ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate frequency and risk factors of re-hospitalization which are not stated in comorbidity indexes in geriatric wards. METHODS: A total of 585 patients who were admitted to tertiary care geriatric inpatient clinics at least once between 1 September 2017 and 1 September 2018 and who survived to discharge during initial hospitalization were included in this cross-sectional retrospective multicenter study. RESULTS: Overall, 507(86.7%) patients were hospitalized once for treatment during the study period, while re-hospitalization occurred in 78(13.3%) patients. Rates of previous surgery (10.3 vs. 3.0%, p = .006), urinary incontinence (UI) (50.0 vs. 36.3%, p = .021), controlled hypertension (64.1 vs. 46.4%, p = .024), malnutrition (55.1 vs. 29.6%, p = .014) were significantly higher in re-hospitalized patients. Re-hospitalized patients were younger (mean ± SD 76.4 ± 8.3 vs. 79.6 ± 7.9 years, p = .002) than once-hospitalized patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed the younger patient age (OR, 0.942, 95% CI 0.910 to 0.976, p = .001), higher Modified Charlson Comorbidity Index (MCCI) score (OR, 1.368, 95% CI 1.170 to 1.600, p < .001) to significantly predict the increased risk of re-hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings showed that previous history of surgery and geriatric syndromes such as UI, malnutrition were determined to significantly predict the increased risk of re-hospitalization. We suggest that these risk factors be added to prognostic tools designed for elderly patients.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the effects of colchicine, an important anti-inflammatory agent, on cognitive functions in a geriatric population diagnosed with gout or osteoarthritis by comparing it to non-colchicine users. METHODS: 138 geriatric patients (67 colchicine users and 71 non-users) were enrolled. Within comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA), cognitive status assessment via Mini-Mental State Examination test (MMSE), Quick Mild Cognitive Impairment Screening test (Qmci), clock drowning test (CDT), and digit span tests were performed. RESULTS: Median age was 68 (65-72), and there were 82 female (59.4%) patients. The scores of CDT, Backward Digit Span Test, MMSE-Total, MMSE-Attention, MMSE-Motor Function, Qmci-Total Score, Qmci-Clock drawing, and Qmci-Logical Memory were significantly higher in the colchicine user group (p < .005), showing better cognitive function. Adjusted model analysis showed that colchicine usage is independently correlated with higher Qmci-Total Score and Qmci-Logical Memory Score (For Qmci total score ß = 7.87 95%CI = 5.48-10.27, p = <0.0001, and for Qmci Logical memory score ß = 3.52, 95%CI = 2.12-4.91, p = <0.0001). CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study revealing that colchicine usage is associated with better cognitive performance in older adults. Further investigations with a prospective, larger-sampled and randomized design are needed to show the causal relationship between colchicine and cognition.

Background: This study aims to compare the predictive value of all comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) parameters with the predictive value of frailty assessment (with Edmonton Frailty Scale (EFS) and Fried Frailty Index (FFI)) for long-term mortality, in older adults.Methods: A total of 967 patients were included, consecutively. At the first admission, age, gender, comorbidities, number of drugs, and laboratory values of the patients were recorded. Each patient underwent CGA which consisted of anthropometric measurements, functional, cognitive, mood, nutritional, gait, fall, sleep duration, and frailty assessment. Fifty-seven months after the first admission, CGA parameters were analyzed to determine their predictive abilities on long-term mortality due to all causes, comparatively.Results: The median age was 73 years (range 65-94 years). The median follow-up time was 39.9 months (range 0.5-57.3 months). Serum albumin level, FFI, EFS, instrumental activity of daily living (IADL) score, and walking time were the best predictors of mortality. There was no significant difference between these parameters in predicting mortality.Conclusion: FFI and EFS have similar predictive value for mortality. In busy clinical practice, a new index based on IADL, walking time, and serum albumin level may be an alternative of frailty assessment for predicting mortality.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of theory-based, structured, standardized pharmaceutical care services led by community pharmacists (CPs) on patient-related outcomes in older Turkish adults. PRACTICE DESCRIPTION: This prospective, quasi-experimental pilot study was conducted at the national level at community pharmacies in Turkey. After virtual training of CPs, pharmaceutical care services including medicine bag check-up, medication review, patient medicine card, patient education, and counseling services (including motivational interviewing) were delivered to promote medication adherence in older adults. PRACTICE INNOVATION: Theory-based, structured, standardized pharmaceutical care services addressing medication adherence problems in older Turkish adults with noncommunicable diseases. EVALUATION METHODS: Descriptive data (including demographic and clinical data, medication-related problems by using the DOCUMENT classification, potential inappropriate prescribing by using the Ghent Older People's Prescriptions Community Pharmacy Screening- (GheOP3S) tool, and pharmacy service satisfaction) were presented. Pre- and post-evaluation were compared by using the Wilcoxon test (for continuous variables) and McNemar's or McNemar-Bowker chi-square test (for categorical variables). RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-eight medication-related problems were identified among 52 older adults. The medication adherence rate was significantly increased from 51.9% to 75%, and the mean of total quality of life (QoL) score rose significantly from 51.7 to 53.4 (P < 0.05). There was a statistically significant change in the median of necessity-concern differential (baseline: 7 [2.2-10.0] vs. final: 8.0 [5-11]; P < 0.05). At baseline, all patients had at least 1 potential inappropriate prescribing according to the GheOP3S tool, and the rate was 73.1% at the final assessment. CONCLUSION: Community pharmacist-led pharmaceutical care services significantly improved patient-related outcomes (such as medication adherence, beliefs about medication, and QoL) in older adults with noncommunicable diseases. No statistically significant change was detected in their lifestyle behaviors (such as physical activity and diet program) or health awareness.

BACKGROUND: The influence of preoperative comprehensive geriatric assessment and frailty on postoperative morbidity, mortality, delirium were examined. METHODS: A total of 108 patients were evaluated. The Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADL), the Lawton Brody Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (IADL), the Mini-Nutrition Assessment test (MNA), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were performed. Fried Criteria were used to assess physical frailty. We used the Physiological and Operative Severity Scores for the Enumeration of Mortality and Morbidity score (POSSUM), the American Society of Anesthesiologists Score (ASA), and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to determine the risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality. Assessment Test for Delirium (4AT) was applied for detection of delirium. RESULTS: The median age was 71 years (min-max: 65-84). IADL (p = 0.032), MNA (p = 0.01), MMSE scores (p = 0.026) were found to be significantly lower in patients with morbidity. POSSUM physiology score (p = 0.005), operative score (p = 0.015) and CCI (p = 0.029) were significantly higher in the patients with morbidity. Patients developed morbidity were found to be more frail (p < 0.001). The patients with delirium were found to have lower IADL (p = 0.049) and MMSE scores (p = 0.004), higher POSSUM physiology score (p = 0.005) and all of them were frail. It was found that frailty (OR = 23.695 95% CI: 6.912-81.231 p < 0.001), POSSUM operative score (OR:1.118 95% CI: 1.021-1.224 p = 0.016) and preoperative systolic blood pressure (OR:0.937%95 CI: 0.879-0.999 p = 0.048) were independently related factors for postoperative morbidity. CONCLUSION: In our study, CGA and frailty in preoperative period were found to be indicators for postoperative morbidity and delirium.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: It is a question whether masked hypertension (MH) leads to end-organ damage in the geriatric age group. The aim of this study is to evaluate the associations between MH and end-organ damage such as left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and proteinuria in geriatric population.Materials and methods: One hundred and two patients who were admitted to the outpatient clinic were included in the study. These patients were also included in the GMASH-Cog study in 2016, which examined the relationship between MH and cognitive function. All patients underwent ambulatory blood pressure measurement procedures. Cardiac functions of all patients were determined by echocardiography. Spot urine albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) was measured in all patients.Results: Forty four of 102 patients (43%) were diagnosed with MH. ACR was 9.61 mg/gr in the MH group and 7.12 mg/gr in the normal group (p = .021). In addition, left ventricular mass index (LVMI) was found to be higher in the MH group than in the normal group. Mean LVMI scores were 107.76 ± 16.37 in patients with MH and 100.39 ± 19.32 in the normotensive group (p = .046).Conclusion: MH is associated with end-organ damage in geriatric patients. Urinary albumin excretion and LVH which are the parameters of end-organ damage were significantly higher in MH patients. MH may cause end-organ damage and should not be overlooked in geriatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Pain is one of the most frequent symptoms in older adults. It severely impairs quality of life, increases delirium risk, and may lead to progression of dementia. Assessment of pain performed by taking anamnesis from the patient is not reliable in patients with dementia due to cooperation and communication problems. The aim of this study was to assess pain and its consequences in patients with dementia. METHODS: Seventy-five nursing home residents with dementia were enrolled. After comprehensive geriatric assessment, presence of pain was asked to patients, and Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia (PAINAD), Discomfort Scale for Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type (DS-DAT), Pain Assessment for the Dementing Elderly (PADE), Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale, and Numeric Rating Scale tests were performed. RESULTS: Mean age was 81.1 (7.0), and 46.7% (n = 35) were female. Thirty-two percent of the patients were at early stage, 24% at moderate stage, and 44% at severe stage. Although the number of patients declaring pain was lower in moderate and severe stage, scores of PADE, PAINAD, and DS-DAT were significantly higher in severe stage showing the presence of pain ( P < .001). Furthermore, scores of PADE, PAINAD, and DS-DAT were negatively correlated with comprehensive geriatric assessment test scores. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate that pain is not rare in patients with dementia, but they are not usually capable of expressing it, especially in the severe stage. Therefore, objective pain assessment scales developed for patients with dementia should be routinely used and management of pain should be done regarding the association of pain with other geriatric syndromes.

BACKGROUND: The novel molecule endocan, which is released by endothelium and is regulated by proangiogenic and proinflammatory cytokines, may have a role in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer disease (AD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum endocan levels and AD. METHODS: A total of 134 patients (47 AD, 42 amnestic mild cognitive impairment [aMCI], and 45 control patients) 65 years of age and older were recruited in this study. Cognitive status of the patients was evaluated by performing the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Serum endocan levels were measured with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. RESULTS: Median serum endocan level was significantly higher in AD patients (380.1 ng/mL) than in both aMCI patients (247.7 ng/mL) and controls (277.6 ng/mL; p < 0.01). Serum endocan level had a weak but significant correlation with MMSE and MOCA scores (r = -0.219 and r = -0.232; p = 0.012 and p = 0.01, respectively). Serum endocan level was detected as a factor independently associated with AD. The cutoff serum level of endocan predicting AD was >288.94 ng/mL in receiver operating characteristic curve analysis (area under the curve 0.71, 95% CI 66.7-90.9, sensitivity 80.9%, specificity 59.8%; p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Higher serum endocan levels may be associated with the pathogenesis of AD.

BACKGROUND: Determining predictors of mortality among older adults might help identify high-risk patients and enable timely intervention. AIMS: The aim of the study was to identify which variables predict geriatric outpatient mortality, using routine geriatric assessment tools. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 1141 patients who were admitted to the geriatric medicine outpatient clinic between 2001 and 2004. Comprehensive geriatric assessment was performed by an interdisciplinary geriatric team. Mortality rate was determined in 2015. The parameters predicting survival were examined. RESULTS: Median age of the patients (415 male, 726 female) was 71.7 years (53-95 years). Mean survival time was 12.2 years (95 % CI; 12-12.4 years). In multivariate analysis, age (OR: 1.16, 95 % CI: 1.09-1.23, p < 0.001), smoking (OR: 2.51, 95 % CI: 1.18-5.35, p = 0.017) and metabolic syndrome (OR: 2.20, 95 % CI: 1.05-4.64, p = 0.038) were found to be independent risk factors for mortality. MNA-SF scores (OR: 0.84, 95 % CI: 0.71-1.00, p = 0.050) and free T3 levels (OR: 0.70, 95 % CI: 0.49-1.00, p = 0.052) had borderline significance. DISCUSSION: The present study showed that the risk conferred by metabolic syndrome is beyond its individual components. Our findings confirm previous studies on the prognostic role of nutritional status, as reflected by MNA-SF. Serum fT3, a simple laboratory test, may also be used in geriatric outpatient clinics to identify individuals at risk. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study demonstrated the need for addressing modifiable risk factors such as smoking, metabolic syndrome, and undernutrition in older adults.

ABSTRACT

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia. Dabigatran etixalate (DE) is one of the new oral anticoagulant drugs being used in nonvalvular AF (NVAF). There is no adequate real world data in different populations about DE. The aim of this registry was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of DE Consecutive NVAF patients treated with warfarin or both DE doses were enrolled during 18 months study period. The patients were re-evaluated at regular 6-month intervals during the follow-up period. During the follow-up period outcomes were documented according to RELY methodology A total of 555 patients were analyzed. There was no significant difference in ischemic stroke rates (p = 0.73), death rates (p = 0.15) and MI rates (p = 0.56) between groups. The rate of major bleeding was significantly higher in warfarin and dabigatran 150 mg group than dabigatran 110 mg (p < 0.001). Intracranial bleeding rate and relative risk were significantly lower in dabigatran 110 mg group than warfarin group (p = 0.004). Dyspepsia was significantly higher in both DE doses than warfarin (p = 0.004) Both DE doses are as effective as warfarin in reducing stroke rates in NVAF patients, without increasing MI rates. Intracranial bleeding rates are significantly lower in warfarin than both doses of DE and gastrointestinal bleeding risk increases with increased DE doses.

BACKGROUND: Phase angle (PhA) value determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is an indicator of cell membrane damage and body cell mass. Recent studies have shown that low PhA value is associated with increased nutritional risk in various group of patients. However, there have been only a few studies performed globally assessing the relationship between nutritional risk and PhA in hospitalized geriatric patients. The aim of the study is to evaluate the predictive value of the PhA for malnutrition risk in hospitalized geriatric patients. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-two hospitalized geriatric patients were included in this cross-sectional study. Comprehensive geriatric assessment tests and BIA measurements were performed within the first 48 h after admission. Nutritional risk state of the patients was determined with NRS-2002. Phase angle values of the patients with malnutrition risk were compared with the patients that did not have the same risk. The independent variables for predicting malnutrition risk were determined. SPSS version 15 was utilized for the statistical analyzes. RESULTS: The patients with malnutrition risk had significantly lower phase angle values than the patients without malnutrition risk (p = 0.003). ROC curve analysis suggested that the optimum PhA cut-off point for malnutrition risk was 4.7° with 79.6 % sensitivity, 64.6 % specificity, 73.9 % positive predictive value, and 73.9 % negative predictive value. BMI, prealbumin, PhA, and Mini Mental State Examination Test scores were the independent variables for predicting malnutrition risk. CONCLUSIONS: PhA can be a useful, independent indicator for predicting malnutrition risk in hospitalized geriatric patients.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the prevalence and possible predictors of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) and potentially prescription omissions (PPOs) according to the Screening Tool of Older Person's Prescriptions (STOPP) and Screening Tool to Alert doctors to Right Treatment (START) criteria in geriatric patients. METHODS: A total of 374 patients (140 male, 234 female) aged ≥65 years were included. Comprehensive demographic and clinical data including age, gender, current diagnoses/medications, comorbid diseases and medical problems were noted. RESULTS: There were 154 (41.2 %) patients with at least one PIM. Most common PIMs were proton pump inhibitors for peptic ulcer disease (9.6 %), calcium-channel blockers (6.4 %) and anticholinergic/antispasmodic drugs (5.9 %) in chronic constipation. There were 274 (73.3 %) patients with at least one PPO. Most common PPOs were calcium-vitamin D supplement in osteoporosis (OP) (39.6 %), statin (22.5 %) and antiplatelet therapies (16.0 %) in diabetes mellitus (DM) with cardiovascular risk factors. PIM was independently associated with female gender (OR = 2.21, p = 0.003), number of medications (OR = 1.35, p < 0.001), Katz scores of daily life activities (OR = 0.87, p = 0.013) and OP (OR = 0.29, p < 0.001). PPO was independently associated with age (OR = 1.06, p = 0.009), Geriatric Depression Scale score (OR = 1.20, p = 0.007), DM (OR = 6.50, p < 0.001), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (OR = 5.29, p = 0.010), number of medications (OR = 0.88, p = 0.019), and incontinence (OR = 0.39, p = 0.043). CONCLUSION: High prevalence of PIMs and PPOs were found in geriatric patients. Number of medications, female gender, and dependency were associated with PIM. Age, higher scores of Geriatric Depression Scale, DM, and COPD were related with PPOs.

OBJECTIVES: Incidences of overactive bladder (OAB) and cognitive dysfunction increase with aging. Treatment of OAB with antimuscarinic agents may result in cognitive decline, especially in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of antimuscarinic treatment on cognitive functions, depression, and quality of life (QOL) of patients with OAB. METHODS: This non-interventional prospective observational study was conducted in a geriatric medicine outpatient clinic. Overall, 168 OAB patients were enrolled. Patients were followed up in five groups: oxybutynin, darifenacin, tolterodine, trospium, and control groups. Follow-up visits were done at second, third, and sixth months. Comprehensive geriatric assessment, cognitive and mood assessment, QOL scales (IIQ-7, UDI-6) were performed. RESULTS: Mean age of the patients was 73.5 ± 6.1. Of the 168 patients, 92.3% were female, 83.3% benefited from the treatment, and 37.1% discontinued the medication. Discontinuation rate and frequency of side effects were more frequent in the oxybutynin group. Mini Mental State Examination scores did not decline after treatment, even in AD patients. Geriatric Depression Scale scores, Activities of Daily Living scores, and QOL scores significantly improved after treatment. CONCLUSION: Antimuscarinic agents are effective in OAB treatment. They have a positive impact on daily life activities, depression, and QOL indices. Furthermore, they do not have a negative effect on cognitive function in older adults with or without AD.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of Disability Assessment for Dementia (DAD) scale in the Turkish elderly population with Alzheimer disease (AD). The DAD scale was administered to the primary caregivers of 157 patients (age 77.7 ± 6.8 years) with AD. The Turkish version of the DAD scale showed high internal consistency (Cronbach α = .942), excellent test-retest, and interrater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.996 and ICC = 0.994, respectively). The DAD scale was significantly correlated with activities of daily living (ADL; Modified Older Americans Research Survey ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL; Lawton and Brody IADL) scales (r = .89, P < .001 and r = .90, P < .001). Disability Assessment for Dementia had a high negative correlation with the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS; r = -.880, P < .001). Post hoc comparisons with Tukey test showed significant differences in the mean DAD scores in different GDS stages. Construct validity was estimated using total score correlation analyses between the standardized Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the DAD scale. Results revealed high and significant correlation between MMSE score and DAD scale (r = .812, P < .001). The results of multivariate analysis showed that DAD score was not correlated with gender, education, and age. The DAD total score was affected mostly by GDS, MMSE, and duration of the disease. Turkish version of the DAD scale was found to be a reliable and valid instrument to assess functional disability in Turkish elderly patients with AD. This scale assists caregivers and physicians to decide for proper interventions.

ABSTRACT

Hydatid cyst, a human parasitic disease, remains a clinical problem in undeveloped and developing countries. Although liver and lungs are regular sites of infection, rarely other organs such as the heart can be involved. Herein, we report an isolated cardiac hydatid cyst in an 87-year-old man. He had a history of dementia for 5 years and no history for cardiac or pulmonary disease. He presented with exertional dyspnoea which continued up to 6 months. The diagnosis was made by echocardiography and computed tomography (CT). The patient was inoperable and was treated with albendazole 10 mg/kg for 6 months. After a 6-month follow-up, echocardiography revealed reduction in the size of the cyst. We believe this is the first documented case of cardiac hydatid cyst which regressed with only medical treatment in an older adult with dementia.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Dementia is one of the most common health problems in the world. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. The relation between blood pressure (BP) and dementia has been the subject of numerous epidemiological studies, and midlife hypertension (HT) is a risk factor for AD. The association between BP and risk of dementia is lower in the older population. The aim of this study was to examine the association between the prevalence of HT and AD in elderly individuals. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 193 patients with AD and 1,860 patients with normal cognitive function were evaluated. RESULTS: The prevalence of HT was lower in the AD group (60.6 vs. 70.5%; p = 0.005). In multivariate analysis, AD was found to be negatively correlated with HT (OR = 0.649; 95% CI 0.461-0.916). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of HT was lower in patients with AD compared to subjects without AD. Physicians who deal with AD patients must keep in mind that the need for antihypertensive medication may decline during the dementia process.

Background & Aim: Muscle strength seems to be more relevant to the functionality than muscle mass in sarcopenia. Different diagnostic techniques are available for the evaluation of muscle mass. Ultrasonography (USG) seems to have some advantages compared to other techniques especially bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) including being not affected of the results by the factors like extreme body mass indexes (BMI) or hypervolemia. The aim of the study is to determine and compare the muscle strength prediction value of muscle mass measured by using USG or BIA and determine the cut-off values for the Turkish population.Methods: One hundred and thirty six patients admitted to geriatrics outpatient clinic for comprehensive geriatric assessment were included in the study. Body composition was determined by BIA and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was measured. Thickness of the gastrocnemius muscle was measured via USG. Diagnosis of sarcopenia was made according to the EWSGOP 2 diagnostic criteria.Results: The best cut-off value for gastrocnemius muscle thickness to predict low HGS was ≤13.8 mm (AUC:0.690,p <0.001). SMI was not found to predict low HGS (AUC:0.573,p >0.05). Comparison of AUCs for gastrocnemius muscle thickness and SMI showed that gastrocnemius muscle thickness had higher AUC (p=0.008). For predicting sarcopenia, the best cut-off value of gastrocnemius muscle thickness was found to be ≤12.3 mm in women (AUC: 0.862,p <0.001) and ≤12.3 mm in men (AUC:0.900, p < 0.001).Conclusions: In this study, we found that gastrocnemius thickness measured by USG seems to predict low HGS better than SMI measured by BIA.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia prevalence are expected to increase with aging. The DemTect is a very quick and easy tool to administer and recognize the early stages of dementia and MCI. In this study we aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of a Turkish version of the DemTect and define cut off values for different age and educational levels. One of our aims is also to compare the sensitivity and specifity of the DemTect to other common screening tools. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-four patients with MCI, 55 patients with dementia and 91 patients with subjective memory complaints (SMC) were enrolled in the study. The DemTect was translated into Turkish by forward-backward translation and compared with the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Quick Mild Cognitive Impairment Turkish version (QMCI-TR) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). In order to test interrater reliability, the DemTect was administered to 11 patients, on the same day, by 2 trained raters. To establish test-retest reliability, the same rater scored the tool a second time on 11 patients within 2 weeks. RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 73 (min-max: 65-90) years, 54.5% were female. We found a strong correlation between DemTect scores and the MMSE, the QMCI, and the MoCA (r = 0.725, r = 0.816, r = 0.821, respectively; p < 0.001). In ROC analysis, the cut-off point of the DemTect to differentiate MCI from SMC was 11.5 with 92.6% sensitivity, 91.2% specificity, AUC 0.973 and the cut-off point of the DemTect to differentiate dementia from SMC was 9.5 with 96.4% sensitivity, 100% specificity, AUC 0.916. Cronbach α was 0.823. Intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.873 (95% CI: 0.598-0.964) for interrater reliability and 0.966 (95% 0.777-0.982) for test-retest reliability (Cronbach α = 0.932, 0.966 respectively). CONCLUSION: The DemTect is a very reliable tool to assess Turkish patients with MCI and dementia.
