ABSTRACT
Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers. is a promising industrial crop with fruits rich in essential oils. The chemical composition of essential oils of L. cubeba (EOLC) were determined for fruits harvested from eight regions in China. The overall essential oil content, obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), ranged from 3.04% to 4.56%. In total, 59 compounds were identified, the dominant components being monoterpenes (94.4-98.4%), represented mainly by neral and geranial (78.7-87.4%). D-Limonene was unexpectedly a lesser constituent (0.7-5.3%) in fruits, which differed from previous reports (6.0-14.6%). Several components were only detected in certain regions and compounds such as o-cymene and eremophilene have never before been reported in EOLC. These results demonstrate significant regional variation in the chemical composition of EOLC. This investigation provides important information with regard to the bioactivity, breeding work and industrial applications of L. cubeba.

MicroRNA-93 (miR-93) has been found to be up-regulated in multiple malignancies. miR-93 might promote the proliferation and invasion of prostate cancer cell. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the expression level of miR-93 in prostate cancer tissues and its clinical and prognostic value in patients with prostate cancer.A total of 103 paired prostate cancer tissues and adjacent normal tissues were obtained from male patients who underwent surgical treatment in the department of urology, Huizhou Third People's Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University between July 2014 and March 2018. The correlation between prostate cancer characteristics and miR-93 expression was examined by chi-square test. Patient survival was evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed for survival data.Compared to noncancerous prostate tissues, the expression levels of miR-93 in prostate cancer tissues were significantly increased (Pâ<â.001). High level of miR-93 expression was significantly correlated with Gleason score (Pâ=â.018), lymph node involvement (Pâ=â.026), bone metastasis (Pâ<â.001), and Tumor Node Metastasis (TNM) stage (Pâ<â.001). The 5-year overall survival rate in the high expression group was lower than that in the low expression group (log-rank test, Pâ=â.031). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that miR-93 expression level (HRâ=â2.181, 95% CI: 1.092-6.829, Pâ=â.028) was an independent factor in predicting the overall survival of prostate cancer patients.The present study demonstrated that increased expression of miR-93 correlates with progression and prognosis of prostate cancer. These fndings suggest miR-93 may serve as a novel target for prostate cancer prognosis and therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of lipid peroxidation on testosterone (T) in the serum and bcl-2 expression in the Leydig cells of aging male rats. METHODS: The D-galactose-induced subacute aging male rat model was established and 20 SD rats were randomly divided into two groups of equal number: a D-galactose (D) group and a control (C) group. The activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) were examined by spectro-absorptiometer, the expression of bcl-2 by immunohistochemical method, and the concentration of serum T by radio-immunity technique. RESULTS: (1) The activity of SOD in the testis of the D group was (116 +/- 18.09) U/ mg x prot, significantly lower than in the C group [(156 +/- 31.02) U/mg x prot (P < 0.01)]. (2) The level of MDA in the testis of the D group was (1.77 +/- 0.41) nmol/mg x prot, significantly higher than in the C group [(1.19 +/- 0.15) nmol/mg x prot (P < 0.05)]. (3) Serum T in the D group was (2.39 +/- 0.90) nmol/L, significantly lower than in the C group [(8.95 +/- 2.53) nmol/L (P < 0.01)]. (4) The expressions of bcl-2 in the leydig cells of the D and C groups were (35.1 +/- 3.6)% and (49.6 +/- 7.4)% respectively, with statistical difference between them (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Lipid peroxidation affects the concentration of serum T and the expression of bcl-2 in the Leydig cells of aging male rats.
