ABSTRACT

Coordination compounds with a tin center surrounded by both organic and inorganic ligands ([SnI4{(C6H5)3PO}2], [SnI4{(C6H5)2SO}2], and [SnI4(C5H5NO)2]) acting as molecular semiconductors are in the spotlight of this article. This is a new class of hybrid semiconducting materials where optoelectronic properties of inorganic core (SnI4) were tuned by organic ligands. The valence band is located at the inorganic portion of the molecule while the conduction band is made of carbon-based orbitals. This suggests the great importance of hydrogen bonds where iodine atoms play the role of an acceptor. Weak intermolecular interactions between iodine atoms and aromatic rings are essential in a band structure formation. These materials form orange-red crystals soluble in most of organic solvents. Their semiconducting properties are addressed experimentally via photovoltage measurements, as well as theoretically, using DFT and semiempirical approaches.

ABSTRACT

Estrogens are widely used in hormone replacement therapy, gynecology, urogynecology and rarely in dermatology. Non-therapeutic use of estrogens is very widespread. Estrogens are used as contraceptives, which cause a lot of serious side effects. A common clinical problem is skin hyperpigmentation (melasma), occurring mainly in women who take contraceptives with high doses of estrogens. But low doses of estrogens may also cause skin side effects. The mechanism of melasma development is very complicated and not fully understood. It is very likely that UV radiation and genetic background can affect melasma development. Effective therapy should lead to prevention or alleviation of relapses. Treatment should also reduce the area of lesions and improve the appearance of skin. There is no effective and universal pattern of treatment, in which only one substance or method is used. A combination of different methods is used to optimize the therapy. An important role is attributed to prevention, especially protection from UV radiation.

ABSTRACT

This review focuses on the synthesis, properties and selected applications of heavy pnictogen chalcohalides, i.e. compounds of the MQX stoichiometry, where M = As, Sb, and Bi; Q = O, S, Se, and Te; and X = F, Cl, Br and I. The first section focuses on their synthesis and crystal structures, and the second section discusses the electronic structure on the basis of quantum chemical modelling and selected experimental data. Finally, the third section discusses their electrical, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic properties and applications. In contrast to perovskites, chalcopyrites and kesterites, chalcohalides have attracted relatively less attention, but their structure and properties are well suited for numerous applications.
