ABSTRACT

Introduction of the trifluoromethyl (CF3) group into organic compounds has garnered substantial interest because of its significant role in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Here, we report a hydroxylamine-mediated radical process for C(sp2)-H trifluoromethylation of terminal alkenes. The reaction shows good reactivity, impressive E/Z selectivity (up to >20 : 1), and broad functional group compatibility. Expansion of this approach to perfluoroalkylation and late-stage trifluoromethylation of bioactive molecules demonstrates its promising application potential. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction follows a radical addition and subsequent elimination pathway.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an upper airway inflammation disease associated with hypoxia-mediated inflammation. The effect of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) on NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation in the pathogenesis of sinonasal mucosa is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effect and mechanism of HIF-1α on NLRP3 inflammasome activation in the primary human nasal epithelial cells (hNECs). METHODS: We measured the expression levels of HIF-1α and the NLRP3 inflammasome in nasal biopsy samples and hNECs derived from negative controls (healthy) and patients with CRS with and without nasal polyps, then further analyzed the specific mechanism of HIF-1α regulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and its effect on hNEC differentiation. RESULTS: Increased mRNA and protein expression levels of HIF-1α and the NLRP3 inflammasome were found in all CRS biopsy samples. HIF-1α enhanced expression of phosphorylated NLRP3 (S295) in both HEK293T cells and hNECs; it also promoted recruitment of caspase-1 and apoptotic speck-like protein containing caspase recruitment domain (aka ASC) by NLRP3. HIF-1α also improved NLRP3's stability by preventing NLRP3 degradation caused by hypoxia-mediated inflammation. In addition, HIF-1α could also increase expression of Mucin5AC and decrease expression of α-tubulin by promoting activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in hNECs. In addition, HIF-1α could also directly promote P63 expression in hNECs. CONCLUSION: HIF-1α could potentially induce cilia loss and enhance the proliferation of goblet cells, possibly mediated by the regulation of NLRP3 phosphorylation in CRS inflammation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between patient satisfaction of outcomes and tooth color changes during and after tooth bleaching. METHODS: In this clinical trial, 63 volunteers participated in an in-office bleaching procedure using a 40% hydrogen peroxide gel. The treatment consisted of two sessions, each comprising two 30-min applications of the bleaching gel. The L*, a*, and b* values of six maxillary anterior teeth were measured at baseline (T1), after the first bleaching session (T2), after the second bleaching session (T3), 1 week after the second in-office bleaching session (T4), and 3 weeks after the second in-office bleaching session (T5). The color differences (ΔE00 ) were calculated using CIEDE2000. A satisfaction scale with a score ranging from 0 to 3 was used to record participants' level of satisfaction with their tooth color at each time point. The data were statistically analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance and logistic regression (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Significant correlations were observed between ΔL*, Δb*, and ΔE00 values at T3 and patient satisfaction (all p < 0.05). The regression model indicated a more pronounced impact of Δb* on patient satisfaction compared to ΔL*. The established regression models were as follows: Logit (PL*b* ) = -4.354 + 0.271ΔL* - 0.585Δb* and Logit (PΔE00 ) = -2.552 + 0.521ΔE00 . The findings suggested a minimum ΔE00 value of 4.90 for satisfactory results. A minimum ΔE00 value of 3.9, 5.0, and 6.8 was necessary for central incisors, lateral incisors, and canines, respectively, to achieve a satisfactory result. CONCLUSIONS: The ΔL*, Δb*, and ΔE00 values were found to be significantly correlated with patient satisfaction after bleaching. Δb* was identified as having a greater influence on patient satisfaction than ΔL* values in the regression model. Furthermore, attaining a minimum ΔE00 value of 4.90 is necessary to achieve satisfactory outcomes. A greater ΔE00 value is needed for canines than for incisors to achieve equivalent patient satisfaction. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study emphasizes the importance of considering the extent of color change needed to achieve patient satisfaction after tooth bleaching procedures.

ABSTRACT

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the nasal cavity characterized by excessive nasal mucus secretion and nasal congestion. The development of CRS is related to pathological mechanisms induced by hypoxia. Under hypoxic conditions, the stable expression of both Hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) α and HIF-2α are involved in the immune response and inflammatory pathways of CRS. The imbalance in the composition of nasal microbiota may affect the hypoxic state of CRS and perpetuate existing inflammation. Hypoxia affects the differentiation of nasal epithelial cells such as ciliated cells and goblet cells, induces fibroblast proliferation, and leads to epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and tissue remodeling. Hypoxia also affects the proliferation and differentiation of macrophages, eosinophils, basophils, and mast cells in sinonasal mucosa, and thus influences the inflammatory state of CRS by regulating T cells and B cells. Given the multifactorial nature in which HIF is linked to CRS, this study aims to elucidate the effect of hypoxia on the pathogenic mechanisms of CRS.

ABSTRACT

Electrochemical C(sp3) - H oxygenation of phenols derivatives were accomplished using H2O as the sole oxygen source. Thus, selectively oxidative 4-cresols to 4-acylphenols derivatives proved viable with the aid of indirect electrolysis, through metal- and external oxidant free environmental-friendly and safe electrocatalytic conditions. Advances of this strategy were proved by its ability to transform various sulfonamides with excellent site and regioselectivity. Detailed mechanistic studies allowed to delineate the exact profile of the generation of the oxygenation events.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationships between non-muscle invasive bladder cancer molecular subtypes and predict the efficacy of intravesical chemotherapy with pirarubicin, pharmorubicin and gemcitabine. METHODS: A total of 160 patients with T1 stage non-muscle invasive bladder cancer were enrolled in this study. Fifty-three patients underwent anthracycline (Pirarubicin and Pharmorubicin) therapy and 107 patients accepted gemcitabine therapy. Uroplakin II and CK20 were categorized as immunohistochemistry (IHC) markers for luminal subtype, whereas CK5/6 and CD44 were categorized as immunohistochemistry markers for basal subtype. The cluster results with immunohistochemical score indicated that non-muscle invasive bladder cancer can be subgrouped into three major classes. RESULTS: Class 2 showed the luminal-like characteristics, whereas class 3 showed the basal-like characteristics. Class 1 showed no high expression of luminal or basal-associated immunohistochemistry markers. The molecular subtype is an independent risk factor for recurrence-free survival (P = 0.030) and progression-free survival (P = 0.006) in patients with T1 stage non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. In class 1 and class 2 (luminal-like) subtypes, gemcitabine and anthracycline show no difference in recurrence-free survival and progression-free survival. Gemcitabine was associated with reduced recurrence compared with anthracycline (P = 0.039) in class 3 (basal-like) subtypes and show no difference in decreasing progression. CONCLUSIONS: The molecular classification based on immunohistochemical results is an independent risk factor for the prognosis of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer with T1 stage. Different therapeutic methods should be selected according to different molecular subtypes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Anterolateral thigh (ALT) free flap and jejunal flap (JF) were commonly used in tissue reconstruction for pharyngoesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (PESCC) with worsening tissue adhesion and necrosis after radiotherapy failure. However, the results of tissue reconstruction and postoperative complications of these two flaps are controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes between group ALT free flap and group JF in PESCC after radiotherapy failure. METHODS: Intraoperative information and postoperative outcomes of patients with PESCC after radiotherapy failure who underwent ALT and JF reconstruction from January 2005 to December 2019 were compared and analyzed. RESULTS: The defect size of ALT (Numbers, 34) and JF (Numbers, 31) was 36.19 ± 11.35 cm2 and 35.58 ± 14.32 cm2 (p = 0.884), respectively. ALT and JF showed no significant difference in operation time (p = 0.683) and blood loss (p = 0.198). For postoperative outcomes within 30 days both in recipient site and donor site including wound bleeding, wound dehiscence, wound infection, and pharyngocutaneous fistula, ALT free flap and JF showed similar results. Flap compromise (Numbers, 2 VS.3, p = 0.663), flap take backs (Numbers, 1 VS.1, p = 1.000), partial flap failures (Numbers, 4 VS.2, p = 0.674), and total flap failures (Numbers, 0 VS.0, p = 1.000) showed no difference between the two groups. In addition, no significance was found in hypoproteinemia between the two groups (Numbers, 4 VS.2, p = 0.674). ALT free flap was not statistically different from JF in the incidence of dysphagia at the postoperative 6 months (Numbers of liquid diet, 5VS.5; Numbers of partial tube feeding, 6VS.7; Numbers of total tube feeding, 3VS.1, p = 0.790) and 12 months (Numbers of liquid diet, 8VS.7; Numbers of partial tube feeding, 8VS.7; Numbers of total tube feeding, 5VS.5, p = 0.998). The cause of dysphagia not found to differ between the two groups both in postoperative 6 months (p = 0.814) and 12 months (p = 0.845). CONCLUSION: Compared with JF, ALT free flap for PESCC patients after radiotherapy failure showed similar results in postoperative outcomes. ALT free flap may serve as a safe and feasible alternative for PESCC patients after radiotherapy failure.

BACKGROUND: Purple corn (Zea mays L.) is one of the main economic crops in China and has been used in the treatment of cystitis, urinary infections and obesity. However, purple corncobs, the by-product remaining after processing and having an intense purple-black color, are normally disposed of as waste or used as animal feed. Therefore, to further expand the medicinal value of purple corncob, its content was analyzed and, after purification, the effect and mechanism of purified purple corncob anthocyanins (PPCCA) on CCl4 -induced chronic liver injury in mice were investigated. RESULTS: It was observed that the total anthocyanin content (TAC) from PPCCA (317.51 ± 9.30 mg cyanidin 3-O-glucoside (C-3-G) g-1 dry weight) was significantly higher than that from the purified purple corn seed anthocyanin (266.73 ± 3.67 mg C-3-G g-1 dry weight), of which C-3-G accounted for 90.6% and 90.4% of the TAC, respectively. Furthermore, compared with the CCl4 group, PPCCA treatment significantly reduced liver index, serum total bilirubin, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and liver malondialdehyde levels, but increased liver superoxide dismutase activity. The pathological changes were also improved, such as more regular arrangement of hepatocytes, less swelling, and fewer vacuoles and apoptotic cells. Additionally, mechanistic studies showed that PPCCA downregulated the expression of Caspase-3, Bax and cytochrome P450 2E1 proteins in the liver and upregulated the expression of Bcl-2. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrated that PPCCA could ameliorate CCl4 -induced chronic liver injury by regulating oxidative stress and hepatocyte apoptosis pathways. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

Polysaccharides have many functions in aquatic animals and are widely used as immunopotentiators. However, despite the emergence of serious diseases, few studies have explored the effects of Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharide (CPP) on crustaceans. We studied the effects of CPP on the growth performance, nonspecific immunity, antioxidant activity and disease resistance of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Healthy crayfish (5.80 ± 0.1 g) were fed diets supplemented with 0% (control), 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.15%, 0.20%, and 0.30% CPP for 8 weeks. At the end of the 8-week feeding trial, the optimal final body weight (FBW), weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were observed in the crayfish fed the diets with 0.15% and 0.20% CPP, followed by those fed the diet with 0.30% CPP and then those fed the diet with 0.10% CPP, whereas the values of these parameters were obtained with the control crayfish (P < 0.05). The crayfish fed the diets with 0.15% and 0.20% CPP exhibited a significantly higher total hemocyte count (THC) and significantly increased phenoloxidase (PO), lysozyme (LZM), hemocyte (Hc), acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) compared with those belonging to the other groups (P < 0.05). The crayfish fed the diets with 0.15% and 0.2% CPP exhibited significantly higher total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, a significantly increased total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and a significantly lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content compared with the other groups (P < 0.05), which indicated that antioxidant capacity was significantly induced by the CPP-supplemented diets. Significantly upregulated expression of immune-related genes (anti-lipopolysaccharide factors (alf), peroxiredoxin (prx5), cathepsin B (ctsb), mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (mtMnsod), cyclophilin A (cypa), glutathione peroxidase (gpx), Toll-like receptor 3 (tlr3), and heat shock protein 70 (hsp70)) was detected in the crayfish fed the diets supplemented with 0.15% and 0.20% CPP diet compared with the levels observed in the control crayfish. These results showed that dietary CPP supplementation greatly improved the growth, immunity and antioxidant capacities of crayfish, and according to the observed results, 0.15%-0.2% is the recommended optimal level of CPP dietary supplementation for crayfish.

microRNAs have been recognized to regulate a wide range of biology of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Although miR-505 has been reported to play as a suppressor in several human tumors, the physiological function of miR-505 in RCC still remain unknown. Therefore, the role of miR-505 and relevant regulatory mechanisms were investigated in RCC in this study. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was conducted to detect the expression of miR-505 and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) in both RCC tissues and cell lines. Immunohistochemical staining was used to assess the correlation between HMGB1 expression and PCNA expression in RCC tissues. Subsequently, the effects of miR-505 on proliferation were determined in vitro using cell counting kit-8 proliferation assays and 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine incorporation. The molecular mechanism underlying the relevance between miR-505 and HMGB1 was confirmed by luciferase assay. Xenograft tumor formation was used to reflect the proliferative capacity of miR-505 in vivo experiments. Overall, a relatively lower miR-505 and higher HMGB1 expression in RCC specimens and cell lines were found. HMGB1 was verified as a direct target of miR-505 by luciferase assay. In vitro, overexpression of miR-505 negatively regulates HMGB1 to suppress the proliferation in Caki-1; meanwhile, knock-down of miR-505 negatively regulates HMGB1 to promote the proliferation in 769P. In addition, in vivo overexpression of miR-505 could inhibit tumor cell proliferation in RCC by xenograft tumor formation. Therefore, miR-505, as a tumor suppressor, negatively regulated HMGB1 to suppress the proliferation in RCC, and might serve as a novel therapeutic target for RCC clinical treatment.

ABSTRACT

Organometallic compounds constitute a very large group of substances that contain at least one metal-to-carbon bond in which the carbon is part of an organic group. They have played a major role in the development of the science of chemistry. These compounds are used to a large extent as catalysts (substances that increase the rate of reactions without themselves being consumed) and as intermediates in the laboratory and in industry. Recently, novel quantum phenomena such as topological insulators and superconductors were also suggested in these materials. However, there has been no report on the experimental exploration of the topological state. Evidence for superconductivity from the zero-resistivity state in any organometallic compound has not been achieved yet, though much effort has been made. Here we report the experimental realization of superconductivity with a critical temperature of 3.6 K in a potassium-doped organometallic compound, i.e. tri-o-tolylbismuthine, with evidence of both the Meissner effect and the zero-resistivity state through dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. The obtained superconducting parameters classify this compound as a type-II superconductor. The benzene ring is identified to be the essential superconducting unit in such a phenyl organometallic compound. The superconducting phase and its composition are determined by combined studies of X-ray diffraction and theoretical calculations as well as Raman spectroscopy measurements. These findings enrich the applications of organometallic compounds in superconductivity and add a new electron-acceptor family of organic superconductors. This work also points to a large pool for finding superconductors from organometallic compounds.

ABSTRACT

To clarify the charge transfer effect on Raman spectra of aromatic hydrocarbons, we investigate the Raman shifts of phenanthrene, p-terphenyl, and anthracene and their negatively charged counterparts by using density functional theory. For the three molecules, upon charge increasing, the computed Raman peaks generally shift down with the exception of a few shifting up. The characteristic Raman modes in the 0-1000 cm-1 region persist up, while some high-frequency ones change dramatically with three charges transferred. The calculated Raman shifts for one- and two-electron transfer are in agreement with the measured Raman spectra, and in accordance to the stoichiometric ratios 1:1 and 2:1 of the metal atom and aromatic hydrocarbon molecule in recent experimental and theoretical studies. Our theoretical results provide the fundamental information to elucidate the Raman shifts and the stoichiometric ratios for alkali-metal-doped aromatic hydrocarbons.

BACKGROUND High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and plasma radiofrequency ablation (PRA) have been used to treat recurrent allergic rhinitis (AR); however, there is a lack of literature comparing the efficacy of these 2 methods. We assessed and compared the therapeutic effects of HIFU and PRA on recurrent AR. MATERIAL AND METHODS We enrolled 66 patients with recurrent AR at West China Hospital of Sichuan University. Visual analogue score (VAS), pain score, rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ), and nasal endoscopy were performed to evaluate the therapeutic effect. RESULTS Nasal endoscopy showed that HIFU and PAR reduced the volume of the inferior turbinate, whereas HIFU reduced the amount of nasal secretions in patients. VAS scores showed that HIFU and PRA nasal congestion symptoms were significantly reduced (P<0.05). The preoperative VAS scores for nasal fluid and sneezing were significantly lower in patients receiving HIFU (P<0.05) than in those receiving PRA (P>0.05). HIFU-treated patients had significantly lower postoperative pain scores than those in the PRA group (P<0.05). RQLQ showed activity, sleep, and non-nasal or ocular symptoms, and both HIFU and PRA patients had significantly lower scores (P<0.05). Nasal symptom scores, actual problems, and mood in the HIFU group were significantly worse than those in the PRA group (P<0.05). However, neither treatment had a significant effect on ocular symptoms (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Compared with PRA, HIFU can significantly reduce the nasal symptoms of AR patients, improve the quality of life, and can be used as an adjuvant therapy with better therapeutic effect.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Internal carotid artery (ICA) pseudoaneurysms are associated with high mortality if lack of proper management. Patients with ICA pseudoaneurysms in the sphenoid sinus often visit a hospital's ear, nose and throat (ENT) department due to nasal bleeding. In such cases, simple examination and therapy will lead to misdiagnosis. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to investigate the clinical characteristics, diagnostic methods and treatment of ICA pseudoaneurysms in the sphenoid sinus. METHODS: Various data, including clinical features, imaging examination results, and treatment and prognosis information, were collected and analyzed for 8 patients who visited the Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery of West China Hospital from March 2008 to January 2017. RESULTS: The patients included 6 males and 2 females (ages 16 to 56 years). Repeated epistaxis was a common symptom in six of the eight patients (6/8), whereas monocular blindness and binocular blindness were observed in the other two patients. Head trauma was found to play a role in the induction of ICA pseudoaneurysms, given that five patients (5/8) exhibited a specific history of head injury. CT examination tended to result in misdiagnosis, whereas MRI and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) were helpful for obtaining a definite diagnosis with all diagnoses were confirmed via DSA. Coated stent intervention was performed in five patients, while carotid artery ligation was performed in two patients in emergency situations: one of whom exhibited paraplegia, but recovery was ultimately observed after rehabilitation. Moreover, failure of coated stent intervention in one patient was resolved via additional unilateral common carotid artery ligation. Furthermore, one patient with vision loss experienced vision restoration. One patient discontinued treatment for personal reasons and was lost to follow-up. No recurrence was observed in the other 7 patients. CONCLUSION: ICA pseudoaneurysms in the sphenoid sinus are uncommon. To accurately identify ICA pseudoaneurysms, collaboration between otolaryngologists and imaging specialists is essential. On the other hand, both surgical and interventional treatments can achieve good results; therefore, otolaryngologists should enhance their cooperation with neurosurgery and intervention departments. Accurate diagnosis and rapid treatment are keys to managing ICA pseudoaneurysms.

BACKGROUND: The discomfort and complications have always been problems for nasal packing materials. This study provided a new nasal packing material called high expansion degradable cotton (HEDC). METHODS: Nasal endoscopic surgery was used to establish a dog model of nasal bleeding, and wound surfaces were filled with Merocel, Nasopore and HEDC, respectively. Intraoperative and postoperative bleeding of 24 h was calculated. We evaluate the absorbability score, adhesion score, infection sore and nasal mucosal epithelium in postoperative 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. HE staining and electron microscopy were used to evaluate the recovery of nasal mucosa. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in nasal bleeding between HEDC, Merocel and Nasopore. Nasal endoscopic examination revealed HEDC absorbability of score, adhesion score, infection score were significantly lower than Merocel and Nasopore. The epithelialization time of HEDC was significantly shorter than that of Merocel and Nasopore. HE staining showed that HEDC and Nasopore could significantly reduce scar hyperplasia on the wound surface. The results of electron microscopy suggested that HEDC could protect the edge cilia of the wound. CONCLUSION: HEDC could be used as new choice for hemostasis after nasal endoscopic surgery, which could reduce nasal epithelialization time, and protect wound edge cilia.

ABSTRACT

We develop a two-step synthesis method-ultrasound treatment and low temperature annealing to explore superconductivity in potassium-doped triphenylbismuth, which is composed of one bismuth atom and three phenyl rings. The combination of dc and ac magnetic measurements reveals that one hundred percent of synthesized samples exhibit superconductivity at 3.5 K and/or 7.2 K at ambient pressure. The magnetization hysteresis loops provide a strong piece of evidence of type-II superconductors. It is found that the doped materials crystallize into the triclinic P1 structure, with a mole ratio of 4:1 between potassium and triphenylbismuth. Both the calculated electronic structure and measured Raman spectra indicate that superconductivity is realized by transferring electrons from the K-4s to C-2p orbital. Our study opens an encouraging window for the search of organic superconductors in organometallic molecules.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Acute rejection (AR) is a major complication post renal transplantation, with no widely-accepted non-invasive biomarker. This study aimed to explore the expression profiles of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the peripheral blood (PB) of renal transplant recipients and their potential diagnostic values. METHODS: The genome-wide lncRNA expression profiles were analyzed in 150 PB samples from pediatric and adult renal transplant (PRTx and ARTx) cohorts. The diagnostic performance of differentially expressed lncRNA was determined using receiver operator characteristic curve, with area under the curve (AUC) and 95% confidential interval (CI). Finally, a risk score was constructed with logistical regression model. RESULTS: A total of 162 lncRNAs were found differentially expressed in PRTx cohort, while 163 in ARTx cohort. Among these identified lncRNAs, 23 deregulated accordingly in both cohorts, and could distinguish AR recipients from those without AR. Finally, a risk score with two most significant lncRNAs (AF264622 and AB209021) was generated and exhibited excellent diagnostic performance in both PRTx (AUC:0.829, 95% CI:0.735-0.922) and ARTx cohorts (AUC: 0.889, 95% CI: 0.817-0.960). CONCLUSION: A molecular signature of two lncRNAs in PB could serve as a novel non-invasive biomarker for the diagnosis of AR in both pediatric and adult renal transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: There are three minimally invasive methods for the management of large upper impacted ureteral stones: mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (MPCNL), transurethral ureteroscope lithotripsy (URSL), and retroperitoneal laparoscopic ureterolithotomy (RPLU). This study aimed to compare MPCNL, URSL, and RPLU, and to evaluate which one is the best choice for large upper impacted ureteral stones. METHODS: Between January 2012 and December 2015, at the Department of Urology, Huai'an First People's Hospital, 150 consecutively enrolled patients with a large upper impacted ureteral stone (>15 mm) were included. The patients were randomly divided (1:1:1) into the MPCNL, URSL, and RPLU groups. The primary endpoint was success of stone removal measured 1 month postoperatively and the secondary endpoints were intraoperative and postoperative parameters and complications. RESULTS: Fifteen patients needed auxiliary ESWL after URSL, and 3 patients after MPCNL, but none after RPLU. The stone clearance rate was 96% (48/50) in the MPCNL group and 72% (33/46) in the URSL group. In the RPLU group the stones were completely removed and the stone clearance rate was 100% (48/48) (P = 0.021 vs. URSL; P = 0.083 vs. MPCNL). Operation-related complications were similar among the three groups (all P > 0.05). Hospital stay was shorter in the URSL group compared with MPCNL (P = 0.003). Operation time was the shortest with URSL and the longest with MPCNL (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: MPCNL and RPUL are more suitable for upper ureteral impacted stones of >15 mm. URSL could be considered if the patient is not suitable for general anesthesia, or the patient requests transurethral uretroscopic surgery.
