ABSTRACT

Enhancing the antitumor immune response and targeting ability of oncolytic viruses will improve the effect of tumor immunotherapy. Through infecting neural stem cells (NSCs) with a capsid dual-modified oncolytic adenovirus (CRAd), we obtained and characterized the "oncolytic extracellular vesicles" (CRAdEV) with improved targeted infection and tumor killing activity compared with CRAd. Both ex vivo and in vivo studies revealed that CRAdEV activated innate immune cells and importantly enhanced the immunomodulatory effect compared to CRAd. We found that CRAdEV effectively increased the number of DCs and activated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, significantly increased the number and activation of B cells, and produced higher levels of tumor-specific antibodies, thus eliciting enhanced antitumor activity compared with CRAd in a B16 xenograft immunocompetent mice model. This study provides a novel approach to oncolytic adenovirus modification and demonstrates the potential of "oncolytic extracellular vesicles" in antitumor immunotherapy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To validate the safety and clinical results of single-stage bilateral versus unilateral medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO). METHODS: A propensity-matched cohort study was performed from March 2020 to March 2021 in our medical center. Data were prospectively collected. Including 34 patients who underwent single-stage bilateral medial opening HTO(SSBHTO), and 68 cases in the unilateral group. Propensity-matched ration was 2:1 based on age, sex, and body mass index using R software. Comparisons of the length of hospital stay, operative time, blood loss, postoperative adverse events, 90-day readmission rate, conversion to TKA rate, self-reported VAS and WOMAC scores were made to investigate the safety and clinical results of bilateral HTO. RESULTS: The mean length of hospital stay was 7.36 ± 2.23 days for SSBHTO and 7 days (IQR, 3 days; range, 4 to 23 days) for the unilateral group (P = 0.219). The mean operative time was 144 ± 47 min for bilateral HTO and 105(37.5) mins for a unilateral OWHTO (P < 0.001). The mean blood loss was 150(100) ml for SSBHTO and 100(50) ml for unilateral OWHTO (P < 0.001). There were no significant difference of the adverse events and 90-day readmission rate between two groups. No failed HTO or conversion to knee arthroplasty were observed at the end of follow-up. VAS, pain, stiffness, and functional scores of the WOMAC scale were essentially comparable of two groups one year after surgery (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A single-stage bilateral medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy is advisable for patients with knee osteoarthritis. Patients benefit from avoiding secondary anesthesia, postoperative complications, and substantial cost savings. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic Level III.

ABSTRACT

An oncolytic virus is a promising strategy for glioblastoma (GBM) therapy. However, there are still some challenges such as the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and preexisting immunity for targeted treatment of GBM with an oncolytic virus. In this study, two kinds of cell membrane-coated oncolytic adenoviruses (NCM-Ad and GCM-Ad) were prepared using neural stem cells (NSCs) and GBM cells as sources of membranes, respectively, and were shown to improve the targeted infectivity on GBM cells and avoid the immune clearance of preexisting neutralizing antibodies in vitro and in vivo. Specifically, NCM-Ad showed a strong ability to cross the BBB and target tumor cells in vivo. To improve the cytotoxicity to GBM, a capsid dual-modified oncolytic adenovirus (A4/k37) was also encapsulated, and NCM-A4/k37 showed outstanding tumor targeting and inhibition capacity in an orthotopic xenograft tumor model of GBM upon intravenous administration. This study provides a promising oncolytic virus-based targeted therapeutic strategy for glioma.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the number of operator errors, task completion time, and workload of subjects at different levels by imposing conditions such as focused text boldness, noise disturbance, and time pressure to simulate a realistic cloud change business process in the laboratory. Results of the study showed that the text bolding of important content reduced the number of errors, whereas noise interference increased the number of errors. Text boldness only reduced the number of corrected errors, and noise interference only increased the number of uncorrected errors. Moreover, bolding was found to have different effects on the number of errors under different noise levels and time pressure levels, with text boldness significantly reducing the number of total errors only in quiet or low time pressure states. Time pressure had no effect on cloud change task error counts, but high time pressure resulted in higher subjective workload.


Operator error is one of the main causes of service failure, and reducing operator error in cloud change operations is of practical importance. In this study, we found focused text boldness could reduce operator errors, while noise could increase the number of errors. High time pressure would lead to a high workload.

ABSTRACT

Merging the rich chemistry of Ce(IV) polyoxometalates (POMs) with that of 3d polyanions remains a challenge due to the strong competition between these highly oxophilic lanthanide cations and 3d metallic ions for coordination to lacunary molecular metal oxides. We report herein the characterization of an unprecedented water stable hexameric CeIV/CoII POM (Ce12Co6) made of two {(SiW9)2Ce6} units connected to a {(SiW10)2Co6(PO4)2} core. In addition, the pentameric CeIV/NiII compound Ce6Ni8, where two {PW9Ni3W} and a {PW10Ni2} fragments are grafted on a {(PW9)2Ce6} moiety, has been obtained. Magnetic studies of Ce6Ni8 revealed ferromagnetic interactions between the NiII centers constituting the {Ni3PW10} fragments, in agreement with the geometry of such a trinuclear cluster. Related insoluble barium salts of Ce12Co6 and Ce6Ni8 were also prepared, allowing their solid-state electrochemical investigations and showing in particular that in Ce12Co6, both the cobalt, cerium, and silicotungstate moieties are electroactive. Finally, photophysical studies demonstrate the formation of long-lived reduced POMs photosensitized by [Ru(bpy)3]2+, suggesting that Ce12Co6 and Ce6Ni8 could be used as efficient reservoirs of reduction equivalents for photocatalytic reactions.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify independent risk factors for immediate postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) and to develop and validate a predictive nomogram. METHODS: Patients who underwent OWHTO for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) from June 2017 to December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Baseline data and laboratory test results were collected, and the occurrence of DVT in the immediate postoperative period was regarded as the study outcome event. Multivariable logistic regression identified independent risk factors associated with a higher incidence of immediate postoperative DVT. The predictive nomogram was constructed based on the analysis results. The stability of the model was further assessed in this study using patients from January to September 2022 as an external validation set. RESULTS: 741 patients were enrolled in the study, of which 547 were used in the training cohort and the other 194 for the validation cohort. Multivariate analysis revealed a higher Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) grade (III vs. I-II OR 3.09, 95% CI 0.93-10.23. IV vs. I-II OR 5.23, 95% CI 1.27-21.48.), platelet to hemoglobin ratio (PHR) > 2.25 (OR 6.10, 95% CI 2.43-15.33), Low levels of albumin (ALB) (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.70-0.90), LDL-C > 3.40 (OR 3.06, 95% CI 1.22-7.65), D-dimer > 1.26 (OR 2.83, 95% CI 1.16-6.87) and BMI ≥ 28 (OR 2.57, 95% CI 1.02-6.50) were the independent risk factors of immediate postoperative DVT. The concordance index (C-index) and Brier score of the nomogram were 0.832 and 0.036 in the training set, and the corrected values after internal validation were 0.795 and 0.038, respectively. The receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the calibration curve, the Hosmer-Lemeshow test, and the decision curve analysis (DCA) performed well in both the training and validation cohorts. CONCLUSION: This study developed a personalized predictive nomogram with six predictors, which allows surgeons to stratify risk and recommended immediate ultrasound scans for patients with any of these factors. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Proximal tibia osteotomy with absorbable spacer combined with fibular osteotomy (TPOASI) is an emerging surgical technique for treating knee osteoarthritis (KOA); however, the efficacy of this procedure remains unknown. We hypothesize that TPOASI can achieve similar clinical outcomes to opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OW-HTO). The objective of this study is to compare the clinical results between these two procedures. METHODS: Patients who underwent TPOASI or OW-HTO from July 2016 to September 2020 were included. The following outcome parameters were determined before and after the surgery: the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), the visual analogue scale of pain, the Intermittent and Persistent Osteoarthritis Pain Scale, femorotibial angle, and post-operative complications. RESULTS: In total, 209 cases were analyzed (102 in TPOASI group; 107 in OW-HTO group) with 3.1 years average follow-up. Both procedures achieved significant improvement in KOOS (62.0 to 24.4 in the TPOASI and 62.8 to 26.2 in the OW-HTO group, p < 0.001) and WOMAC score (68.9 to 24.1 in the TPOASI versus 69.9 to 26.1 in the OW-HTO group, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in complications or femorotibial angle between the two groups but the only significant difference in the outcome parameters was the WOMAC stiffness score (19.6 in the TPOASI versus 26.5 in the OW-HTO group). CONCLUSION: TPOASI achieves comparable results to OW-HTO in terms of clinical scores, radiographic results, and complications, but has the advantage of avoiding internal fixation removal.

BACKGROUND: Home visits are an important part of home care. With increasing demand and the rapid development of information technology, an increasing number of regions are experimenting with the use of information technology in home visits, hoping to meet the needs of more patients through technological interventions. However, most of the current studies have focused on patient health improvement through home visits, neglecting to consider the actual experience of nurses as service providers in participating in Internet-based programs. Thus, the purpose of this research is to explore what is holding nurses back from participating after the Internet has been added to traditional home visiting programs. METHODS: This research was designed with an exploratory-descriptive qualitative analysis method. Semistructured interviews were used to collect information on barriers to nurses' participation in the Internet-based home visiting program. Participants included 16 clinical nurses working in various hospitals in Nanjing, China. The thematic analysis method was used to analyze the information. RESULTS: This research identified three themes and twelve subthemes that hinder clinical nurse engagement in the Internet-based home visiting program. The three themes included multiple barriers to individuals, different service modes, and emerging organizational problems. CONCLUSIONS: As a new form of traditional home visiting program in information society, Internet-based home visiting has many shortcomings in the overall program design and service management specifications. For more patients living at home to receive quality care services, it is necessary to take more effective measures to encourage nurses' participation at three levels: nurse demand, service process, and organizational management.

ABSTRACT

The problems with plastic materials and the good film-forming properties of polysaccharides motivated research in the development of polysaccharide-based films. In the last 5 years, there has been an explosion of publications on using green solvents, including ionic liquids (ILs), and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as candidates to substitute the conventional solvents/plasticizers for preparations of desired polysaccharide-based films. This review summarizes related properties and recovery of ILs and DESs, a series of green preparation strategies (including pretreatment solvents/reaction media, ILs/DESs as components, extraction solvents of bioactive compounds added into films), and inherent properties of polysaccharide-based films with/without ILs and DESs. Major reported advantages of these new solvents are high dissolving capacity of certain ILs/DESs for polysaccharides (i.e., up to 30 wt% for cellulose) and better plasticizing ability than traditional plasticizers. In addition, they frequently display intrinsic antioxidant and antibacterial activities that facilitate ILs/DESs applications in the processing of polysaccharide-based films (especially active food packaging films). ILs/DESs in the film could also be further recycled by water or ethanol/methanol treatment followed by drying/evaporation. One particularly promising approach is to use bioactive cholinium-based ILs and DESs with good safety and plasticizing ability to improve the functional properties of prepared films. Whole extracts by ILs/DESs from various byproducts can also be directly used in films without separation/polishing of compounds from the extracting agents. Scaling-up, including costs and environmental footprint, as well as the safety and applications in real foods of polysaccharide-based film with ILs/DESs (extracts) deserves more studies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Costimulatory molecules have been proven to be the foundation of immunotherapy. However, the potential roles of costimulatory molecule genes (CMGs) in HCC remain unclear. Our study is aimed to develop a costimulatory molecule-related gene signature that could evaluate the prognosis of HCC patients. METHODS: Based on The Cancer Gene Atlas (TCGA) database, univariate Cox regression analysis was applied in CMGs to identify prognosis-related CMGs. Consensus clustering analysis was performed to stratify HCC patients into different subtypes and compared them in OS. Subsequently, the LASSO Cox regression analysis was performed to construct the CMGs-related prognostic signature and Kaplan-Meier survival curves as well as ROC curve were used to validate the predictive capability. Then we explored the correlations of the risk signature with tumor-infiltrating immune cells, tumor mutation burden (TMB) and response to immunotherapy. The expression levels of prognosis-related CMGs were validated based on qRT-PCR and Human Protein Atlas (HPA) databases. RESULTS: All HCC patients were classified into two clusters based on 11 CMGs with prognosis values and cluster 2 correlated with a poorer prognosis. Next, a prognostic signature of six CMGs was constructed, which was an independent risk factor for HCC patients. Patients with low-risk score were associated with better prognosis. The correlation analysis showed that the risk signature could predict the infiltration of immune cells and immune status of the immune microenvironment in HCC. The qRT-PCR and immunohistochemical results indicated six CMGs with differential expression in HCC tissues and normal tissues. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our CMGs-related risk signature could be used as a prediction tool in survival assessment and immunotherapy for HCC patients.

ABSTRACT

Tetrahedral semiconductors such as Si adopt a diamond-type crystal structure with low packing density arising from open cavities in the crystallographic space. By taking LiAlGe as an example, we propose a zincblende-type framework as a platform for semiconductors possessing electroactive cavities. LiAlGe adopts a half-Heusler-type crystal structure including an ordered diamond-type sublattice (zincblende-type) (AlGe) and is an indirect semiconductor with a band gap of ∼0.1 eV. The conduction band minimum (CBM) is uniquely located at the cavity space surrounded by four cations (Al4) in real space. The bond ionicity and cation (Al) p orbitals located around the Fermi energy are requisite for the CBM to float in the cavity space. DFT calculations indicate the conversion of the semiconductor to a semimetallic electride under a pressure of ∼8 GPa, which is accompanied by band gap collapse due to electron transfer from valence band maximum to the cavity space. The high-pressure electride of LiAlGe formed under a very small critical pressure is derived from the presence of inherent crystallographic cavities having deep orbital levels energetically. This finding suggests the possible utilization of electroactive cavity spaces in tetrahedral semiconductors, which are widely used in modern electronic devices.

Objective: This study is aimed at exploring alteration in motor-related effective connectivity in individuals with transient ischemic attack (TIA). Methods: A total of 48 individuals with TIA and 41 age-matched and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited for this study. The participants were scanned using MRI, and their clinical characteristics were collected. To investigate motor-related effective connectivity differences between individuals with TIA and HCs, the bilateral primary motor cortex (M1) was used as the regions of interest (ROIs) to perform a whole-brain Granger causality analysis (GCA). Furthermore, partial correlation was used to evaluate the relationship between GCA values and the clinical characteristics of individuals with TIA. Results: Compared with HCs, individuals with TIA demonstrated alterations in the effective connectivity between M1 and widely distributed brain regions involved in motor, visual, auditory, and sensory integration. In addition, GCA values were significantly correlated with high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterols in individuals with TIA. Conclusion: This study provides important evidence for the alteration of motor-related effective connectivity in TIA, which reflects the abnormal information flow between different brain regions. This could help further elucidate the pathological mechanisms of motor impairment in individuals with TIA and provide a new perspective for future early diagnosis and intervention for TIA.

One-dimensional (1D) semiconductor nanorods are important for numerous applications ranging from optics and electronics to biology, yet the direct synthesis of high-quality metal halide perovskite nanorods remains a challenge. Here, we develop an intermediate monomer reservoir synthetic strategy to realize the controllable growth of uniform and low-defect CsPbBr3 perovskite nanorods. Intermediates composed of CsPb2Br5 and Cs3In2Br9 are obtained through the substitution of Pb2+ with In3+ cations in the template of CsPbBr3 nanocubes and act as a precursor reservoir to gradually release monomers, ensuring both the slow growth rate and low defects of nanorods. We have used branched tris(diethylamino)phosphine as a ligand, which not only has unequal binding energies with different crystal faces to promote the orientation growth but also provides strong steric hindrance to shield the nanorods in solution. Because of minor amount of defects and an effective ligand passivation, in addition to significantly enhanced stability, the perovskite nanorods show a high photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 90% and exhibit a net mode gain of 980 cm-1, the latter being a record value among all the perovskite materials. An extremely low amplified spontaneous emission threshold of 7.5 µJ cm-2 is obtained under excitation by a nanosecond laser, which is comparable to that obtained using femtosecond lasers in other recent studies.

BACKGROUND: Pine pollen, a kind of Chinese traditional medicine, is rich in unsaturated fatty acids. During its processing, it is often needed to break the sporoderm in order to increase the availability of some ingredients, which can cause lipid oxidation and the development of rancidity during storage. RESULTS: The primal peroxide value (PV) of ultra-high-temperature short-time sterilization sporoderm-broken pine pollen (UHT-PP) was much higher (over 15 times) than raw pine pollen (R-PP) and 60 Co-irradiation sterilization sporoderm-broken pine pollen (60 Co-PP). The PV of UHT-PP first increased and then decreased shortly after; however, PV of R-PP and 60 Co-PP remained almost unchanged during storage. The volatiles associated with rancidity in UHT-PP were found to be significantly higher than 60 Co-PP, especially hexanal (nearly 30 times) and hexanoic acid (about 2 times), and a multi-organoleptic sensor analyzer (electronic nose system) was able to differentiate these three kinds of samples when the output was subjected to discriminant function analysis. During storage (30 days), hexanal first increased and then decreased (at about 5 days), and hexanoic acid continuously increased for UHT-PP; however, no significant change was noted for R-PP or 60 Co-PP. UHT-PP has a greater surface area than 60 Co-PP, although same sporoderm-broken processes were applied. Antioxidants (flavone, carotenoid and tocopherols, sterol compounds) in 60 Co-PP were significantly (P ≤ 0.05, by Duncan's multiple range test) higher than that in UHT-PP, although not significantly different for total phenolics. CONCLUSIONS: Rancidity occurs more readily in UHT-PP than in R-PP and 60 Co-PP during storage, probably because significant lipid oxidation and antioxidant degradation occurred during the UHT sterilization sporoderm-broken processing of pine pollen. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

The increasing demand for functional foods has boosted up the food industry to produce fiber-enriched products. In this study, dietary fiber (DF) was isolated from Doum fruit by exploiting the combination of microwave reactor technique and superfine grinding technology. The isolated Doum dietary fiber (DDF) possessed a high content of total dietary fiber, essential minerals and total polyphenols with good antioxidant activity. Biscuits were prepared by substituting wheat flour with DDF at different levels (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10%) and assessed for dough mixing properties and biscuit quality. The results showed that an increase of DDF in the flour affected physical parameters of biscuits by increasing the biscuits hardness and reducing the diameter, thickness and spread ratio. Supplementation of biscuits with DDF improved the nutritional value in terms of DF contents and essential minerals. Improvement in total phenolic contents (TPC) and antioxidant activities of the biscuits were also noted as a result of DDF supplementation. Biscuits supplemented with 7.5% DDF showed overall better sensorial characteristics. Conclusively, this study has shown that supplementation of wheat flour with DDF improved nutritional profile, antioxidant properties and overall consumer acceptability of biscuits. The present findings will be helpful regarding the development of functional foods enriched with DDF.

ABSTRACT

QDs-doped polymer microfibers are fabricated through direct drawing method. By adding the polymethylmethacrylate into polystyrene, the surface quality and flexibility of microfiber are improved. Under direct excitation by the focused laser, the polymer microfibers doped with different quantum dots emit different colors and act as an optical waveguide. The waveguide properties of the microfiber are studied in detail. It is found that refractive index of the substrate and diameter of microfiber are the most important factors that affect the optical loss of this waveguide. The microfiber does not produce significant polarization after being deposited on the substrate. Moreover, exciting the QDs-doped polymer microfiber through a blue LED is demonstrated. This structure may find widespread applications in integrated photonic devices.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: During vegetable cooking, one of the most notable and common chemical reactions is the Maillard reaction, which occurs as a result of thermal treatment and dehydration. Amadori compound determination provides a very sensitive indicator for early detection of quality changes caused by the Maillard reaction, as well as to retrospectively assess the heat treatment or storage conditions to which the product has been subjected. In this paper, a hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatographic-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometric method was developed for the analysis of eight Amadori compounds, and the initial steps of the Maillard reaction during cooking (steaming, frying and baking) bell pepper, red pepper, yellow onion, purple onion, tomato and carrot were also assessed by quantitative determination of these Amadori compounds. RESULTS: These culinary treatments reduced moisture and increased the total content of Amadori compounds, which was not dependent on the type of vegetable or cooking method. Moreover, the effect of steaming on Amadori compound content and water loss was less than that by baking and frying vegetables. Further studies showed that the combination of high temperature and short time may lead to lower formation of Amadori compounds when baking vegetables. CONCLUSION: Culinary methods differently affected the extent of initial Maillard reaction when vegetables were made into home-cooked products. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

A novel graphene oxide (GO) nanosuspension liquid-based microfluidic tactile sensor is developed. It comprises a UV ozone-bonded Ecoflex-polydimethylsiloxane microfluidic assembly filled with GO nanosuspension, which serves as the working fluid of the tactile sensor. This device is highly flexible and able to withstand numerous modes of deformation as well as distinguish various user-applied mechanical forces it is subjected to, including pressing, stretching, and bending. This tactile sensor is also highly deformable and wearable, and capable of recognizing and differentiating distinct hand muscle-induced motions, such as finger flexing and fist clenching. Moreover, subtle differences in the handgrip strength derived from the first clenching gesture can be identified based on the electrical response of our device. This work highlights the potential application of the GO nanosuspension liquid-based flexible microfluidic tactile sensing platform as a wearable diagnostic and prognostic device for real-time health monitoring. Also importantly, this work can further facilitate the exploration and potential realization of a functional liquid-state device technology with superior mechanical flexibility and conformability.

ABSTRACT

The detection of Amadori compounds poorly absorbing in the UV region is challenging. To cope with this problem, a simple and effective method using ligand-exchange and sweeping capillary electrophoresis was first developed. With this method, Amadori compounds can be detected by UV at 236 nm without derivatization steps and separated based on the stable levels of Amadori compound-Cu(2+) complexes. Under optimal conditions with background electrolyte of 50 mmol/L copper sulfate, pH 3.94, and separation voltage 25 kV, baseline separations of the following five Amadori compounds, N-(1-deoxy-D-fructos-1-yl) valine (Fru-Val), N-(1-deoxy-D-fructos-1-yl) leucine (Fru-Leu), N-(1-deoxy-D-fructos-1-yl) alanine (Fru-Ala), N-(1-deoxy-D-fructos-1-yl) methionine (Fru-Met), N-(1-deoxy-D-fructos-1-yl) glutamic acid (Fru-Glu), were achieved within a 20 min run. The method was applied to analyze these Amadori compounds in two tomato products. Fru-Glu could be quantitated sensitively down to 0.706 mg/L in MS powder (a kind of tomato powder), 0.726 mg/L in MS liquid (a kind of concentrated tomato juice), and the limit of quantification for the others ranged from 0.792 to 1.084 mg/L. The most abundant Amadori compound was Fru-Glu (1057.5 mg/100 g) in MS powder; however, Fru-Met was rarely detected in MS liquid. The accuracy of the method was tested by recovery measurement of the spiked samples, which yielded good results (94.2-106.0%) with relative standard deviation lower than 5%. Simultaneously, the method was also applied in the analysis of Fru-Glu content during a tomato puree evaporating concentration process. The first significant increase in Fru-Glu content coincided with the increment rate of soluble solids, which indicated that fast evaporation of water could be a critical step for the formation of Amadori compounds. These results show that this method is convenient and reliable for rapid analysis of Amadori compounds in tomato products.

ABSTRACT

In this current study, the internal structure of nanostructured lipid carriers was modulated by phospholipids (lecithin PC, hydrogenated soybean phospholipid HPC) and solid lipids to achieve stable encapsulation of citral. The presence of high melting point HPC could construct α-crystalline type with more lattice defects and effectively inhibit ß-ization. The HPC group could maintain the particle size at 155.9-186.9 nm, the polydispersity index (PDI) at 0.182-0.321, the Zeta potential at -57.58 mV to -49.35 mV and the retention rate of citral at 91.33-98.49 % in the acidic environments of 2 mM and 20 mM hydrochloric acid solutions. The recrystallization index (RI) of NLC increased with the number of solid lipid ester bonds (from 3.57 % to 16.58 % in the PC group and from 0.82 % to 12.47 % in the HPC group). The results illustrated that the number of solid lipid ester bonds and the melting point of phospholipids affected crystallinity of the lipid matrix and thus the stability of encapsulated citral. Hydrogenated phospholipid with high melting points was more beneficial in stabilizing citral. The present study improved the acidic stability of citral and provided a new thought for the application of citral in acidic beverages.
