ABSTRACT

Ferromagnetic (FM) states with high Curie temperatures (Tc) and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are indispensable for the long-sought room-temperature quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effects. Here, we propose a two-dimensional (2D) iron-based monolayer MgFeP that exhibits a notably high FM Tc (about 1525 K) along with exceptional structural stabilities. The unique multiorbital nature in MgFeP, where localized dx2-y2 and dxz/yz orbitals coexist with itinerant dxy and dz2 orbitals, renders the monolayer a Hund's metal and in an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP). This OSMP triggers an FM double exchange mechanism, rationalizing the high Tc in the Hund's metal. This material transitions to a QAH insulator upon consideration of the SOC effect. By leveraging orbital selectivity, the QAH band gap can be enlarged by more than two times (to 137 meV). Our findings showcase Hund's metals as a promising material platform for realizing high-performance quantum topological electronic devices.

ABSTRACT

Mott-Hubbard and Hund electron correlations have been realized thus far in separate classes of materials. Here, we show that a single moiré homobilayer encompasses both kinds of physics in a controllable manner. We develop a microscopic multiband model that we solve by dynamical mean-field theory to nonperturbatively address the local many-body correlations. We demonstrate how tuning with twist angle, dielectric screening, and hole density allows us to switch between Mott-Hubbard and Hund correlated states in a twisted WSe2 bilayer. The underlying mechanism is based on controlling Coulomb-interaction-driven orbital polarization and the energetics of concomitant local singlet and triplet spin configurations. From a comparison to recent experimental transport data, we find signatures of a filling-controlled transition from a triplet charge-transfer insulator to a Hund-Mott metal. Our finding establishes twisted transition-metal dichalcogenides as a tunable platform for exotic phases of quantum matter emerging from large local spin moments.

ABSTRACT

Molecules with inversion of the singlet and triplet excited-state energies are highly promising for the development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). To date, azaphenalenes are the only class of molecules where these inversions have been identified. Here, we screen a curated database of organic crystal structures to identify existing compounds for violations of Hund's rule in the lowest excited states. We identify two further classes with this behavior. The first, a class of zwitterions, has limited relevance to molecular emitters as the singlet-triplet inversions occur in the third excited singlet state. The second class consists of two D2h -symmetry non-alternant hydrocarbons, a fused azulene dimer and a bicalicene, whose lowest excited singlet states violate Hund's rule. Due to the connectivity of the polycyclic structure, they achieve this symmetry through aromatic stabilization. These hydrocarbons show promise as the next generation of building blocks for OLED emitters.

ABSTRACT

This essay describes the successive births of valence bond (VB) theory during 1916-1931. The alternative molecular orbital (MO) theory was born in the late 1920s. The presence of two seemingly different descriptions of molecules by the two theories led to struggles between the main proponents, Linus Pauling and Robert Mulliken, and their supporters. Until the 1950s, VB theory was dominant, and then it was eclipsed by MO theory. The struggles will be discussed, as well as the new dawn of VB theory, and its future.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic drug that is used for uncontrolled bleeding of various origin. This retrospective study investigated the effect of tranexamic acid administration on bleeding tendency in dogs with surgically managed hemoperitoneum. Thirty dogs were treated with (TXA group) and 25 dogs without (CTR group) tranexamic acid prior to surgery. Various parameters (decrease in haematocrit, number of transfusions, shock index and changes in abdominal fluid accumulation) were used for characterization of bleeding tendency and compared between groups. Groups were similar at presentation and prior to surgery. None of the dogs undergoing rotational thromboelastography analysis showed hyperfibrinolysis prior to surgery. Overall transfusion and erythrocyte transfusion requirements as well as bleeding tendency, hospitalisation time and hospital discharge rate were similar between groups. Dogs of the TXA group received significantly more intraoperative plasma transfusions (P=0.013) and showed a higher systolic and mean arterial blood pressure (P=0.002 and 0.050) and lower shock index (P=0.028) with less dogs being in shock (P=0.012) at 24h. In summary, in this study population of dogs with surgically managed spontaneous hemoperitoneum dogs treated with tranexamic acid received more plasma transfusions intraoperatively and showed a lower shock index 24h after presentation. In dogs with surgically treated hemoabdomen tranexamic acid administration prior to surgery does not reduce red blood cell transfusion requirements or postoperative bleeding tendency.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: A 5-year old hunting dog was presented with reduced appetite, weight loss and polyuria/polydipsia. Hematology and clinical chemistry revealed anemia, leukocytosis, increased liver enzymes, hypoalbuminemia and hypercalcemia. The cytological, pathohistological and microbiological examination identified a disseminated infection with the saprophytic mould fungus Paecilomyces variotii in the biopsies of the spleen and a lymph node. Determination of vitamin D metabolites confirmed a calcitriol induced hypercalcemia.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: A 4-year old male Australian Cattle Dog involved in a road traffic accident was presented with severe polytrauma to the Small Animal Clinic, University of Zurich. He was presented in hemorrhagic shock, with an initial lactate of 10.3mmol/l and ongoing bleeding from multiple injury sites. Acute traumatic coagulopathy diagnosed with ROTEM within one hour after accident showed marked hypocoagulation and hyperfibrinolysis. Treatment with a total dose of 40mg/kg of tranexamic acid intravenously resulted in successful elimination of hyperfibrinolysis in the following, serially measured ROTEM tracings.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine reference intervals (RI) for venous blood parameters determined with the RAPIDPoint 500 (RP500) blood gas analyzer using blood gas syringes (BGS) and to determine whether immediate analysis of venous blood collected into lithium heparin (LH) tubes can replace anaerobic blood sampling into BGS. The null hypothesis was that canine venous blood samples collected in BGS and in LH tubes are comparable. Jugular blood was collected from 51 healthy dogs into a BGS and a LH tube. The BGS was immediately analyzed followed by the LH tube. The RI were calculated from BGS results. The BGS and LH tubes results were compared using paired t-test or Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test and Bland-Altman analysis. To assess clinical relevance, the bias between BGS and LH tubes was compared with the allowable total error (TEa). Values derived from LH tubes showed no significant difference for standard bicarbonate (HCO3std), whole blood base excess (BE B), Na, K, Cl, glucose and hemoglobin (tHb). The pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide and oxygen, actual bicarbonate, extracellular base excess, ionized Ca, anion gap and lactate were significantly (p.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to evaluate the molecular and histological effects of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) on vascularisation in clinical cases of open wound treatment in dogs. Open wounds (n=10) were randomly assigned to one of two groups: NPWT treatment (n=5) or foam treatment (polyurethane-foam dressing, n=5). Wounds were matched based on age and underlying cause and analysed with respect to neovascularisation (CD31) and matrix proteinase changes (MMP-9). Histological slides were blinded and analysis was performed using automated histomorphometric software. Values determined at day zero after debridement were used as a reference and wound development at day six was evaluated using linear mixed models. Signalment, pre-treatment time and underlying cause were similar between groups. NPWT resulted in a highly significant increase of vascularisation (p.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA) is one of the most common immune-mediated diseases in dogs with a high mortality rate. In this retrospective study, we examined the effect of mycophenolate- mofetil (MMF) and human intravenous immunoglobulin (hIVIG) in combination with glucocorticoids on canine IMHA patients. Six dogs were treated with prednisolone and MMF (hIVIG-) and in 15 patients hIVIG was added (hIVIG+). There was no significant difference between the groups regarding age, weight, number of blood transfusions or hematocrit on the day of diagnosis. The hIVIG+ group showed a significantly faster recovery of the hematocrit, but this difference was only short-lived. The survival in the first year was similar in both groups and was with 71.5% somewhat higher than in other published studies. The addition of MMF to prednisolone for the treatment of dogs with acute IMHA was well tolerated and seemed to positively affect the course of the disease. Randomized studies are necessary to confirm this observation. Human immunoglobulin had only minimal clinical advantages and no effect on mortality.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: A 12-year old female miniature Poodle was presented because of a 4/4 right fore-limb lameness. The orthopedic examination demonstrated pain at palpation of the right shoulder and an abduction angle of 55 °. MRI examination confirmed injuries consistent with a traumatic medial shoulder instability with no evidence of shoulder dysplasia. A partial rupture of the subscapularis tendon and complete detachment of the cranial gleno- humeral ligament were confirmed with arthroscopy. The joint was successfully stabilized using an arthroscopic assisted prosthetic suture.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: A 7-year-old castrated male Labrador retriever was examined for a 10-day history of weakness and syncope. Physical examination revealed bradycardia and a grade III/VI left apical systolic heart murmur. Electrocardiography demonstrated bradycardia, absence of P waves and an atrio-ventricular nodal escape rhythm. Echocardiography revealed marked biatrial enlargement. Thoracic radiographs showed no evidence of pulmonary edema. Routine plasma biochemistry and electrolytes, basal serum cortisol, total thyroxin concentration, and complete blood count were within normal limits. Serum cardiac troponin I concentration was moderately increased. Serological examinations for antibodies against vector-borne diseases were negative. A pacemaker was implanted one month after the initial presentation due to worsening of the dog's clinical condition despite medical treatment. The dog remained asymptomatic for 18 months but was then re-presented with a gastric dilatation volvulus and subsequently euthanized. Necropsy and histology of the heart yielded a diagnosis of atrial cardiomyopathy.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the present study was to investigate the differences in the characteristics of short- and long-term surviving dogs with protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) and to identify factors that predict its outcome. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 59 client- owned dogs with PLE diagnosed at three different hospitals between January 2009 and November 2013. The dogs were classified as either short-term (= 6 months; STs) or long-term (> 6 months; LTs) survivors. Clinical and clinicopathological variables were investigated between the groups and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed. Nineteen dogs were classified as STs and 40 as LTs. Body weight and blood urea nitrogen concentrations were significantly higher in the STs at diagnosis (P < 0.05). At 1 month after initiation of immunosuppressive therapy (data- driven cut-off, T1), chronic canine enteropathy clinical activity index (CCECAI) scores were higher (P < 0.01) and albumin, serum total protein and total cholesterol concentrations were lower (P < 0.01) in the STs. ROC curve analysis showed that CCECAI > 5 evaluated at T1 was the best predictor of poor outcome. Although the severity of clinical signs and the majority of clinicopathological findings at diagnosis did not influence the outcome, survival time was shorter in the dogs with high CCECAI scores at T1 and which did not respond to therapy.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: In this study, membranes composed of honey (Manuka or Honeydew) and pectin were developed, and the ISO 22196 method was used to evaluate their antibacterial activities against multidrug-resistant bacteria (i.e., Staphylococcus pseudointermedius, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) that cause wound infection in animals. The results demonstrated that both Manuka and Honeydew honey-based membranes had strong antibacterial activities against the strain of methicillin-resistant S. pseudointermedius tested. Specifically, membranes composed of Manuka honey were effective in inhibiting the growth of Gram-negative bacteria within 3 h, whereas those composed of Honeydew honey needed 24 h to neutralise bacterial growth. The antimicrobial activities of both membranes developed in this study suggest that they can be effectively used as wound dressing in veterinary clinical medicine.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Caudal cruciate ligament injury can be a complication following tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) (Slocum und Slocum, 1993) especially if the post-operative Tibial Plateau Angle (TPA) is less than 5 degree. We describe a case of negative TPA associated with partial cranial and caudal ligament rupture treated with a center of rotation of angulation (CORA) based cranial tibial opening wedge osteotomy and tibial tuberosity transposition. A 13 kg, mixed breed dog was presented for right pelvic limb lameness. Radiographically a bilateral patella baja and a malformed tibia tuberosity along with a bilateral TPA of -8 degree were detected. Arthroscopically a partial rupture of the cranial and caudal cruciate ligaments were found. A cranial tibial opening wedge osteotomy of 23 degree and a fibular ostectomy were performed. The osteotomy was fixed with a 8 holes ALPS 9 (KYON, Switzerland) and a 3-holes 2.0mm UniLock plate (Synthes, Switzerland). Then a proximal tibial tuberosity transposition of 10mm was performed and fixed with a pin and tension band construct. The postoperative TPA was 15 degree. The radiographic controls at 6, 10 weeks, 6 months and 1 year after surgery revealed an unchanged position of the implants and progressive healing of the osteotomies. At the 6 and 12 months recheck evaluation the dog had no evidence of lameness or stifle pain and radiographs revealed complete healing of the osteotomy site and no implant failure. The diaphyseal CORA based osteotomy allowed accurate correction of a proximal tibial deformity associated with negative TPA.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: A two year old male Labrador Retriever was treated with delmadinone acetate because of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Four days after the injection the dog showed gastrointestinal signs and a progressive lethargy. In the hospital for small animals of the Justus-Liebig-University of Gießen an ACTH stimulation test was done and a secondary hypoadrenocorticism was diagnosed. The dog was treated with prednisolone in physiological dose for 14 weeks after the injection. The clinical symptoms stopped immediately. A new ACTH stimulation test some weeks later showed a completely normal adrenal function.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: A 14-year-old neutered male crossbreed dog was presented for weakness, cough and weight loss. Cardiac auscultation revealed tachycardia, arrhythmia and a grade V/VI left apical systolic heart murmur. Thoracic radiographs showed a large homogeneous soft tissue opacity in close contact with the cardiac silhouette in the left cranioventral mediastinum. Cardiac evaluation showed atrial fibrillation, degenerative mitral valve disease and a dilated left auricular appendage outside the pericardium consistent with herniation through a partial pericardial defect. Seven months after diagnosis, an atrial septal defect secondary to acquired atrial septal rupture was identified. The dog was euthanized thirteen months after initial presentation because of unresponsive clinical signs of congestive heart failure.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: In this study single-port percutaneous laparoscopic gastropexy in dogs using barbed suture material in combination with ovariectomy is described. A single port preventive gastropexy was performed in 6 female German shepherds in combination with ovariectomy using a laparoscope. Surgery time, intraoperative, postoperative and follow up complications were recorded. In this study median surgery time in clinical cases was 73 minutes (range 66-79). The only difficulty reported was visualization of a proper site for gastropexy on the stomach. No complications and/or episodes of gastric volvulus were detected at a 3-month minimum follow-up. The proposed technique provides an effective and minimally invasive approach to ovariectomy and preventive gastropexy in dogs.
