ABSTRACT

Electrostatic gating has emerged as a powerful technique for tailoring the magnetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) magnets, offering exciting prospects including enhancement of magnetic anisotropy, boosting Curie temperature, and strengthening exchange coupling effects. Here, we focus on electrical control of the ferromagnetic resonance of the quasi-2D Kagome magnet Cu(1,3-bdc). By harnessing an electrostatic field through ionic liquid gating, significant shifts are observed in the ferromagnetic resonance field in both out-of-plane and in-plane measurements. Moreover, the effective magnetization and gyromagnetic ratios display voltage-dependent variations. A closer examination reveals that the voltage-induced changes can modulate magnetocrystalline anisotropy by several hundred gauss, while the impact on orbital magnetization remains relatively subtle. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal varying d-orbital hybridizations at different voltages. This research unveils intricate physics within the Kagome lattice magnet and further underscores the potential of electrostatic manipulation in steering magnetism with promising implications for the development of spintronic devices.

ABSTRACT

Spin current generation from charge current in nonmagnetic materials promises an energy-efficient scheme for manipulating magnetization in spintronic devices. In some asymmetric two-dimensional (2D) materials, the Rashba and valley effects coexist owing to strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which induces the spin Hall effect due to spin-momentum locking of both effects. Herein, we propose a new Janus structure MoSiAs2Se with both valley physics and the Rashba effect and reveal an effective way to modulate the properties of this structure. The results demonstrated that applying an external electric field is an effective means to modulating the electronic properties of MoSiAs2Se, leading to both type I-II phase transitions and semiconductor-metal phase transitions. Furthermore, the coexistence of the Rashba and valley effects in monolayer MoSiAs2Se contributes to the spin Hall effect (SHE). The magnitude and direction of spin Hall conductivity can also be manipulated with an out-of-plane electric field. Our results enrich the physics and materials of the Rashba and valley systems, opening new opportunities for the applications of 2D Janus materials in spintronic devices.

ABSTRACT

The valley polarization, induced by the magnetic proximity effect, in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), has attracted significant attention due to the intriguing fundamental physics. However, the enhancement and modulation of valley polarization for real device applications is still a challenge. Here, using first-principles calculations we investigate the valley polarization properties of monolayer TMDCs CrS2 and CrSe2 and how to enhance the valley polarization by constructing Janus CrSSe (with an internal electric field) and modulate the polarization in CrSSe by applying external electric fields. Janus CrSSe exhibits inversion symmetry breaking, internal electric field, spin-orbit coupling, and compelling spin-valley coupling. A magnetic substrate of the MnO2 monolayer can induce a modest magnetic moment in CrSe2, CrSe2, and CrSSe. Notably, the Janus structure with an internal electric field has a much larger valley p compared with its non-Janus counterparts. Moreover, the strength of valley polarization can be further modulated by applying external electric fields. These findings suggest that Janus materials hold promise for designing and developing advanced valleytronic devices.

ABSTRACT

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and HER2-positive breast cancer are particularly aggressive and the effectiveness of current therapies for them is limited. TNBC lacks effective therapies and HER2-positive cancer is often resistant to HER2-targeted drugs after an initial response. The recent studies have demonstrated that the combination of JAK2 inhibitors and SMO inhibitors can effectively inhibit the growth and metastasis of TNBC and HER2-positive drug resistant breast cancer cells. In this study, deep reinforcement learning was used to learn the characteristics of existing small molecule inhibitors of JAK2 and SMO, and to generate a novel library of small molecule compounds that may be able to inhibit both JAK2 and SMO. Subsequently, the molecule library was screened by molecular docking and a total of 7 compounds were selected out as dual inhibitors of JAK2 and SMO. Molecular dynamics simulations and binding free energies showed that the top three compounds stably bound to both JAK2 and SMO proteins. The binding free energies and hydrogen bond occupancy of key amino acids indicate that A8976 and A10625 has good properties and could be a potential dual-target inhibitor of JAK2 and SMO.

ABSTRACT

A novel two-dimensional carbon allotrope has been proposed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The cell contains 24 carbon atoms and is composed of five-, six-, and seven-membered rings, named LC567. It is low in energy and has excellent dynamic, thermal, and mechanical stability. Our results demonstrate that the theoretical capacity of monolayer LC567 is up to 1117 mA h g-1, and the lithium diffusion barrier is also very low, around 0.18 eV, which is superior to graphene and most reported two-dimensional anode materials. In addition, LC567 exhibits quite low open circuit voltage during the process of Li ion insertion. For the bulk of LC567, it still exhibits high capacity and ideal open circuit voltage, revealing its potential application as an anode for lithium batteries. Meanwhile, we discuss the mechanism of the high capacity and low diffusion barrier of LC567 as an anode material for lithium batteries, and find that the high capacity and low diffusion barrier properties may be related to the pentagonal carbon rings (C5).

AIMS: To explore predictors of lymphedema self-management behaviours among Chinese breast cancer survivors based on the Integrated Theory of Health Behaviour Change, and to clarify the interrelationship among these variables. DESIGN: Further analysis of a multicentre cross-sectional and survey-based study. METHODS: A total of 586 participants with breast cancer were recruited from December 2021 to April 2022 in different cities in China. We used self-reported questionnaires to collect data. Descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis and structural equation model were performed. RESULTS: The Integrated Theory of Health Behaviour Change is suitable for predicting lymphedema self-management behaviours. The final structural model showed good model fit. Social support, self-efficacy and lymphedema knowledge positively affected lymphedema self-management behaviours, directly and indirectly. Self-regulation acted as a crucial mediator between these variables and self-management. The direct path between social support and self-regulation was not significant. Lymphedema knowledge and social support also influenced self-management via illness perception, self-efficacy and self-regulation, sequentially. These variables explained 55.9% of the variance in lymphedema self-management behaviours. CONCLUSIONS: The modified model based on the Integrated Theory of Health Behaviour Change fitted well in predicting lymphedema self-management behaviours among breast cancer patients. Lymphedema knowledge, illness perception, self-efficacy, social support and self-regulation directly and indirectly influenced lymphedema self-management behaviours. IMPACT: This study provides a theoretical basis for the assessment and interventions of lymphedema self-management behaviours in breast cancer patients. Lymphedema self-management behaviours should be assessed regularly and comprehensively, taking these predictors into consideration to identify potential barriers. Further research is needed to explore effective interventions integrating these significant predictors. REPORTING METHOD: This study was reported following Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist for cross-sectional studies. The results can be applied among patients with other chronic diseases or high-risk populations, and inspire the assessment and interventions facilitating self-management behaviours. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: For breast cancer patients with poor lymphedema self-management behaviour, attention should be raised among nurses and involved healthcare staffs that lymphedema self-management is multi-faced. Strategies targeted at improving social support, self-regulation, knowledge, self-efficacy and illness perception should be also addressed in lymphedema self-management programs, to facilitate more effective improvement of lymphedema self-management behaviours.

ABSTRACT

We explore spin dynamics in Cu(1,3-bdc), a quasi-2D topological magnon insulator. The results show that the thermal evolution of the Landé g factor (g) is anisotropic: gin-plane decreases while gout-of-plane increases with increasing temperature T. Moreover, the anisotropy of the g factor (Δg) and the anisotropy of saturation magnetization (ΔMs) are correlated below 4 K, but they diverge above 4 K. We show that the electronic orbital moment contributes to the g anisotropy at lower T, while the topological orbital moment induced by thermally excited spin chirality dictates the g anisotropy at higher T. Our work suggests an interplay among topology, spin chirality, and orbital magnetism in Cu(1,3-bdc).

ABSTRACT

New variations of SARS-CoV-2 continue to emerge in the global pandemic, which may be resistant to at least some vaccines in COVID-19, indicating that drug and vaccine development must be continuously strengthened. NSP10 plays an essential role in SARS-CoV-2 viral life cycle. It stimulates the enzymatic activities of NSP14-ExoN and NSP16-O-MTase by the formation of NSP10/NSP14 and NSP10/NSP16 complexes. Inhibiting NSP10 can block the binding of NSP10 to NSP14 and NSP16. This study has identified potential natural NSP10 inhibitors from ZINC database. The protein druggable pocket was identified for screening candidates. Molecular docking of the selected compounds was performed and MM-GBSA binding energy was calculated. After ADMET assessment, 4 hits were obtained for favorable druggability. The analysis of site interactions suggested that the hits all had excellent binding. Molecular dynamics studies revealed that selected natural compounds stably bind to NSP10. These compounds were identified as potential leads against NSP10 for the development of strategies to combat SARS-CoV-2 replication and could serve as the basis for further studies.

Studies regarding malnutrition in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) using the Global Leadership Initiative in Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria are still limited. Our study aimed to investigate the prevalence of malnutrition using the GLIM criteria in NPC patients receiving radiotherapy and explore the relationship between pre-radiotherapy (pre-RT) malnutrition and survival. A total of 113 NPC patients were enrolled for nutritional assessment using the GLIM criteria at different radiotherapeutic time points, and related toxicities were graded. Regarding the results, 19 patients (16.8%) were malnourished before radiotherapy and 103 patients (91.2%) were malnourished at the end of radiotherapy. Among the phenotypic GLIM criteria, low fat-free muscle index (FFMI) before radiotherapy was associated with mucositis and radiodermatitis (p < 0.05). Importantly, patients with malnutrition before radiotherapy had significantly poorer 2-year progression free survival (PFS) than the patients being well-nourished (62.1% vs. 88.9%, p = 0.015). From the multivariate Cox regression model, being-well nourished before radiotherapy was the protective factor for PFS (HR: 0.27; 95%CI: 0.089-0.85; p = 0.023) and male was the risk factor for PFS (HR: 7.25; 95%CI: 1.548-34.00; p = 0.012). In conclusion, malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria is common in NPC patients undergoing radiotherapy, and pre-RT malnutrition is correlated with survival.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/01635581.2022.2044059.

OBJECTIVES: The study was aimed to develop and evaluate a lymphoedema self-management behaviour questionnaire (LSMBQ) for breast cancer patients. METHODS: The initial version of the behaviour questionnaire was developed based on the framework of self-management and the evidence summary of lymphoedema self-management. Two rounds of expert consultation were conducted to validate the questionnaire's content validity. A cross-sectional survey was then conducted in breast wards of two hospitals in China to evaluate the reliability and validity of this scale. Exploratory structural equation model was used to test the construct validity. T-test was used to analyse the known group validity. Structural equation model was applied to verify the relationship between self-efficacy, social support, and lymphoedema self-management behaviour to test the convergent validity. Also, the internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability were evaluated. RESULTS: The questionnaire's content validity was satisfactory. There were 22 items included in the LSMBQ for validation and 260 completed the survey. A six-factor structure with good construct validity was identified. The result of t-test verified that patients who knew the risk of lymphoedema and those who received lymphoedema health education had higher scores of lymphoedema self-management behaviours (P < 0.05), indicating that the questionnaire has good known group validity. The fitting results of the structural equation model indicated that the 22-item questionnaire had good convergent validity. Cronbach's alpha coefficients and test-retest reliability for the total questionnaire were 0.910 and 0.875, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The 22-item LSMBQ appears to have adequate reliability and validity to assess the lymphoedema self-management behaviours for breast cancer patients.

AIMS: To determine job stress among Chinese operating room nurses, test the mediating effect of burnout and verify the moderating effect of over-commitment between job stress and mental health. DESIGN: A descriptive, cross-sectional study. METHODS: A multistage sampling method was adopted. First, a random sampling method was used to select 30 tertiary hospitals in Beijing, after which 509 operating room nurses were selected by convenience sampling from March-June 2017. Self-administered questionnaires were used to evaluate job stress, burnout, and organizational commitment among participants. Multiple-group path analysis was used to test the mediating effect and the moderating effect. RESULTS: Of all nurses, 70.3% were in a state of job stress, which had negative effects on organizational commitment mediated by emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. The result of multiple-group path analysis showed that the path coefficients are different between the low and high groups of over-commitment. When facing job stress, operating room nurses with low over-commitment were more likely to have emotional exhaustion (ß = 0.750 vs. 0.602), while those with high over-commitment were more likely to have low organizational commitment (ß = -0.641 vs. -0.594). CONCLUSION: The job stress of operating room nurses in China was high. Burnout played a mediating role between job stress and organizational commitment. Over-commitment played a moderating role in the relationship among job stress, burnout, and organizational commitment. IMPACT: This study analysed the relationship among operating room nurses' job stress, burnout, and organizational commitment. The findings provided confirmatory support on the mediated effect of burnout between job stress and organizational commitment and the moderation effect of over-commitment. Different measures are needed to reduce job stress, as for easing burnout and improving organizational commitment among different groups of nurses.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) represent invasive tumor cell populations and provide a noninvasive solution to the clinical management and research of tumors. Characterization of CTCs at single-cell resolution enables the comprehensive understanding of tumor heterogeneity and may benefit the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients. However, most efforts have been made on enumeration and detection of CTCs, while little focus has been directed to single-cell study. Herein, an integrated microfluidic platform for single-cell isolation and analysis was established. After validating this platform on lung cancer cell lines, we detected and isolated single CTCs from the peripheral blood samples of 20 cancer patients before and after one treatment cycle. Furthermore, we performed single-cell whole-exome DNA sequencing on a single CTC from the peripheral blood sample of a representative early stage lung cancer patient. Among the blood samples of 20 patients, 15 of them were positive for CTC detection (75.0% detectable rate). Single-cell analysis revealed detailed genetic variations of the CTC, while six new gene mutations were detected in both single CTC and surgical specimen. This study provides a useful tool for the isolation and analysis of single CTCs from peripheral blood samples, which not only facilitates the early diagnosis of cancers but also helps to unravel the genetic information of tumor at a single-cell level. © 2019 International Society for Advancement of Cytometry.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction secondary to chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has been highly associated with impaired quality of life. Asian CRS patients showed a distinct inflammatory profile, with less type 2 endotype compared with European and North American. This study aimed to explore the pattern of the inflammatory cytokines in CRS patients from China and their association with olfactory function. METHODS: Institutional review board-approved prospective study in which the olfactory function of 71 CRS patients was assessed with Sniffin' Sticks before the nasal endoscopic surgery. A set of cytokines and inflammatory mediators including type 1 and type 2 inflammatory cytokines were measured in nasal mucus by using a multiplex flow cytometric bead assay (CBA). Baseline characteristics in CRS patients were collected and the Spearman r statistic was performed to assess the association of olfactory function with cytokines and inflammatory mediators. RESULTS: A total of 71 nasal mucus samples of CRS patients, including 25 chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyposis (CRSsNP) patients and 46 chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) patients, were evaluated in this study. The nasal mucus levels of type 1 inflammatory cytokine IFN-γ (interferon-γ), type 2 inflammatory cytokines including IL-4, IL-5 and GM-CSF (granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor) and anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 were significantly and inversely correlated with olfactory function in total patients with CRS (r = -0.308, p = 0.009; r = -0.250, p = 0.036; r = -0.399, p = 0.001; r = -0.269, p = 0.023; r = -0.273, p = 0.021, respectively). In CRSsNP, the olfactory function was inversely correlated with levels of type 1 inflammatory cytokine TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-α) (r = -0.637, p = 0.001) and IL-10 (r = -0.468, p = 0.018). Nevertheless, the olfactory function in CRSwNP was inversely correlated with type 2 inflammatory cytokines including IL-4 (r = -0.303, p = 0.041) and IL-5 (r = -0.383, p = 0.009). CONCLUSION: Both type 1 and type 2 inflammatory cytokines may contribute to the pathogenesis of CRS-associated olfactory dysfunction in the Chinese population.

AIMS: To describe turnover intention of emergency nurses and clarify the effects of organizational commitment, job satisfaction and workplace violence on turnover intention. BACKGROUND: Research has showed the predictors of turnover intention differed among nurses of different specialties. However, research on turnover intention has mostly focused on general nurses rather than emergency nurses. DESIGN: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 415 emergency nurses in Beijing, China, using convenience sampling. Path analysis was used to test the relationships between organizational commitment, job satisfaction, workplace violence and turnover intention. RESULTS: Most emergency nurses (90.2%) had a high level or very high level of turnover intention. Contrary to previous studies, organizational commitment had a significant direct positive effect on workplace violence. It also had a direct positive effect on job satisfaction and a negative effect on turnover intention. Workplace violence had a negative effect on job satisfaction and a positive effect on turnover intention. Job satisfaction had a direct negative effect on turnover intention. CONCLUSION: To reduce turnover intention in the emergency department, measures should be taken to reduce workplace violence and increase nurses' job satisfaction, especially those with high organizational commitment.

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction is one of the most important early indicators of atherosclerosis in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. Endothelial cell specific molecules-1 (ESM-1), which is a novel endothelial dysfunction marker that may be linked to cardiovascular disease. We investigated to assess whether circulating ESM-1 levels are correlated with the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with OSA. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study in 228 Chinese OSA subjects, including 185 patients with OSA and 43 controls. The Gensini stenosis scoring system was used to assess the severity of CAD. Circulating ESM-1 levels were measured by Human Magnetic Luminex Screening Assay. The associations between circulating ESM-1 levels and CAD were determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The association between ESM-1 levels and Gensini scores was determined by multivariate linear regression analysis. RESULTS: CAD patients had significantly higher circulating ESM-1 levels compared with non-CAD patients (1279.01[918.52-1770.71] pg/ml vs 585.46[423.61-812.56] pg/ml, P < 0.001). After adjusting for confounding factors, we found that circulating ESM-1 levels were an independent risk factor for CAD (OR = 1.633/100 pg ESM-1, 95%CI =1.179-2.262, P = 0.003), while circulating ESM-1 levels have no significant correlation with the Gensini score. Furthermore, circulating ESM-1 showed higher discriminatory accuracy in predicting the presence of OSA (AUC:0.910). CONCLUSIONS: Circulating ESM-1 might function as a useful biomarker for monitoring the development and progression of CAD in OSA patients.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation of tissue eosinophil count and chemosensory functions in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study including 40 patients with a history of ESS for CRSwNP recruited consecutively. Visual analog scale score and the Lund-Kennedy endoscopic score were recorded. Biopsies of the ethmoidal sinus mucosal were performed and evaluated. Chemosensory functions were measured by Sniffin' Sticks and chemosensory event-related potentials (CSERP). The associations between chemosensory functions and tissue eosinophil count were analyzed using Spearman correlation and partial correlation after adjusting the confounding factors. Kendall's tau-b correlation was performed between sneezing score and CSERP with ethyl alcohol (EAL) stimulation. RESULTS: Olfactory and trigeminal nerve function was successfully evaluated using CSERP. Postoperative tissue eosinophil count was correlated with threshold (T) score (partial correlation coefficient r = - 0.460, p = 0.012) and CSERP peak latency for olfactory (N1: partial r = 0.471, p = 0.010; P2: partial r = 0.487, p = 0.007) and mixed olfactory-trigeminal (N1: partial r = - 0.516, p = 0.008; P2: partial r = - 0.590, p = 0.002). There were also correlations between T score and N1 latency with phenyl ethyl alcohol (PEA) (partial r = - 0.560, p < 0.001), between sneezing score and N1 latency with EAL (Kendall's tau-b = - 0.40, p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative tissue eosinophilia is significantly associated with postoperative olfactory disorders as assessed by Sniffin' Sticks and CSERP peak latency. Furthermore, olfaction as measured by T score correlates with olfactory ERP latency in inflammation-associated olfactory dysfunction. Trigeminal sensitivity also appears to relate to tissue eosinophilia, indicating mucosal inflammation can affect both sensory systems in the nose.

ABSTRACT

Cooperative localization (CL) is considered a promising method for underwater localization with respect to multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (multi-AUVs). In this paper, we proposed a CL algorithm based on information entropy theory and the probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter, aiming to enhance the global localization accuracy of the follower. In the proposed framework, the follower carries lower cost navigation systems, whereas the leaders carry better ones. Meanwhile, the leaders acquire the followers' observations, including both measurements and clutter. Then, the PHD filters are utilized on the leaders and the results are communicated to the followers. The followers then perform weighted summation based on all received messages and obtain a final positioning result. Based on the information entropy theory and the PHD filter, the follower is able to acquire a precise knowledge of its position.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: We explored the expression and prognostic value of GALNT6 and the tumor microenvironment of pan-cancer in humans. Methods: In this study, we explored the expression pattern of GALNT6 pan-cancer across multiple databases. The prognostic value of GALNT6 was evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The types and numbers of GALNT6 gene alterations were exhibited using the cBio Cancer Genomics Portal. The correlations between GALNT6 expression and immune infiltration in cancers were analyzed using the database Tumor Immune Estimation Resource 2. We also used the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway and Gene Ontology analysis to investigate the molecular mechanisms of the GALNT6 gene in tumorigenesis. The expression of GALNT6 was also further verified by qPCR in lung adenocarcinoma tissues. Results: In general, compared with normal tissue, tumor tissue had a higher expression level of GALNT6. GALNT6 showed a protective effect in colon carcinoma and other cancers; however, a high expression level of GALNT6 was detrimental to survival in bladder cancer and in pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. Mutation, amplification, and deep deletion were the three main types of GALNT6 mutations in tumors. There was a significant positive correlation between GALNT6 expression and immune infiltration of CD8+ T-cells in skin cutaneous melanoma metastasis, based on most of the algorithms used. Moreover, protein processing- and glycoprotein metabolic-associated functions were involved in the functional mechanisms of GALNT6. Conclusion: This first pan-cancer study offers a relatively comprehensive understanding of the oncogenic roles of GALNT6 across different cancer types.

Objective: Effective self-management support should be tailored to the individual. To provide personalized and targeted self-management support, a rigorous assessment tool is needed to screen the actual degree of lymphedema self-management support received by breast cancer survivors. This study aims to develop and psychometrically test the Lymphedema Self-Management Support Scale for Breast Cancer Survivors (LSMS-BCs). Methods: This study involves two phases: scale development and psychometric testing. In the scale development phase, preliminary items and domains were identified through a qualitative meta-synthesis, a quantitative systematic review, and reference to previous similar scales. Expert consultation and pilot study were conducted to refine the scale and evaluate the content validity. The psychometric characteristics were tested with 447 participants using item analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), reliability assessments, as well as measurement invariance. Results: A preliminary 21-item scale with four domains, basic management support, management support for limb volume reduction, role management support, and emotional management support, was constructed in the scale development phase and well supported by EFA and CFA. The scale-level content validity index was 0.983. Cronbach's α coefficient for overall scale and subscales ranged from 0.732 to 0.949. McDonald's ω ranged from 0.848 to 0.955. Excellent known-groups validity, concurrent validity, predictive validity, and measurement invariance were demonstrated. Conclusions: The LSMS-BCs is psychometrically valid and reliable. It can serve as a valuable tool for assessing and understanding the lymphedema self-management support received by breast cancer survivors.
