ABSTRACT

Treatment of the pentaphosphaferrocene [Cp*Fe(η(5)-P(5))] with Cu(I) halides in the presence of different templates leads to novel fullerene-like spherical molecules that serve as hosts for the templates. If ferrocene is used as the template the 80-vertex ball [Cp(2)Fe]@[{Cp*Fe(η(5)-P(5))}(12){CuCl}(20)] (4), with an overall icosahedral C(80) topological symmetry, is obtained. This result shows the ability of ferrocene to compete successfully with the internal template of the reaction system [Cp*Fe(η(5)-P(5))], although the 90-vertex ball [{Cp*Fe(η(5):η(1):η(1):η(1):η(1):η(1)-P(5))}(12)(CuCl)(10)(Cu(2)Cl(3))(5){Cu(CH(3)CN)(2)}(5)] (2 a) containing pentaphosphaferrocene as a guest is also formed as a byproduct. With use of the triple-decker sandwich complex [(CpCr)(2)(µ,η(5)-As(5))] as a template the reaction between [Cp*Fe(η(5)-P(5))] and CuBr leads to the 90-vertex ball [(CpCr)(2)(µ,η(5)-As(5))]@[{Cp*Fe(η(5)-P(5))}(12){CuBr}(10){Cu(2)Br(3)}(5){Cu(CH(3) CN)(2)}(5)] (6), in which the complete molecule acts as a template. However, if the corresponding reaction is instead carried out with CuCl, cleavage of the triple-decker complex is found and the 80-vertex ball [CpCr(η(5)-As(5))]@[{Cp*Fe(η(5)-P(5))}(12){CuCl}(20)] (5) is obtained. This accommodates as its guest [CpCr(η(5)-As(5))], which has only 16 valence electrons in a triplet ground state and is not known as a free molecule. The triple-decker sandwich complex [(CpCr)(2)(µ,η(5)-As(5))] requires 53.1 kcal mol(-1) to undergo cleavage (as calculated by DFT methods) and therefore this reaction is clearly endothermic. All new products have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. A favoured orientation of the guest molecules inside the host cages has been identified, which shows π⋅⋅⋅π stacking of the five-membered rings (Cp and cyclo-As(5)) of the guests and the cyclo-P(5) rings of the nanoballs of the hosts.

ABSTRACT

Slow diffusion reactions of the pentaphosphaferrocene [Cp*Fe(η(5)-P(5))] (Cp*=η(5)-C(5)Me(5) (1)) with CuX (X=Cl, Br, I) in different stoichiometric ratios and solvent mixtures result in the formation of one- and two-dimensional polymeric compounds 2-6 with molecular formula [{Cu(µ-X)}{Cp*Fe(µ(3),η(5):η(1):η(1)-P(5))}](n) (X=Cl (2a), I (2'c)), [{Cu(µ-I)}{Cp*Fe(µ(3),η(5):η(1):η(1)-P(5))}](n) (3), [{CuX}{Cp*Fe(µ(4),η(5):η(1):η(1):η(1)-P(5))}](n) (X=Cl (4a), Br (4b), I (4c), Br (4'b), I (4'c)), [{Cu(3)(µ-I)(2)(µ(3)-I)}{Cp*Fe(µ(5),η(5):η(1):η(1):η(1):η(1)-P(5))}](n) (5) and [{Cu(4)(µ-X)(4)(CH(3)CN)}{Cp*Fe(µ(7),η(5):η(2):η(1):η(1):η(1):η(1):η(1)-P(5))}](n) (X=Cl (6a), Br (6b)), respectively. The polymeric compounds have been characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and, for selected examples, by magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy. The solid-state structures demonstrate the versatile coordination modes of the cyclo-P(5) ligand of 1, extending from two to five coordinating phosphorus atoms in either σ or σ-and-π fashion. In compounds 2a, 2'c and 3, two phosphorus atoms of 1 coordinate to copper atoms in a 1,2 coordination mode (2a, 2'c) and an unprecedented 1,3 coordination mode (3) to form one-dimensional polymers. Compounds 4a-c, 4'b, 4'c and 5 represent two-dimensional coordination polymers. In compounds 4, three phosphorus atoms coordinate to copper atoms in a 1,2,4 coordination mode, whereas in 5 the cyclo-P(5) ligand binds in an unprecedented 1,2,3,4 coordination mode. The crystal structures of 6a,b display a tilted tube, in which all P atoms of the cyclo-P(5) ligand are coordinated to copper atoms in σ- and π-bonding modes.

ABSTRACT

By applying the proper stoichiometry of 1:2 to [Cp(R)Fe(eta(5)-P(5))] and CuX (X=Cl, Br) and dilution conditions in mixtures of CH(3)CN and solvents like CH(2)Cl(2), 1,2-Cl(2)C(6)H(4), toluene, and THF, nine spherical giant molecules having the simplified general formula [Cp(R)Fe(eta(5)-P(5))]@[{Cp(R)Fe(eta(5)-P(5))}(12){CuX}(25)(CH(3)CN)(10)] (Cp(R)=eta(5)-C(5)Me(5) (Cp*); eta(5)-C(5)Me(4)Et (Cp(Et)); X=Cl, Br) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The products consist of 90-vertex frameworks consisting of non-carbon atoms and forming fullerene-like structural motifs. Besides the mostly neutral products, some charged derivatives have been isolated. These spherical giant molecules show an outer diameter of 2.24 (X=Cl) to 2.26 nm (X=Br) and have inner cavities of 1.28 (X=Cl) and 1.20 nm (X=Br) in size. In most instances the inner voids of these nanoballs encapsulate one molecule of [Cp*Fe(eta(5)-P(5))], which reveals preferred orientations of pi-pi stacking between the cyclo-P(5) rings of the guest and those of the host molecules. Moreover, pi-pi and sigma-pi interactions are also found in the packing motifs of the balls in the crystal lattice. Electrochemical investigations of these soluble molecules reveal one irreversible multi-electron oxidation at E(p)=0.615 V and two reduction steps (-1.10 and -2.0 V), the first of which corresponds to about 12 electrons. Density functional calculations reveal that during oxidation and reduction the electrons are withdrawn or added to the surface of the spherical nanomolecules, and no Cu(2+) species are involved.

ABSTRACT

The complete encapsulation of ortho-carborane by a fullerene-like building-block system consisting of pentaphosphaferrocene and Cu(I)Cl leads to the formation of the spherical supermolecule C(2)B(10)H(12) section sign[{Cp*Fe(eta(5)-P(5))}(12)(CuCl)(20)]. This product of template-controlled aggregation represents the first example of a carbon-free C(80) analogue possessing icosahedral symmetry.

ABSTRACT

Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly (OHVIRA) syndrome is caused by a defect in the development of Müllerian and Wolffian ducts at fetal life. The syndrome is uncommon, with a reported prevalence of 1/2,000 to 1/28,000 cases. Endometriosis is present in 19% of cases complicating this pathology. Treatment of OHVIRA syndrome consists in resecting the vaginal septum and draining the hematocolpos. Until now there isnt an agreement on recommending diagnostic laparoscopy as part of the treatment. The aim of this study is to report the importance of diagnostic/therapeutic laparoscopy in the management of OHVIRA syndrome.

ABSTRACT

A simple and straightforward synthesis of a new linear trinuclear Cu(I) cluster with polyphosphine ligands is presented. The reaction of this pre-organized Cu3 precursor with En ligand complexes (E = P, As; n = 2, 5) affords discrete complexes exhibiting end-on η(1)-coordination of the E2 ligands or one-dimensional coordination polymers featuring σ-1,3-bridging E5 rings, respectively.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: adolescent pregnancy has consequences for the mother and her child. In addition to the risk of the index pregnancy, being a mother at this stage of life predicts the occurrence of other pregnancies before the age of 20, which further increases the vulnerability of the entire family group. Current evidence suggests that immediate postpartum initiation of long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) is the most effective intervention to prevent repeat pregnancy in adolescents. OBJECTIVES: to evaluate the strategy of starting an immediate postpartum LARC in a public hospital in the metropolitan region of our country. METHODS: at the Hospital El Carmen Dr. Luis Valentín Ferrada de Maipú, contraception counseling is given to all adolescent mothers and they are offered the start of a contraceptive implant before discharge. During 2015, 53.4% of adolescent puerperal women decided to start an implant (Implanon ®) immediately. In 2017, 92 patients from this group were contacted: 90.3% continued using the same method. Of the adolescents who had withdrawn it, all reported use of some other contraceptive method. In the intervened group there were no new pregnancies, in the control group (without postpartum contraception) 7% of repeated pregnancies were observed during the evaluated period. CONCLUSIONS: the initiation of a LARC method in the immediate postpartum seems to be a successful tool to reduce the rate of repeat pregnancy in adolescence.
