ABSTRACT

Wearable devices play an indispensable role in modern life, and the human body contains multiple wasted energies available for wearable devices. This study proposes a self-sensing and self-powered wearable system (SS-WS) based on scavenging waist motion energy and knee negative energy. The proposed SS-WS consists of a three-degree-of-freedom triboelectric nanogenerator (TDF-TENG) and a negative energy harvester (NEH). The TDF-TENG is driven by waist motion energy and the generated triboelectric signals are processed by deep learning for recognizing the human motion. The triboelectric signals generated by TDF-TENG can accurately recognize the motion state after processing based on Gate Recurrent Unit deep learning model. With double frequency up-conversion, the NEH recovers knee negative energy generation for powering wearable devices. A model wearing the single energy harvester can generate the power of 27.01 mW when the movement speed is 8 km h-1 , and the power density of NEH reaches 0.3 W kg-1 at an external excitation condition of 3 Hz. Experiments and analysis prove that the proposed SS-WS can realize self-sensing and effectively power wearable devices.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a highly malignant neoplasm and characterized by desmoplastic matrix. The heterogeneity and crosstalk of tumor microenvironment remain incompletely understood. METHODS: To address this gap, we performed Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) to identify and construct a cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) infiltration biomarker. We also depicted the intercellular communication network and important receptor-ligand complexes using the single-cell transcriptomics analysis of tumor and Adjacent normal tissue. RESULTS: Through the intersection of TCGA DEGs and WGCNA module genes, 784 differential genes related to CAFs infiltration were obtained. After a series of regression analyses, the CAFs score was generated by integrating the expressions of EVA1A, APBA2, LRRTM4, GOLGA8M, BPIFB2, and their corresponding coefficients. In the TCGA-CHOL, GSE89748, and 107,943 cohorts, the high CAFs score group showed unfavorable survival prognosis (p < 0.001, p = 0.0074, p = 0.028, respectively). Additionally, a series of drugs have been predicted to be more sensitive to the high-risk group (p < 0.05). Subsequent to dimension reduction and clustering, thirteen clusters were identified to construct the single-cell atlas. Cell-cell interaction analysis unveiled significant enhancement of signal transduction in tumor tissues, particularly from fibroblasts to malignant cells via diverse pathways. Moreover, SCENIC analysis indicated that HOXA5, WT1, and LHX2 are fibroblast specific motifs. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals the key role of fibroblasts - oncocytes interaction in the remodeling of the immunosuppressive microenvironment in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Subsequently, it may trigger cascade activation of downstream signaling pathways such as PI3K-AKT and Notch in tumor, thus initiating tumorigenesis. Targeted drugs aimed at disrupting fibroblasts-tumor cell interaction, along with associated enrichment pathways, show potential in mitigating the immunosuppressive microenvironment that facilitates tumor progression.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis has been indicated to correlate with dismal survival outcomes of a variety of solid tumors. However, the significance and prognostic value of tumor necrosis remain unclear in gallbladder carcinoma. The aim of this research is to explore the relationships between necrosis with long-term survival and tumor-related biological characteristics of patients with gallbladder carcinoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with gallbladder carcinoma who accepted curative-intent resection in West China Hospital of Sichuan University (China) between January 2010 and December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Tumor necrosis was determined by staining the patient's original tissue sections with hematoxylin and eosin. Based on the presence of tumor necrosis, the pathologic features and survival outcomes were compared. RESULTS: This study enrolled 213 patients with gallbladder carcinoma who underwent curative-intent surgery, of whom 89 had tumor necrosis. Comparative analyses indicated that patients with tumor necrosis had more aggressive clinicopathological features, such as larger tumor size (p = 0.002), poorer tumor differentiation (p = 0.029), more frequent vascular invasion (p < 0.001), presence of lymph node metastasis (p = 0.014), and higher tumor status (p = 0.01), and experienced poorer survival. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that tumor necrosis was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (multivariate: HR 1.651, p = 0.026) and disease-free survival (multivariate: HR 1.589, p = 0.040). CONCLUSIONS: Tumor necrosis can be considered as an independent predictive factor for overall survival and disease-free survival among individuals with gallbladder carcinoma, which was a valuable pathologic parameter.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The optimal timing for surgery following neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy for lung squamous cell carcinoma appears to be a topic of limited data. Many clinical studies lack stringent guidelines regarding this timing. The objective of this study is to explore the effect of the interval between neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy and surgery on survival outcomes in patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: This study conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma who underwent neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy between January 2019 and October 2022 at The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine. Patients were divided into two groups based on the treatment interval: ≤33 days and > 33 days. The primary observational endpoints of the study were Disease-Free Survival (DFS) and Overall Survival (OS). Secondary observational endpoints included Objective response rate (ORR), Major Pathological Response (MPR), and Pathological Complete Remission (pCR). RESULTS: Using the Kaplan-Meier methods, the ≤ 33d group demonstrated a superior DFS curve compared to the > 33d group (p = 0.0015). The median DFS for the two groups was 952 days and 590 days, respectively. There was no statistical difference in the OS curves between the groups (p = 0.66), and the median OS was not reached for either group. The treatment interval did not influence the pathologic response of the tumor or lymph nodes. CONCLUSIONS: The study observed that shorter treatment intervals were associated with improved DFS, without influencing OS, pathologic response, or surgical safety. Patients should avoid having a prolonged treatment interval between neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy and surgery.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a prevalent condition, but long-term effective treatments are scarce. Differentiation of odontoblast-like cells is promising for inducing tertiary dentinogenesis and ensuring sustained therapeutic efficacy against DH. This study examined the effects and mechanism of action of mild heat stress (MHS) on the differentiation of odontoblast-like MDPC-23 cells. METHODS: We used a heating device to accurately control the temperature and duration, mimicking the thermal microenvironment of odontoblast-like cells. Using this device, the effects of MHS on cell viability and differentiation were examined. Cell viability was assessed using the MTT assay. The expression and nucleoplasmic ratio of the yes-associated protein (YAP) were examined by western blotting and immunofluorescence. The gene expression levels of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and dentin matrix protein-1 (DMP1) were measured using qPCR. Dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) expression was evaluated using immunofluorescence and immunoblotting. Verteporfin was used to inhibit YAP activity. RESULTS: Mild heat stress (MHS) enhanced the odontoblast differentiation of MDPC-23 cells while maintaining cell viability. MHS also increased YAP activity, as well as the levels of HSP25 mRNA, HSP70 mRNA, HSP90α mRNA, DMP1 mRNA, and DSPP protein. However, after YAP inhibition, both cell viability and the levels of HSP90α mRNA, DMP1 mRNA, and DSPP protein were reduced. CONCLUSION: YAP plays a crucial role in maintaining cell viability and promoting odontoblast differentiation of MDPC-23 cells under MHS. Consequently, MHS is a potential therapeutic strategy for DH, and boosting YAP activity could be beneficial for maintaining cell viability and promoting odontoblast differentiation.

ABSTRACT

Considering the high recrudescence and the long-lasting unhealed large-sized wound that affect the aesthetics and cause dysfunction after resection of maxillofacial malignant skin tumors, a groundbreaking strategy is urgently needed. Photothermal therapy (PTT), which has become a complementary treatment of tumors, however, is powerless in tissue defect regeneration. Therefore, a novel multifunctional sodium nitroprusside and Fe2+ ions loaded microneedles (SNP-Fe@MNs) platform was fabricated by accomplishing desirable NIR-responsive photothermal effect while burst releasing nitric oxide (NO) after the ultraviolet radiation for the ablation of melanoma. Moreover, the steady releasing of NO in the long term by the platform can exert its angiogenic effects via upregulating multiple related pathways to promote tissue regeneration. Thus, the therapeutic dilemma caused by postoperative maxillofacial skin malignancies could be conquered through promoting tumor cell apoptosis via synergistic PTT-gas therapy and subsequent regeneration process in one step. The bio-application of SNP-Fe@MNs could be further popularized based on its ideal bioactivity and appealing features as a strategy for synergistic therapy of other tumors occurred in skin.

ABSTRACT

Solar-energy-driven photoreduction of CO2 is promising in alleviating environment burden, but suffers from low efficiency and over-reliance on sacrificial agents. Herein, rhenium (Re) is atomically dispersed in In2O3 to fabricate a 2Re-In2O3 photocatalyst. In sacrificial-agent-free photoreduction of CO2 with H2O, 2Re-In2O3 shows a long-term stable efficiency which is enhanced by 3.5 times than that of pure In2O3 and is also higher than those on Au-In2O3, Ag-In2O3, Cu-In2O3, Ir-In2O3, Ru-In2O3, Rh-In2O3 and Pt-In2O3 photocatalysts. Moreover, carbon-based product of the photoreduction overturns from CO on pure In2O3 to CH3OH on 2Re-In2O3. Re promotes charge separation, H2O dissociation and CO2 activation, thus enhancing photoreduction efficiency of CO2 on 2Re-In2O3. During the photoreduction, CO is a key intermediate. CO prefers to desorption rather than hydrogenation on pure In2O3, as CO binds to pure In2O3 very weakly. Re strengthens the interaction of CO with 2Re-In2O3 by 5.0 times, thus limiting CO desorption but enhancing CO hydrogenation to CH3OH. This could be the origin for photoreduction product overturn from CO on pure In2O3 to CH3OH on 2Re-In2O3. The present work opens a new way to boost sacrificial-agent-free photoreduction of CO2.

ABSTRACT

Prior studies demonstrated an equivocal conclusion about the association between the level of retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4)/visfatin and periodontitis patients with obesity. The aim of our study (Prospero ID: CRD42023469058) was to systematically review the available articles linking the biofluid levels of RBP4/visfatin to the comorbidity of periodontitis and obesity. Clinical trials were screened in accordance with specific inclusion criteria from seven databases up to November 2023. A quality assessment was performed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and ROBINS-I tools for observational and interventional trials, respectively. The standard mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) related to the RBP4 level was recorded; the other indicators related to the visfatin level were measured via the mean difference (MD) with the corresponding 95% CI, and Fisher's Z transformation was measured to reveal the association using Review Manager 5.4. The current evidence was based on five observational studies and two interventional studies. All of them were included in the systematic review, and six of them were in the meta-analysis. Statistical analysis indicated that there was no significant difference in the circulating levels of RBP4 in the periodontitis patients with obesity or without, who were labeled as OP or NP, respectively (155 OP-107 NP: SMD = 1.38; 95% CI: -0.18-2.94, p = 0.08), as well as the periodontal healthy patients with a normal weight, who were labelled as NnP (116 OP-79 NnP: SMD = 6.76; 95% CI: -5.34-18.87, p = 0.27). Meanwhile, a significant higher level of serum visfatin was found in the OP patients than that of the NP (86 OP-45 NP: MD = 4.21; 95% CI: 2.65-5.77, p < 0.00001)/NnP (164 OP-88 NnP: MD = 13.02; 95% CI: 7.34-18.70, p < 0.00001) group. In addition, a positive association was observed between the serum RBP4 and body mass index/clinical attachment loss (CAL). And, then, there was a positive association between the serum visfatin and periodontal parameters, including the probing depth, CAL, and plaque index, as well as metabolic parameters, including the total cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Here, the circulating RBP4 level was not independently related to the comorbidity of periodontitis and obesity, while serum visfatin was significantly associated with periodontitis and obesity. Notably, the positive association between circulating RBP4/visfatin and the periodontal parameters/metabolic parameters firmly suggested that the higher severity of the obese or periodontal status was associated with an elevated level of serum visfatin or RBP4 in the OP group. With more rigorous longitudinal research, the exact causations between RBP4/visfatin and the patients affected by obesity and periodontitis could be disentangled. RBP4 and visfatin might be novel, enlightening prospective bio-indexes for the targeted treatment of comorbidities.

ABSTRACT

Soft-hard tissue interfaces in nature present a diversity of hierarchical transitions in composition and structure to address the challenge of stress concentrations that would otherwise arise at their interface. The translation of these into engineered materials holds promise for improved function of biomedical interfaces. Here, soft-hard tissue interfaces found in the body in health and disease, and the application of the diverse, functionally graded, and hierarchical structures that they present to bioinspired engineering materials are reviewed. A range of such bioinspired engineering materials and associated manufacturing technologies that are on the horizon in interfacial tissue engineering, hydrogel bioadhesion at the interfaces, and healthcare and medical devices are described.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Magnifying image-enhanced endoscopy (MIEE) is an advanced endoscopy with image enhancement and magnification used in preoperative examination. However, its impact on the detection rate is unknown. METHODS: We conducted an open-label, randomized, parallel (1:1:1), controlled trial in 6 hospitals in China. Patients were recruited between February 14, 2022 and July 30, 2022. Eligible patients were aged ≥18 years and undergoing gastroscopy in outpatient departments. Participants were randomly assigned to the MIEE-only mode (o-MIEE) group, white-light endoscopy-only mode (o-WLE) group, and MIEE when necessary mode (n-MIEE) group (initial WLE followed by switching to another endoscope with MIEE if necessary). Biopsy sampling of suspicious lesions of the lesser curvature of the gastric antrum was performed. Primary and secondary aims were to compare detection rates and positive predictive value (PPV) of early cancer and precancerous lesions in these 3 modes, respectively. RESULTS: A total of 5100 recruited patients were randomly assigned to the o-MIEE (n = 1700), o-WLE (n = 1700), and n-MIEE (n = 1700) groups. In the o-MIEE, o-WLE, and n-MIEE groups, 29 (1.51%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-2.16), 4 (.21%; 95% CI, .08-.54), and 8 (.43%; 95% CI, .22-.85) early cancers were found, respectively (P < .001). The PPV for early cancer was higher in the o-MIEE group compared with the o-WLE and n-MIEE groups (63.04%, 33.33%, and 38.1%, respectively; P = .062). The same trend was seen for precancerous lesions (36.67%, 10.00%, and 21.74%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The o-MIEE mode resulted in a significant improvement in diagnosing early upper GI cancer and precancerous lesions; thus, it could be used for opportunistic screening. ABSTRACT

Mechanical memory meant the mechanical properties of the matrix could influence the cell fate even after the matrix was changed and has been justified in many kinds of cells. To utilize the phenomenon to improve periodontal tissue engineering, we studied whether mechanical memory existed in human periodontal ligament stem cells and testified if ILK plays a role in this process. The substrate of different stiffness was fabricated by gelatin methacrylate hydrogel. Two groups of hPDLSCs with stiff (St) and soft (So) matrix, respectively, were cultivated. Then, half of the cells exchanged their matrix stiffness in the fourth passage and therefore So, St, So-St, and St-So were formed. Morphology of hPDLSCs and intracellular location of YAP was observed via fluorescence staining, osteogenic differentiation of hPDLSCs was assessed by real-time PCR, ALP staining, and Western blot. Then, all these were reassessed after the ILK gene had been knocked down. The results showed that morphology and YAP location of hPDLSCs were different between matrix changed and unchanged groups; osteogenic genes expression, ALP staining, and Western blot also varied. After the ILK gene had been knocked down, the YAP location and osteogenic activity of hPDLSCs were significantly influenced. Thus, it could be concluded that mechanical memory exists in hPDLSCs; ILK is involved in this process.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have pointed out that a wide resection margin can improve the prognosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, but some researchers disagree and believe that a wide margin may increase complications. The optimal margin length of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is controversial. METHOD: The literature was searched in PubMed, MedLine, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science until December 31, 2021, to evaluate the postoperative outcomes of patients with different margin width after resection. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals were used to determine the effect size. RESULT: A total of 11 articles were included in this meta-analysis, including 3007 patients. The narrow group had significantly lower 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival rates and recurrence-free survival rates than the wide group. Postoperative morbidity and prognostic factors were also evaluated. CONCLUSION: A resection margin width of over 10 mm is recommended in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma patients, especially in patients with negative lymph node and early tumor stage. When the resection margin width cannot be greater than 10 mm, we should ensure that the resection margin width is greater than 5 mm.

ABSTRACT

With the increased concern over environment protection, cellulose acetate (CA) has drawn great interests as an alternative for packaging material due to its biodegradability and abundant resources; whereas, the poor antistatic property and thermal conductivity restrict its application in packaging. In this work, we proposed a simple but effective strategy to produce high performance graphene nanoplatelet (GNP)/CA composite films via the consecutive homogenization and solvent casting processes. Relying on the spontaneous absorption of CA during homogenization, the GNP/CA produced shows an excellent dispersibility in the N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) solution and many fewer structural defects compared with GNPs alone. As a result, the composite films obtained exhibit simultaneously and significantly enhanced antistatic, heat dissipative and mechanical properties compared with CA. Specifically, the GNP/CA composite with the optimal formula has promising overall performances (namely, surface resistivity of 3.33 × 107 Ω/sq, in-plane thermal conductivity of 5.359 W ( m · K ) , out-of-plane thermal conductivity of 0.785 W ( m · K ) , and tensile strength of 37.1 MPa). Featured by its promising overall properties, simple production processes and biodegradability, the as-prepared GNP/CA composite film shows a great potential for application in packaging. BACKGROUND: Mouth breathing (MB) can affect morphological changes in the craniofacial structures, electromyography is widely used for quantitative analysis of muscle function. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate the electromyographic (EMG) activities of the anterior temporalis (TA), masseter muscle (MM), orbicularis oris superior (OOS) and mentalis muscle (MT) in children with different vertical skeletal patterns and breathing modes during rest and various functional mandibular movements. METHODS: BioEMG III was used to measure the variations in EMG activities of TA, MM, OOS, and MT in 185 subjects aged 6-12 years during continuous clenching, rest, maximal intercuspation, lips closed lightly and swallowing. RESULTS: The results of logistic regression analysis showed that the model with vertical skeletal patterns as the dependent variable was ineffective (p = .106), while the model with breathing modes as the dependent variable was effective (p = .000). When considering both vertical skeletal patterns and breathing modes, the following significant differences were found. (1) In the normal-angle group, the EMG ratio in OOS with lips closed lightly of MB was significantly higher than NB (p = .005). (2) In the low-angle group, EMG ratios in TA and MM during the swallowing of MB were significantly lower than NB (p = .020, p = .040, respectively). (3) In the high-angle group, EMG ratios of MB were significantly higher in MT during continuous clenching, rest, lips closed lightly and swallowing (p = .038, p = .036, p = .005, p = .028, respectively), and OOS with lips closed lightly compared to NB (p = .005). CONCLUSION: Breathing modes and vertical skeletal patterns interacted to alter maxillofacial EMG activities, with breathing modes having a greater effect.

ABSTRACT

Eutrophication is a global challenge, which is exemplified by the tremendous efforts but little results in restoring the sixth largest and also one of the most eutrophic freshwater lakes in China, Lake Dianchi. Considering large parametric uncertainties in water quality modeling, the traditionally used deterministic water quality model is expanded to a probabilistic model to explore the Lake Dianchi's potential responses to different levels of pollutant load reductions. The results show that, given the long pollution history and severe pollution state in Lake Dianchi, a minimum pollution load reduction by half (base year 2003) is required to maintain the water quality state as it is now in 40 years. At least a 60% nutrient load reduction is required to generate any likelihood of water quality improvement, however, the system stabilizes quickly after about 10 years, which may explain why tremendous investments have generated little results. 80% of nutrient load reduction for 40 years has 95% probability of meeting the TN target but only a below 50% (45%) probability in meeting the TP target, and even less to meet water quality target for Chla. The feasibility of ever reaching the Chinese drinking water standards for total phosphorous and total nitrogen is questionable.

ABSTRACT

Best management practices (BMPs) have been widely adopted to mitigate diffuse source pollutants, and the simulated processes of its pollutant reduction effectiveness suffer from manifold uncertainties, such as watershed model parameters and climate change. We presented a novel Bayesian modeling framework for BMPs planning, integrating process-based watershed modeling and Bayesian optimization algorithm to reveal the impact of multiple uncertainties. The proposed framework was applied to a BMPs planning case study in the Erhai watershed, the seventh-largest freshwater lake in China. Firstly, priority management areas (PMAs) were identified for BMPs siting using a simulation-optimization approach. Bayesian networks were subsequently embedded to reveal the multiple uncertainty sources in the optimal planning and the reliability level (RL) is introduced to represent the probability to meet the water quality target with BMPs implementation. The results suggest that ENS of discharge and nutrients concentration simulation by LSPC are both greater than 0.5, which displays satisfactory performance. The identified PMAs account for 0.8% of the total watershed areas while contribute to more than 15% of nutrient loadings reduction. The analysis of multiple uncertainty sources reveals that precipitation is the most influential source of uncertainties in BMP effectiveness. The construction of hedgerows plays an important role in the nutrient reduction. With the improvement of the reliability levels, the cost increases sharply, indicating that the implementation of BMPs has a marginal utility. The study addressed the urgent need for effective and efficient BMPs planning by identifying PMAs and addressing multi-source uncertainties.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) on inflammatory-related cytokines/adipocytokines in periodontitis patients with or without obesity. METHODS: We followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses statement and registered the study (CRD42022375331) in the Prospective International Register of Systematic Reviews. We screened randomized-controlled trials and controlled clinical trials from six databases up to December 2022. Quality assessment was performed with RoB-2 and ROBINS-I tools for randomized trials and non-randomized trials, respectively. Meta-analysis was carried out using a random-effect model. RESULTS: We included seventeen references in the systematic analysis, and sixteen in the meta-analysis. Baseline results of pro-inflammatory biomarkers, including serum interleukin (IL)-6, serum and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-a, serum C-reactive protein (CRP)/hs-CRP, and serum and GCF resistin, were higher in obesity subjects than in normal weight subjects. The effect of NSPT with respect to levels of cytokines/adipocytokines, including IL-6, TNF-a, CRP/hs-CRP, resistin, adiponectin, leptin and retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4), were then analyzed in the systematic and meta-analysis. After three months of NSPT, serum (MD = -0.54, CI = -0.62 - -0.46), and GCF (MD = -2.70, CI = -4.77 - -0.63) levels of IL-6, along with the serum RBP4 (MD = -0.39, CI = -0.68-0.10) decreased in periodontitis individuals with obesity. NSPT also improved GCF adiponectin levels after three months (MD = 2.37, CI = 0.29 - 4.45) in periodontitis individuals without obesity. CONCLUSIONS: Obese status altered the baseline levels of cytokines/adipocytokines (serum IL-6, serum and GCF TNF-a, serum CRP/hs-CRP, and serum and GCF resistin). Then NSPT can shift the levels of specific pro-inflammatory mediators and anti-inflammatory mediators in biological fluids, both in obesity and non-obesity individuals. NSPT can reduce serum and GCF IL-6 levels together with serum RBP4 level in individuals with obesity after 3 months, besides, there is no sufficient evidence to prove that obese patients have a statistically significant decrease in the levels of other cytokines compared to patients with normal weight. NSPT can also increase GCF adiponectin level in normal weight individuals after 3 months. Our findings imply the potential ideal follow-up intervals and sensitive biomarkers for clinical bioanalysis in personalized decision-making of effect of NSPT due to patients' BMI value.

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study analyzed breathing patterns and age subgroups effect on cortical bone quality of the mandible in growing subjects, aiming to explore the application value of facial skeletal pattern combined with cortical bone density detection in early screening diagnosis of mouth breathing. METHODS: One hundred twenty-six participants were divided into four groups: mouth breathing group (7-9, 10-12 years old) and nasal breathing group (7-9, 10-12 years old). The mandibular anterior, middle, and posterior cortical bone mineral density (CBMD), cortical bone width (MCW), ANB, and FMA values were measured. Independent T-test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare the measured values. Binary logistic regression was employed to analyze the correlation between measured variables and the children's breathing patterns. ROC analysis was used to determine the ability of the cortical bone density measurements in early screening diagnosis of MB. RESULTS: Mouth breathing had a negative impact on CBMD and MCW of the pre-mandibular (Pog) in subjects aged 7-9 years and also impacted the development of (Pog) and submandibular (Me) sites in subjects aged 10-12 years. Older children in the nasal breathing group have higher CBMD, MCW, and SNB values and lower FMA values. Single-factor and multiple-factor logistic binary regression analysis showed that FMA, MSPogCBMD, MSPogMCW, and ANB are correlated factors for children at risk of mouth breathing. CONCLUSION: Mouth breathing pattern is closely associated with decreased mandibular CBMD and MCW values in children aged 7-12, where the anterior (Pog) and inferior (Me) sites of anterior mandible are more significantly affected. Furthermore, in combination with facial skeletal pattern, it provides a basis for the early warning diagnosis of mouth breathing.

ABSTRACT

It remains a great challenge to develop effective strategies for improving the weak cathodic electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of the luminol-dissolved O2 system. Interface modulation between metal and supports is an attractive strategy to improve oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. Therefore, the design of electrocatalysts via interface modulation would provide new opportunities for the ECL amplification involving reactive oxygen species (ROSs). Herein, we have fabricated an Ag single-atom catalyst with an oxygen-bridged interface (Ag-O-Co) through the electrodeposition of Ag on a CoAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode (Ags/LDH/ITO). Interestingly, it was found that the cathodic ECL intensity of the luminol-dissolved O2 system at the Ags/LDH/ITO electrode was extraordinarily enhanced in comparison with those at bare ITO and other Ag nanoparticle-based electrodes. The enhanced ECL performances of the Ags/LDH/ITO electrode were attributed to the increasing amounts of ROSs by electrocatalytic ORR in the Ag-O-Co interface. The electron redistribution of Ag and Co bimetallic sites could accelerate electron transfer, promote the adsorption of O2, and sufficiently activate O2 through a four-electron reaction pathway. Finally, the luminol cathodic ECL intensity was greatly improved. Our findings can provide inspiration for revealing the interface effects between metal and supports, and open up a new avenue to improve the luminol cathodic ECL.

ABSTRACT

The accumulation of ice may cause serious safety problems in numerous fields. A photothermal superhydrophobic surface is considered to be useful for preventing ice formation because of its environmentally friendly, energy-saving, and excellent anti-icing/de-icing properties. However, it easily fails to work in the absence of sunlight. To improve its anti-icing property without sunlight irradiation, a multifunctional photothermal phase-change superhydrophobic film (MPPSF) consisting of phase-change microcapsules (PCMs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was fabricated using a facile spraying method. Benefitting from the excellent light-thermal conversion effect of CNTs, the surface temperature could increase from -20 to 130.1 °C within 180 s under 808 nm near-infrared laser irradiation of 1 W/cm2, thus realizing high-efficiency de-icing. Meanwhile, a portion of the light-thermal energy was stored in the MPPSF because of the phase change of the PCMs. Without sunlight irradiation, the latent heat of the PCMs was released when the external temperature approached the phase-transition temperature. The synergistic effects of the phase-transition latent heat release and superhydrophobicity allowed the MPPSF to effectively hinder the formation of ice for 10.1 min at -20 °C. Therefore, this MPPSF with outstanding anti-icing and de-icing performances is expected to achieve ice prevention and removal in all-days.
