) implementation, we identified a framework comprising four key dimensions for HSCs implementation: technology, organisation, environment and individuals. This TOEI (technology-organisation-environment-individual) framework was then used as a basis for a multicentre case study through which data collection and analysis proceeded. We collected 12 one-to-one in-depth interviews alongside secondary data from six high-performance HSCs in mainland China. RESULTS: Our study identifies critical TOEI factors that collectively influence HSC implementation performance and major activities at the six high-performance HSCs. Three strategies for implementing high-performance HSCs are also identified: facility management platform, education and training centre and innovation centre. CONCLUSIONS: HSC implementation is an holistic approach. The critical TOEI factors collectively build a foundation for centre activities. An HSC's implementation strategy highly relies on organisational strategic goals. Additionally, HSCs in mainland China face some common challenges such as faculty retention and future opportunities such as expanding the research scope. Our study also provides insights for hospital leadership, medical associations and policymakers.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic is a major public health emergency and a significant stressor to most people. The objective of this study was to examine the mental health status and social support level of participants from 2019 to 2020. The study aimed to investigate the changes in people's psychological capital state due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A longitudinal study was performed to study the psychosocial predictors of mental health among a sample of 2,999 Chinese employees in 2019, and the follow-up survey was conducted one year later. Regression coefficients were visualized in a heatmap. Path analysis was performed base on the structural equation model (SEM) to measure the associations between study variables. The status of mental health, resilience, and optimism changed significantly during the pandemic (P < 0.05). The level of employee's social support in 2019 could significantly and positively predicted the level of employee's psychological capital in 2020, and the level of employee mental health in 2019 significantly and negatively predicted the level of employee psychological capital in 2020. The mental health of employees played an intermediary role between social support and psychological capital. These results highlight that the COVID-19 pandemic has a strong impact on the psychological capital of company employees. While demanding performance, corporations should ensure timely intervention in the mental health of their employees.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Spreading depolarization (SD) has been regarded as one cause of neuronal injury in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). However, SD in the hyperacute phase of SAH is still unclear. The objective of this study was to detect real-time spatial-temporal patterns of SD, assess the effect of SD on cerebral blood flow, and test the relationship between SD and brain injury in the acute phase of SAH. METHODS: Twenty-eight mice were separated into two groups: 16 animals in the SAH group and 12 animals in the sham group. Experimental SAH was done with an endovascular filament perforation model. Changes in optical reflection were registered with intrinsic optical signal imaging (IOSI) after SAH. Spatial-temporal patterns of SDs were analyzed and brain injury including brain edema and infarction was tested. RESULTS: Totally, 117 SDs occurred after SAH. According to the hemodynamic response and duration, SDs could be classified into Type I (short SD), Type II (intermediate SD), and Type III (persistent SD). Most of SDs originated from the somatosensory and visual cortex. SDs demonstrated distinct spreading patterns. Moreover, the number and duration of SDs associated with brain water content (p < 0.05, p < 0.01). SDs, especially, persistent SDs associated with infarct volume in the hyperacute phase of SAH (p < 0.001, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that SD occurs with a high incidence during the acute stage of SAH in mice. And the lissencephalic mouse brain is capable of different SD propagation patterns. Additionally, SD may aggravate brain edema and induce brain infarction, contributing to early brain injury after SAH.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has caused major changes in people's mental health and behavior. This study aimed to investigate whether boredom proneness and fear of missing out acted as mediators between psychological distress and Internet addiction (IA). A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2020, including 552 youths aged 17-28 years. The recruited participants were asked to complete a series of self-reported questionnaires regarding psychological distress, fear of missing out, boredom proneness and IA. The results indicate that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the reporting rate of IA in young adults was 28.1%, and fear of missing out and boredom proneness played multiple mediation roles in the relationship between psychological distress and IA. Governments and education departments should focus on young people with psychological deficits to prevent them from succumbing to IA.

ABSTRACT

Universality is a pillar of modern critical phenomena. The standard scenario is that the two-point correlation algebraically decreases with the distance r as g(r)∼r^{2-d-η}, with d the spatial dimension and η the anomalous dimension. Very recently, a logarithmic universality was proposed to describe the extraordinary surface transition of the O(N) system. In this logarithmic universality, g(r) decays in a power of logarithmic distance as g(r)∼(lnr)^{-η[over ^]}, dramatically different from the standard scenario. We explore the three-dimensional XY model by Monte Carlo simulations, and provide strong evidence for the emergence of logarithmic universality. Moreover, we propose that the finite-size scaling of g(r,L) has a two-distance behavior: simultaneously containing a large-distance plateau whose height decays logarithmically with L as g(L)∼(lnL)^{-η[over ^]^{'}} as well as the r-dependent term g(r)∼(lnr)^{-η[over ^]}, with η[over ^]^{'}≈η[over ^]-1. The critical exponent η[over ^]^{'}, characterizing the height of the plateau, obeys the scaling relation η[over ^]^{'}=(N-1)/(2πα) with the RG parameter α of helicity modulus. Our picture can also explain the recent numerical results of a Heisenberg system. The advances on logarithmic universality significantly expand our understanding of critical universality.

ABSTRACT

Peri-infarct depolarization (PID), one kind of spreading depolarization, contributes to infarct volume enlargement after ischemic stroke. Astrocytes participate in PIDs by various mechanisms. The roles of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and vimentin (Vim), intermediate filament proteins in astrocytes, however, in PIDs induction and propagation remain unknown. Middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model was made in 9 GFAP-/-Vim-/- and 9 wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 mice. Using 4-wavelength optical intrinsic signal imaging (OIS), we identified PIDs as consistent, red and blue interaction waves in the cortical reflectance that slowly propagated peripherally from the origin site. Five propagation patterns of PIDs were observed after MCAO in mice, namely, latero-medial, medial-lateral, rostro-caudal, caudo-rostral, and collision. Additionally, the frequency, propagation velocity, and duration of PIDs between GFAP-/-Vim-/- and WT mice were not significantly different (p > 0.05). Furthermore, no significant difference was found in infarct volume and brain edema between the two groups. In conclusion, the 4-wavelength OIS system allows acquisition of high temporal-spatial resolution color images for analyzing temporal-spatial characteristics of PIDs in detail. GFAP and Vim in astrocytes are not involved in PIDs after MCAO in mice.

ABSTRACT

HOXA transcript at the distal tip (HOTTIP), which is a long noncoding RNA, plays an important role in multiple cancers and in coronary artery disease. Elevated microRNA-143 (miR-143) expression causes impaired glucose uptake that is responsible for the ischemic cerebral injury. However, the role and mechanism of HOTTIP in ischemic stroke are still unknown. The expression of HOTTIP and miR-143 was first detected in mouse models of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion and in primary neurons exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD). We used gain-of function and loss-of function approaches in vitro to investigate the effect and mechanism of HOTTIP on ischemic stroke by evaluating cell viability, apoptosis, and glycolytic metabolism of neurons exposed to OGD. The HOTTIP expression was decreased, whereas miR-143 increased in experimental ischemic stroke models. Overexpression of HOTTIP by the pcDNA3.1-HOTTIP plasmid significantly increased cell viability, glucose uptake, and the expression of hexokinase 2 (HK-2) and pyruvate kinase M2 that were reduced by OGD insult. The HOTTIP overexpression also diminished OGD induced the apoptosis and the caspase-3 activity of neurons. The miR-143 mimic reversed these effects, and anti-miR-143 enhanced them. In addition, we found that HOTTIP could function as a competing endogenous RNA for miR-143 to modulate HK-2 expression. In conclusion, the HOTTIP expression was reduced in ischemic stroke. The HOTTIP overexpression attenuated OGD-induced neuronal injury and imbalanced glycolytic metabolism by sponging miR-143, resulting in the de-repression of its endogenous target HK-2. Taken together, these findings improve understanding of the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke.

ABSTRACT

Employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we reveal the full phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model of hard-core bosons on the pyrochlore lattice with partial fillings. When the intersite repulsion is dominant, the system is in a cluster Mott insulator phase with an integer number of bosons localized inside the tetrahedral units of the pyrochlore lattice. We show that the full phase diagram contains three cluster Mott insulator phases with 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 boson fillings, respectively. We further demonstrate that all three cluster Mott insulators are Coulomb liquid phases and its low-energy property is described by the emergent compact U(1) quantum electrodynamics. In addition to measuring the specific heat and entropy of the cluster Mott insulators, we investigate the correlation function of the emergent electric field and verify it is consistent with the compact U(1) quantum electrodynamics description. Our result sheds light on the magnetic properties of various pyrochlore systems, as well as the charge physics of the cluster magnets.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequencies and significance of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and T-helper 17 (Th17) cells in peripheral blood of young children with recurrent wheezing. METHODS: Thirty young children with an acute exacerbation of recurrent wheezing were randomly enrolled. Twenty age-matched children with bronchopneumonia (pneumonia group) and 23 age-matched preoperative children with non-infectious or non-neoplastic diseases (hernia or renal calculus) (control group) were selected. The frequencies of MDSCs and Th17 cells in the peripheral blood were measured using flow cytometry and their correlation was determined by the Spearman's correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The percentage of MDSCs in nucleated cells was significantly higher in the wheezing group than in the pneumonia and control groups (P<0.05), and it was significantly higher in the pneumonia group than in the control group (P<0.05). The percentage of Th17 cells in mononuclear cells was significantly higher in the wheezing group than in the pneumonia and control groups (P<0.05), but it showed no significant difference between the pneumonia and control groups (P>0.05). The frequency of MDSCs was positively correlated with the frequency of Th17 cells in the wheezing group (r=0.645, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: MDSCs and Th17 cells may contribute to the pathogenesis of recurrent wheezing in young children.

Background: Nowadays, with the fast-increasing demand for neuro-endovascular therapy, surgeons in this field are in urgent need. Unfortunately, there is still no formal skill assessment in neuro-endovascular therapy in China. Methods: We used a Delphi method to design a newly objective checklist for standards of cerebrovascular angiography in China and evaluated its validity and reliability. A total of 19 neuro-residents with no interventional experience and 19 neuro-endovascular surgeons from two centers (Guangzhou and Tianjin) were recruited; they were divided into two groups: residents and surgeons. Residents completed a simulation-based cerebrovascular angiography operation training before assessment. Assessments were under live and video record forms with two tools: the existing global rating scale (GRS) of endovascular performance and the new checklist. Results: The average scores of residents were significantly increased after training in two centers (p < 0.05). There is good consistency between GRS and the checklist (p = 0.856). Intra-rater reliability (Spearman's rho) of the checklist was >0.9, and the same result was also observed in raters between different centers and different assessment forms (p < 0.001, rho > 0.9). The reliability of the checklist was higher than that of the GRS (Kendall's harmonious coefficient is 0.849, while GRS is 0.684). Conclusion: The newly developed checklist appears reliable and valid for evaluating the technical performance of cerebral angiography and differentiating between trained and untrained trainees' performance well. For its efficiency, our method has been proven to be a feasible tool for resident angiography examination in certification nationwide.

BACKGROUND: Using the data from a large-scale Chinese national survey, this study aimed to explore the underlying mechanisms between Chinese adults' self-assessments of family social status in childhood and depression. METHODS: The research data was from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) in 2020. We selected 13,430 Chinese adults aged 16-60 as participants, and used the PROCESS macro program to conduct moderated mediation analysis. RESULTS: Chinese adults' self-assessments of family social status in childhood had a statistically significant negative predictive effect on depression. The sharing frequency of WeChat Moments played a partial mediating role in the relationship between self-assessment of family social status in childhood and depression. Furthermore, social trust moderated the direct effect of mediation model. Age moderated the second half of the mediation model, and the effect was statistically significant in the younger population (young people), but not in the older population (middle-aged people). LIMITATIONS: This was a cross-sectional study and no causal conclusions could be drawn. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese adults' self-assessment of family social status in childhood could affect depression in adulthood through sharing frequency of WeChat Moments. People with higher social trust can effectively buffer the adverse effect of self-assessed low family social status in childhood on depression. Age moderated the relationship between sharing frequency of WeChat Moments and depression, but this moderating effect was only significant in the younger population.

This study aimed to explore the relationships between modifiable and non-modifiable factors that influence sleep quality in hospitalized patients with cardiovascular disease in China. This study design was cross-sectional and descriptive. This study involved a convenience sample of 242 patients hospitalized for cardiovascular issues. Hierarchical regression model and qualitative comparative analysis model were performed. Regression revealed that age and depression both had statistically significant effects on sleep quality. The combination of conditions with strongest predictive effect on sleep quality was male of younger age, high level of depression, high level of anxiety, and low level of social support. Other combinations with predictive power on sleep quality are as follows: (1) younger male patients (aged 47-63 years) with high level of anxiety, high level of social support, and low level of depression; (2) older male patients (aged 63-79 years) with high level of depression, high level of social support, and low levels of anxiety; and (3) older male patients with high level of anxiety and low level of social support. Nurses may promote primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular health prior to hospitalization, through routine screening for depressive and anxious symptoms and assessment of the patient's social support network. It is unknown whether these findings are unique to hospitalized patients. Therefore, future work should assess the fit of the model to other more diverse groups of hospitalized patients.

ABSTRACT

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is the result of complex interactions between many different factors. But few studies to date have explored the structure of HRQOL. This study aimed to investigate the complex inter-relationship between HRQOL and influencing factors using network analysis. In all, 624 Chinese pregnant women in third trimester were recruited through recruiting sampling. We used regularized network analysis to create a complex network. The relationship with mother-in-law was the most central node followed by relationship with partner. We found the comorbidity of anxiety and depressive symptoms using network analysis. Physical- and mental-related quality of life were a "bridge node" connecting psychological factors with physiologic factors. The present network analysis highlights the strong link between relationship with mother-in-law or partner and HRQOL, which is also a unique phenomenon under Chinese culture. This analysis provides key variables for future intervention or improvement of pregnant women' HRQOL.

OBJECTIVE: Peri-infarct depolarizations (PIDs) are spontaneous waves that propagate slowly across the penumbra region following stroke, contributing to secondary infarct growth and negatively affecting stroke outcomes. KATP channels are generally spread in the brain. Under conditions of ischemia and/or hypoxia, KATP channels play a cytoprotective role in neurons. However, it is still unknown whether KATP channels are involved in the initiation and propagation of PIDs. METHODS: The Kir6.1 knockout (Kir6.1-/-) mice, Kir6.2 knockout (Kir6.2-/-) mice, and wild-type C57Bl6 mice (n = 8) were used. The middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) stroke model was made and PIDs were detected by an optical intrinsic signal (OIS) imaging system. RESULTS: Much more PIDs appeared in Kir6.1-/-mice than that in Kir6.2-/- and WT mice in both the first hour and 4 hours following MCAO (3.9 ± 0.7 vs. 1.5 ± 0.3, p < 0,05; 3.9 ± 0.7 vs. 1.9 ± 0.3, p < 0.05; 20.0 ± 2.5 vs. 10.4 ± 2.4, p < 0.05; 20.0 ± 2.5 vs. 11.3 ± 1.4, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the first PID occurred much earlier in Kir6.1-/- mice than that in Kir6.2-/- mice and WT mice (21.3 ± 2.1 min vs. 34.1 ± 4.8 min, p < 0.05; 21.3 ± 2.1 min vs. 38.8 ± 3.4 min, p < 0.01). No significant differences in other characteristics of PIDs including originating sites, duration time, propagation patterns, and velocity were detected. Additionally, the migration of originating sites was observed. CONCLUSION: This study shows that loss of Kir6.1, not Kir6.2 facilitates the induction of PIDs in focal cerebral ischemia, indicating that Kir6.1-forming channels in the brain may provide protection against PIDs.

ABSTRACT

The incidence of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) has been increasing in recent years. Meanwhile, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been found to play vital roles in various cancers, including cSCC. This study aimed to investigate the expression of microRNA-573 (miR-573) in cSCC, its relationship with long non-coding RNA PICSAR and analyze its biological role. The relationship between PICSAR and miR-573 was confirmed by dual-luciferase reporter assay and Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis. The levels of PICSAR and miR-573 were measured using quantitative Real-Time PCR. Cell Counting Kit-8 assay was used to evaluate the cSCC cell proliferation ability. The migration and invasion abilities of cSCC cells were evaluated by Transwell assay. PICSAR expression was increased and miR-573 was decreased in tumor tissues and cSCC cell lines. PICSAR and miR-573 can bind directly, and miR-573 expression was downregulated by PICSAR in cSCC. Overexpression of miR-573 significantly inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion abilities of A431 and SCC13 cells. Additionally, miR-573 overexpression reversed the promotion effects of PICSAR overexpression on cSCC cell proliferation, migration and invasion abilities. In conclusion, our findings indicated that miR-573 expression was decreased in tumor tissues and cSCC cells and was downregulated by PICSAR in cSCC. Additionally, miR-573 overexpression inhibited cSCC cell proliferation, migration and invasion, and reversed the promotion effects of PICSAR overexpression on cSCC cell biological functions. Thus, miR-573 might function as a tumor suppressor and might be involved in the regulatory effects of PICSAR on tumorigenesis in cSCC.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between miR-196a expression and the progression and prognosis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Tissue samples and corresponding paracancerous tissue samples from 117 patients with CSCC were collected. The qRT-PCR analysis was used to detect the expression levels of miR-196a. Kaplan-Meier curve and Cox regression analyses were used to analyze the relationship between miR-196a expression and patients' prognosis. The CCK-8 and transwell assays were used to explore the effects of miR-196a on the abilities of cell proliferation, migration, or invasion. RESULTS: miR-196a expression was significantly up-regulated in CSCC tissues or cell lines, compared with adjacent normal tissues or cell lines, respectively. High expression of miR-196a was associated with positive lymph node metastasis, high TNM stages, and a lower five-year survival rate. The expression level of miR-196a was up-regulated and the proliferation, migration or invasion ability of cells were significantly increased accordingly. CONCLUSION: miR-196a is highly expressed in CSCC, thus affecting the occurrence and development of CSCC. More importantly, miR-196a was shown to have potential as a prognostic marker for CSCC.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to construct a cross-sectional study to predict the risk of bullying victimization among adolescents. METHODS: The study recruited 17,365 Chinese adolescents using stratified random cluster sampling method. The classical regression methods (logistic regression and Lasso regression) and machine learning model were combined to identify the most significant predictors of bullying victimization. Nomogram was built based on multivariable logistic regression model. The discrimination, calibration and generalization of nomogram were evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC), the calibration curve and a high-quality external validation. RESULTS: Grade, gender, peer violence, family violence, body mass index, family structure, depressive symptoms and Internet addiction, recognized as the best combination, were included in the multivariable regression. The nomogram established based on the non-overfitting multivariable model was verified by internal validation (Area Under Curve: 0.749) and external validation (Area Under Curve: 0.755), showing decent prediction of discrimination, calibration and generalization. CONCLUSION: Comprehensive nomogram constructed in this study was a useful and convenient tool to evaluate the risk of bullying victimization of adolescents. It is helpful for health-care professionals to assess the risk of bullying victimization among adolescents, and to identify high-risk groups and take more effective preventive measures.
